I am not sure how you all do it when it is so very hot and humid out. It was already near 80 this morning with about 85% humidity and I just couldn't do it... I also got distracted by wedding planning tasks from my daughter but that just became an excuse. Now it is over 90 with a feels like of 96 so this afternoon I will run first on the dreadmill at the gym before doing my strength training.4

if the elevation chart is at all accurate, it's less than 200 feet, that's not bad1 -

So I am going running after work. (Just reminding myself) was it convincing?
I work with about 13 people people, most of them rotate so I haven't worked with everyone in the last week. I have 7 confirmed (myself included) that had this stomach virus. Hahaha! Purell is my best friend.
I'm whiny. Wine-y? I wish it didn't give me a headache or I would be. Surgery side is unhappy today. I'll still get out for some exercise. I will. Even though there is Halo at home. I will.
DH made a comment about my calves. So what they're large right? I'd like to do some squats or leg press to add muscle to my quads, but that's supposed to be off limits. I could do it anyway? Ok... See him in a week, maybe I'll ask first.
How's your calf/thigh size? Mine is about 4 cm smaller than my thigh.0 -

NO kidding! Even though I ran late last night, it was still 86 degrees, and super humid. I didn't bring water with me, and could have killed for a drink of water.
I think that I am going to incorporate the dreadmill myself this August, esp. when I am running low on time. Even if it is only a mile or two, it is better than nothing.

I almost forgot - I got new shoes!!!!
Going to be a couple of weeks before I can get out and use them sadly.

Great news! Congratulations! That's a perfect date for a first....should have nice cool weather during your run.1 -
@KatieJane83 That sounds like a real bad*kitten* training run for sure!
I saw the new roadID bands. Just when I finally ordered myself some, with lots on single-colored bands... I got a neon yellow ankle band, that'll have to be fancy enough for now.
@girlinahat Sorry to hear about your car! I'm glad you weren't hurt in the crash.
@7lenny7 I'm really jealous reading about your weather Too bad you didn't get a good photo of the mink. I never manage to capture wild animals... I saw a marten yesterday while cycling and a fox today while running, but both were gone before I even had the camera app running.
@PastorVincent I think that elevation map grossly exagerates the climb. That's what, a climb from 700ft to 867ft, from 1.6mi to 2.22mi? If you convert it to meters, it turns out it's only about 50m of climbing over 580m. That's not even a 9% slope, for a short part of the race. They just make it look dramatic by chosing the axis ranges as they do.
@amymoreorless Wow, a full marathon? Awesome! Will it be your first?
@Elise4270 Please tell me you are talking about radius, or measured in inches? I just checked, my thigh circumference at the largest is nearly 20cm larger than my calves. I'm down to my goal weight, ran more than a thousand km so far this year (and cycled 1600km more), do body-weight exercises as strength training twice per week, and they are still fat. I know I'll never ever be able to wear skinny jeans. I hate buying any kind of jeans at all because either they I can't pull them up over my thighs or *kitten*, and if I do, they are way too wide at the waist.
... sorry for the rant, but you asked

I'm in.
I'm working on the distance challenge on Strava so why not log here huh? 200km/124(ish) miles. Let's do this!4 -
@_nikkiwolf_ ugh. My calves are 33cm around and thighs 37. but.... I'm trying to convince myself it's fine. Since there nothing I can do about it, naturally.
I'm hoping I just need to build quads.
ETA oh I'm measuring just 10 cm above the top of my knee cap. So that may be part of it.0 -
@Elise4270 It's not your calves that require any convincing it's fine - it's my fat thighs . My calves are 36cm around, but my thighs are 57cm at the widest point. 10cm above the knee cap they are "only" 48cm, but still...
Feel free to show those numbers to your DH the next time he tells you not to do squats
@girlinahat Awesome new shoes! I have a pair of Inov-8 shoes too (Terrafly 227), I like them a lot.1 -
How's your calf/thigh size? Mine is about 4 cm smaller than my thigh.
@Elise4270 My calves at their widest are almost the same circumference as my quad where it "squares" above my knee. I am right with you in the Big Calf Club!1 -
Like seriously, can summer be over already, please?
I took my running things with me today to drive over to the mountains after work. It was 37°C (98°F) when I wanted to leave! At that point some colleagues started talking about cold beer, which sounded more fun than running in that heat, so I joined them for a small glass first and then killed enough time that it started to cool down outside.
In the end, it was _only_ 33°C when I started running. Still too hot for my taste, so I chose the "tamest" of the three options I had to chose from, which is mostly paved road, lots of trees, and only 8% slope on average. Instead of going a predetermined distance, I decided I would just run uphill until all the water in my hydration pack was gone, then turn around and head back down. That happened to be after 7.3km, but in the end I added some little loops on the way back rather than taking the shortest way and ended up with 17km. Not bad for a horribly hot day!
Thanks to my late departure, it was already starting to get dark in the end, and I saw a fox just before getting back to the village. It sat at the road and stared at me until I decided to try and take a photo, or course that's when it jumped up and ran away ^^ Still, even without the photo it was a nice way to end the run.

I work tonight, and then my husband and I are packing to leave town for a few days. A visit with my mother on Saturday, my class reunion, followed by a drive to Iowa. My mother will be travelling with us. We are spending a couple of days with my older sister, but my mother will be there a couple of weeks. We would like to visit the Amana Colonies, but not sure whether to take my mother or not. (She is 89 y.o. and walks without a walker, but she is a very slow walker. She refuses to exercise to improve her stamina.) I am not sure she will be able to do very much walking. Has anyone been there? Is there a lot of walking involved?
There could be a lot of walking @ereck44. I haven't been for years, and probably just drove to one or two places per trip (restaurants/food mostly). But if you want to shop around and see several places you might be in for a fair amount of walking. If there are a few things you want to hit, you could drive from one to the other. Here's an interactive map if it helps:

@Elise4270 and @_nikkiwolf_ - My calves are 37cm and my thighs at the widest part are 48cm. I don't think I have big calves - I wear normal size boots, where my daughter has to buy wide topped boots (she has big calves). I also don't think my thighs are big. I wear a normal size 4 or 6 and they fit fine. I have had a couple of pairs of 'skinny' pants that would ride up around my calf though, when I sat down and would not come down easily.2

58°F right now. Time to go home and RUN!
Sweet shoes, @girlinahat !
@_nikkiwolf_ That mink was a cute little guy but I think he would have chewed my ears off given half a chance.
@WandaVaughn excited news! A first HM is a huge milestone!
Now that I'm getting back into the groove, I couldn't help but think about my next big race, a 50 mile trail race in April. I spend about a half hour tweaking my training plan.
It was supposed to be a 20 week plan but I counted wrong so rather than fix it, it was easier to add another week, hence the 21 week plan. I intentionally design my training plans with weekly total mileage which cycle up and down. I roughly try to get each peak week about 10% higher than the previous peak, and each down week about 20% lower than the previous week. Exceptions must be made around build-up races. I feel this lessens my chance of injury and gives me more flexibility for schedule changes.
Based on my experience with the 50K, I decided that I need more hill work, and that hill work is far more important than speed work for a trail ultra, so I have plenty of hill sessions, and no speedwork (though I do like to run trail strides on flat, easy portions of trail). I may add something back in later.
Mondays & Friday will be core work...if I can muster the discipline.
Tuesdays and Thursdays (after the first month) are hills. This may be running an exceptionally hill trail, hill springs, or hill repeats. It may be on trail or pavement.
Wednesdays will be easy miles, on pavement.
Saturdays and Sundays...the meat of the program! That's were the mileage difference between easy and hard weeks show up. When training for my 50K, I had 6 training runs of 20 miles or more. For the 50M I plan on 8, but I'll also have some big miles on the other weekend day.
In addition to the goal race, I have two build up races (HM and 30K) and two races after which I'd really like to do. Hopefully it works out that I can.

I'm at the lower end of "normal" BMI. If I lose any more weight, it always melts off face, chest and arms, never of the legs, and I end up looking sick or anorexic . So I've decided I'll just have to live with it!
My legs work well for running, cycling and everything else, that's the most important thing. And if I hide them behind long pants, I don't get funny questions about all my trail running cuts and bruises, so win-win, right?

Sorry I think I beat you. My calf is 36cm and my thigh is 60cm measured 10cm above the knee. I did not have the heart to measure the widest point I am considered obese but I am working to correct that.2
