Good morning all! Happy Wednesday!
Re wedding cakes- DD had a "budget" wedding and reception. She had the reception catered and that was the most expensive cost at $2,500 (approx). DD's guest list was pared down as far as she could go and the numbers still exceeded the venue capacity, so she got creative. The price of the bldg she rented covered a time of 2pm-2am; she had two receptions, the first began at 4pm and was for family and close family friends. Dinner and drinks (cash bar due to a problem with alcoholism) were served and traditional dance/music was played. Guests were gone by 8pm and the room set up for reception #2, which started at 9pm and consisted of all of their friends from work/college/childhood etc. DH and I were the only older adults there. We changed into jeans and tennis shoes and relaxed while the music got loud, dancing got crazier, and the games got a little racier. Then all of the kids (wedding party) helped us tear down and clean up at the end of the night and in exchange we gave them the leftover catered food! lol college kids! We were in the neighboring town of Spring Lake and they were holding their Heritage Festival that weekend, so the night ended with fireworks. Where was I going with this....oh yeah...the cake! DD paid about $100 for a small cake for just the wedding party, then bought a sheet cake in the same flavors for the guests. As the caterers took the cake to the back to cut, and serve, it all worked out wonderfully. Then...we (I) made cake pops for the second reception. Those went over really well with that group! Sorry for the rambling story. Memories. Great moment, but I was so glad when it was over! Exhausting!
Yvonne- I got a giggle when I saw that yesterday was Lucky Penny Day! I am going to share my facebook post from yesterday: Sullivan found a penny outside today. I told him he could keep it, so he put it in his pocket to keep it safe. It stayed in his pocket. All day. Until a few minutes ago, when he came up to me with huge tears in his eyes. "My money went down my froat!" I gave him a drink of water to make sure it went all of the way down. Explained where it was, it's journey it will be taking through his body, and how it would come out. He is now in the bathroom, on the toilet, waiting for it to appear. Gotta laugh, as this reminds me of the clip from Grumpy/Grumpier old men; when the granddaughter swallows the quarter and Burgess Meredith's character says, and I am paraphrasing " A quarter?! That's nothing to worry about! If she craps out two dimes and a nickel, then you have a problem!" Needless to say, I don't think Sully felt that lucky. Now all of the other boys are obsessed with his (future) bm.
Sorry ladies, nothing else new here. Working for the long weekend, though I am not sure why, I plan to get a LOT of refurbishing and spring sprucing up done. (Power washing, sanding, and staining outdoor stuff). ttfn xoxoxo KJ5 -

Kelly ~ How ingenious of you and your daughter to plan her wedding reception in such a way.
The penny story is hilarious. Hope it passes.2 -
Kelly thanks for the laugh. At three years old I swallowed my Sunday School offering, a nickel, before leaving home. Sixty-four years later I still have that nickel.

Regarding wedding cakes ...
My grandmother made my wedding cake for my first wedding. It was something she wanted to do. I called my reception for that wedding a "coffee break" ... and my mother called it an "afternoon tea" and insisted that's what it be called on the invitations. She and I and a few friends baked trays and trays of squares and cookies, and that's what we served with coffee and tea. And of course, my grandmother's wedding cake.
I didn't have a wedding cake for my second wedding. I mentioned earlier that our wedding was 6 of us on a dock on a lake near Jasper ... my reception was the 6 of us going out for dinner at a nice restaurant in Jasper. So my "wedding cake" would have been whatever dessert I ordered. I can't remember what it was, but it probably involved chocolate.
I'm a 'keep it simple' person when it comes to stuff like that.5 -

My dad made my three tiered wedding cake for my first wedding. Iced it and everything. He was very artistic and "crafty". 70 guests. Sit down lunch.
I didn't have a cake for my second wedding. We just went to the pub for lunch. There were only 12 of us.
It's very common over here to have the double reception like KJ's daughter. Most people do it like that. Makes for a very long day though as the smaller party stays on for the evening wider reception. Too long for me.
We've just put the self watering pot together. The instruction diagrams did not look anything like the bits in the packet, but we managed. Now all we need is the plants. And compost. It's quite big and the roots have to grow down into the special supplied substrate for it to work, so I think we need a decent sized plant to go into it. The "coaster" arrives tomorrow. It will be heavy so I think we need one. I wanted this kind of pot so I don't have to worry about it when I go on holiday. We will go out and buy a plant tomorrow.
Repotted the fuchsia, which is really growing fast!
I told DH I really wasn't interested in moving any more and he said it didn't matter because he didn't think it was going to happen anyway. Personally I don't think that's the point. Two families have put their house on the market hoping they will be able to buy ours. One of them may sell. I am not going to move now. Tomorrow I am going to pre-empt the situation by ringing our decorator friend about the hall/landing. Plus we need to talk about garden help. Grrrrrrrrrr!

PaulaY: I'm so sorry about the boating accident that took so many young lives. What a tragedy for both families and the community. And then the car accident took life, too. It is so much for your community to grieve.
Sharon: Congratulations on the ride and the campfire. It sounds like good fun. :flowerforyou:
Heather: You are lucky to have a cleaner. We've been looking for one without luck for quite some time. There is a cleaning company that has a telephone advertisement but we haven't managed to get an answer so far. No one is advertising that they want work in the want ads. :ohwell:
Pip: Gorgeous view!
Yoga today!!!! I look forward to stretching out. Memorial Day is coming up soon and I'm planning to take flowers to the cemetery. I have Rhodies in bloom with enough blossoms for all those whose graves I visit. I'm thinking of going tomorrow because I have no desire to be on I-5 any time on Memorial Day Weekend.

Katla - I looked online for local companies. Then rang one. My old cleaner put a leaflet through the door. People sometimes put notices up at the local post office etc.
The main reason I have a cleaner is for the sake of marital harmony. DH is very good about doing his fair share of house chores and he does quite a lot of stuff he considers his jobs. This includes washing up and keeping the surfaces clean. However the main cleaning is a grey area and as a liberated woman  I am only going to do my fair share on principle. DH is willing, but he is never willing at the times I want him to do it and I don't want to turn into a nag. It became a "bone of contention. He was surprised when I suggested a cleaner, as he felt perfectly capable, but it saved a whole lot of grumpiness and grumbling on my part. And kept the marital peace. Today the substitute cleaner cleaned inside the living room windows where the grandchildren had smeared their grubby hands and Bea rubbed her lips on the glass. I was quite sorry to see the marks go!

Dana- You are the incredible shrinking woman!
The kiddos ate the last of the pumpkin muffins this morning! I can't tell you what a relief that was! Those muffins have been speaking to me all week! Whispering very sexy words in my ears. Hard to resist. They are gone now. Sometimes food is like having the devil in your house.4 -
Thank you KJ and Heather. I can do it! I really feel empowered!!
I'm cleaning up the house and giving DH instructions for when I'm gone to Cheyenne. Got my bag packed and all I'm doing the rest of the day is going to get gas in my car, cash a check and get my toes done!

PaulaY such a tragedy. I'm so sorry.
Allie, hope the second lawyer works out. Did you get your retainer back from the first one?
Heather, good luck with the whole house thing.
Lisa, is it ethical for the real estate agent to tell people your bid?
The Breast Health Center called me today. The radiologist did not like my Mammogram and wants to do another plus a possible ultrasound. This is set for June 2. Now we wait. I've gone through this once before, and it was nothing, but it was scary.2 -
NY Karen ... Congrats on reaching goal! Hope you stop with the itching soon! And, yes, we are settling in with college boy. Unfortunately, he is having a hard time finding a job and he needs one desperately. A problem with one of his classes is costing him his scholarships ... he's short 7000.00 for the Fall semester! No way he can earn that much in 12 weeks even if he does find a job .... it's causing me sleepless nights.
Drkatiebug ... I go to a radiology group that reads your mammogram immediately and orders ultrasounds and whatever else is needed before you even get dressed. I like it that way! I've gone through a couple of procedures and know that the waiting is the worst part. Hang in there!
Wedding Cakes ... I was asked by a co-worker to make her daughter's wedding cake. I'm not a baker! But she wanted a cupcake wedding cake ... so I thought ... how hard can making cupcakes be? Silly, silly, girl... it was a huge undertaking. I baked and frosted 350 cupcakes (with some friends' help) a small tier to hold the bride's cake topper. Purchased a special stand to hold it all together. We gifted the cake but I was told it was probably the equivalent of $1350.00. Oh we set it up at the reception as well.... and the light blue frosting that was on the sunny side of the tent ... well, it turned green! My husband purposely ate some of the ones in the sun ... to see if they were spoiled!
Sorry for the photo quality ... photo of computer pic ...

Beth ~ What a beautiful cake. And, must have been a huge undertaking.1

Beth I really like the cupcake tower.
Why doesn't DYS find a way to make up the credits through community college. wouldn't that reinstate the scholarship $$. Sorry he's finding it hard to get a job, toughest thing to get for summer (unless you're a lifeguard)
Weather has finally turned nice, enjoying a cup of coffee before the next work begins.

NYKaren ...do community college credits in NY transfer to another state? In any case, the class in question was one of his music major courses and I've never seen those available in the community college setting. Nor do I think the college would accept it...1
