Carol can you contact his doctor with your concerns or neighbors. There is social services but that adds another layer to the problem. It is a delicate problem. I like Lanette's advice too!1

@grandmallie, I get these so bad I cry!! I haven't had one in a while and think it's because I've cut out diet coke/coke zero and I'm drinking more water. I take magnesium and vitamin d because a nurse friend told me that should help. I always have diet tonic water with quinine around the house. I had one really bad about a month ago and could not even move with crying, it hurt so bad. Usually, with the tonic water, it is gone in just a few seconds.
I try to remember to shake out my legs during the day especially after sitting or standing too long. I also rub Epson salts into my legs during my bath. If I still get them I rub with Arnica oil and that usually takes care of them.3 -

Leg cramps up your magnesium intake. Also pickle juice helps. When I am training for a marathon I do that and something else. When I have another minute I’ll post1

Thank you to the runners and cyclists giving me tips. I still haven't been out to enjoy my new bicycle, since it was raining again today. Going slow for the running sounds like great advice. I read about a marathoner who, in spite of being much older than his competition, still beat them in a days long marathon. He wasn't faster; he went along at a slow shuffle, and they laughed at him. But like the tortoise to the hare, he had the last laugh. He didn't sleep, so when they were taking their rest, he shuffled past their distances. He sort of zoned out and kept on going. My faulty memory keeps me from remembering the specifics. Ah, found it! https://elitefeet.com/the-legend-of-cliff-young
I get leg cramps too, and have for most of my life. When I get them, I immediately get my foot flat on the floor as soon as I can move without screaming. My toes are always pointed when these cramps hit, and snapping my foot to a 45 degree angle stops it. If I can't do it quickly, the cramp lingers, and I do some hamstring stretches. I had a friend who insisted putting a bar of regular soap in your bed will stop the cramps--no idea why.

Here are two of my happiness commandments:
What's fun for me may not be fun for others and vice versa.
You can choose what you do, but you can't choose what you like.
I eat five small meals a day--the first before six AM and the last about 6 PM and go to bed at 7:30 PM.
I eat a lot of the same food every day and spend as little time as possible preparing food.
I've tried riding a bike and running and don't like either one, but I walk for hours a day and ride a recumbent exercise bike while watching TV most afternoons. Also I go to two line dance classes a week.
I wear similar clothes every day and shop for new clothes only to replace something that has to be thrown out.
That's what is so special about this thread. We are all heading for similar goals and have so many different routes for getting there. We are respectful of each other and embrace each other's unique paths.

that bar of soap thing works for me, I don't know why. but have one there all the time. and it stops them for me too5 -
Did an advanced strength DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do a Bosu DVD.
More Newcomer website stuff: Adra just sent me some more applications, which she’s done in the past. For some reason, she also sent them to Greg. I guess we shall see in a few days if he enters them or not. Vince thinks she sent them to him so that he can “activate” them. It should be interesting, I don’t know how you can activate someone who isn’t on the directory! You know, I know that Greg doesn’t want to work with me, but I really thought Adra did. Maybe I’m wrong. Guess I’ll just give it some time and just keep doing what I’ve been doing. Wish I could find someone who was a REAL web designer. The problem is that the group doesn’t want to pay any money. Personally, I think they should make the investment, if anything so that the gal who is (supposedly) going to be the webmaster will have someone who knows what they’re doing and talking about to ask a question of.
I like to prelog my meals. There have been times when I think I’m under calories but when I prelog I find out that I’m really not and can sometimes eliminate something so that I am under calories.
Welcome everyone new!
I really like interval workouts, too. Sometimes I’ll do them on the elliptical and sometimes on the treadmill. Mostly on the elliptical just because that’s much easier on the knees. But sometimes I do do them on the treadmill. That’s probably the kind of exercise that I’ll do when I go up to help Denise.
CSSJ – welcome back! I’m sorry, I don’t remember your name. A one year shopping ban???? I don’t know if I could ever do something like that.
Denise called. It looks like a boy. She was very excited to find out the sex. Personally, and I told her, to me it wouldn’t make a difference if it was a girl or a boy or an alien. As long as it was healthy.
After the Green Room stopped and got gas then bought chicken thighs to make this weekend. I probably should make something for the gal at the Y who lets me go in for free. I know she likes ginger. I’ve made her ginger cookies, muffins, breads, cake. Does anyone have a recipe for something else?
Newcomer bowling tonight
Jess comes home tomorrow and then flies to St. Kitts Sat. She’s evidently going to bring Shadow here but she asked if we could meet Colby ½ way to give him Shadow when we go to FL. She feels (and she’s right) that the condo is just too small for 5 cats. Really, it’s pretty small for 4, but at least they all get along. In a way, I’m a bit concerned about all the changes Shadow is being put thru. First Jess goes to St. Kitts, Shadow is with Colby, then she’s down here, now she’s back up in VA (well, I can understand Jess wanting her cat with her), back here, back to VA, and I don’t know if back here or not. Well, I really don’t have a say in what she does with her cat.
Tracey – I’m negative, too and had to get the Rogan. Happy birthday to your gd
Vince has been working on organizing the Christmas decorations
Yvonne – hope you win! Good idea to start getting prepared for your trip

Penny & Pip: What are the chances that the two of you are actually sisters? Seems plausible. At the very least, you seem to be sisters of the heart.
Carol in GA: It sounds as though you have a serious worry regarding your DBIL. Good luck to you & your DH. Is he close enough to drop in on him a couple of times a week? Do you think he needs to be in an assisted living facility?
Clowe1028: Thanks for posting the link to the real skinny on fat. I watched this series before and would love to see it again.
Cathy in Arlington: We’re waiting for delivery of a new Whirlpool dishwasher. The first one arrived with a sharp crease in the door and was sent back without ever coming into our house. Hopefully the replacement will be here in the very near future. Our old dishwasher is barely limping along. :ohwell:
Are any of you watching the Outlander Series on Starz? I bought the books as they came out and have read them all, some of them more than once. I am so impressed with the TV production. They’ve done a stellar job so far.

Karen-I love what you did with GLAD!!!!! No more news tonight, but Paige(my niece) did post on FB, so things are still progressing the right way!
I am on page 9, finally! I am excited for the weekend since my husband will be hunting again. Last weekend of the season. Reason one for my love of his hunting is he gets out of my hair for short periods of time. Second, I spend less at grocery as I don't have to buy any red meat. Third, I get ME time with no interruptions! Fourth, I get more done in the early morning (like 4 am) than I do after work and dinner at 8 pm. I love the running and biking. Maybe in my future. For now I just need to move again. Steps have only averaged about 6000/day. It will happen. I will make it happen.
Felicia- I understand the tiny and extra weight. At my highest non-pregnant I was 155 and it hurt. I
finally got down to the 130’s and have struggled to get out of the 120s all of 2018. I had a few glimpses but need to get serious again. I was 95 lbs. when I met my husband 25 years ago, I have NO desire to be that small again, but 115 is my happy spot. We CAN do this together with all these ladies
Lisa- I love the drafting table. I too think it will work great!
Carol- I have my Grandmother’s old cookbook. It is an old date book with cutouts and handwritten recipes. I use her pecan pie recipe and cranberry salad recipe every Thanksgiving. One of my friends has a severely fatty liver. She is now pure vegan. It has helped tremendously. Luckily, she is also a fabulous cook!
Bonnie- My husband is the cookie monster in our home. He loves thin mints and Oreos. I am figuring I am going to have to start baking chocolate chip cookies for him. At least then they wont have artificial things in them! When his AFIB first started he was dropping weight so fast it made me want to throw things at him. Now that he is on meds to control the fast rhythm, he hasn’t changed his eating style and has put back on the 20 he lost and added another 15. I told him we needed to work on that for his health. I then reassured him that I love him at any size but want to keep him around for a while. His father died at 52. My husband is now 55, so planning on doing what I can to encourage a little loss and a long life.
Cari- 69 lbs. in 5 months is AMAZING! WOW! Just WOW! I love sweet potatoes and try to bake them about once a week. I understand about the sweet potato casserole though! Yummy dessert goodness! But not every week item. I also had a chow. She had been abused as a puppy and never was sociable. She was okay with women but hated little boys. The boys were the only ones she ever snapped at. Most people she would inspect, but if reached for would run away.
Time to head to bed. Will read more in the morning!
Welcome to the new ladies!
Keep the stories flowing!
Hugs to all!

That is what I do too. Immediately stand up, and place my foot flat on the ground. Hurts like the devil, but it is the only thing that gets it over quickly for me. To be fair, I have never tried quinine.

I’ve never heard of using tonic water for muscle cramps ... how do you use this ..
A stupid question ... but are you drinking it fast ? How does it help in seconds?

I recently read a quote regarding their weight loss challenge (can't remember who wrote it) and it said "Wake up each day with DETERMINATION and go to sleep with SATISFACTION". This will be my motto for 2019 and I'm hoping I can also receive lots of member's support to help me along this journey!8

Hi all!
My day begins. I was awake quite a bit of the night worrying about feeding my brother. Ridiculous!
I'm looking forward to running today with my DSIL, though my legs feel knackered after all the walking yesterday.
I run really slowly. It is a shuffle as I stay close to the ground. If you imagine a clockwork toy that goes 'tick, tick, tick, ' - that’s me, just puttering along - little steps. Everyone overtakes me. But it's still a wonderful feeling to be doing it at my age.
Now to take DH up his cup of tea.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx6 -
My grandmother passed away last night. She was 97 years old and lived a life full of love. She loved her Lord Jesus, her family, and many others she met. She was always very welcoming.
She served with her husband in several pastorates for over 40 years. She taught herself to play the piano and organ and led a choir. She also taught Sunday School for well over 40 years and in later years she held a Bible study for seniors.
She was a busy woman, an avid gardener, cook, and baker. She worked in a flower shop for many years in Alberta, and spent some time in summers for several years picking raspberries in lower mainland BC, often with me.
She was energetic and healthy ... walked a lot, gardened (as mentioned above), ate a reasonably healthy diet, didn't smoke, didn't drink alcohol. My grandfather enjoyed mountain climbing in the Canadian Rockies, and she joined him on some of the hikes ... those with paths.
This is her ...

Yes, he went a good 20 years before her. She was 20 years younger than him, but she always loved him and wore her wedding ring. I think they're together again.

Cariwadickc: & Felicia: When I have leg cramps at night I take a couple of TUMS and found that they are quite helpful. It might be worth a try for you. I also stand up and put my feet flat on the floor until the cramp eases. If it comes back I stand up again. :flowerforyou:
Janetr: Your granddaughter is a very pretty girl. I think she must take after you.
Machka: I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved grandmother. I see a resemblance between the two of you in your photo, especially your smiles.
PS: I’m up in the middle of the night right now because I had foot cramps tonight. I have taken some TUMS. I’m sitting up with my feet flat on the floor as I type to you.

Machka - I'm so sorry for your loss. I too see a dramatic resemblance between you and your grandmother. My own resemblance to my mother in the mirror gives me that sense of the continuance of her life into the next generation, and it helps when I'm missing her most.
JanetR - Your granddaughter's lovely. Is the "thing" she's referring to in the bar across the picture the nose ring? She's kinda rockin' it.
Leg cramps for me always seem about hydration, and walking is all that seems to help. They come and go, and have pulled me right up out of bed on occasion.
Interesting first day back from winter break, trying to gather enough information to get a final grant report out that I wasn't aware until Weds. night was due today. Still haven't got what I need, hoping to get it all together this morning. There are usually very few grant-writing emergencies... and there will be fewer and fewer as I step into the process more fully. Note - no one's blaming me, but I still don't like the scramble, and will be doing what's necessary to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Had a very good day, eating-wise. Oat bran with almond milk about 11:30 a.m., taco meat with fat-free cottage cheese at 2 p.m., sugar-free Jell-O at about 4 for a snack, a bleu cheese bacon burger (no bun) at 6 p.m., and no snacking after. Because of your IF posts, was actually paying attention yesterday to when, as well as what, I was eating. We'll see if a few successful days can get the scale moving in the right direction again. Could use a few successes on that side.
Love y'all,

Lisa I sure like the way Melinda gates defines grace as "pulling us up out of ourselves and onto a higher plane, it makes us more open to the world, to new experiences, to each other. It creates connections and encourages empathy." Thanks for the link!
Beth how DID the clean sink and counter metamorphose over night? Good idea to ask the DH and Son, they might have a clue...
Penny "...tree roots not so much..." LOL!
Lanette thanks for showing how lots of variety in fruits, veggies and legumes can add up to your astounding fiber total... not to mention all those micronutrients. Hmm, let me see how I can add some beans and more veggies...
Pip "boring?" No way, you are a PISTOL!
Rebecca if you both could be in the shower, I can imagine not much cleansing would get done ...
Felicia SERIOUSLY cute pooch! Safe travels.
Yvonne, not just chows... Tumble, our Skye Terrier, is very suspicious of anything that moves, anything new. So far no snapping but barking, growling and lunging, especially at other dogs, but even at weeds moving in the wind. Then she'll stealthily sneak closer... and if "it" moves again, startlejump and bark like the dickens. Her looks attracts friendly strangers so I have gotten quick on the "Please don't pet her, she'll bark and lunge."
SueBDew too bad that really cute visitor can't lend a paw with the cleanup...
Bonnie "...didn't make me thin or minty" LOL!
Barbie,Machka, Pip, Penny and Heather your daily exercise routines are truly inspiring! Lanette my step goals are in the 4-5K range but too many days I only achieve 2-3K.
Welcome Dauchsmom, nicoleadams8, Desiree !
