The obnoxious looks I get from everyone when I pull out my thighmaster and shake weights and start my work out.

    A different perspective:

I lift (SL 5x5) at my own pace. Sometimes I rest 30 secs - 5 mins between sets. Yes on my phone during rest (usually the SL app or MFP) or stretching, but so flipping what? I have never had anyone ask to work in nor anyone ask me to hurry either. Been doing it over a year in a very busy gym. Everyone has been very nice and courteous.

I am 42 with back (lower), inner ear imbalance, and knee (missing cartilage or ligament..can't remember) issues. I will not hurry up and risk injuring myself because someone may be impatient or think their time/workout is more valuable than mine.

People should be more considerate of others limitations (visible and invisible), before judging them. Maybe it's not about your inconvenience, but their workout.

Edited because sometimes my tongue rules my hands and can come across too sharp.

Same. Depending on many factors - my recovery can be up to 5 minutes per set for Squats. Usually, it's 2 or less, but you tell my legs on a Monday after a fun weekend they need to hurry it up.

"5 minutes between sets is retarded. 2 minutes max max max and you should probably fake an injury with that kind of time."

You've obviously never trained as a competitive powerlifter. Maximum effort to failure with 1 -3 rep maximums requires more than 2 minutes. I won't even get into the "retarded" reference. Really?

How many COMPETITIVE power lifters in the average gym?

How many of the 5 minute "resters" are COMPETITIVE power lifters?

Is that the crowd we are REALLY talking about?

    Sensitive thugs...y'all need hugs.

EDITED: For average Joes and Janes everywhere...who only need 2 minutes max between sets.

People who talk LOUDLY on the phone while on the treadmill next to me

People who don't wipe down their machines (particularly when they obviously sweat all over it...)

But what if they are a COMPETITIVE POWER LIFTER? Does that excuse them???

No. I haven't. Nor do I intend to. I wouldn't sacrifice my speed, agility, or flexibility to be a power lifter. Not my bag. Believe it or not the everyday gym is not built just for competitive power lifters. In fact, I would venture to guess most commercial gyms would go out of business if they relied solely on competitive power builders to keep them in business.

I won't even get into your tone of self importance. Yes. Really.

The dumbells at my gym are never in the right place. Its just the way life is. I'll blame all the COMPETITIVE power lifters from now on...because they are exempt from the rules and stuff.

Absolutely. But don't expect any public accountability. They are exempt. See above.

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday I do the 30-minute circuit at Planet Fitness. What annoys me are the folks who come in and use the machines in the circuit room when there is a full gym out there with the same equipment. It's bad enough when they jump in for one set and leave, but as many mentioned by many, some folks camp out. It's a simple circuit with numbered stations intended to be done in a specific order. If I'm on #5, why must you jump in on #6? Our stations move every minute, you can't wait? Or better yet, there is a giant room out there loaded with the same machines (and many others). I know it's irrational, but grrrrr.

p.m. Yes, I know how some MFPers feel about Planet Fitness, but I enjoy it.

    - not wiping down the bench, machine, dbell, equipment after use. i mean come on, it's not that hard. these are probably the same people that can't walk their trash to the trash can. i.e. i have family members that can't even do that and it kills me lol
    - i am starting my workout - i wipe down the machine/bench etc i'm going to use, go to throw my wipe in the trash and boom someone jumps on and starts using. dude, i did not wipe the damn machine for you! gtfoff!
    - stretching in the middle of traffic areas, do you seriously want someone to trip over you? are you trying to get hurt? are you trying to hurt me??
    - stretching in front of a machine that someone might use, like me, well..okay, then.
    - grunting like a forsaken pig on it's death bed. i understand lifting heavy and trust me i've grunted and heaved and whatever else but holy heck on an apple I have not grunted enough for the whole gym to turn their head. if you do that, do not work out near me, please. please. just don't.
    - chatter. chit-chat, texting, the gym is not a social hour event. get in, get your workout done, and get out. that's what i do. if you're going to sit on a machine and use it as a chair to text your buddy and your lol'ing, i will approach you and ask to use the machine, just because i'm that annoyed. go sit on a chair in the lobby if you want to text and socialize via your phone.
    - i don't care if you superset, i do that and love it. i don't care if you ask to work in with me. just ask. i don't care if you use the dumbbells while i'm on the bench press. i don't care if you ignore me otherwise, because i'm too busy working out.
    - oh and did i mention, wipe the equipment when you finish up. it's common courtesy.
    - and re-rack your weights!
    - yes, i'm friggin anal and I need to start working out at home lol

There's always that one guy who walks around socializing but not really ever working out. The guy who tries to give you tips as if you didn't know what you were doing. Asking someone to let you work in and they flat out say no. Like where is the gym etiquette?! I can go on...

I have noticed a few posts here that people are annoyed when people sit on a machine between sets.

    Is that so bad?

So they do set 3 of 5, do you then expect them to get up and wipe down the machine so someone else can do one set? They they get back on to do set 4 of 5?

Or is this aimed at people who sit for 5 mins between sets?

It's the ones who do only 10 crunches on a bench and then stay while texting on their phone for 5 minutes or longer that annoy me. Sure, they'll do another 10 after they've finished on the phone but can't they allow someone else on in the meantime. I'm talking about an exercise yard with very few pieces of equipment but it's the same concept.

I'm confused though, I always thought that the point of doing sets was to do them close to each other to keep your muscles working... wouldn't a 5 minutes rest kinda defeat the purpose?
