See it is stuff like that why I do not get a trainer. Too complicated and I could never hold a pace within 10 seconds no mater how slow. Just not that talented.
It's not actually that hard... I have my watch set for pace alerts that match with the split time. The point is to basically push to failure, so once I'm not within 10 I'll stop and to do my cooldown.
@lporter229 sorry, didn't notice I skipped that part!0 -

@RunsOnEspresso I think I am going to do. I am working on injury recovery now but by Thanksgiving (day I have a 5k) I think that at least 1 mile every day would be good.2 -

"Not Actually that hard" -- FOR YOU maybe. I could not keep a pace within 10 seconds... for 10 seconds. Heck I can not even clap on beat without someone to watch.

as long as the split time is correct it does't matter........ I'll vary +/- 10-15 seconds at times, but the split time comes out close. it's just being aware of pace, using the watch to help and finding the groove......
.... I can't clap on beat either0 -
Jesus Christ, everyone is setting such high goals!
I have just started running on the first for only a mile and a half and it sucked. I think for me a reasonable goal would be 40 miles otherwise I won't reach it and feel like I have accomplished nothing. If anyone has any tips for beginners, feel free to let me know what helped you get started at the very beginning. I am trying to focus on reducing the time for a set amount of distance and slowly increase the distance as I go.
Good luck to everyone this month with reaching their goals!7 -
I just realized why I ran my "practice race" backwards last month. The November race I have is practically the same loop in reverse, so when I was planning my training runs, I must have been looking at the November map instead of October map.
This makes me v. v. happy because even though the hill is steeper for November, it's a much shorter climb and there is way more downhill than uphill.4 -
Bring on NOVEMBrrrrr
Goal: 50mi
11/03 - 11.1

I felt like that at first too. Doesn't matter. everyone starts somewhere and puts one foot in front of the other. I think my first month's goal was to just finish the couch to 5k program. So no worries.5 -
@kidrauhldrew My tips for beginners are to start slow and don't compare yourself to others. There are a lot of people in this thread with high mileage, but there are plenty here who have lower goals too. I started out running using the C25K app and I found it really helpful. My first month on here my goal was 40 miles and I have been gradually increasing it, but I doubt I will ever have the high mileage of many on here and that is ok. Just do you and welcome to the group.4

Everybody has to be a beginner at some point. This stuff is kinda hard..until it isn't. Then it's like crack. And then you try and keep up with this thread and people are running in a single race what I run in a month. But it's a great group of folks who aren't judgy mcjudgersons.5 -

We all started somewhere. 40 miles is a great monthly goal. My best advice? If you have any questions, ask the folks on here, they are great.2 -

Just checking in as today is my rest day. It's so nice out (finally sunny and not windy/cold) I wish I wasn't at work and could go enjoy the weather. We've had nothing but rain the last few days and the weather network is calling for snow tomorrow1

Welcome to the group, where it's easy to join, just really hard to leave!
As a beginner, my advice would be not to focus on reducing the amount of time for a set distance and just to concentrate on increasing that distance. You are working on developing an aerobic base and the best way to do that is to spend more time running. Pace is irrelevant at this point. In fact, concentrate on running slow enough to be able to run for a longer amount of time. Your pace will improve over time as you work on your base. Working on increasing your speed is like putting the roof on the house. You can't do it until you build the foundation.4 -
@kidrauhldrew Just echoing everything said already. 40 miles is a great goal, as would be 10 or 20 or 500. Whatever fits YOU. Start where you are and work from there. It is all good in this thread.0

Thank you for the advice, I will try out the app myself. You had the same starting goal as me and you are still here so hopefully the 40 won't be impossible for me to reach!
Also thanks to everyone else for the tips and the encouraging words! Who knows, maybe by the end of this month I will enjoy running as much as you guys do!1 -
@kidrauhldrew My first goal in this challenge when I was just starting running again after a longer break in October 2014 was 50km (about 30mi), but I got sick for a week, and only managed 37.5km instead. Two years later I ran 250km in a month. Now I've come to the conclusion that that is a bit much, I like to do some other exercise as well, so I reduced it to 150km per month. Which would have sounded impossible to me when I started!
Don't be intimidated by the people with high milage numbers, everyone starts with short distances. And then you can see as time goes on how far you want to increase your running distance.
@RunTimer Lol, I love the "NOVEMBrrrrr ". And already 22% of your goal on the 3rd, nice!
@JessicaMcB Oh no, of course I wasn't lost - I had GPS on my phone, so I knew exactly where I was. I just didn't know where that path had disappeared to I actually have a rather good sense of directions in most circumstances. I still manage to find myself in the middle of a forest with no trail in sight on a regular basis. But usually because I like exploring new routes, and sometimes what looks like a trail at first glance isn't one, and I stubbornly keep on going for too long before I admit it.
Nothing wrong with your outfit! I have a habit of running to the post office / supermarket / whatever for small errands, and consequently show up in workout gear there as well. So far, nobody ever complained. Or maybe people are just too polite to say anything...
@RespectTheKitty I wish you all the best! I hope the new doctor and her medication changes work out well for you.
@Elise4270 I've done the accidentally-deleting-everything-typed thing too often in the past. I've got a firefox addon called "Form History Control" now that autosaves what I type, so if I do something stupid I can still get most of the text back.... That being said, I really hope the PT exercises do their magic and save you from surgery!
@mom3over40 Somebody told my once that a good time to start tapering for a race is "number of days = half the distance in km". So for a 42km marathon you'd do your last serious long run 21 days from the race, for a half marathon 10 days out, and so on. So a long run on Sunday should be fine for a 5k. But you also won't lose much or even anything regarding your HM training if you reduce your 10mi run to 8mi, to get a bit of extra rest.
Good luck with your race!
@MNLittleFinn Nice work sticking to the rest day. Those can be hard...
Recently stumbled over this and totally agree:
----
Okay, it's decided - I will try a running streak in November, let's see how many days in a row I manage
Yesterday evening I had the spontaneous motivation to go for a run when a fuse in my apartment room, and none of the spares I had would fit. That circuit powers the bedroom lights, the wifi router and the fridge, so I didn't really want to wait a day before replacing it, but taking the car for buying a single item seemed overkill. So running it was.
This morning I just went for a short 20min run before work. It was really cold, but sunny outside. I love this kind of weather!

@kidrauhldrew - Here's the standard advice for beginners:
So . . . my chapter 20 is that I'm coming off injury, only running 35-40 miles a week right now, and might not make my nominal goal of 200 miles in November. That could sound pretty intimidating to someone who runs a mile and a half. But that's not what my chapter 1 looked like.
My page 1 looked like, "I wonder if I can become a runner. Here's a 5K plan." I set out to run intervals, run 3 minutes, walk 1 minute. I ran for one minute, and was compelled to slow to a walk. Ended up making a 2-week remedial training program to develop enough so that I could *start* the 5K training plan.
The 200+ mile months didn't come till a bit over 4 years after that. It takes time to develop.
Best advice I was given as a new runner: "If it's too hard, run slower." It took me a long time to appreciate what that meant, but it was spot on.11 -

Upcoming races:
11/12/17 Syracuse HM
I left work early today after a tough week, and had a nice run along the lake. Saw these 2 swans and had to stop and take pictures.
It was pretty chilly to start with the wind off the lake, but turned out to be a good run. Then went home and took the dog out for a little hike at a different lake.
Now I'm all tired and tucked in on the couch, with a glass of wine. Great way to end the week.

@katharmonic You should look into the Daytona Beach HM! It is really fun. You run around the Daytona 500 track and even though I am not into car racing, it is just really cool. They have the loud speakers and it just has a very fun feeling to it. Then you run to the beach and back. Very flat (except for one bridge). Great weather every year! This will be my 3rd year doing it! http://www.daytonabeachhalf.com/ Feb 4th!
Oh, that would be fun @ddmom0811 but I have another trip in February, so it's too close to that I think.0 -
11/1 10miles
11/2 4miles
11/3 12miles
12 mile suck fest this morning. I felt unusually tired and my legs are really tired/worn out now. I’m glad that it’s over. It’s crazy how last week’s 14 miler felt pretty good and this week’s 12 miler felt terrible.4 -
@kidrauhldrew To be honest, the hardest part is simply trying to keep up with this thread.
A longer run this morning, on which my shin felt fine for the most part, but the ache slowly increased throughout the day. Maybe I do need to cut back on the mileage after all, so I'll do that whole "listen to your body" thing and scale things back more. Sucks big fat monkey balls because I love distance.
01 - 12.90
02 - 7.91
03 - 14.43
Total: 35.24 / 175 miles
