Hello,
Once again I am optimistically hoping MFP groups can work. Us MFP daily loggers, who run and use a Garmin, this is for us:

A few of them are still vivid in my mind because it was so bad. It was like those moments when you go to pass a car and they realize it and start to speed up. It's almost as if they can't stand someone running past them. I don't think these are people following a run/walk plan. I can usually pick those out. They usually will look, move over and slow down, making sure they aren't in front of someone. When I've gotten into these passing matches with the rude people I just pick up my pace for a while to get myself far enough ahead of them.
Kids doing it don't bother me. They haven't learned pacing yet. I'm pretty sure 90% of kids run races this way.
At my trail race last weekend, I was probably a bit too close to one lady at the start. I didn't want to go out to fast and she had a good pace. I did eventually pass her but not until a point I was ready. Then later I had someone hang behind me. It didn't bother me because it seems to happen more on trails. People use others to pace plus sometimes it's a single track and even though you try to stay to right there isn't always room to pass.
I've not had too much bother with run-walkers, the only time it's an obvious problem is at drinks stops where people run in, grab a drink, then stop dead. Just move out of the way people. Literally three more steps back out from the table.
I have a bigger issue with being used as a pacer/windbreak. I don't mind it for a few kilometres, or even for the whole race as long as you don't do what a 'friend' of my used to do - sit on my shoulder for the entire 10k race and then kick off and pass me with less than 100m to go. She could sprint, I can't. She'd beat me by 2-3 seconds every single time. Used to piss me off no end. She would laugh. Didn't get that it bothered me. Would joke about drafting and sprinting and the fact she beat me.
I got tired of it after the third or fourth time. By the 10th race I was livid. I tried all sorts of tricks to get her to stop it - starting at the back of the pack, at the front of the pack, trying to lose her in the pack, starting fast, starting slow, telling her it's not the done thing. Nothing worked, she'd find me and run half a pace behind me. I didn't mind being beaten by her, but it felt like she ran my race, not hers. She is younger and a naturally better runner than me. If she'd run her own race she probably would have beaten me by 2-3 minutes and I would have been perfectly happy with that.
Fortunately for me, and unfortunately for her, she is injured and doesn't run anymore.
*rant over*
That is definitely not what I was doing. She just happened to be running the pace I wanted to. I try not to get to close but obviously, when she slowed down I kinda caught up to her. I passed her maybe at mile 1, if not before. And I never saw her again.
What you were doing is perfectly ok. I often ‘chase a person’, especially if it’s near the end of the race and I feel I’m flagging. And I will pass them if I can at the end, absolutely. But I wouldn’t draft off someone for an entire race then sprint past them at the end and then expect them to give me a ride home.
This is exactly what @MobyCarp would do during races... picking off people to catch up to and pass. I think it can be very motivating to 'chase' a runner in front of you and be able to catch and pass them.
Also on kids in races. I had an experience in a large race where a track team (14-16 yos) was running. They 'ran' in clumps and by run I mean a bit in groups of 5-6 and then stop and laugh and talk. They never moved out of the way. They definitely could run and had speed to pass others but would get in front of other runners and do this. Apparently their coaches and/or other adult runners never taught them any running etiquette. I finally got so frustrated with them I stopped and told them, trying to be nice, that if they wanted to do this to move over, stay over and let other runners get by them. I also asked one of the groups to point out their adult runner/coach and I told that person, not so nicely, that while it was great that the team was there, they as the adult needed to supervise and ensure the kids weren't interfering with other people who really wanted to run and couldn't get around them.

@Lazy_Bones_85 - like @polskagirl01, I do the copy paste from page to page. There are also some usernames I can remember from using them so often or I can pick them off the list that MFP provides.
@RunsOnEspresso - I am sad about Shalane retiring but not completely surprised.
@girlinahat - hope you aren't out on the injury list for too long!
@mbaker566 - love that you and speed demon had a race together! The pictures are awesome, especially the mid-run mud bath
@rheddmobile - That is so scary! I thought of you when I saw the reports of the tornado in Memphis. So glad you are ok. I hope all our running friends in the Dallas area are all ok too.
I was not able to get my planned long run in over the weekend so had planned to run it today. Unfortunately dh needed me to take him to an eye appointment this morning. So instead I got up and out early enough to get in just under 4 miles of tempo running before we had to leave for the appointment. I also decided to go check out a trail near the doctor's office rather than sit around in the waiting room. I am so glad I did. I got another 1.3 miles on a lovely trail that I will definitely be going back to with Hobbes the Vizsla when he can run again. My plan right now is to try and get a long run in on Wednesday but it will somewhat depend on the weather. It was well over 90F again today with hot, dry winds and is supposed to get worse as the week goes on.
Our daughter is coming down this weekend for a wedding so I have to get my weekend long run in on Saturday before she arrives. If not it will get pushed off again to next Wednesday.

@ContraryMaryMary Sounds like your "friend" had issues. Insecurity or jealousy perhaps? She wasn't able or confident enough to come up with her own race plan, and seemed to have something to prove by beating you every time. Perhaps there are good times to just suddenly stop in the middle of the race!
I once had someone on my heels who was doing this weird throat clearing thing and it was breaking my concentration. Right on my back but she wasn't passing me. Finally I jumped off the path and stopped, and since she had no warning, she had no choice but to pass me, and I jumped right back in behind her (just not too close and not for long, because she really was faster). I'm guessing your friend would've just come back behind you though. You'd probably have been justified for yelling at her, or just flat out telling her that she needs to run her own race, or the riding together stops. Once or twice is one thing, but every race doing the same thing after being told to stop it? Rude.5 -
I should confess @ContraryMaryMary that I do use people as windbreaks. At my weight you need all the help you can get though it also means I don't sprint.2

i do too for a good part of races. no drafting or shadowing but i do pick a person i think i can catch. then i pick a new person. sometimes i do have strangers pace me but i try not to be too close. i like my personal space and assume others do too
i do think @MobyCarp was the one who suggested it.
@shanaber the canicross season is starting. we have another one in dec3 -
Oh goody. The president will be in town tomorrow. That means road closures and protests all right in the first mile or 2 of my run. Yay me.8
-
Over 7 miles for Kody & I last night. 3 miles of that was a set of four hill repeats. 2.2 miles from home to the base of the hill which is 0.4 miles to the top at an average grade of 5%. We ran up and down four times before heading back home. We didn't sprint, just kept up a steady pace, both up and down.
I finally remembered to break out Kody's Noxgear Light Hound LED harness.
We almost got hit in the busy intersection near home. Same story as always. A vehicle coming from the opposite direction turning left in front of me. In spite of having the WALK signal, in spite of Kody all lit up, in spite of me pointing my strong headlamp beam directly into her windshield when it became apparent that she wasn't slowing down, she kept on going, cutting through just a couple of feet in front of me. I may have raised my voice and I may have dropped an effenheimer or two. She's just lucky that in the moment I forgot that I was carrying a full dog poop bag and could have easily hit the side of her fan with it with such force that it split open on the window. Missed opportunity, but next time I'll be ready.
That puts me over 100 miles for the month and still on target for my 150 mile goal.

I had a wonderful 6.4 mile run this morning. It was cold (for me) at 40°F this morning. But it was clear and it was not windy so it was really nice. I wore capris and a t-shirt with sleeves and gloves. I was pretty comfortable for the run. My hands were kind of cold, but they always are and the gloves did help some. I felt so good running today. My goal was not to worry about my pace, but just to run and I ended up with mostly negative splits. Mile 5 was faster than mile 6, but other than that I sped up a little each mile. But really had a pretty consistent pace throughout without really trying. I felt pretty speedy, but the effort felt easy. It was clear and there were lots of stars out. I just felt good the whole time. I felt like I could run forever and I probably would have gone further if I didn't have to go to work.

That's a good reminder to remind folks here that we also have a group:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/21182-monthly-running-challenges
This may be in the initial post of the month...I don't know, I never read that and if it is in there, it's probably hidden by the other good info.1 -
We recently discussed running form, cadence and foot strike. Here's a thread with a lot of links to great info and videos on building good form.

You silly runners. Running to and fro... 😄 (Just wanted to say "hi"). I'm still waiting to heal and "move forward".
Not running related (obviously); I got into nursing school (BSN). I'm stoked- sort of. Not sure how I'm going to manage my life for the next 2.5 years and if my hips are going to be ongoing issues. I'm gonna be like @workaholic_nurse someday. Haha!
Any other medical professionals/nurses? I know @HonuNui ... any words of wisdom?23 -

Thanks for posting this. I'm gonna go through the videos and drills bit by bit and try to digest it all.
@Elise4270 Congratulations!!!!1 -
That gal I paced last Saturday...it turns out she dropped out about 4 miles after we split up. So sad, but she was tough in doing what she had done. No shame there at all.
And from the "WTF!?!?" department, one of the runners who did complete the 100 mile race in our humble woods, is on a quest to run a 100 miler every week. EVERY WEEK. He completed his race last Saturday which marked his FORTY SEVENTH week in a row completing a 100 miler. WTF?!?!

Persevere. The middle year sux but its a blast at the end! Well that was radiography anyway lol.
Oh and study buddies are a must. Having others going through the same thing who can help makes it so much easier. I'm still friends with some of my study mates 7 years later.
Enjoy it! And congratulations!!2 -

Ummmm... how do you dress to run 2.3 miles in overcast, drizzly, 45F but feels like 7F because of a wind advisory? I can't remember the last time I saw a gap that big! I really want to run, but I also have the car (so I could drive to the gym instead of running) and maybe I should take a pass since the weather's going to be nicer pretty much every day this week...3

A good wind breaker is a must. With good wind blockage, you will think you are running in something much closer to air temp.2 -

Great job on your trail race with Speed Demon @mbaker566!
Congrats on getting into nursing school - that's fantastic @Elise4270!
Thank you @Scott6255, @polskagirl01, @7lenny7 and @rheddmobile and anyone I missed who liked or commented on my races! I'm enjoying some non-running recovery time and finding it weird not to have that "big event" in front of me anymore. Of course I have two Spartan races and another half in November, so not too much time to let myself go
Re: the conversation about etiquette while racing - we had a guy come up right behind us in the Des Moines race while I was chit-chatting with my two friends as we ran. It was pretty narrow at that spot because the lead runners were starting to come back on the other side on basically a wide bike path, so I moved over and apologized for blocking him and he said oh no, I'm not trying to pass and he stayed right there. I thought well then you're getting a little close buddy, so I made a joke about him drafting off us - but I think he was kind of! I found it funny because this was the race I was just out to finish so we were certainly not blazing a path. It was a little strange.
I tend to get frustrated by run/walkers only if they stop in my way, but usually, they seem careful to raise a hand and move over. It does mildly mess with my head that they can finish faster than me and still walk part of it, but that's my problem

5 miles today - my FIL is still not in, he apparently got lost in Birmingham and delayed by several hours. My husband wants to know how this is possible in the age of GPS. All I know is Memphis shuts down at 9 pm so if they aren’t here soon they aren’t going out to dinner as they planned.
Beautiful running weather as expected, although with a very high wind. We kept thinking we were running faster than we were, because the wind in our faces made us feel like we were going 25 mph!7 -

Congratulations @Elise4270 :Agree with @Avidkeo about study buddies, but what I found invaluable was our note service. One designated note-taker per class, who then transcribes and distributes them to the note-service members (in my day that meant typing and xeroxing!) The note-takers always got something that I missed while in the same lecture....and usually something that was on the exam.
Upcoming races:
Revel Kulia Half Marathon 1/18/20
Ticker is my goal for 2019 and progress to date:

Beautiful running weather as expected, although with a very high wind. We kept thinking we were running faster than we were, because the wind in our faces made us feel like we were going 25 mph!
I sort of got lost a couple of weeks ago even using GPS while trying to get out of the cornfields of south-central Minnesota and back to the Twin Cities - I was going in the right direction, but got sent down some random unpaved roads that ended up adding 20-25 minutes to our trip. And all that because I turned the wrong way out of the only gas station in the wee tiny town we'd been visiting. Whoops.0
