Just a quick note on a drive-by reading, on the intermittent fasting, it's not deliberate on my part, as I'm largely trying to stick to high protein, low-fat and as few carbs as possible, other than eating oat bran for breakfast. I notice, however, that I do much better overall if I wait to eat my oat bran at 11 a.m. or later. Which, since I seldom eat anything after 7 p.m. because we're in bed by 9, and I have a hard time digesting anything laying down, that I'm on about a 16-hour fast. Again, not deliberate, but they are my most successful days. I do find that the day AFTER I do that, I'm quite hungry in the morning. If I'm working, easy to ignore, but the days I don't work, I tend to struggle with my eating anyway.
Also, this doesn't cause issues with my gall bladder, as it was evicted a couple years after the gastric bypass. Pretty typical pattern for most GBS patients, and many surgeons now just take out the gall bladder when they do the GBS, as it almost invariably develops issues after if they don't.
Later, y'all,

For the last 9 mos. he would not come to any family functions or even meet us for dinner out. He did let us pick him up the week before Christmas and take him to a steak house near his home. During dinner, my husband asked him where he grocery shopped and mentioned he could get better deals at a different store. This was just to make conversation as we were all discussing the fact that most of the things he needs are really close by. Now he is emailing my husband, me, and my husband's brother and his wife wanting to know why we all keep asking him why he is shopping at this store. I have never in my life called him and I doubt if my husband's brother would think to ask him such a thing. This is the second email we have gotten about this since we took him out to dinner. What we are really worried about is the fact that we don't have any information about who to contact if anything happens to him. We have asked for this information and he just says it is all on his computer....which is probably pass word protected. It is my idea that he is probably showing signs of dementia and I don't have any idea how we can help him if it get worse (which if it is that, he will get worse). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Also, my husband has been the one who he always calls if he needs to go to the hospital or if there is any problem.

A thought - if he has a special friend or pastor or neighbor, see if you can figure out who that is if something happens and he's not willing to divulge more right now - he might have shared information with them.
Rori mentioned this website: agingcare.com and I signed up for it. There's a lot of great sharing and information on not just dementia, but all kinds of things caregivers run into. You might sign up for it and post your question there.
You and your DH are sweet to have thought of him over Christmas and to be concerned for his welfare.

PS - another thought here. You might contact your local Area Agency on Aging and see if they can point you in a good direction.

hidee ho ladies~well the nap never happened, go a severe leg cramp..
@grandmallie, I get these so bad I cry!! I haven't had one in a while and think it's because I've cut out diet coke/coke zero and I'm drinking more water. I take magnesium and vitamin d because a nurse friend told me that should help. I always have diet tonic water with quinine around the house. I had one really bad about a month ago and could not even move with crying, it hurt so bad. Usually, with the tonic water, it is gone in just a few seconds.4 -
Here is the link for the web series: http://therealskinnyonfat.com/optin/
You do have to provide your email address to gain access.
The hosts of the series, Montel Williams and Naomi Whittel are scheduled to appear on the Dr. Oz show tomorrow. They will probably promote the series.
Those embarking on the keto diet should be aware that there are a ton of food products that are being labeled keto. These are highly processed foods where the manufacturer is adding fiber to reduce the net carb count. I adhere to clean keto which means I review the ingredients of any food to avoid added sugar. Sugar free processed foods have a ton of undesirable ingredients. Whole food is best.
I am not an early bird. I think the thing I enjoy most about retirement is never having to set an alarm. I am in bed between 10 and 10:30 and usually awake around 7:30 - 8:00. By the time I walk and shower it is close to 10.
I had someone into look at my dishwasher for the second time. I have Kitchenaid dishwasher drawers. I only use the top one. The problem has been that the both drawers go crazy, the light is red instead of green and the motor is running but no water runs. It is so loud, the first time it happened it woke me up in the middle of the night. My handyman looked at it just before Christmas and it worked for 1 1/2 weeks and then it happened again. I turned the circuit breaker off until it could be looked at. Today the handyman brought 2 men with more appliance experience. The problem was the electric control panel was getting wet and short circuiting. They couldn’t locate a leak, but I heard them comment about suds under the bottom drawer. When I started thinking back, the problem started when I ran out of dishwasher detergent and bought the Kirkland brand at Costco. Turns out I bought dishwashing liquid instead of dishwasher liquid. Total user error, I was so embarrassed. The good news is that once it dries out it will be fine and the handyman didn’t charge me for the return service call. I will still have to hand wash dishes until I go buy new detergent.

Penny & Pip: What are the chances that the two of you are actually sisters? Seems plausible. At the very least, you seem to be sisters of the heart.
Carol in GA: It sounds as though you have a serious worry regarding your DBIL. Good luck to you & your DH. Is he close enough to drop in on him a couple of times a week? Do you think he needs to be in an assisted living facility?
Clowe1028: Thanks for posting the link to the real skinny on fat. I watched this series before and would love to see it again.
Cathy in Arlington: We’re waiting for delivery of a new Whirlpool dishwasher. The first one arrived with a sharp crease in the door and was sent back without ever coming into our house. Hopefully the replacement will be here in the very near future. Our old dishwasher is barely limping along. :ohwell:
Are any of you watching the Outlander Series on Starz? I bought the books as they came out and have read them all, some of them more than once. I am so impressed with the TV production. They’ve done a stellar job so far.

I’ll take it, I hope she younger. I am the youngest in our family of 7, being the baby sucks!1 -
Hi all,
We had a lovely day with my brother and DSIL. Absolutely LOADS of walking! That's on top of my morning exercises!
It turns out that he has just started a low carb diet and they are both dry for January. Luckily I had stocked up with low carb snacks and cheese, so managed to find him a late lunch and a snack for later. He is an insulin injecting type 2 diabetic with eye problems, so he is really trying to get a grip on his blood sugar.
We went out to the Italian fish place for dinner and he had plain grilled fish with veg. I had octopus and clams in an onion sauce. Yum!
I hope to go running with my DSIL tomorrow morning as the forecast is sunny. I will make him scrambled eggs for breakfast.
All good.
A cold night is expected tonight. Brrrrrr!

Carol can you contact his doctor with your concerns or neighbors. There is social services but that adds another layer to the problem. It is a delicate problem. I like Lanette's advice too!1

I try to remember to shake out my legs during the day especially after sitting or standing too long. I also rub Epson salts into my legs during my bath. If I still get them I rub with Arnica oil and that usually takes care of them.3 -

Leg cramps up your magnesium intake. Also pickle juice helps. When I am training for a marathon I do that and something else. When I have another minute I’ll post1

Thank you to the runners and cyclists giving me tips. I still haven't been out to enjoy my new bicycle, since it was raining again today. Going slow for the running sounds like great advice. I read about a marathoner who, in spite of being much older than his competition, still beat them in a days long marathon. He wasn't faster; he went along at a slow shuffle, and they laughed at him. But like the tortoise to the hare, he had the last laugh. He didn't sleep, so when they were taking their rest, he shuffled past their distances. He sort of zoned out and kept on going. My faulty memory keeps me from remembering the specifics. Ah, found it! https://elitefeet.com/the-legend-of-cliff-young
I get leg cramps too, and have for most of my life. When I get them, I immediately get my foot flat on the floor as soon as I can move without screaming. My toes are always pointed when these cramps hit, and snapping my foot to a 45 degree angle stops it. If I can't do it quickly, the cramp lingers, and I do some hamstring stretches. I had a friend who insisted putting a bar of regular soap in your bed will stop the cramps--no idea why.

Here are two of my happiness commandments:
What's fun for me may not be fun for others and vice versa.
You can choose what you do, but you can't choose what you like.
I eat five small meals a day--the first before six AM and the last about 6 PM and go to bed at 7:30 PM.
I eat a lot of the same food every day and spend as little time as possible preparing food.
I've tried riding a bike and running and don't like either one, but I walk for hours a day and ride a recumbent exercise bike while watching TV most afternoons. Also I go to two line dance classes a week.
I wear similar clothes every day and shop for new clothes only to replace something that has to be thrown out.
That's what is so special about this thread. We are all heading for similar goals and have so many different routes for getting there. We are respectful of each other and embrace each other's unique paths.

that bar of soap thing works for me, I don't know why. but have one there all the time. and it stops them for me too5 -
Did an advanced strength DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do a Bosu DVD.
More Newcomer website stuff: Adra just sent me some more applications, which she’s done in the past. For some reason, she also sent them to Greg. I guess we shall see in a few days if he enters them or not. Vince thinks she sent them to him so that he can “activate” them. It should be interesting, I don’t know how you can activate someone who isn’t on the directory! You know, I know that Greg doesn’t want to work with me, but I really thought Adra did. Maybe I’m wrong. Guess I’ll just give it some time and just keep doing what I’ve been doing. Wish I could find someone who was a REAL web designer. The problem is that the group doesn’t want to pay any money. Personally, I think they should make the investment, if anything so that the gal who is (supposedly) going to be the webmaster will have someone who knows what they’re doing and talking about to ask a question of.
I like to prelog my meals. There have been times when I think I’m under calories but when I prelog I find out that I’m really not and can sometimes eliminate something so that I am under calories.
Welcome everyone new!
I really like interval workouts, too. Sometimes I’ll do them on the elliptical and sometimes on the treadmill. Mostly on the elliptical just because that’s much easier on the knees. But sometimes I do do them on the treadmill. That’s probably the kind of exercise that I’ll do when I go up to help Denise.
CSSJ – welcome back! I’m sorry, I don’t remember your name. A one year shopping ban???? I don’t know if I could ever do something like that.
Denise called. It looks like a boy. She was very excited to find out the sex. Personally, and I told her, to me it wouldn’t make a difference if it was a girl or a boy or an alien. As long as it was healthy.
After the Green Room stopped and got gas then bought chicken thighs to make this weekend. I probably should make something for the gal at the Y who lets me go in for free. I know she likes ginger. I’ve made her ginger cookies, muffins, breads, cake. Does anyone have a recipe for something else?
Newcomer bowling tonight
Jess comes home tomorrow and then flies to St. Kitts Sat. She’s evidently going to bring Shadow here but she asked if we could meet Colby ½ way to give him Shadow when we go to FL. She feels (and she’s right) that the condo is just too small for 5 cats. Really, it’s pretty small for 4, but at least they all get along. In a way, I’m a bit concerned about all the changes Shadow is being put thru. First Jess goes to St. Kitts, Shadow is with Colby, then she’s down here, now she’s back up in VA (well, I can understand Jess wanting her cat with her), back here, back to VA, and I don’t know if back here or not. Well, I really don’t have a say in what she does with her cat.
Tracey – I’m negative, too and had to get the Rogan. Happy birthday to your gd
Vince has been working on organizing the Christmas decorations
Yvonne – hope you win! Good idea to start getting prepared for your trip
