@_nikkiwolf_ If I remember correctly we have like 12cm on the ground. we got about 7cm last night, but had had some melting before that. I think our total is like 15cm has fallen.0

First run of November done! Week 9, day 2 of 10K. Five minute warm up, (run 10 minutes, walk 1 minute) 4x, five minute cool down. Easy enough on paper, and I've already done it once before.
I did so many dumb things. I checked the course for the turkey trot (smart). There's a hill. 140' rise over .65 miles. Really not terrible, but the few times I've run outdoors, a 50' rise feels like Everest. So I know I should train hills (smart). Do I google plans? No (dumb). Do I start gradually, taking baby steps? No (dumb).
Get on the treadmill. Start the app. I walk at 3.0 (20-minute mile). Crank the incline to 4.0. My heart rate is already in the 180's before I'm even running. Complete my warm up (and believe me, I'm warm!) and start my run at 4.5 (13:33-minute mile). I know I can do ten minutes at this pace because I've done it before. Except for the incline. I died about a minute in. Dropped my pace to 4.2 (14:29-minute mile). Dropped the incline to 3. Then to 2. Finished the mile at 1. No incline for the rest of the run and only running at 4.0. My heart rate stayed in the 190's most of the time, even with the one minute recovery walks. I pushed through and finished the run even though it wasn't pretty.
I need help! What's a better way to get ready for the turkey trot? Does anyone know what 140' increase in elevation over .65 miles works out to on a treadmill incline? Should I just focus on the 10K training app and just worry about building endurance and the hill will happen, one pace or another?
My entire goal for the turkey trot is to finish. My ideal goal is finish in less than 46:26 (my treadmill 5k time).6 -

@eponine1984 You're overthinking it. For a turkey trot, just enjoy it. If you're worried about the hills, follow your plan, but get outside and run on a course that has some inclines to it.4

@eponine1984 One idea would be to run the actual course (if traffic or geography permits) a week or two before the race. I used to do that a lot so I'd know where trouble might be.2

@eponine1984 I don't think you'll have a problem beating that TM time. In fact, I think if you want to do some incline work that's fine.
But I do believe that this close to race day, you should continue to work on the 2.45 miles thats not uphill.
I see most people in a 5k walking the hills, you won't be alone if you need to take a break. I also find that if the hill is early in the race it's harder than mid way to the end once I'm warmed up. I probably should do a warm up mile first, but then it'd make that last mile twice as hard (mentally)!

@MNLittleFinn hi, I'm Heather and I'm an over thinker. It's nice to meet you
I do really well having a plan in front of me (like c25k is awesome. It told me when to run and when to walk and I love it). I guess I still feel like I'm not a runner and it's got to be a lot harder than it seems. Like honestly, just put one foot in front of the other, right?
Side note- I asked my sister what to do when I realized the course had a hill. How I should train, etc. she told me "run hills." I know that, but I still expect there to be more to it. Like I should need a complete system of squats and hamstring curls in order to go up a teensy hill.5 -

LOL. Welcome to the club. you have no clue how many different plans I've overthought. This close to the race, just enjoy the running, follow your current plan and just run outside where you can get on some hills for real. That's my favorite way to do things. You don't need a new plan, the one you have is just fine. Just refine it by adding in inclines where you can and keep going with that. a Turkey trot is just supposed to be fun, don't let the fun go away by thinking about it too hard (like I did last year....) You got this!3 -
I've never been a runner but it's something I've always wanted so I'll start with 25 miles and see how it goes. Hopefully checking in here will keep me motivated to meet my goals.8

@eponine1984 to answer your question, it's 4%
% grade = rise/run = 140' /0.65 miles = 140'/3432' = 0.04 = 4%
But I agree with @MNLittleFinn

@7lenny7 I did that math, and it seemed too easy. Shouldn't a sine or a cosine be involved? See, I really do make things too hard...2

You'd use sine or cosine if you wanted to find the angles.

I am also a member of Club Overthinkers. I ran the course for the 10k I did last weekend twice (because the first time I ran it, I accidentally did it in reverse). I'm glad I did because there was one, long, slow incline of a hill. I was able to run up the whole thing and keep a decent pace because I knew what was ahead of me and knew how much I could blow on the hill until I got to the glorious downhill part.4

skippygirlsmom wrote: »@Orphia did you do the “Bloody Long Walk 35km” last year? The name sounds so familiar.
Yes, @skippygirlsmom my friend, good memory!
I did it with an old friend of mine, and we're doing it again together this year.
We also did the "Go The Extra Mile" 50 km walk together in May.
@orphia I remember thinking what a great name for a race!
I took a rest day today, Skip had sectional meet to try and qualify for State. She was ready so ready for this race, just before mile 1 her toe got caught in a hole and she face planted, flat out no time to get hands out face plant. She finished the race, but in obvious pain with a time of 23:44. She is heartbroken that her senior year of XC ended like this, she just cried and cried. Her private coach was there and told her this simple thing "high school was the crumb to get you hungry for college running, you are just beginning not ending". I love her, nothing I said was helping at all.5 -

@skippygirlsmom Poor Skip!!! Oh I feel so bad. But you were there for her and she will recognize that. She probably just needs a day to cry. I'll cry with her.0

November goal: 70 miles
11/1: 3.4 miles
11/2: 3.1 miles
6.5/70 miles
Nice run today, but it was hot. The weather is so crazy here. Tuesday it was 49F and today it was 86F.
@eponine1984 I'm also an overthinker and I'm still not 100% comfortable telling people I'm a runner. I don't know why because I run 4 days a week. I've never run on a treadmill, but I think that your best bet would be to just run outside some if possible. And if you can run the actual course then that is awesome. Plus if you need to walk on the hill then do it. I'm sure there will be others walking as well.

@skippygirlsmom I'm so sorry for Skip! And you. There are few things more difficult than seeing your child's heart broken.0
