astbauhan – Hi, Lenora (GRITSandSLUTS) here; I do a 2-week weigh-in session and with MFP I have a goal to meet and usually do pretty good on it. It is a MD ordered/supervised Medical Weight Loss program. I’ve lost 43lbs thus far; and my goal is to lose another 10lbs, or when I get to a ‘normal’ BMI. I started off when weighing 196lbs when I first spoke with the nurse/MD and by the time I actually joined the program I weighed 199lbs roughly 3 weeks later. I had been ‘gaining’ weight over a few years at the rate of 1 – 1.5 (or more) a month. Not until my MD said, ‘at that rate’, you’ve put on 12 – 15lbs or more a year. I came home and cried for the rest of the day. DH agreed that I could get into the program because he ‘knew’ I had struggled to lose the weight. I have Bipolar Disorder and a Seizure Disorder; and, all the medication I take for those and other health issues … all had the side effect of ‘weight gain’. He told me that I’d have to take in a lot less calories than normal figures which are meant for ‘maintaining’ my weight. I’ll be happy to be your ‘weight loss buddy’; but, like I said, I get weighted every 2 weeks. I do not even get on a scale, especially the one we have – because it is so unpredictable. I ‘might’ get on the scale at the grocery store, which is pretty close to my MD’s scale. Sometimes it shows a few ounces differently than what I had weighed at the MD. I guess the water/pee I have in my bladder makes the difference. LOL! It has taken me, since May 12, 2015 to lose that 43lbs; but, I am doing it slow and easy so that it hopefully will stay within ‘normal’ weight. I feel so much better, can walk without stumbling, I’m in a better mood as well. Not long ago, I attempted to pick up a 40lb bag of potting soil and could not do it, which really hit me that I had been carrying that much on my body. The weight loss can be done! It takes tracking your food, and more importantly, tracking everything you eat or drink and staying within that CI/CO (Calories In; Calories Out). I also think it is important to contact or go to your GP to find out how many CI/CO he/she tells you to take in and length of time of some sort of exercise it ill take for you to lose the 35lbs. The first week I was in the program I lost 7lbs; but, since I have been losing at the rate of about 2 – 3lb every other week. I’ve gone up a pound of two since I started (most of that time, it has been because my CI has gone over my goal CI. I do not ‘eat my CO back’ when I am counting my CI (but know if I exercise several times between my weigh-ins give me a little ‘cushion’. I’ve once hit a plateau … (which really hurt) but nurse/MD said that each week, my muscle % weight had gone up; my fat % rate had gone down, my water %weight had gone up. I had ‘lost’ inches, so that was better (muscle weight weighs more than fat weight). How to know I have lost is because they also can tell the distribution of my weight. I started with a BMI of 33; and, now I’m within 1 point to be within the ‘normal’ weight range. My plan is to be on the low side of ‘normal’ range.

Please post something about yourself such as the name you would like to be called, your location (general or specific); marriage status, hobbies, and family. You will find that this group of ladies are ‘fast friends’ and all of them will encourage you on your journey. You have to send and accept a friend to be able to PM (private message) them.

Some of us, to be able to keep up with our answers, with open up a word processing program and put them side-by-side (if your computer will let you). The posting page will take you back to your last post. Sometimes to keep up, you might need to go back and read a few post; because we are posting at the same time. One thing you cannot do, unless you put a WP next to the MFP page is to go back a page, because it will erase what you have typed. So my suggestion, again, is to open up a WP and either go back to it; or you might have to make the MPF smaller or go back-and-forth. You’ll have an hour to ‘edit’ or ‘delete your remarks). To do this run your mouse curser up to the right-hand corner of your page and it will drop down how many minutes you have left to ‘edit’ post; click on the number and it will then let you correct something.

Make sure you ‘highlight’ this thread so you can find it easily by clicking on the empty star in the upper right-hand corner above on the page; after you do that you can get her by clicking on the gray star between the bell and gear and another screen will drop down to choose which month you want to read and post. A lot of us will bold the name of the person you want to answer so it makes it easier to find an ‘answer’ to someone’s post. It you want to show what you are answering to; hit ‘quote’ and it will bring it up; you can delete everything except that paragraph you want to read without repeating the entire post. It has a ‘like’ and an ‘awesome’ button as well. Like on FB, your wall posts cannot be seen by anybody you have not made friends with.

Since this is strictly a ‘woman’s tread’ … we don’t have any men ‘listening in’. HA! HA! HA! So, we can talk about anything, or vent, or post pictures (I’m not good at posting pictures; in fact, I’m AWFUL at doing that. Maybe, someone will tell me ‘how-to-do it’.
About the only things we do NOT discuss … if we can help it; are ‘politics’ and/or ‘religion’. But to make comments about things like the ‘shootings in Paris, Dallas, Baton Rouge, or Nice can be commented on.
I hope I have answered any questions you might have about this group.

Pat – Love your daylilies; I need to work with mine as well as my irises. For the past 2 years, the flowers have bloomed; but, they bloom down close and in the leaves; before that time, they were like these, and bloomed up above the leaves. Do you have any suggestions about what I can do to make the bloom above the leaves? I’ve never dug them up or divided them … I guess that could be one reason.

Kim from N. Carolina – Yes, that’s true – Old Maid is a card game; and, I agree Spinster is a yucky term and it makes me thinks of a nursery rhyme where the woman was spinning on one of those old spinners with a large wheel and bench to straddle.

Karen in Virginia - Our DOS was ‘due to be born’ on July 4, 1976 (the Sequential (sp?) 200 hundred years (signing of Constitution) of the USA; he came early by nearly 3 weeks and he had a large head and shoulders and got a ‘special certificate’ when he was born as all children born that year. He was born on 6/16 – and sometimes his birthday falls on “Father’s Day”. I went all the way through the ‘hot summer’ and DYS was born on 8/31 (which is also the ‘cut off day’ to enter first grade – we chose to hold him back because we wanted him to be one of the oldest children in the class (usually a ‘leader’) than maybe the youngest one (usually a ‘follower’). Looking back – I wish we had held our DOS back because of that. This I realized was very important because one of my HS classmates also had an 8/31 birthday and we always called him ‘the baby of the class’. He ‘hated’ it! But someone had to be the ‘baby’ as someone had to be the ‘oldest’. My DH was 5 when he went into first grade while his Dad was stationed in Texas. Half-way through the school year, they got stationed in Jacksonville, FL and the school system would NOT allow him to continue the first grade; so the put him into Parochial School even though he would not be in first grade; they would make sure that he was not going to have any problems when he did get pulled up into first grade). Our youngest was diagnosed with having ADD and his kindergarten teacher ‘hated’ him because he was constantly moving. The nun/principle did not want to hold him back and I had to threaten to go to the Diocese for it to happen; but, I did NOT want him to have the same teacher. In 4th grade, there were 6 children in his class who had ADD or ADD/ADHD and the teacher met with all 12 parents to ask her ‘if we would be willing to NOT give them their morning dose of medication); 3 of us agreed.

She said for the first 2 or 3 weeks, DYS always wanted to be the 1st to turn in his work; it was always very sloppy. She told him, that ‘if’ he’d slow down and not always try to be the 1st one to hand in his paper; she would give him something to do with his time while others were still working on their work. She’d either give him 5th grade work or let him play with his toys of choice. She was so amazed the day he built a double-winged airplane with all the bars and lights on it. I think I told her that she could keep it, if she wanted to; and she must have because I know I’d still have it – displayed in a prominent spot.

We transferred to Macon half-way through my DYS pregnancy; and, I was really upset because my first pregnancy had been a very rare complication and the birth of our DOS was also considered ‘high risk’ because of it and I stayed in the hospital 7 days; same with DYS. I went to a classmate in medical school of my OB/GYN and there were 6 of them; he saw me every week until I was 5 weeks out of my ‘due date’; then he told me that I needed to go through the rotation of the other 5. The ‘only’ one that I did not get to see was the one who delivered him. He was the husband of a friend of mine, in Woman’s Club together and we sat by them and he asked me when my baby was due and I told him that I had been told that he was due in mid-September – he laughed as he patted my belly and said, “you’re not going to make it.” I laughed and told him that he was the only OB/GYN I had ‘not’ seen. My neighborhood friends came to the hospital 2 hours after he was born; all drunk as skunks with a “Playgirl” magazine with several pages mark showing men with “huge” Johnson’s. My OB/GYN told me I could have a glass of wine with them; I had already sent DYS back to the nursery. It was when they started allowing a ‘nursing mom’ to keep the babies in their rooms so we could ‘nurse them on ‘demand’ rather than a 4-hour schedule, like my DOS had been on. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

grandmallie – My DYS married a woman with a daughter; after he danced with his bride; he danced with his 10-year-old daughter who had escorted her down the aisle so that they would all be ‘joined by marriage’. You’d never know that they were step- daughter and daddy.

Carol/Peach and NYKaren – Our ‘down-sized’ home looks like it could use a ‘purge’; but, the only thing I have ‘purged’ and done the Marie Kondo system has been my closet and dresser drawers. Our combo den/dining room looks like a hunting lodge with a menagerie of stuffed deer, ducks, and other animals. All belong to DH, DOS, and DYS. My only contribution is a huge ‘timber rattler’ with 17 rattles on his tail. It scares most everybody since it is in the dining room on my Mimi’s old Singer sewing machine cabinet. My DYS, who was a ‘minimalist’ would always come in the house and look at the built-ins and just shake his head. He about made my DDnL#2 “freak out” when he de-cluttered her kitchen and threw away all of her butter dishes. He told her that they were going to use one of their ‘gift cards’ to buy a good set of Tupperware and a container for their daughter to take to school for her lunch. She still talks about it a year later. But, she says it is nice to have a lot more cabinet space.

Kim: You are a miracle of insight and generosity where your mom is concerned. How is the garden? I hope it brings you a full measure of peace and joy.

Karen in VA: Happy Birthday!

Glo: Congratulations on your good progress!

Last night I spent some time thinking about brain health and medicine. I found a table of drugs that are linked with Alzheimers. I take 1 on the list of possible connections to Alzheimer's and stopped taking several on the lists of drugs with definite causal connections to the dreaded disease. Acid reflux medicines are there. Luckily, the Bragg Organic Vinegar with "the mother" that was recommended by Mary is working very well to prevent acid reflux for me. Unfortunately, the preventers of motion sickness are on the list of definite contributors to the development of Alzheimers in people over 60. It is recommended that people in the 60+ age group avoid them completely. No dramamine for me on our upcoming trip. :noway: Does anyone know of a non-damaging motion sickness preventative? All I can think of at the moment is ginger and pressure point wristbands sold to boaters.

Lenora - Thanks for the giggle this morning. I just read your tale of the time you peed in your pants. What a brilliant solution of making a production of spilling water on yourself! I am going to keep this in mind should I ever need it.

This Sat. was my first time back working with my trainer in the gym. It felt good to be back. That amazed me since I used to be a person who hated exercise. Now I'm a person who is glad to be allowed to get back to the gym. The trainer took all of my weights down by 50%. Only once did I ask him to raise it back up a little. Those little stitches in my stomach muscles sure made themselves known to me. I must have looked discouraged at one point because he reminded me that I will build my strength back up.

I ended up taking some Tylenol on both Sat and Sun. First time I've needed anything for pain in a month.

I was exhausted when I got home from the studio on Sun. However, I made it through the whole time slot this week so I'm getting better with the glass blowing. Next week I think I will try something just a little bit larger than flowers. I'm building back my strength in the studio as well as in the gym.

Marcelynh – One of the things I will remember most about my parents on their death beds was crawling up beside them and talking to them and touching them on the face. I’d love to have them to talk to – I got my Mother’s skin (and boy am I ever glad) and my Daddy’s tenacity (also very glad about that, too); although sometimes I carry it a little too far. LOL!!! When my Daddy was in ICU – when I walked into the room (he was in a coma) … all the bells and whistles would go off. I think he knew that I had walked into the room; my mother would stand right outside the door. She’d come in after me and tell me I needed to go back to the waiting room.

As soon as she walked in all the bells and whistled would stop and his heart rate and BP would go back to normal. I was a “Daddy’s Baby” and I had been sent to get refreshment and during that time, they made the decision to take him ‘off lif support’. It took me a long time before I could forgive my mother for excluding me in that decision; but, she had him moved back to the small community hospital instead of putting him into a nursing home. He lived another 6 weeks after that. Mother had been taking a nap (at home) and woke up suddenly and went to the hospital … Daddy died the very moment she had woken up. The nurses tried to keep her out of the room while they cleaned him up to be taken to the funeral home. She told them to leave because she wanted some time alone with him. She said he had the most serene look on his face … like he had seen the Gates of Heaven. I think she needed that to be able to ‘let go; and, to know she’d see him at some later time,” She live another 15 years. She was totally ‘independent’ until her last year, when my Dear oldest sister took over paying her bills and then we all made the decision to put her into an Assisted Living Facility, who had just had a room come open. One of the ladies would walk her across the street each Sunday to attend the sermon, until they move a mile or so away.

Good morning ladies, slept 12 hours last night, didn't even realize the kids came in from the movies. They watched Finding Dory, drive in usually have two movies and Tarzan was the second. They read the reviews and thought it was a bit to cult for their kids.

Charlie is not having the scan today. They are concerned about the persistent temperature which goes up to 101. So they are just going to take it out tomorrow. Even a laporascopic gall bladder surgery is done through the belly button and that is where the adhesive of whatever ileostomy bag we use. So I have no idea how they are going to handle that. So they are putting a consult for the ostomy nurse. I have 2 bags here and ready to use. Today is the day to change it but it is still hanging on and since he really isn't eating hardly anything, there isn't any poo in it to make it heavy and pull on the seal. He is really down in the dumps, not even watching Fox News.i don't think he knows of the additional unrest in Baton Rouge. Our family doc is seeing him here so I guess that means his appointment for Thursday. Afternoon will be cancelled but I still need to talk to him about an antidepressant for Charlie.. Maybe I'll just have to let him see a pic of Bea everyday. When I showed him the other day he wasn't impressed but he was feeling lousy.

Kim from N. California - So sorry you have a mom who can be so hurtful. You are amazing and deserve to look and feel your best. I'm sure you'll come up with an outfit that works well for the upcoming occasion. I don't know what thrift stores are like in your area, but I have had really good luck finding nice clothes for a reasonable price in my local thrift stores. Works well for those on a limited budget or for those of us who don't want to waste a lot of money on clothing that will be too large in a few months.

Karen in VA - Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, its good you can't hear this, cuz I can't carry a tune!! BTW in my head that rhymes and I was singing it to you. You have made such an awesome contribution to our wonderful group of ladies. ((hugs))) <3

Mia - it is just so great to see your posts. Every time I see that extra skin in the mirror when I'm changing clothes I think, can I, should I, Mia did it :) You're awesome in my book.

KarenVA- Happy Birthday! I hope you have a fun day Celebrating!

Katla - i'm so glad that the Apple cider vinegar is working well for you. I don't know anything that would help with motion sickness. I am going to read up on the list of Alzheimer medicine to avoid. I did hear once that sleep aids that people use such as Cold-Eeze, and Benadryl is known to increase the risk of getting Alzheimer's.

    Russian kettle bell swing-22X 10 X 30

It is nice to be somewhat back to normal. Yesterday was a rest day but I spent most of it doing a weeks worth of laundry and cleaning that I didn't do while my sister-in-law was here. Today I am going to paint my walk in closet that my DH has constructed for me. We are still doing a little remodeling but have taken a break from the major changes.

    Great day everyone!

Mary - what's the difference in your Kettlebell swings? Is the first one over the head and the Russian waist level. I did over the head swings the other day, oh goodness, now that was a workout. lol

Yesterday I did set-up/crunches, push ups and bridges, bridges were a first for me. My hubby was impressed and then called me his skinny minnie (which I love hearing :)). I'm not but my body hugging work out clothes do show a BIG improvement. I've been meaning to tell you how much flatter my stomach is since I started the weight resistance training and the muscle definition in my arms, thighs and calves is pretty impressive. I went back to see when I started, it was the last week in February. Thanks for the incentive and nudge I needed to get started.

Janetr- Great job on your dedication to working out! You're doing so well. The Russian kettle bell swing that I do is Chest to eye level. It is the recommended swing level. If you go over your head you could injure yourself. And it does not really do much more for muscle development. Watch this video this is the best workout for truly building strong bones and muscles. I would recommend not to watch any of the women that use only one to 3 pound kettle bells.

Janetr- For our age group it is recommended not to do the one arm swing. That is also featured in the video. The kettle bell swing also builds a very strong core. Your abs will certainly tighten up as well as full body.

Kim - That designer batik outfit sounds gorgeous. If you get a chance post a pic of you in it.

Ooo Cheri - That afghan is so pretty.

Mary, thanks much for the information.

OK this is what I watched when I first started kettle bells. I'm using 15# right now but told hubby I need a heavier one now. I wondered what the difference is between the first kettle bell stat you have listed in your stats and the second Russian kettle bell swing.

Mary - thanks, just watched it,

Had a lovely day with my new yoga friend, who took me on the bus for the first time. Nice to make a new friend. I bought Swedish meatballs and sauce and cards and wrapping paper. Always good to do something for the first time. I will now use the bus when DH has the car for cricket. It has expanded my horizons.

    Now relaxing.

Joyce~ ((((hugs)))) for you. Hope everything goes well with Charlie!! Sending healing thoughts!

Last night I told my husband that I wanted to start attending the Deep Water aerobic class from 8-9am at the pool, so he got me up early this morning. He always gets up earlier than me, so he is normally my alarm clock. As it was, the instructor never showed up so we were doing our own thing, until another lifeguard came in and started leading us in different exercises. He played awful music, but heck he is like 20 so what you gonna do? Definitely got my heart rate up though! 60 minutes of water aerobics twice a week is what I am shooting for.
