Brandy barked to wake me up at 2:15 because she wanted to go out. I dressed quickly and took both dogs out together which is a challenge in the dark. At first all Brandy wanted to do was eat grass but finally she did her business and then I had to wait for Sasha to do hers. Now it's way early so I have extra time to eat my breakfast. I can't leave early for the after breakfast walk because Brandy likes to meet her friends and they won't be out until 5:15 so I'll do a few chores before we go.
Mary, thanks for the great detailed explanation of your workouts. I haven't been doing much with my weights because the pain in my legs is getting worse and I hurt something in my left shoulder so overhead and lateral lifts aggravate it. Even so, carrying in the 42 pound bag of kitty litter was easy for me.
It will be cooler today and I have nowhere to go this morning so I can finally go back to the outdoor puttering jobs in the yard that I've missed doing. It promises to be a great day.

Beth just dropped off DD at college, cried most of the way back. Stopped for dinner and I ate like I hadn't had food in a week--weird--even DH said wow haven't seen you this hungry before. I think I needed to fill up--now I've got to watch that emotional feeling. There was no stopping it last nite though
I feel better this morning and I will remind myself that food is it the answer it is fuel

Just popping in to say have a wonderful day! Still here just has been a long week. Scale great though.....hmmmm!
Kylia still smiling in Ohio as is better than crying2 -
Vicki Grand Island Have fun at Ak-Sar-Ben! The best state fair in the nation. Good luck with selling your mom's house - Do you have it listed with Moreland or Colson? I hope you get it sold quickly and for a good price.
KarenE on your way to the spa weekend Have a wonderful birthday weekend.
Sue in WA I rode western and had a 4-H quarter horse project from the age of 7 to 17. I had one horse (Buddy) who was the devil to shoe. Only one guy could 'horse whisper' him and get the job done.
SueBDew Glad you had a cooler day for your golf date. Playing golf in the heat doesn't sound very fun.
Michele NC Thank you, actually if I had thought about it for a minute, I would have asked you, too, about Cathe F. I am mostly interested in the weight lifting programs. I value that feedback, thank you very much! The reason I asked if you live in a retirement community in an earlier post is because you have such an active social life with Newcomers and Halloween party and Mexican Train - there is always something going in your community. Here, there is one slightly snobbish progressive supper club group that doesn't go out of their way to invite anyone they don't want to rub elbows with, LOL!!! Then there is the annual HOA meeting which is usually an excuse for some people to drink a lot. That's about it.
Joyce I don't know how your psoriasis would react to Voltaren gel...there is alcohol in it which evaporates, leaving the film of NSAID-containing gel. It is very useful for people who can't take NSAID pills for whatever reason, but the alcohol might irritate your skin. It does have an off-label use for rosacea, though. It calms down the inflammation in the skin as well as other body parts. Not all insurances cover it, you might have to go through a pre-approval process since you can't take oral NSAIDs, and you do need them. Doctor would have to help. I hope that information helps you. And LOL! about the eggwhites. Scrambled eggwhites are kinda weird-looking.Here a pic of the Scottish Clan quilt we held a binding bee on today. Not my quilt, but a member of my small quilting group.
All the thistles are hand turned applique, something I can't do.
Charleen in Colorado (Loving the cooler nights!)
That is a beautiful quilt. I have some lovely quilts inherited from my mom. THIS one is a winner, how gorgeous!
Carol Lobster. Yum. I have the same question, do you do the lobster in the pressure cooker? Happy anniversary!
Mary Happy Anniversary! You're lovely. Hope you get over your keto flu soon. It's the pits. It's too bad it doesn't work the other way. And thanks for the Cathe F. feedback, there is a thread I saw on MFP that are Cathe followers and I got curious. I am basically a mathemetician at heart, and everyone know mathemeticians are lazy, so I am definitely interested in 'the most bang for your buck'. I go to Jazzercise because I enjoy it (most days), but who knows? Some days it's a pain to go at that particular time, and I have to make my work schedule around Jazzercise. Not always convenient. I have to start over with kettle bells. I didn't stick with it even though I liked it. Going to buy the 25lb weight, as part of the problem was that the weights I have (10 and 15) are way too light. Maybe I will get the 30lb while I am at it so I will be ready to go up.
DamitJanet LOL!!! I had the same vision of Heather balancing on top of her machines swinging the kettle bell. Great minds think alike.
Katla Hope you get to see your cousin. It's precious time.
Kim from N California Wonderful vacation! I did google the areas where you were, and it's gorgeous.
Allie Enjoy the picnic with your girls. I'm kinda glad Tom doesn't want to go.
Barbie I'm in awe. I get cranky when my dogs wake up earlier than 6:30a.m., and sometimes even then, especially if I have been awake in the middle of the night. You are a trooper. How many hours of sleep do you get?
NYKaren and Beth (((Hugs))) Will your children be home for Homecoming?
Everyone else Have a great weekend!
In defense of nutritional shakes: I prefer "real food", but...I always keep Premier Protein shakes on hand...for days at work when I don't have time to eat, when I just can't face food at breakfast time and really need to have something, and for after workouts when I need some protein but don't feel hungry and even a little nauseated. I drink 3-4 a week. They have 2-3g net carbs, 1g sugar, 3g fat, and 30g protein. Doesn't anyone else ever use anything like this? Am I the only one?
For the next few days, we will be spending lots of time with grandkids. My granddaughter is easy, she plays with the dogs, picks cherry tomatoes, helps with chores, likes to cook. My grandson is an introvert who wants to bury his head in the screens. I told him bring his Legos and books and his robot that needs to be programmed so he has something to do besides screen-time, which we limit at Grammy's house. Plus we have county fair and a fun movie planned, so hopefully he will be happy.
Love you all,

Happy Anniversary, Carol. Your dinner sounds special.

August Goals:
- 120 miles
- 10 days over 10,000 steps
- Be up to date with all the organizations I volunteer with
- Be up to date on company books
- Organize personal papers and get pension papers in order
127.5 miles this month already..... 18 days over 10,000 steps.... and finally the scale has moved under 180!!!
- haven't done any paper work at home though!! So will have to step it up on that !!!
It has been a busy week for me. I have everything out of mom's house and while I was sorting and setting up for the garage sale I ran a mini garage sale and sold lots of stuff. Picked choke cherries and apples while I waited for people to come and pick up the things I advertised on Facebook.
Today is Blueberry Festival so I will be filling in at my favorite volunteer position as our little community of 750 blossoms to 3 - 4000 people.....there will be lots of steps again today!!!
Have a great weekend everyone!!

Katla, I do hope you resolve the boat situation. As for instructor pushing Horse ownership, stick to your guns. You have lots of stress and changing especially happening. Horse ownership is not a stress free proposition.
Sue in Washington- my POA loved the farrier, any farrier. I swear that she thought the farrier was there just for her. She would raise each hoof in order and when he was done, raise the next one. It was if she was getting a "man-pedi"'.
All for now. Expensive Internet.

Kim glad you had a great trip!
Charleen gorgeous quilt!

Thanks for all the anniversary wishes! The lobster was delicious. I thawed the tails in the microwave according to online directions and then broiled them in the oven with butter and lemon juice. I hadn't really ever cooked lobster tails before and found out that you cut directly down the solid shell then pull apart to open. The beef loin I had purchased from Sam's had a very spicy coating on it that DH did not care for at all.
Karen VA ~ I might try to Premier protein shakes because for breakfast I need something I can grab.
NY Karen ~ Hugs! My son went to the Atlanta Art Institute and lived at home. He actually didn't move out until he was around 24 and moved in with his at the time girl friend. His future wife skipped her senior yr in high school because her SAT scores were so high and went to GA State University where she had to live in the Tech dorms erected when the Olympics was here. She hated it there and would have done much better staying at home. Ended up living with my son who is 10 yrs older than she. But, it all ended well and they have 2 beautiful children.

I use protein shakes daily. 50% of my caloric intake is supposed to be protein. I use them in betwwen meals to up the protein. I use protein powder in my oatmeal, I make pancakes using only protein powder, an egg, water and baking powder. It's the only way I've found to keep my protein any where near as high as its supposed to be. Carbs are to be only 20% so its a challenge.

Kim ~ Your trip sounds like fun. I never liked tent camping or cooking on a bunsen burner. The last time we went camping was when our son was small and the yellow wasps overran us. I would have liked the hiking and visiting interesting places though. Love being out in the woods especially in the Fall.
Charleen ~ Know your friend will love the finished quilt. The only real quilt I ever had was given to me by my grandmother when I left for college. It kept me going all 4 yrs and I have wondered what I ever did with it. It was no way pretty like yours.
Katla ~ I agree with CJ about buying a horse. You have way to much stress with your DH's health issues, etc.
Carol AGAIN! lol

CJ POA so pretty, when your internet is less expensive will you post a pic? POA = Pony of the Americas, very beautiful horses. They have Appaloosa coloring and are small horses, great for youthful riders. I think the breed originated in Iowa?

I am the same. Premier Protein Shakes are one of the only ones I can tolerate the taste of and we have tried many. Lots of times I know I need to eat and just don't feel like anything so I will make a shake with water and fresh fruit adding in my probiotic and fiber supplement for the day. Filling and nutritionally protein dense.

Karen in VA and DJ - I also envisioned Heather swinging a kettlebell on top of a machine. I just couldn't decide which one it would have been. Surely not the rowing machine ... :noway:
I don't use nutritional shakes, but I do have a stash of protein bars that I dip into whenever I feel a strong need.
Allie - Concerning smells from the washer, I have a front-loaded machine that started to smell even though I left it open between washes. Then I started wiping away the little pool of water that remained in the rubber seal, and since then I haven't had any problems whatsoever. Might be worth a try!
I'm home in Longyearbyen now. There's new snow on the peaks I have managed to keep up with my jogging so far. The transition wasn't easy. The temperatures have been okay (4 degrees C, about 40 degrees F) but it has been really windy. Nonetheless, I forced myself out and did my miles.
Tonight my husband's brother and his current girlfriend are coming to stay for a few days. I've spent the entire day so far baking and cooking a bunch of stuff that can just be pulled out and reheated so we'll be free to go on excursions. (I made a heavy rye bread with ground bitter orange peel. It smells heavenly!) Tomorrow we plan a full-day boat trip to Ny-Ålesund, the world's northernmost place with inhabitants year-round (if you exclude military bases). Far north as I am now, there is still actually another 800 miles of north to go. I'm always amused when friends and neighbors up here describe their summer holidays and begin by saying "We sailed north..."
Busy days ahead for me. I may not be able to post much for a while. But I'm thinking of you!
/Penny, soon to be even closer to the North Pole
PS: We're planning a Skype session this evening to wish my mother happy 92nd birthday!3 -

Do we have dogs, or do they have us? I have a dog and he has me.
CJ & Carol: I appreciate your advice regarding horse ownership and it is right on target. I'll talk to my instructor a bit about DH's health & how I feel about the situation.. I'll ask for her guidance & then I'll start hunting for a lease.
Penny: Our best vacations can be described as "We sailed north...* We went up the coast and turned right at the Straits of Juan De Fuca. Then we visited a whole lot of lovely British Columbia and Washington State ports. We have loads of great memories. Our farthest north point is likely quite a bit south of yours.
Riding lesson today. Yay! I plan to give my teacher an update on DH's health and ask her to help me locate a suitable horse to lease.

Good afternoon!
Those protein shakes - I can't imagine not being hungry, or not wanting to eat breakfast, or feeling nauseous! If only! Even when I was having chemo I was still hungry! I have a big stash of Quest protein bars in my bedroom drawers and always have one in my handbag (purse) for when I'm out and go all hypo if a meal is delayed. I find them quite satisfying. I like the Cinnamon Roll ones best and order them 12 at a time from Amazon.
Kim - I Googled your trip. Gorgeous! I'm definitely coming to the West Coast before long. Watch out!
We are laying low for the holiday. Newspaper reading day today and a Swedish TV cop series tonight. I've made tonight's dinner - Chicken in Black Bean Sauce. Yum.
Next week will be busy with loads of socialising. Tuesday in London, Thursday lunch with yoga friends, Friday possibly lunch here with my Portsmouth friend, and Saturday my nephew's 15th birthday bbq in Southampton. DH is at cricket Wednesday to Saturday, so it's nice that I've some things to do. He hasn't been to one of my family occasions in ages.
Penny - I'm feeling very nostalgic for Svalbard. Watched lots of BBC clips yesterday.
For those newbies who've just joined us, we went on a cruise to The North in June and spent a day with Penny.
Lots of love, Heather UK0 -

That is way too much work for me! I use to do 3-4 hours of cardio type workouts a day before I discovered heavy lifting and I am basically lazy so it was a no brainier for me! She does cardio plus resistance which I didn't do the resistance part but she works waaaay too hard for results that can be attained with weight lifting and Kettlebell with a lot less work and time.

Every other day I swing the Kettlebell for 25 minutes. It really is only 20 seconds per minute of work time. Which really amounts to 8 minutes and 20 seconds total work time. On my Stronglifts days which I alternate every other day, I combine lifting with Kettlebell swings. It takes around an hour and 10 minutes for workout A and an hour for workout B. I do 22sets , a lift and a Kettlebell swing for workout A, work time of 30 seconds X 22 = 11 minutes of actual work. The rest is setting up weights and rest time. Workout B is 30 seconds X 19 = 9 1/2 minutes of actual work. Plus lifting heavy gets my heart rate up and the muscle/strength training has an after burn of calories due to muscle repair.

So, in reality I really only workout at the most 8-11 minutes each day!

Did 1 hr of a 5 mile fat burning DVD by Leslie Sansone. The plan for tomorrow is to do a yoga DVD.
Kim - sounds like you had a lovely vacation. So happy for you
Karen in VA - I'm so sorry about the lack of social activities in your area. That's a real bummer. See, I'm the type of person who constantly needs to be around people. vince has no problem staying home by himself most of the time. So with the Newcomers many times I just go to socials and things that they have by myself. You might want to look to see if there's a Newcomers group in your area. Maybe the Y? I'm trying to recall which part of VA you're in. I didn't know that voltaren has alcohol in it that evaporates! I had to use it a while ago on what I think was an inflamed achilles tendon. I really don't keep protein shakes in the house. I don't know -- it's just me. I have some dried edamame for protein (plus, it makes me want to drink which is a good thing)
Lilly - how wonderful that you sold so much stuff
Carol - that's the way I've always cooked my lobster tails. Sounds like you had a delish dinner.
Here's a pic of the pool cake that I made for today. Boy, was that Fruit Roll Up ever hard to work with. How anyone can eat much of it, I have no idea.

Hello Ladies!
Gloria .... Yes, the son we just dropped off to college is the same one with the migraine problem. As far as I know, he's doing ok ... But I also won't ask!
KarenNY ... It's getting better here for me ... But then, he's texting and calling every day.
CJ ... The phones, email, etc have definitely made a big difference on separation/loneliness issues.... We FaceTime each other! How I wish I could have done that with my mom when I was in school!
Joyce .... I think I would just forgo the scrambled egg whites ...
Karen in VA ... My son is 12 hours from home ... He won't be home until Thanksgiving, although I'm trying to make arrangements for "parent weekend." It's a long trip.
Charleen ... Beautiful quilt.
Well, I'm back on track ... Finally!! Lost 6 pounds last week .... Which just goes to show you how crappy I had been eating!
Since DH is having back surgery right after Labor Day, we are closing the pool this weekend! Way too early, but I don't want him trying to do anything prematurely after surgery ... So today it is!

Karen in VA I start getting ready for bed about 6:30 PM to allow me time to brush my teeth and am usually under the covers reading before 7:30 PM so I can get up around 3:15 AM. It is a routine that works for me and allows me to get over 10,000 steps, a good breakfast, and time for meditation, spiritual reading, and reading MFP by 7:30 AM....I have been using Isagenix shakes since 2009 as part of my weight loss and weight maintenance program...it works for me and the nutrition is awesome.

My go to food when I'm starving is cottage cheese, carrots and HOT mixed pickle. Have to have my chilli fix. Love cottage cheese, but much prefer the ones with high "offness". There is one I love, but can't get it round here. When I go to DS I have to stop myself scoffing the whole container. I have to fight for it with DGD.
Strange how taste buds can be inherited. DGD seems to have the same tastes as my elder son, her uncle. He wasn't keen on fish, but loved processed meat and they love anything salty. She much prefers Marmite to any jams or honey. A lot like me, but I LOVE fish. No one in our family seems to have a sweet tooth, though my DDIL loves chocolate. She keeps a tight rein on it though. Not overweight.
PS - Marmite is a yeast product. It is incredibly salty, dark and delicious on toast. Australians have a similar thing called Vegemite, which is much inferior. A cause of much argument - don't get us started!

Heather, do you ever heat your cinnamon roll quest bar in the toaster oven? I tried it in the microwave (the person who told me it was good heated failed to mention how to heat it). I had to use a fork it softened it it so much, but it was good.
I bought some Premier Protein shakes at the suggestion of someone on here. I believe it was Ketone Karen. I liked the chocolate and tolerated the strawberry, but they don't "hold me." I use them for snacks or post workout. I can't use them for meal replacement. I have also tried the high protein Special K ones in chocolate. They taste pretty good. I have ordered something from Arbonne that is powder you add to existing food like oatmeal or yogurt to up the protein. Sounds disgusting, but a friend was having a party so I said, what the heck? I'll give it a try. I'll let y'all know how that works out for me. I continue to struggle with getting enough protein.
Speaking of which, my friends have got to stop selling stuff! My allowance will only go so far between LuLaRoe, Arbonne, Mary Kay and Advocare! I know I could say no, but it is all stuff I wanted and I wanted to help them out, too. Of course most of what I am buying could be classified as food or clothing, but I might have maxed out my clothing budget already. It is just too tempting when I'm starting to look good in my clothes with the weight loss.1 -

Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful day. Taught aerobics again then went shopping. Our clothing store had a great sale BOG2 free. Got some amazing deals. Had to buy groceries and we needed a lot of things. Came home and took a nap before I could fix lunch.

Home at last (!) after a wonderful trip through a lot of western NY. I may sound biased here but what a beautiful state we have!!
Drove from Lake Ontario over to the finger lakes then down the Hudson River over bear mountain bridge. DH and I drove over 800 miles these past 2.5 days, that is a lot for me.
Happy to be home to pull off lots of tomatoes, starting a load of laundry and oh yeah, we switched out the broken air conditioner so feeling comfortable as I catch up on all the happenings on this forum.
Tomorrow I face the scale and ask for help with the circuit/weight machines at the gym
it's about time I start a little strength training alongside you strong women. Slow and steady, yes??
And Beth my DH is already making plans for parents weekend eventhough I am not going to be able to make it. He is missing her so much already.
A proud of New York, NYKAREN5 -
Drkatie - It's never occurred to me to heat them. I only use them in extremis when I am somewhere I can't get decent food in a hurry, like on a train, or having to wait for people to get their act together with eating. I have to eat at very regular intervals, almost within half an hour of normal, or I start to go weird. I take great care not to get into that state and people who know me know all about it. If they don't know, I tell them pretty quick!
My DH can skip meals, or eat one big meal for the day and that's it. I had to train him to understand how I operate. It took a while, but he gets it now. I literally seize up and can hardly speak and get the knee trembles. Sometimes a mint sweet can get me over it if it's not for too long, but I find the Quest bar is best.
I have never counted my macros and in fact just do most of my logging as Quick Add as I know all the calorie values by heart. I'm really only interested in CICO. My diet is healthy and I get protein every day, chicken, fish, beef, eggs or cheese. I know I eat too much sodium and drink a bit too much alcohol. I eat piles of veggies. No cakes, desserts, biscuits, cookies, pizza, potatoes, rice etc. A bit of plain chocolate on occasion. Very little bread. I do best on a high protein, lower carb diet with lots of green veg and salad. Don't get so hungry that way.
You are doing so well and it shows what success you are having in that you are getting interested in clothes. I remember what a wonderful and strange feeling it was to be able to walk into a store and look good in almost anything! It took a while to get used to it. I still don't spend much money on clothes though, but that's because I'm an "underspender" in general (on things) , but I spend a lot on experiences. I prefer to do things rather than buy things. When I do buy things I go for quality and they last. I love to look stylish!
Time for bed. Lots of love, Heather UK3
