WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR APRIL 2018

I found a good home for "Younger Next Year for Women".
Jake is able to drive now. He is feeling better and we went to lunch at our favorite Chinese restaurant where we had our usual and brought half home for a second meal.
It is drizzly here which is nothing compared to the winter weather some of you are having but it has discouraged me from working in the yard.
Stats for today:
*18,000 steps
*195 minutes walking Sasha and Bessie
*131 minutes riding the exercise bike

Hi,
Just quickly a couple of notes...even electric based smoke detectors have batteries. We changed our out to 10 year batteries. The chirping freaks out the dogs.
We include oven and fridge in our rentals. Neither has room for a dishwasher. Washer and dryer are tenants' responsibility. Even our realtor said we go overboard in cleaning. I have military past, clean is just that. I don't feel anyone should move in then have to clean again.
UTIs ...I use to get them ALL the time. My old doctor put me on low dose antibiotic for a year. Also told me no baths. The only way I could soak in a tub was to take a shower to get clean, then clean tub, then I could soak. Needless to say, it has been years since I soaked in one. Other than epson salt soaks for yeast infection from #$%^. Between those two things and cranberry juice every day for 3 years, I have done well. ((Hugs))
Cold, snow flurries and windy here today.
Hugs, congrats, and welcomes.

Rori, DJ told us a couple of weeks ago that she has been very busy with her Women of the Moose responsibilities and hopes to be back when those activities begin to slow down. I sure hope so, I miss her like crazy.
Joyce was having so much pain in her fingers trying to use the keyboard I wonder if she just gave up trying to post for a while. I did see that she had posted on Facebook yesterday afternoon so hopefully she is all right.
We too are having beautiful weather for a few days, rain coming this weekend which is great because we really need it.
Hugs, my friends

Heading upstairs to a presto log in my bedroom, ,( in the fireplace lol)2 -
Did hula hoop for 5 minutes. I’m actually getting to where the hoop stays up for about 2 seconds – sometimes. But I’m still getting my ab workout in! Then held my plank for 3 minutes (I have a timer). In a few I’ll go to the extremepump class. Then have to go to the church to count, then we are to go to bowling early (this’ll be a lot of rushing for me). Tonight ceramics then mahjongg.
The plan for tomorrow is to do Jillian Michael’s Banish Fat Boost Metabolism DVD
Tracie – why did they close the health clinics? The weather here has been screwy, too. Two days ago I was in shorts, it was in the 70’s. Today they’re calling for it to be in the 50’s. By the end of the week, tho, they’re calling for it to be in the 70’s again. Last night I had such a sore throat, probably due to all this change of temperature.
Mary – Internet and cable – VERY good reason to move! It’s hard to believe how much Shep has grown! What kind of training collar do you have on Shep?
Kim – when I’m under stress, I usually revert to sweets, too. Sweets mixed with fats (like butter and sugar). I have found that dried fruit is sweet enough, just have to avoid the fats. Sometimes I do have a tablespoon or so of olive oil, tho.
Lisa – doing happy dance for you. I know Jess has an app for her phone that has fishes swimming by that her cat really likes. Is there something like that that you can get to keep Egg amused some? So glad to hear that Egg is settling in. Bet he appreciates being the “top cat”. I tell everyone that is using a hotspot because this was a big problem for us. Be sure to turn off (on your computer) where Windows 10(if you have that) doesn’t do its updates if the laptop detects a hotspot. We didn’t realize it, but every time Windows 10 updates, that will use up your data. We didn’t know this until suddenly we were almost out of data. That had never happened to us before! We had to get additional data so that we could pay bills. Jess was talking about what furniture she should keep, etc. and we told her what we have furniture-wise that we had in PA. I think I could count on one hand how many pieces we have. It really was worth it to buy new furniture than to move what we had. We moved the real basics, a bed, a table, some desks, mattresses (which we’ve gotten rid of) end tables (which we’ve gotten rid of), a loveseat (which we’ve gotten rid of), a washer/dryer,TV, that’s about IT
Kylia – can you put into the rental contract that rather than the pet fee, the people will replace the rug when they vacate?
Carol – I’ve been worrying about Joyce, too. Wish she would just pop in and tell us how she’s doing
The guy who usually counts money with me at the church wasn’t there today so we had a sub. I assumed she knew how to work the bill machine, but she didn’t. Next week what I think I’m going to do is use the machine myself while he’s there for me to ask questions of.
Had an end-of-season lunch at the bowling alley today so had to get there early. Actually, they served hot dogs and hamburgers but like last year, I brought my own sandwich. Just got tomatoes from them for my sandwich. Took this chocolate dessert, but didn’t have any. It still amazes me how much people want things that are store bought, not homemade. Even another gal mentioned this to me.
Rebecca – that’s wonderful that your hubby can and does go to the gym with you
Ladycopnh – welcome! Tell us more about yourself (that uniform looks interesting, do tell)
Rye – you DO look great. Wish I could say the same.
Here's my latest creamic "creation"

Scooched the Christmas trunk and things over to make room for card table near potting shelf. Won't move growlight in 'til night temps get above 45. Hoping heat mats will keep area warm enough for cucumbers, too cool outside. Herbs spent the day on the porch, trying to harden them off. Repotted oregano, will do the sage and parsley tomorrow. Will move them out to porch permanently this weekend. The Wasabi came! Potted it up, keeping it in the garage as it prefers shade and coolth. When the garage gets warm, will move it to the creek near the cistern. All in all had a fun day dinking around the kitchen and plants. Foot only aching a little so have great hopes to dance tomorrow night. Thanks again all for the plantars fasciitis fixes.
One of my co-workers believed that holding a hug for 3 seconds past usual time was the thing to do. Her hugs were extra special. So now, gals I'm putting 3 ((( 's around my hugs to you all. Hope the energy gets through.
Heather thanks for the supports and for Hairy Bikers' Soda, pop, fizzy and soft drinks, had something in Britain 50 years ago called "red lemonade" it was the color of orange jello, very sweet, and served iceless (gagh!) Your meals, TV arrangements all sound thoughtful and effective. A little jealous you never run out of things to say to each other, Joe is not chatty. But I'm not resentful, he doesn't object to me socializing with my Line Dancing and T'ai Chi friends, and he is very supportive in other ways. Why on earth would the pharmacy refuse you a pessary or antibiotics because you're over 60? Nuts!
KJ "wearing a nice heel" not silly but sounds masochistic to me! One of the many joys of retirement was purging all but two pairs of heels and thinking I can get rid of those and substitute heeled boots ...
Okie trust someone else was driving you home when you posted
Wendy enjoy the chaos, thanks for the Corrs.
Penny I won't bank on any wireless device, only ethernet cable. Sooo retro, that's me
pip thanks for the background about Kip's accident. Healing thoughts and hoping the neurologist can see what the MRI machine couldn't. "...keep me awake"??? Pip you are a pistol! Could just kiss and hug your pooches to pieces.
Lisa "other people's cooties" Aha! Never knew why shelf liner was my first priority moving in, but it always is. Thanks! Con VERY gratulations on moving into One-derland!
Rye symbiosis maybe spooky, but I'd find it comforting Love the snuggle brothers pic. Taxes done, hooray!
NYKaren Your calf stretch is exactly what the chiro ordered. Thanks!
Rebecca more beads on your bracelet, even amdist moving chaos? YAY YOU! That beautiful view of the sea and the mountains, is it sunset? is it from nearby? great pics! Miss my rollout shelves, they really save your back. Brava for the treadmill time. Well done! Sockets not working? Will the owner fix? Electrical issues are so worrisome.
Karen in Va Love the Haiku... :noway: to the "...wretch like me" time for a new tune Love the Sailors' blessing and your brother's art. So sorry for his condition. (((hugs)))
Lanette "adding a spark to our house every couple weeks. The dogs LOVED her ..." no higher recommendation and happy for the sparkle!
Lenora colonoscopy prep didn't work? Yuck! "bait and switch" reverse mortgages, you are sooo right. Elder abuse IMHO.
Rita your sandals' footbed looks like my yoga toes sandals
Barbie how sweet and peaceful the pic of Bessie and Bernie in Jake's lap. Tumble and Scooter cuddle in Joe's lap and I just have to kiss all 3 when I walk past. "he made no 'helpful' comments" even sweeter!
Katla your grand 'uns are so cute, love the footwear!
Mary in AZ eeeeuuuuuwww. Poor Shep! Thanks for his picture, he's a handsome boy. love the fencing around your site and the shade cactus.
Sharon "Filed my AISH papers" Well done! Fingers X'd.
Trish Oh "neither could be in the loop for medical decisions"? Not even spouses without "medical Will"?
Machka "...and he's been breathing on his own..." Yes! Anxiety attack entirely understandable, glad the run helped, hope the soreness was the "good" kind. Continued healing intentions to you and yours. (((hugs)))
Margaret "...every day is a bonus day for me" true for us all!
Allie so glad you'll have your savvy SIL to be your champion. Tell me she's your brother's wife and not TomCat's sister?
Janetr Thanks for telling us what gift so delighted Olivia, I was wondering.
Kay you are a magician!
Kim meal planning will help, taking care of your self is super important during this difficult time. (((hugs)))
NYKaren the food you prepped sounds luscious.
Rori taxes in retirement aren't just eye-opening, they are wallet-opening. We learned that if we don't have taxes withheld from our 401K distributions, we must make quarterly estimated payments. While those who have their own businesses think, "DOH! No big deal" it was a facer for me that first December. Quickly changed distribution to withhold both federal and both states (we moved) income taxes, but that really negatively affected the bottom line. Had planned on 401K $$ for deck, kitchen re-do, etc. Not gonna happen at least not for a few years. Prayers for your son and his GF.
Welcome Faye, ccindy, Janet, TammieR, sloshmog, MrsTyll, shoppingdiva, Claudia, donnakelley2, Tracey, times60, ladycopnh1.
Also missing Joyce and DamitJanet. Both are logging in, so not tooo worried.

Good morning!
Survived the night without too much burning and itching. Yoga today. I will continue to drink a lot of water and c juice. Applying cream. I just get nervous when I go away, but I know they do have doctors in York!
Rye - you are looking great!
My book is now live on Amazon - both the print copy and the Kindle version. They haven't yet got the description/blurb etc up yet, so it looks a bit bare!!!! It takes a while for them to organise all the accompaniments. I'm going to tinker with my Author Page today so it's up to date.
Of course, I would love to have you ladies read it. The paperback is as good as my poor skills can make it, but the Kindle has some issues with pagination at the beginning. The text reads ok.
The paperback price was fixed by Createspace, but I hope it's not too bad. It is nice to have a real book in your hands!
I'm not allowed to put a link on here and it would be to the UK site anyway, but you can find it on Amazon books. For those who are new to this thread, it is the memoir of the first nine years of my life, living in North London in the 1950s.
It's called Me I Am - A father. A daughter. Innocence betrayed. The subtitle does not appear on the front of the book as there was no space for it. So look up - Me I Am Heather Eyles.
You wonderful women have kept me going and supported me while I have been writing and rewriting and rewriting and editing this book and through the whole difficult business of telling my boys. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Reviews are always extremely welcome and essential for getting it out there, so please, if you have a moment, review it for me. Love you.

Michelle Your Mushroom hatted female ‘gnome’ figure is absolutely adorable! WTG! I picked up a regular (non weighted) hula hoop at the dollar store after I saw your question a while ago and yes, it is MUCH easier to keep a weighted hula hoop up!
Barbara my brown thumb and long line of dead houseplants (as well as feline plant eaters) has kept me from trying to grow my own herbs. But now that my husband is doing some real cooking, we are buying fresh stuff all the time (especially basil and oregano) and I’m tempted to try. Thanks for the retirement tax info, I had not actually considered how much taxes on 401k would impact us!
Janet, Mary, and Michelle Thanks, but I’m pretty sure the mirror is magic and shows the way I WANT to look, not reality. At least it is not really in line with any other mirror in my life! What was the mirror in Harry Potter? The mirror of ESIRED? Lol.
Heels and Boots Actually, Janet you inspired that picture some. Thanks to you I have the boots with heels I’m wearing in that very flattering mirror. I LOVED your boots you showed us (last month I think) and learned on this thread that WIDE calfed boots were a thing. I have not been able to wear full length boots since I was 12 or 13 because I could not zipper them past my calves! (Huge Calves my whole life no matter what weight I’ve been. ). So I went to a larger woman’s clothing catalog site and sure enough they had some faux leather boots on clearance in wide calf sized. I took a chance and !!!! The boots FIT !!! The 2 inch heels in those boots are the first shoes with heels I’ve bought and worn other than the one black low heel pump I have for work/evening dress! I love them!
Thanks for the update that Joyce is on FB! I hope the break from typing here helps her cold finger problem, at least a little!
MachkaStill sending healing and strength thoughts your direction.

Well, I’m up in the middle of the night again. Had some very intense hot flashing lately. I am instantly ( it seems) covered in sweat - drenched. And then pretty quickly ( but not instantly) I drop in temp and end up cold and wet! Making sleeping a challenge. I have taken to bringing a hand fan (wood and fabric version) with me everywhere I go. I know it doesn’t quite match my style, but whatever- it is a life saver!
Hmm, had cooled off enough while writing this to go back to bed and WOOSH, another one . So hmm, what else is up here?
Oh, One couple of very good friends of ours have announced to the world they will be divorcing. It has shaken John and me to the core. They got married a couple of years after we did and I’d have said they were SOLID. Guess not. It scares me. But, it seems to scare John too, and we can talk about it.
We were supposed to go visit them this summer at their (his parents, actually) lake house - ( our semi- annual vacation because it is free other than the travel expense) so we are really going to notice the change. So we are making plans to go see my father this summer, but probably just visiting Daddy, no getaway vacation to the lake for a few days at the same time.
Yes, I’m almost 55 yo and I still call my father ‘Daddy’. It embarrasses John when I do this, but all my life he was Daddy or papa. Not going to change now. He is doing well since he was hospitalized last summer, and he and my youngest brother (with whom he lives) have purchased a treadmill. My brother assured me that papa uses it daily! I guess they put on the ‘talking heads’ (political news commentary shows) and papa watches that while he walks! I can’t think of a more unpleasant way to spend time, but Daddy likes it. But when we go visit, I’m determined to get us walking outside!
Until he was about my age, my dad climbed mountains. Popokatitepital (sp?) and Orizaba mountains in Mexico, Mount Ranier twice to name a few I remember. He had back surgery then and could no longer do the more strenuous climbs - but would go to Nepal, or South America every other year and trek the foothills of the big mountain ranges for a few weeks. He was a precursor to the stairs for exercising craze - he would go downstairs 35 floors 3x a day during the work week as his daily exercise! He said it helped him for keeping in proper shape to do his hiking.
It will be good to see him this summer, it has been a few years since I have been able to visit. Tho we talk on the phone often (short but frequent calls, he is not much of a ‘chatty’ type.).
Ok, my temp is back to normal so I’ll try to head back to bed.
Sending out good vibrations to all!

HEATHER got your book on Kindle this morning. It is so very well written and evocative. You have reminded me of so many things from childhood, the games, songs, food, books. I have very scant memories of my very happy childhood, maybe because of your relationship with your father you stored all the good things very carefully. Enjoying it so much but feeling sorry for that little girl.

morning Two cups of coffee and off I go to a full day of work and afterschool auditions. Busy times ahead for me, time to make up a master list of to dos!

HEATHER couldn't stop reading until I finished it. I've rated 5 stars on Amazon and Goodreads, I'm not very good at writing reviews but will sit and have a think and come up with one. I love your descriptions of everyday life but the underlying menace is still there.
Kate UK5 -
Heather - Ordered your book onto my Kindle, hope to get time to read it soon, and will post a review after. After reading the quick look, I was totally intrigued. As always, you inspire me.
Rye - had to go back, as my skimming yesterday missed your photos. Your silhouette is how I aspire to look... and I, too, have never been able to wear boots higher than my ankle. They still don't make wide calf cowboy boots--I've always simply cut a triangle out of the leather at the back to keep them from rubbing my calf. I always wear them with jeans anyway.
Which reminds me - we checked out a Savers store here, a sort of charity shop, but massive, aisle after aisle of clothes... and I picked up a couple pairs of jeans the next size down. Haven't even tried them on yet, but one pair was $5 and one was $4, so I figured it was worth the risk! The scale showed me down another pound this morning, 19 pounds lost now since January 24, very pleased with that. Hoping to get past that 20-pound mark before I go a-traveling at the end of next week. Looking forward even more to being in single digits, and feel that it really is a possibility. Even if it is quite a ways off, very much something to look forward to. Also picked up a charging station for five bucks, so I can hide some of the wires in a box and charge three items at a time.
Popping up to Fayetteville, AR, this morning to get our son, and bring him back down with to Fort Smith for a couple days. Haven't seen him for a bit over a year, can't wait to hug his neck. We'll be up and back before the furniture gets delivered today, then tomorrow sometime, the washer/dryer, fridge and small chest freezer will be in. Life just gets better and better!
And for those looking for them, Joyce did post on Facebook last night, and DJ also posted on Facebook yesterday morning. Losing Gloria so unexpectedly puts us all on tenterhooks, I think, when one of us doesn't post in a bit. Speaking of which... Dana, if you're checking in on the thread, and you're ever over Fort Smith way, let me know!
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR6 -
HeatherUK- I downloaded on Kindle. Started reading. I love being able to "see" your garden and yard. Just started, but work calling my name. Am anticipating reading more. Thank you for letting us know!
I also downloaded "Younger Next Year for women". Started that one last night. Thank you for the recommendation.
Heels and boots....I love anytime I get to wear them! Of course, I don't get to dress up for work, so love any chance to get prettyfied. Barefoot is my general footwear at home. Tennis shoes or nurses clogs for work. Heels or boots with dresses most other times. I think people at car shows think it is a religious reason I am in dresses, but it is simply that I wear jeans all week long, and find dresses cooler and pretty.
As for renters just replacing carpet when leaving, most of the time they can barely afford the rent. They are responsible for proffesionally cleaning it prior to leaving. In this case it was time to replace it due to wear, but was also trashed by dog. My concern if they replace carpet is the quality of the carpet and install. Rentals definitely are a learning process. So many around us don't allow pets at all. We know that pets are an important part of people's lives, but found they are more diligent in caring for the home if they pay extra .
I am hotspot at home. Alexa can be a data hog! I can't wait to get actual internet! We live in the rural blackout zone. It has been promised this year. Expensive to run to house as we are 1000 feet from road, but paying for extra data on hotspot box isn't cheap either. My DH obviously doesn't pay the bills, he was shocked when I told him how much we pay for direct TV, cell phones, house phone, and hot spot. I take my laptop to the shop every few months to let it update. Also have to turn off wireless on printer as it too is a data hog.
I really should get ready for work. I enjoyed my massage last night and got to grocery! Hair color tonight. Will pull up Rye's photos at work.
Have a warm day! I will think of ya'll and smile to make my own sunshine. We have had more measurable snow days in April than any other April on record!
Hugs, blessings, congrats!

Drinking my coffee before I head outside to run the snowblower! Waaaa!! Our "snow shower" turned into a full blown snow dumping ... 5 inches of heavy wet stuff.5

Michele ~ Would love to see how you have arranged all the ceramics you and your hubby have created. I bet they make a very colorful array around your pool.
Rye ~ You look great! Your father sounds like he has probably lived a wonderful life traveling to all those places to pursue his hobby of climbing.
Mary ~ Your new park spot looks very inviting.
Beth ~ I can’t imagine all the snow you and NY Karen and many more of our Northern chatters are dealing with. I bragged that Spring had sprung over the weekend as it was in the high 70’s. But, yesterday it went down to the 30’s and was icy cold.
Kylia ~ Sorry if this is too much information.
When our last renters left we had to buy one of those machines that gets rid of cigarette smell and ran it for several days. Very expensive. Then we had to replace broken bedroom doors, make repairs in the baths (they moved all the towel bars and didn’t fix the sheet rock), new carpet, new blinds, new screens, painted the entire house inside, replaced a missing fire alarm, repaired the garage door, and a new roof & A/C system (which was needed). We couldn’t charge them for the damage because they had to be evicted after not paying the rent for 2-1/2 mos. When we got all that done, we hired a real estate company to find a new renter and she seems to be very good and responsible.
Heather ~ I will be ordering your book for my Fire tablet but must admit that it takes me forever to read a book. So, I probably will not be commenting on it for a while. I know it will be very successful.
For the last two nights I have slept fitfully and tossed and turned for hours....left side, back, right side and repeat all over again. When I finally get up, I feel like I have been beaten. Told DH that tonight I will get out of bed and stay up if it happens again. May take some melatonin but notice that I have a head ache the next day if I take it.
Good Wishes and Blessings for All,
Carol in GA

Still recovering from our blizzard. 15 inches total. The most for an April storm. Tired.6

I walked 31 km last week, or rather, walked 28.6 km and ran 2.4 km.
So yes, I am exercising ... somewhat ... even if I'm not always logging it on MFP these days.
I’m sorting things out and trying to get my life together again.
My husband is out of sedation and is making small improvements each day. He’s breathing on his own all the time, and swallowing on his own some of the time. He’s also moving all limbs at last, and his head, so he’s not paralysed. But the movements are quite random. It’ll be a long process.

Hello all. Hope it’s not too late to join this group. I’m 51 and a hot mess lately. Let myself go the last few years and keep trying to get on track and fail. I work full time, have two teenagers (16 son home, 18 daughter in college) and deal with a lot of stress with health issues with my mom and husband. These issues definitely put me in a funk and I need to get out of it. I’m hoping this app and group support will help!9

Barbara: I'm not much for news, either, especially national news. I watch local news and national weather news, but not national politics if I can avoid it. :noway:
Heather: It seems that you're getting closer to making the move to Hove. I hope you and DH are happy there. Congratulations on getting the book onto Amazon and in print! WTG!!!!!!!
Rebecca: Congratulations on your workout at the gym!!!! Regarding the electrical sockets that are not working, I would guess that is the landlord's responsibility. Do they live on-island or away?
Lisa: Congratulations on your move!!!!! I hope you love your new hometown.
ladycopnh1: Welcome to a great group of women. Does nh stand for New Hampshire?
Cheri: I also loved Younger Next Year for Women. I hope you enjoy the read and feel supported by what it has to say.
Kylia: We had the chirping smoke detector again today. It is hardwired. There is a battery operated one right next to it. We changed that battery, and the hardwired detector quit chirping. Could it have been letting us know about the low battery? We're planning to call the fire department during regular business hours and ask. :grumble:
Machka: Thanks for checking in! It is encouraging to see that your DH is making progress and is able to move. Yay!!!
Has anyone heard from Wendy lately?
Our fire alarm chirped yesterday and again this morning. We have two alarms, side by side. One is battery operated while the other is hard wired. The hardwired one has been doing the chirping. DH had a thought that the hardwired one might be reporting about the battery one. He changed the battery and the hard-wired one stopped chirping. We'll put a call into the local fire department during business hours this morning to ask if there is more we need to do. Right now it is 6:30 am, so we have a couple of hours to wait.

Good morning! I was scrolling the forum and found this group. Thought I'd jump in if that's okay.
I'm 56 and was just told I need a knee replacement. I'm overweight and the doctor won't touch me unless I get to a BMI of 35 or less. That's at least a 40 lb weight loss. I'm not bitter as he was right and I've known for years I needed to lower my weight, but that doesn't make it any easier. I've had to quit one of my jobs as it was too physically stressful and a likely the cause of my recent escalating knee pain issues.
Soooooo, I'm back at it, trying to better control my pain so I can start exercising more, and trying to ignore those between meal hunger pangs that nag me. UGH!
Hope there's someone out there who can understand the scope of my issues. Thanks for reading!9 -
HI everyone, so happy to find your thread! I turned 56 last month and I feel like these last two years I have become less and less active. It doesn't feel good and I want to change that. I tend to get carried away with goals and perfectionism and then quitting when I'm not "perfect" enough...so I'm starting simple -
April goals- remove two pounds by logging every bite and staying at my calorie goal
- lift weights 3 times a week for 20 minutes
- log 8 glasses of water everyday

Renters I lived most of my life ( or at least 1/2) as a renter. A few observations from that perspective.
If a ‘replace carpet’ fee or clause was part of the deal we would have walked away. We would have been (and were) overjoyed, however to find a rental with hard wood or vinyl ‘hard floor look’ flooring. Wall to wall carpeting and cats didn’t/ don’t mix well.
I never did not get back 100% deposit, but i scrubbed floors/ vacuumed and cleaned Kitchen but don’t recall cleaning blinds/windows/ceiling lights/fans or mirrors so I bet the owner/rental company had to clean up after me. One time in a rental apartment my husband was angry and punched his fist through a very flimsy closet door. We purchased spackle, fixed and repainted the door. By the time we left a year later you couldn’t tell.
We actually were quite ideal tenants except for the cats. (At one point we had FIVE cats). Just after we got married we rented out the second floor of a large duplex (owners, an elderly couple lived below us). We had lived there five years when they told us they were thinking of selling and moving. At that point we took on some of the household chores (the main reason they wanted to sell) like yard work and snow shoveling. We lived there six more years. When we moved out we hired a cleaning service to make the place spic and span top to bottom (that service probably cost us a months’s rent but after 11 years we thought it was the right thing to do). That apartment did have hard wood floors, so no carpet replacement was necessary.
That was the ideal situation though, we became good friends with the owners, and if there was a problem ( leak or something broke- they were motivated to fix it ASAP because they lived in the property too.
But from a renters perspective I’ve been in nightmare rental situations too. Floods (from poor landscaping) broken fixtures taking weeks to get fixed. Shared rental laundry facilities that were never cleaned and sometimes just didn’t have functioning appliances, Hallways that may have seen a vacuum once every 6 months, strewn garbage on the lawn etc. and the one where the refrigerator died and the landlord wouldn’t replace it! The one that the apartment building had shared heat and my apartment was routinely 85+ degrees all winter. The one where the heat was radiators that clicked and banged louder than you could imagine all night long in cold months. And I don’t think I ever had a rental where every electrical outlet actually worked (oh, my that is worrisome now that I think about it).!
All rentals (apartments and houses) we saw in Chicago had all appliances included (except washer dryer- it was a rare rental that even had wash/dry hookups). But in Texas, all the rentals we saw (houses only) included stove, but not refrigerators. Anyone’s guess if there was washer/dry hookups and/ or appliances. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
I never encountered pet fee monthly. But one or two extra months deposit was often required. (And always returned).
Just some renter memories.
