@7lenny7 love the shoe review. I may try to find them. I have the All our Charge too, they feel stiff and bind on push off.
I'm in Brooks ghost 9 now, but I'm leery of committing to a 12mm drop. I have some Mizuno Hitogami 3 coming this week with a 9 drop.
The drop in the cloud trail shoes looks like it'd be 8-10? I like the looks of the uppers. They so look comfy.
@Elise4270 they have a 6mm drop though it felt to me a bit more. I guessed 7-8 when I asked the store owner during our run.
I think it was @_nikkiwolf_ who mentioned that she didn't like the thin laces. The owner mentioned they do that so you can tight the whole shoe quicker, but then you do loose the ability to adjust different areas of the shoe differently. You can either switch to a thicker lace or do some double looping in areas where you want the show a little more snug.

With a prospect of being able to race the 5k on Thanksgiving day, I ran some sort of an interval run on the 18th. On the 19th, I made it to run a faster tempo 5k before picking up my visiting sister at the airport. I could not make a long run yesterday like the past few weeks. I thought I could make up some of the miles today but it rained. With a mini trip planned after the race on Thanksgiving, I may not be able to make the mileage goal this month...

Today's notes – No jogging while the eggs cooked this morning. I didn't get back into the routine after a bit of morning cross-training:
Snow is a great time suck. Being retired is great. It means I don't have to deal with snow *and* be somewhere on time. By the time I was ready to face the day, it was 31° F (-0.5° C) and cloudy, with a reported 22 mph WNW wind and a few snowflakes in the air. Looking out the window, I saw that my street was clear including the tiny shoulders. I know that the broad shoulders on half the roads around the section to my west are cleared more consistently than my street, so I put on road shoes. Dressed for the weather, which shouldn't be too unlike yesterday's run.
I was cold going westbound. The Weather Channel said 22 mph WNW wind, but it was more like pure westerly, and there were gusts considerably stronger. The gusts were such that, on the southbound route I found some exposed areas where snow had drifted all the way across the road to make a slippery slush on the east shoulder. I could see it clearly in the daylight, and I could deal with it, so no big deal. Then I felt overdressed on the westbound segment, and I found more snow on shoulders and into the traffic lane on the final northbound stretch. But smart running plus some good luck with traffic allowing me to run in the traffic lane at key points kept me safe and vertical. Of course, if I'd worn my trail shoes I could have just run through the light snow and slush patches.
The recovering leg still isn't totally right, but it felt just a tiny bit better after the run today than after the run yesterday. I'm not ready to go out and run 10 miles just yet, but I can see a path to getting there.

I like them, the fit is nice. I did have a problem with the heel rubbing, but I think that's solved with a change of socks. My gait is still off too.
I haven't worn the ghost before. These are my first pair. I had run in the cascadias before, then moved to a lighter more minimal shoe. But I'm having an issue with tendonitis, so I figured to try a shoe with more support.
Sorry I can't really compare the line. I don't regret the purchase though!0 -

Treadmill run at the Y today. We've had about 17" of snow since yesterday morning. The roads are clear enough for driving but not for running and the wind is biting. I took Stella out for a short walk this morning and it was painful. Kind of a comedy of errors in getting this run in - I forgot my earbuds so I decided to stop at Target and pick up a new cheap pair. Get to the Y and realize that my ENTIRE water bottle spilled in my gym bag. Somehow my shoes were spared and I was already dressed to run so I just took out what I needed and headed in. And forgot the new headphones. And forgot the water bottle. I didn't want to go back out to the car so I just toughed it out without either. Good grief, my head is clearly not in the game today! In good news though I found my neck gaiter that I was searching for all weekend.
I hope someone stops shaking this snow globe tonight some time. I head out tomorrow for my Thanksgiving holiday week in Iowa. Not exactly the tropics but at least it's not supposed to snow there.
Upcoming races:
11/24 Turkey Trot 5k, Cedar Rapids IA
12/3 St. Nick Shuffle 5k, Syracuse NY
1/22 Chilly Chili 5k, Cazenovia NY

Late getting this out. Finally broke out the long tights this morning. First taper week for RCM.
@kristinegift Last year when I knew I wasn't ready to BQ, it took a lot of air out of me cause I knew all the hard work I did, and it meant another year of more hard work that I wasn't looking forward to. You may not be ready to evaluate next season yet, but when you are ready, some things to consider.
You did say that the course itself was bad. That may be very true. I saw your total elevation gain on strava and it said over 400 ft. That's not exactly flat. Maybe a change in scenery will do it for you. I am already looking at the Kentucky Derby Marathon in April for my just in case. It's in late April and only has a little over 200 feet gain total.
There may be some flatter ones closer to you. Anyway, take some time. You have many months to still BQ for next year. And like you said, it's not going anywhere. So if you decide to wait another year or so, that's up to you.
As others said, you did great. Still a great time for a challenging course. No one can fault you in all the prep you did for this.

Felt pretty icky and exhausted the past few days (as my back to back ironman / Vegas Marathon pacing weekends caught up to me), so without any imminent races on the calendar, I decided to listen to my body and take a few days off from running. I still got in plenty of walking, but didn't pound the pavement or my bike crank. My head cold finally seemed to subside this morning so I headed out today for a run, and stuck around for 12 miles as the weather was just perfect and I wanted to fully explore every street of a nearby neighborhood (i.e. playing running PacMan).
From what I could dig up online, it looks like before I start my next Ironman/Half Ironman plan in late January, I'll want to spend about 2 months at a lower intensity of about 1 hour/day, so I'll be dropping my December biking & running training loads, but will focus more on speedwork, threshold bike rides, and short intense swims.
11/1 - 5 miles
11/3 - 1 mile
11/4 - 2 miles
11/5 - 27 miles (26.2 plus two very long runs through transition)
11/9 - 3 miles
11/13 - 22 miles (10K race + 2 miles of re-positioning + 14 miles of marathon pacing)
11/17 - 5 miles
11/18 - 6 miles
11/21 - 12 miles
Total: 83 miles
Goal: 140 miles
Remaining: 57 miles
2016 Race Schedule:
Disney Marathon - Jan 6 - 3:29:09
Gasparilla 15K - Feb 20 - 1:01:59
Ironman 70.3 Florida - Apr 10 - 5:07:51
Pittsburgh Marathon - May 1 - 3:08:25
Ironman 70.3 Augusta - Sep 25 - 4:43:56
Chicago Marathon - Oct 9 - 3:04:57
Ironman Florida - Nov 5 - 10:21:27 (3:38:20 marathon time)
@kristinegift - It doesn't sound like Philly was fun, and sorry to hear that it didn't go as planned. For me, at longer endurance races, my usual culprits for cramps are either not enough sodium, not enough water (as I've recently been starting races carrying about 5lb of extra fluids on me from a full 3 days of carbo loading which helps), or just pushing harder than my body was trained for (which in my case means starting out at a HR above 165bpm). I've also started carrying base salts on the course to take a hit of (or more gatorade) when I feel the pangs of a cramp coming on as your kidneys can filter out excess sodium, but can't address shorted quantities. My only other recommendation is to do more of your 18-20 mile long run as a 3/1, or 2/1 run, where you do the first 65-75% at a slow easy pace (I'm about 2 min/mile below marathon pace), then finish your last 1/3-1/4 around marathon pace as it trains your body to handle that load/intensity late in a run, and really tests out your on-course nutrition strategy.1 -

There was some soft ice under the snow in places, but it was pretty easy to deal with. Then it melted during the day, as is typical with a blacktop driveway and temperatures near freezing.0 -

Smartly chose to work from home today. I was horrendously sore, and driving my ancient stick shift to work would have been dangerous at best. Just moving it from my overnight parking lot to the street was an effort! This afternoon I decided to go out for a 20-30 minute walk just to loosen up some of the stiffness which was definitely a good choice but ouch it hurt! Every tiny downhill was agony on the quads. But the walk up the stairs to my room when I got home was much easier than it was this morning!
Thanks everyone for the sympathy and support and kind words. I'm using the evening to read through The New Rules of Lifting for Women to plan my winter weight lifting plan (I am going to get strong, I swear!). Yesterday I was swearing off a spring marathon. This morning I was looking up late spring races. Oh indecision! I'd love a marathon break, but on the other hand, I JUST WANT TO RUN A GOOD MARATHON. Baaaaaah.

Had a really great hilly speed run with splits of 8:58, 8:53, 8:43, and then let myself slow down the last mile for 9:14. So, 4 miles in 35:48 (8:57 pace). I have to admit, the first 1.5 miles were pretty much all downhill but then I had to go back up, so still not too shabby. I swear I run faster in the dark.2 -
I wasn't going to run today after yesterday's 10 miler, but it was just too beautiful out to not go. I did start out walking and walked a bit in the middle but honestly just wanted to run so I did... slowly. My ankle was fine but is talking to me a bit now. Mostly my calves are tight despite rolling and rolling. We have agility tonight and I am going to roll out again before class and be extra careful on the slippery wet grass!

Had a busy weekend and just trying to catch up.
@kristinegift - So sorry the marathon didn't turn out like you hoped. I saw it on Strava and wanted to come in here and read your report but didn't have time until tonight. You will get your BQ - because you have the drive to get it done. That just wasn't the one. I have a friend that used that book and it was tough. I couldn't believe how much she was lifting by the end!
We are having some cool weather in Florida. Yay! 45 degrees this morning and I think the same tomorrow morning! I need to get to sleep so I can get up at 4:00 but got so much to do around the house.

@kristinegift Like so many of your MFP Running Fans-Friends I am sorry your marathon didn't go as you had planned. In my eyes you're an inspiration - great role model. You toughed it out to the finish, thanks for sharing with us.

@kristinegift according to @Wendy98 Chicago was Flat and fast - is it a possibility for you or to late for 2018 ??
@7lenny7 Our Local Running Store had those for a while but quit carrying them as they had to many Winter Shoe Failures where the Funky Shock Pads would separate from the foot bed or Tear/crack. I think it was a Temperature Rating Issue - Just to cold up here North of 60 for them. The owner also mentioned that with all the Sand/pebbles that are dropped on the roads would get trapped in the Pads and cause discomfort until you stopped to kick them out. A first world northern climate problem.1 -
14 km loop along the River Bank in the dark. Had to turn on my Headlamp in 2 places where there is not enough ambient light spilling in from the adjacent street lights and once when I saw another runner coming towards me on the wrong side of the trail.
Starting to get Ice Floes in the River so 30-45 days and it will freeze solid - then we can plan for the Winter Tri:
2 km Snow Shoe or 3 km skate, 10 km Cross Country ski, 10 km run. Followed by Tube Water Polo and Hot Tub at the Swimming Pool. When you live in a true 4 season area you have to embrace the season and make the best of it.

@juliet3455 There are a lot of "flat and fast" courses in/near NJ (Via marathon, New Jersey marathon). I only want to go Chicago if I time qualify, which I should have been able to do twice already but have been foiled each time! This spring I'll be training for HMs, but my long runs will be in the 16-18 mile range still, so maybe I'll take another shot at it in late April-late May... we'll see!2

Yes, try again, @kristinegift!
Another beautiful/perfect 45 degrees at 4:30am!
I suppose I should take a rest day tomorrow since my streak starts on Thursday... but I don't know if that will happen. My streak will have several 1 mile days so that is sort of like a rest day anyway. I made plans to visit my daughter in NYC Dec 26-30 and not sure if I will be able to run there because of temps. Although we can do anything for a mile I suppose.

Today's notes: Another run at a faster pace with a HR still right at the top of z2. Ran a 9:20 pace for the 4 miles and was happy with that, but not with the fact that I didn't notice the tailwind on the way out and was running into it on the way back....Oh well.
On another note, I received the first 2 weeks of my potential training program from my Aunt. It cuts my mileage some (not necessarily bad).....Looks pretty good:

@kristinegift _ I just started doing NROLFW for the second time. I am on week 3, doing it twice a week. The last time I did it I got great results and really liked the program, but it became too tough to do with high mileage marathon training and really heavy weights (I was lifting 3 days/wk then). This time my plan is to lighten the load with the weights and use it to keep me strong and injury free while training. I also intend to do less speed work during this training cycle so that should help too. I don't think it should be a problem to do the program while running high mileage, as long as you are conservative with the weight increases.
Also, do you plan to do it at home or a gym? I have been doing it at home and I only have dumbbells. It is tough to make modifications for some of the exercises. I am hoping to get a barbell for Christmas, but even still there are a few that are best done with a cable machine. For that reason, I would probably recommend the gym membership if you are trying to choose. Just my two cents.0 -
Tell us about your Thanksgiving day run/race plans!
For the past two years, my husband and I have done Turkey Trots in two different cities (2014 was local 5 mile race, last year was in Pittsburgh). This year we will be in Greensboro, NC. We decided it would be fun to try out different Turkey Trots every year. Their's is a 5k with a 3k doggie run option. That works out perfectly because he has not been running and was not really feeling up for the 5k. He is going to do the 3k with Stella and my niece and I will do the 5k. I have not yet discussed with her whether she prefers to run together or separately. I am going to leave that up to her. If we end up running solo, I think I will try and see what kind of time I can pull off. It's been 8 months since my last 5k, which was a PR. I don't race very many 5ks, so I have no clue what kind of time I am looking at after all the HM training I did this summer.2 -
11/1 - 5.1 miles. Gorgeous 62° morning to run!
11/2 - Slept in. Stayed up too late cheering the Cubs victory!
11/3 - 5.32 miles. Trek class / treadmill
11/4 - 4.7 miles.
11/5 - 3.5 miles. Easy, short run with my 10 year old son.
11/6 - Rest / crazy busy day.
11/7 - 5 miles.
11/8 - Bodypump class.
11/9 - Slept in. Election "hangover"
11/10 - 5.32 miles. Trek class / treadmill (oddly, exact same distance as last week)
11/11 - 5.04 miles. Windy.
11/12 - 3.12 miles. Girls On the Run 5k with my daughter.
11/13 - Crazy busy day.
11/14 - 4.85 miles.
11/15 - Bodypump class, then Abs/Core Class.
11/16 - 5.15 miles.
11/17 - 5.01 miles. Not what I planned, but By-Laws of Running Challenge say I have to run outside when it is 64° at 5:00 a.m. in November.
11/18 - 4.07 miles.
11/19 - Bodypump class.
11/20 - Rest, church, yard work
11/21 - Unplanned rest day.
11/22 - Bodypump, then 3.1 treadmill miles. Love this type of mixed workout!

@kristinegift I have the NROLFW book and started on some of it, but found it getting too complicated for what I wanted. I am currently doing Stronglifts 5x5 as it is very straightforward and has an easy to use app. My aim is to work on strength over winter and I generally keep the weights cycled back a bit. Also as it has 5 sets of 5 reps of squats I have chosen to modify this to allow my legs to still function (particularly at the start of doing weights!!) – I do 2 or three sets rather than 5.
I do weights twice a week and am still running three times a week
@lporter229 what and when is Thanksgiving?
