Barbie - "Seek every opportunity to be active."
That's a phrase that often echoes through my mind. I live up to it in some contexts – walking to the grocery store and choir practice and wherever else I'm going that's within walking distance. So whenever I can combine activity with whatever else I'm doing anyway, I do.
Unfortunately it hasn't yet prompted me to develop a habit of "unnecessary" activity. It's still far too easy for me to prioritize other things. But I'm working on it! One step at a time.

Chris - good to see you back here! Happy for you that the bad boss is gone and you got a raise - good stress relief right there!
Rori - I think you have the ideal job - I admire anyone who can work from home. I tend to get too easily distracted unless it's something that I really, really want to do. Thanks too for the reminder about long term health care insurance. I'm going to call our insurance guy - several years ago he mentioned there were all kinds of different plans out there with deductibles, etc. I don't feel like paying for more insurance but if it's affordable might be nice to have a little back up if our savings gets tapped hard.
I do well at logging in our expenses, not so good at logging in what I'm eating, althought lately I've been using Fitday to see how much calcium I'm getting- MFP doesn't appear have enough columns to add that, unfortunately. I hadn't paid much attention to calcium intake before I had my DXA scan last month (bad me, I know) but now am paying better attention. Trying to get as much from food intake as possible, I think I read somewhere that excess calcium can contribute to kidney stones? Yikes, been there-done that. Need to make sure I drink plenty of water.
Something else I track is when (and how much) our puppy poops . She is pretty much housebroken but still surprises us now and then. She doesn't like the rain but when I know she needs a potty break before she goes to bed based on what she's eaten and expelled each day, I make her stay out and walk in the dark until she produces. Going to pick up a raincoat for her when I'm in town tomorrow. Now that she is pretty much full size and a bit on the chubby side, I'm backing off a tad on her food intake which should help.
Felicia - glad you are back safe and sound, sorry about your sister - good that you were able to visit her this fall. Sending hugs and prayers your way and hope your niece is doing OK.
Sending healing thoughts to all of you with bone fractures!
Still concerned about Lenora - and where is Tere? Leigh? Hope we hear from these gals before Christmas.
Nice and rainy today. Heading out for a haircut later this morning.
Have a good day everyone!

Becca: Your DH's pill holder is the most elaborate one I've seen. I'm fortunate that I don't take many prescriptions but I have quite a few vitamins and supplements. DH has two pill caddies that provide two week's worth of pills at a time and takes a number of prescriptions and also vitamins & supplements. I have one that says am and pm, but it is used as once a day for two weeks. Now the dog has his own--morning and evening. He has his own pill cutter, too. He's a good old dog and worth the trouble.
Rori: I have heard that elephants, mules & horses have very long memories. It was sweet that Arrow came to me, and amazing that he decided to be a good boy. Longfellow's poem sums his character up quite well although he isn't female, "There was a little girl,. Who had a little curl,. Right in the middle of her forehead. When she was good,. She was very good indeed,. But when she was bad she was horrid." :ohwell: He is horrid less often than in the past.
Chris in MA: You have been missed! I am glad to see that you are back and thrilled that your work life has improved.
Felicia: So sorry for your loss. I'm sorry that your sister passed on Thanksgiving.
Myraknits: I exercise more now than I ever did in the past but I'm not remotely close to athletes like Barbie, Machka and Pip. I take yoga classes several times a week, use an exercise bike regularly, and ride a friend's horse one or more times a week. This activity level is something I've worked up to and it keeps me healthier and happier than I've been for a very long time. The trick to a good exercise plan is that it is enjoyable and weather proof. In the Pacific NW, where I live, that means that it includes quite a bit of indoor exercise. :ohwell:
Lanette: I take time-release alondrate once a week for bone density. It is working very well for me. In fact, my bone density is improving. I was very surprised to discover that. I thought the best I could do was hold my own. It takes diet, weight bearing exercise & medicine to accomplish that miracle.
Our housecleaner is scheduled to come today. I need to get dressed and ready for her. There are one or two things that she needs to do differently. I hoped to go to yoga but this is a higher priority.

I just finished reading "Strong Women, Strong Bones" written by the same author as "Strong Women Stay Young". I highly recommend it. I can possibly get one or more copies of the book on Paperback Swap for someone who wants it. If you would like the book, send me a personal message with your first and last name and mailing address, and I'll have the book sent to you as long as there are copies available.

Hi Sisters, to you all who are grieving or dealing with pain and injuries. Lenore I am thinking of you too and praying for a good recovery.
I have been in recovery mode myself, after my half marathon and today I am beginning to feel like myself again. Now I have to start thinking about the next challenge I will set for myself to work towards. I am always trying to make life interesting and different as I get bored easily, so I am thinking about doing a hike called The Tongariro Crossing. It is just a one day hike but you have to organize a car to pick you up at the end and take you back to your own vehicle. A lot of overseas visitors to NZ do it, and the trailhead is only about an hour and a half drive from my house but I've never done it, so shame on me. I think I need to knock this one off the bucket list.
I would like to do all the Great Hikes around NZ. I think there are 9. I've done one already called The Abel Tasman. I've got lots of other goals for this summer as well. Summer starts Dec 1 here! YAYE.
I am taking my van in to have a leak fixed today. Can't wait to get Daisy Duke back on the road again. I took the seats out of her and put a bed in the back and I've got everything I need for a few days of camping, including a porta potty. I also want to do a photo shoot in the sand dunes with my unicorn Esmerelda. I still am working towards my weight goals. I want to lose about ten pound of fat, and turn my body into muscle again and pump up the good youth hormones, so kettlebells, here I come!
So there, I have posted my December goals early, LOL. Good to be ahead of the game. Wendy5 -
Some one said yesterday that I really needed to wear my boot to bed. S I tried that yesterday. Wad surprised that not only did I go to sleep but I think I slept pretty well. Only problem was that when I got up to g potty, I wore m horseshoe on my right foot. Big mistake! Oh the pain it gave me in my back.
Felicia, I a, so sorry about your sister. A family can rationalize all we want that she is no L ver suffering, homecoming to be with God on thanksgiving day and all that. But when it comes down to it, your sister died and every year you will remember that when you sit and celebrate on such a thankful day.
Oh that boot. It helps but oh what it does to you negatively. To go to bed, you have to take those industrial strength Velcro strap off, get out of it using only one hand, put your Jammie's on with only one hand and then put the boot back on with only one hand. I didn't want to ruin my good blankets so I had to find something to put on my bed. I'm sorry to say my good blanket and nice quilt just landed in a heap on the floor at the end of y bed.

Thank you for the perfect Thread. I'm 51 and quit smoking Sept. 23. I am now about 25 lbs heavier since then but I am taking over. My goal today is to track and move. So far so good on the tracking. I will get some exercise in after lunch. Here we go ladies. Wish me strength, will power & luck.10

Hi ladies,
Rori, Yippee! The scales are good to you this holiday season.
Chris, sorry to hear you have been having some problems but good news about the raise. I find that I am affected by the change in seasons, especially from Fall to Winter. I’m not much of a winter person and don’t ski or anything so Winter comes with being more house bound on the weekends. I’m so proud of you for identifying what you need to do and taking steps to do it. Financial problems are draining and especially around this time of year when everywhere you go people are trying to get you to buy something. One year when I was having financial issues I ended up just giving people little redeemable cards, made out of scrape paper, with things I could do for them (babysitting, cleaning, etc.) Not sure how far away your family is but maybe this is an option for you. My family seemed to like them. Hang in there girl, you have this and are on your way to feeling better. ((HUGS))
Michele, not sure what a closed hand is, but congrats any way.
DJ, sorry you have decided to not use your tree anymore. Can you store it all decorated so that all you would have to do next year is bring it from where you stored it?
Felicia, I am so sorry about your sister. When someone dies on a holiday, each holiday afterwards reminds you of them so it is extra hard. I hope you had a nice time in Israel and that you will feel like sharing when you can. ((HUGS))
Evelyn, hope you are feeling better soon. ((HUGS))
Myraknits, I’m the last person to ask about exercising as I don’t. My goal was to start exercising with kettlebells but hurt my wrist so had to put that off. I know everyone here has encouraged me to exercise and that it has many benefits. I think you need to do what you think you can and not beat yourself up if you aren’t perfect at it. Walking is a step in the right direction. As far as being hungry, that started to pass for me after about a month. I do leave enough calories to have a snack at night as that is the time I feel like eating the most. Just find what works for you as everyone is different.
Machka, of course you are hungry, this is the season when food is in your face everywhere! lol
Allie, hope you find your sleeping groove soon. Can you slowly start to go to bed a little later. Maybe 15min increments?
((KJ))
Wendy, your hiking plan sounds interesting. And you are ahead of the game with your Dec goals.
Joyce, sorry you are having trouble with the boot but I’m glad you were able to sleep. Yes, doing things with one had is the pitts. You don’t realize until you don’t have them how much you really do with 2 hands.
Mmartin, welcome to the group. Seems like you have started with an attainable goal. Wishing you strength, will power and luck. Remember, no one is perfect. What do you want us to call you?
Well I thought my appt with the orthopedic specialist was today and I might be getting this *(^*%&^%* half cast off. I am so ready. But my appt is tomorrow. Good thing I checked.
Work has been crazy busy and I’m trying hard to catch up. Wow, just being out 2 days and I’m so far behind. No one does the bulk of my job when I’m out. I’d like to put our tree up this weekend but will have to have some help. Maybe when DD takes a break from writing her paper I can have her bring up the bins and tree.
Well lunch time is over so back to the grind. Wishing everyone a good rest of their day.

It's Red Planet Day!
Couldn't resist... I'm a space geek! "Red Planet Day commemorates the launch of the Spacecraft Mariner 4 on November 28,1964. The 228-day mission of Mariner 4 brought the spacecraft within 6,118 miles of Mars on July 14, 1965."
SueBDew - Oooh, can I ever identify with trying to feed people with dietary restrictions. My sister-in-law is on a low-carb diet for pre-diabetes, and my niece is allergic to a host of stuff including dairy products and canola oil. And then there are the ones who are just picky... for the most part I don't worry too much about the picky ones, though, as I figure they can find something on the table to eat.
Katla - I love the tradition of giving puppets to your grandchildren! How wonderful that the woman is still making them so many years later. Oh, and your quote about Arrow is something we say about Luna often... "And when she was bad she was 'orrid!"
Sue in WA - That is worrisome to think they can't keep medical records straight! Makes you understand why people going in for surgery on one limb often take a sharpie to the other one to make sure the surgeon operates on the correct part! I think I'd scrawl "DO NOT OPEN" across my belly if I were going in for hand surgery etc.! When Mom was in the hospital we had to mark the arm with lymphedema risk to keep them from poking needles in that hand.
Chris - Sorry you were in a dark place. That's great news about your job, though. It's amazing how much damage a bad boss can inflict. Money is tight here too, so I'm doing hand-made gifts for my family. Need to get out the pressure canner and start rounding up recipes this week if I'm going to get everything done in time for Christmas.
DJ - It's not surprising that hand kept getting worse, since you weren't able to rest it. I'm also very strongly right-handed... when I sprained my thumbs year before last I had to get my beloved husband to fasten and unfasten my bras for me!
Felicia - My deepest condolences on the loss of your sister. You and your family are in my thoughts.
Myraknits - Love your user photo. Is your hair still that color? I grew mine out so I could see what it looks like under there, but I normally wear mine a similar shade. I'm impatient for it ALL to get grey so I can go blue or purple without having to bleach it.
mmartin7613 - Congratulations on quitting smoking! Sounds like you're on the right track.
I'm having fun playing with the Misfit tracker, except that I find it irritates me to wear it 24/7 so I keep taking it off at my desk then forgetting to put it back on when I get up. So far it tells me I'm not exercising enough... which I knew, but it's a good reminder. I glance down there at my wrist and think, "How can I get in a few extra steps?"
Enjoy your day, and lift a glass (of water, of course!) to Opportunity, Curiosity, and Spirit.

Ugh! One thing after another. AT&T dug a hole to run cable at the top of our yard last week and today I noticed that walking on the grass near the house was like walking on a sponge. DH inspected and evidently they hit the water line. We have called the county water works several times and my neighbor has called. We are worried that this might ruin the foundation of our home. Good thoughts and prayers needed.2

Lanette - Bursitis! Hmm... I'll think about that if the knee pain comes back. The description wasn't spot on, but darn close. Thanks for the suggestion!
Felicia - I'm so sorry to hear about your sister. It must have been difficult for you, being so far away. I can't imagine losing my sisters. They are such an important part of me! My parents are now so old I've been forced to think about losing them, but my sisters...!
Chris - Nice to hear from you. I must be naïve or lucky or something, but I'm always astounded that bozos like your former boss can keep their jobs. I hope you find a good place - be it in your newly "cleansed" current job or elsewhere.
Aw, Terry... how unfortunate that you are not a winter person. And you a Vermonter! Your strategy of giving people redeemable cards for Christmas is one my then-adult daughter used once. I got a whole deck of cards with legends like "One head massage", "One kitchen cleanup", "One dinner for two". I was so touched I didn't actually use all of them, preferring to keep them as mementos. It is truly the thought that counts!
Yvonne - You're having fun playing with "the Misfit tracker"??? What the h...?
My husband just flew south for a meeting and will spend a couple days at our apartment on the mainland. Looking in the mailbox, he found my new debit card - lying fully exposed and without its envelope. We WANT to believe that the mailman put the envelope in the wrong mailbox, and somebody opened the letter by accident, not bothering to look carefully at the address, then dumped it in our box when they realized their mistake. But just to be sure, I contacted my bank and had them block the card. What a hassle! They'll send me a new one, hopefully to the address where we actually LIVE this time. :grumble:

Chris, sorry to hear about all the challenges you've had and happy to hear about the end of the bad boss. Bravo to you for declaring that you won't be sending gifts. Taking care of yourself is the best thing you can do for your loved ones.
Wendy, your planned hikes sound great. Also congrats on finding the right ways to motivate yourself. I like predictable daily stuff and that what works best for me, but it obviously won't work for you.

KATLA, heck we got into royalty status, when we went thru the transplant at OHSU. In the beginning, when he had to go thru 3 times a week, we realized we were ( still are), part of a secret hero club. We all have the same canvas bags we carry the pill container in, and we smile and say simple sentences to each other. "How long for you"? Its quite touching!

Carol - what a shame! Hope it's nothing too serious and the water department has come out for a look-see and repair by now. If you don't get any action, maybe a call to the county commissioners is in order.

Oh my DAH-ling Becca... I don't quite understand all these coded sentences you present, but I can tell they mean a lot to you, so I say More Power To Ya! I'm totally in awe of your (and your husband's) ability to cope with his transplant and all the issues it raises. Hi all!
I've been spending a happy evening catching up on a French tv thriller we missed last Saturday. I just love to hear French. I watched it on my tablet because our Samsung tv has given up on BBC iplayer. Apparently Samsung forgot to renew the licence. We've researched the problem and just bought an Amazon Fire dongle for the tv, which apparently might rectify the ÷×+=# up. We will see. We used to use iplayer a lot until it packed up. I do have a recorder. I'm much too frugal to pay for services. We just pay the tv licence fee (everyone has to) and everything else is free if you have wifi.
Still eating a bit too much. Not much too much, but not little enough to lose. Today was yoga, so not a big calorie burn.
Feeling a little apprehensive about tomorrow. Got to set the alarm so I wake up in time to do my exercises etc before I catch the train. I'm going to pick up a picnic on the way to my cancer friend. She requested dessert. And why not! She's already on nightly morphine, so a little dessert can't hurt.
My step daughter (younger one) is coming down on the 27th December. After work. By train. Hmmmmmmmm! We usually eat early, so that is a stretch. Don’t know if DSIL and boyfriend will join us that day, or not. I'm feeling just a bit stressed about it all, but I'm sure I will get my head around it. My freezer is my best friend. We are in Hove until the 26th. Or maybe I can feel a short walk to the local pub coming on so soon after Christmas .
I think I need to chill.
Carol - keep those calls going! You have truly had your fair share of house troubles! Today our painter friend came over to put a new grill up over the vent where he found the wasps nest and to paint over where the damp came in. Looks ok now. I didn't want any potential buyers to think we had hidden problems.

Penny, Penny, PENNY, go-o-oo, to sle-ee-ep... I sang that all opera-y for yooo-,ooh! My husband just rushed in asking if I was OK! Hahaha!
I have been reading a book called "Fit To Live", by Pamela Peeke MD. I realize just how much of a survivor I am, and my current Power Why, ( a phrase that you think of when you are confronted with a situation of stress) is "He is strong, I am strong"!
Thinking back, why I derailed on Jenny Craig was pretty simple. I decided to put myself last, financially it wasn't working, and the mental moment I decided to take off my wife's hat, and hot glue the caregivers hat on. The perfect storm to, as the book defines as " becoming a bottom feeder", eating what is leftover, and mostly trash.
I'm learning to realize I have a lot of mental fat! Its interesting how I handle stress. Some of the tips the book mentions is learning to adjust, and adapt. The worst problems can be overcome by using those two words. Its problem solving your own life! I'm eager to use them on a daily basis.

Went hiking today in the TX hill country. A lovely little hike then while my husband was on a conference call I went and ran sprints on the treadmill. It's the first time I've seen a treadmill that has a negative incline option. I could actually set it to run downhill, which was weird because I felt like I was going to run into the console. A nifty option for those training for hill runs though.
Felicia - so sorry about your sister.
Peach - water issues .... plumbing ..... sounds like the worst to me, any plumbing issues inside or out turn into disaster for us.
Misfit trackers.... that's a hoot. I use my fitbit just so I can be challenged by my grandson to step contests. I'll be sure to wear it on the day of the marathon! Although that kid does an average of 12 miles a day in the course of normal activity.

Penny at the POLE,
You can jump on the fleabox if you wanna! I give you full reign! Dance like Tom Cruise!
You know once for a dress up to go to the dance at our nudist resort, I brought along one of my husbands white starched dress shirts. I wore it with my mothers black pumps, and a strand of pearls, (my mom would've died knowing that).... Oh Lord, my husband said it was so...sexy! During the day the resort is PG, so no overtly sexual innuendos allowed. At the dance though, you put ON clothes to be sexy or whatever! There are strict rules there too. No dancing overly sexual. There is even a dance matron to tell you to leave if you are! Crazy when I think about it.
