I was on a Facebook group for the 2019 Run the Year program and someone asked advice for working out with broken ribs. Another person chimed in claiming to be a PT and told her to eat clean (specifically no sugar) and drink bone broth. What is the worst advice you have seen from individuals claiming to have a medical background?

Did the PT call their training a medical background? Because that's a whole impersonating a doctor thing.

Physical therapist or personal trainer?14

after a person coughs they HAVE to spit it out because it will go back into the lungs. omg. it goes into the stomach,. swallowing 101 - this particular woman runs around given unsolicited advice (old wifes tales) (on everything) to everyone .....and no one has even asked for it. I IGNORE HER AND HER RUNNING MOUTH.

Good question. I didn't ask. @MelanieCN77 She didn't make medical claims but answered "As a PT"...which made it sound like she was speaking as an expert.0 -
That my sister in law was stupid to have chemo for her breast cancer and that all she needed was some Reiki healing because that cures cancer.
This guy was supposedly trained in Reiki (which I have no problem with if it makes you "feel" better/relaxed) but telling me my SIL was stupid to be having Chemo that was not acceptable.
I restrained myself from punching him in the throat...barely.
My SIL recovered and is in remission and long may it stay that way.96 -
It pops up on Twitter fairly often these days that keto cures cancer. Sometimes even from people claiming to be doctors.
That one pretty much takes the cake.32 -
My friend once told me I shouldn't eat fruit after my lunch as it 'fights' with the other food in my stomach instead of digesting....
We don't often talk about diet or nutrition any more! :laugh:32 -

Just drink 32 oz of water and drown them all. Just play some music so no one hears the cries for help.48 -
And if you chase it with a shot of ACV, they will burn while drowning!25

That's just silly. The ACV will detoxify your liver and prevent kidney stones from forming (because they can't exist in an acidic environment) but there is no proof that it will burn fruit. Now the magic elyxr of lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne and honey (but only locally sourced raw honey)...that will burn just about anything.22 -

Speaking as a cancer survivor, my handy rule of thumb is this: Nothing cures cancer, at least not most types of it.
I have had . . . hmmm . . . 5 or 6 oncologists by now, and heard numerous others speak at events. "Cure" is not a word oncologists generally use (maybe in contexts like "hope one day we may have a cure").
"Remission" "removed tumors" "no evidence of disease (NED)" "risk returned to general population level" . . . sure. "Cure"? Not so much.
So, anyone says something "cures" cancer, I figure they're not an oncologist, and ignore 'em.
I don't really think of them as medical, but the stupidest thing I've ever heard a pseudo-medical person (chiropractor) say was something along the lines that we'd all be better off if we gave up all dairy, sugar, and gluten . . . and artificial sweeteners are just as bad as sugar because they trick our body (into releasing insulin or something, I forget); but honey is OK, because it's a superfood; and agave isn't a superfood, but it's OK because it at least is a whole food. There was more, equally dumb.
And you know who he told this bull-whatsis to? A breast cancer support group. SMH.39 -

First, congratulations on surviving that *kitten*. Second, I truly think I would have stood up and walked out of that meeting. Then, went and had a big ole full-fat gluteny sugar cone bowl of ice cream topped with caramel made with artificial sweetener.14 -

Ironically, cookies were served at the meeting, alongside the nonsense. From what I could see, most meeting participants partook freely of both. Chiro-boy seemed to be making a favorable impression. (He was young and sleazy-charming, which probably helped.)
He was clearly drumming up business. He described a dietary intervention his practice focuses on, but only in vague terms; when someone asked a question that would yield an actionable answer, he'd suggest they write it on their question form with their contact information, and he'd get back to them. Low. Slime-ball low.
I stayed and kept my mouth shut, but feedback to the support group coordinator is on my to-do list. She's a nurse. The sponsoring cancer center has a oncology-specialized registered dietician. It was inexcusable.20 -
"You don't have to count calories if you eat clean! You'll lose weight natural!"
I stupidly believed this. And guess what.... I gained weight. Funny how that happens.28 -
As a cancer survivor myself, I'm very discouraged when I see people who believe in "cures". I know someone who has had brain cancer twice, and she is now so against big pharma that if she gets it again, she is only going to smoke pot or use CBD oil this time. She is convinced that's all she needs to be cured.16

CBD oil in all it's forms seems to be the big thing right now when it comes to cures. The claims are just jaw-dropping and unfortunately sweep up vulnerable people like your friend. It's dispicable. And I'm saying this as a person who uses a CBD cream for mild athritis in my hands. It has it's uses, but claiming it's a cure for anything is predatory, in my opinion.

I have a friend who recently tried to treat his throat cancer with marijuana instead of chemo. Thank goodness people talked him into the actual medical route before it was too late. As of now, anyway.6 -
Bump. I love diet woo threads. Especially when it comes to keto.
Oh no I didn't.12 -
This woman is disgusting, worse than the fact that she took heaps of money from people is that people believed her BS and stopped medically prescribed treatment and started eating her recommended diet.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-09-28/disgraced-wellness-blogger-belle-gibson-fined/8995500
She did an interview on 60 mins here and still never admitted that she never had a brain tumour or that she is a giant liar.
If people want to peddle kooky stuff that is expensive but harmless, that's one thing but if it actually causes harm that is something else altogether.
It should be a lesson for everyone, what these people are like but vulnerable people will believe anything.13 -
