Thanks @juliet3455
Hey who made it 30 degrees in Florida0 -
@HonuNui - Just saw your November goal! Love it! I have a greyhound (VJ) that runs with such joy it is amazing! I can't run with him though, he's way fast and is done after about 1k!
@dkabambe - That looks like a fabulous place...I want to run there, too!
@kristinegift - Sorry your race didn't go how you wanted. Great job pushing through!
@7lenny7 - Where's the 3 for 2 sale? Is it a chain? I would like to get some trail shoes as well, but am having a hard time justifying the expense to myself.
@OSUBuckeye906 - FWIW, I have used Ghost 4, 6, 7 and 8. They haven't changed much over that time...I love them!
@katharmonic, @midwesterner85, @kristinegift, @cms721 - It occurs to me, on a relative scale, there are a lot of Iowans in this little group! Represent!
@MNLittleFinn - Might be late, but I got some inexpensive tights (C9) at Target. Both pairs have made it through 2 winters and have been fine down to 15° themselves, or a little lower with an outer pair of pants. I always wear shorts over them, because I have a rule about always having two layers between junk and the world (midwestern modesty)2 -
@karllundy not too late. planning a Target trip to see what the local store has.0

Another 5 miles for me and Fergus this morning...temps in the 60s...a nice morning for running. With the holiday coming up and Mike not having to work on the truck for 4 days, I may be getting some company for my runs over the weekend, so that will be nice. Also, I think I want to try to do a race a month; I am going to start looking for 5 and/or 10K races to do in January and February.
Have a great day everyone!
Upcoming Race:
12/3 Snowball Run 5K, Kingwood TX
OK, so the ticker does eventually update, it just seems to take it a while.

@kristinegift @girlinahat @lporter229 Guess I'll jump in this NROLFW band wagon too!
@lporter229 no turkey trot here.0 -
@karllundy - I'm making my way to Iowa now so I'll be representing in person!
I'll be doing the Cedar Rapids Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving. I'm getting a little worried about the forecast getting colder but regardless, it will be better than in Syracuse!

@karllundy I know, right? I didn't realize there were so many runners in Iowa. With our low population, it looks like most of the state is here in this thread.1
-
I purchased the NROLFW book a few years ago and read it, but never started it because I don't have a gym membership and don't really want one. Maybe I'll need to revisit that decision in the near future.
My family is doing a 5k on Thanksgiving morning. We're now on year #6 of this tradition, which includes me, my husband, my son, my sister, and my mom. My husband typically runs 2-3 times per year (Warrior Dash, Thanksgiving, and the Bloody Mary Run). This year, though, my family has completed eight 5ks together, with at least one more to come this year. Next year, I think we're shooting for one per month, since that's what I typically like for my goal.
Today, we're supposed to get more snow, but just enough to mess up the evening commute. Depending on how long my commute and grocery shopping take tonight, I'm hoping to get a 30 minute run in on the treadmill.

@lporter229 what and when is Thanksgiving?
LOL. Sorry, I guess I should have prefaced that with "Americans". Although you can still tell us what you plan to run on Thursday anyway!0 -
I woke up at 4:45 am for a rare pre-work run. It was raining and 35F so back to bed I went. Truth be told, I went back to bed more because I was damn tired rather than because of the rain. The rain I can deal with. Oh well, my son has soccer practice tonight so I'll run during that hour and hopefully this rain will turn into snow.
@karllundy it is a franchise and it sounds like the BF deals are set but this particular owner, not franchise-wide. The store is Endurance House in Eagan, MN. It doesn't look like they have a store in Iowa. @juliet3455 now has me concerned about the sole pads on the On Running shoes so I may just buy one pair now, and two pair of something else, until I know how well the pads hold up in the cold. I'll definitely be inquiring about their return policy/warranty for a pad failure.
@lporter229 last year my daughter and I ran a 6K turkey trot on Thanksgiving day but she was really grumpy about getting up so early and my wife wasn't crazy about getting dinner ready on her own, so this year we doing a black Friday run instead. This is a free group run at a running store, is later in the day, smaller crowd, and they give out food, beverages, and a free coffee mug (which I don't need, but I'll take). On Thanksgiving I hope to get up early (never a certainty with me) for a longish run on my own.

My mom and wife are running a 5k fun run. On the other hand, I am thinking about going for a <24:00 5k the same race.

Other than the hill between the 2.3 and 2.5 mile marks, it looks like a pretty decent course to go for the fast run.

@lporter229 I didn't get around to signing up for a Turkey Trot so I am going to run on my own. Probably aim for a 5K0

No race for me. I'll sneak in ~5 cold, windy and flat miles near my father-in-law's house while the turkey cooks in the morning.

Been a week or so since posting. Went to my trainer last week after some issues that have kept creeping back up with my hips and just tightness all over in my legs. Some mild Achilles tendonitis has returned as well. He had me do some stretches and exercises that he keeps logs on and my range of motion was way off. I had lost about 4 inches of flexibility on some static stretches. He concluded, as was my suspicion, I was having some overuse issues with my hamstrings and hips. My glutes were not engaging and my quads were weak causes the hamstrings and hips to over compensate. Fortunately it had not gotten to the point of injury, just strains and tighness. We talked about my goals for next year and he came up with an "off season" strength and conditioning program. I told him I wanted to get my half time under 1:50 and my full under 4:00. He wanted me to not run for 2 weeks then start in December with a fairly radical for me strength training program. I'll probably only be running 3-4 times a week with tons of cross training/strength/core work. He also pointed out that my goal to get my racing weight down to 165 failed pretty miserable. With 20 lbs of weight loss i'd most likely kill those goal times without pushing too hard. I'm certainly not over weight, but at 180-185lbs i'm certainly not light on my feet. Plan is to take 2 months of reduced mileage, then start back with half training in February and another full training cycle following. I told him I was super close to my yearly goal of 2k miles and he didn't think getting in 75 miles would be an issue in December. I typically ramp down miles this time of year anyways so I'm not too bummed. Better to get healed up and ready for next year than push though and cause issues that need to be dealt with later.0

For the past two years, my husband and I have done Turkey Trots in two different cities (2014 was local 5 mile race, last year was in Pittsburgh). This year we will be in Greensboro, NC. We decided it would be fun to try out different Turkey Trots every year. Their's is a 5k with a 3k doggie run option. That works out perfectly because he has not been running and was not really feeling up for the 5k. He is going to do the 3k with Stella and my niece and I will do the 5k. I have not yet discussed with her whether she prefers to run together or separately. I am going to leave that up to her. If we end up running solo, I think I will try and see what kind of time I can pull off. It's been 8 months since my last 5k, which was a PR. I don't race very many 5ks, so I have no clue what kind of time I am looking at after all the HM training I did this summer.
As a novice/seasonal/part-time runner.... I will be starting my 4th Holiday Streak.... so I'll start Thanksgiving off with 2 miles. I hope to have a new PR.... aiming for 80 miles.

@kristinegift
Sorry to see your race result, I know how hard it is to put in those types of miles getting ready for a marathon and not get to perform and finish like you had trained. Having dealt with the every step quad / calf alternating crampfest in a marathon before it's a type of brutal pain that makes most quit. The will to finish under those conditions is awesome. Putting in over 70 miles in a week takes the kind of dedication not many have as well. I'm confident you'll be back after some rest & recovery with a new and improved plan.0 -
Everyone is doing awesome!1

Just did the math and, if I get in all of the running I'm planning to this week, and follow the beginnings of the training plan my Aunt made, I'll just barely squeak over my goal with 5 miles to spare. I lose about 5 miles from my original plan by going with my Aunt's planning, but I add in a bunch of strength/core work. Schedule for first 2 weeks is somewhere up above0

That's alright - I'm going to fail at my starting 30 mile goal. Perhaps next month, my training plan and goal needs to change to include street running. Not ideal terrain, but at least I am more likely to do it.0 -

I'm definitely not complaining about cutting some miles. You'll be back running in no time, and you'll be back to kicking my rear in the mileage and pace departments not long after that. You've had a long recovery, you'll soon reap the rewards.0 -
lporter229 wrote: »@kristinegift _ I just started doing NROLFW for the second time. I am on week 3, doing it twice a week. The last time I did it I got great results and really liked the program, but it became too tough to do with high mileage marathon training and really heavy weights (I was lifting 3 days/wk then). This time my plan is to lighten the load with the weights and use it to keep me strong and injury free while training. I also intend to do less speed work during this training cycle so that should help too. I don't think it should be a problem to do the program while running high mileage, as long as you are conservative with the weight increases.
Also, do you plan to do it at home or a gym? I have been doing it at home and I only have dumbbells. It is tough to make modifications for some of the exercises. I am hoping to get a barbell for Christmas, but even still there are a few that are best done with a cable machine. For that reason, I would probably recommend the gym membership if you are trying to choose. Just my two cents.
@lporter229 I am focusing on weights this winter and doing it 3x a week, and I am getting a gym membership next week -- I don't want to have to buy and store weights and equipment myself! I'll drop down to 1 or 2 times a week lifting when I get back to heavier training volume in February. Some of the lifts/workouts in the book seem a bit daunting, but I'm excited to try something new!
And @girlinahat and @Elise4270 and @HeatherMN -- Good to see so many others having tried NRWLFW! Hopefully I'll get some good results from it!
@katharmonic Enjoy the Turkey Trot in CR!! I wish I was coming home this year for Thanksgiving to run it too!

Thank you for the encouragement, but don't kid yourself... it will be a very long time before I can do what you do, if ever.0 -
@lporter229 I couldn't find a convenient race for Thanksgiving Day, but I will be going out for my usual morning run with Fergus before getting the turkey in the oven and the rest of the annual cooking frenzy!1
