Good morning all! Happy Thursday! It has been a busy week. I have had an interview or training every evening after my kiddos have gotten picked up, tonight is the last one for a couple of weeks. Potty Boot Camp is going well. The first day was crazy with more accidents than "deposits" in the toilet. But yesterday, we made it through the day with only one accident per child. The rest of the day they made it to the bathroom on time! Yea! If the girls are successful with the training (which it looks like they will be) that means about 10 less diapers a day for me to change! Whoot!
SuziQ- You are a stunner! It always amazes me how such obv lovely women, don't like how they look in pictures. I am not sure why, as I can count myself in that group, as well. Your comment to Rebecca in regards to your hair are very similar to my own. Long hair most of my life, have gone as short as chin length but thinking about going shorter, now and I have ALWAYS dreamed of shaving my head. Wouldn't it be fun to shave it, then let an artist paint a very cool design on it? For extra money, you could rent your head for advertising space! lol
Tina CA- I took French, Spanish, and German classes in school; but as an adult I have used Duolingo to "freshen" them up. I find that my comprehension is a lot better than my ability to speak each language. Most likely because I don't get the chance to converse in each language. regularly.
Ooops, distracted by hubby needing a hand getting moving. Kids arriving soon. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

Morning, all...
Allie - So proud of you for taking on the Machu Picchu trip. Be sure to take lots of pictures!
Rori - I had hoped your brother would be your support, not as much the other way around. As someone who has been in the job market a lot over the years, encouraging him to keep applying to other companies might be helpful--I hate it when companies string you along! So glad the VA is treating you and your husband well. Many scratches for your travel itch, and all kinds of hugs for you and the men you love, all the way to Mars.
Karen in VA - holy crap on a cracker for your grandson. So scary when the words "concussion," and "hematoma" get thrown around all willy-nilly. And a quick edit - so glad to hear good news for Josephine, and thank you for continuing to share those!
Rebecca - couldn't be more pleased that you're back in touch with your youngest. They don't know how much they mean to us--how could they? He will know once he has his own... and speaking of that, Athena is SO beautiful... and the person taking the photos truly understands how to take great pictures.
SuziQ - you look amazing in your selfies, and if I looked like you, I'd take a lot of them. I do not. No selfies for me.
On the licorice and split pea soup groups... both are a big "nope" from me. Always threw away the black jelly beans, and split pea soup always looks... predigested. Ish. But then, I don't like soup. Funnily enough, the very first time Corey cooked for me, when we were dating, he made me hamburger soup. I fished the hamburger bits out of it and ate them, and told him I wasn't very hungry.
Speaking of which, collapsed in my chair last night almost as soon as Corey got home, got him to throw a couple blankets over me, and snoozed there most of the evening, then went to bed - Nearly 10 hours sleep and no dinner. When I was a child, it would have been punishment. Last night it was just what I needed. Adulting really is kinda stupid.
Unfortunately, it's possible I may be anemic again, but I'll know tomorrow when I talk to the doc. I've been taking iron for months, but not sure it's working, and my old Crohns-type symptoms are back. Something's not working, and I am really tired of this, I've dealt with it all year. There - now my pity party's over, I'm going to go back to work.
And speaking of work, sent out letters of interest on more than half a million in grants this week spread across a number of possible funders, fingers crossed some of them bite... found out we did not move on in the $100 million grant competition, but then, it was always a long-shot. *sigh* I just keep sending them out...
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR

Thank you ... sometimes I feel like I'm not accomplishing anything, just spinning my wheels.
This week has been a wheel-spinning week!
Got to work on Monday, first day after the holiday, got a bunch of documents ready to submit to one of the organisations I do submissions to ... start to submit them, when I got an email. Something had caused their system to crash. I don't think it was my file, but it crashed trying to process my file. So I've got all my files ready to go, but can't submit yet. And I've written most of an instruction manual for that process. But it would have been nicer to be able to tell my supervisor that I had finished the submission.
And at home ... I'm still not fully unpacked and I'm half done several other jobs. Tonight I was trying and trying to do one of the jobs on my list but just couldn't work it out. Still haven't. But I've done some of the prep work.
Oh well, it's the first week of the new year. There's time.

Languages - What are you all using or have you used to learn a foreign language? I need to get on my goal to learn some Spanish.
Tina in CA
I started using Duolingo in January 2018 for about 10 minutes per day. I'm now studying Spanish with Duolingo up to an hour each day. Really increased my ability to read the language, understand if someone is speaking slowly, vocabulary, grammar and some speaking ability. I like Duolingo on the computer more than on my smart phone since it is not a game losing hearts when I mess up and all the advertising. It is FREE ... you do not need to buy it.
I've also listened to a number of podcasts all FREE:
* NIS - Notes in Spanish beginners, intermediate, advanced
* Coffee Break Spanish
Website: News in SLOW Spanish which has current news reports that you can read as they read them out loud. However, this one does have a fee if you want to use it on a regular basis.
I receive a new vocabulary word in my email daily https://www.spanishdict.com/wordoftheday

Machka love the new neurons poster and especially the Future You one.

LMAO! But, what a great second income stream! I could rent my head out at events!! I seriously love the idea.1 -
Heather Grandson had breakfast but I think he had only a sip of water so that may be a factor. SuziQ - I had to chuckle at your banana suggestion because I totally ruined him for bananas when he was small. He used to love bananas until I gave him a piece of banana not realizing his tummy was getting upset from a stomach virus. He at the banana just before he got sick. He can't stand the sight or smell of bananas since.2

Taking tomorrow (Friday) off.
My husband and I are getting our shingles vaxes. Yay. I've been warned there's a chance we might not feel brilliant after so I thought I'd just take the day off.
Plus if you read my post above, I'm not getting much done at work this week anyway!
If I'm not feeling too bad after the shingles vax, I'm hoping I can finally get on top of a few things around home.
I've had a bad headache all afternoon/evening, but I just checked Windy and I see that there's a pressure change right overhead. And a wind from the east (that's odd) is colliding with a wind from the west (normal) above Tassie. That might account for it.
My husband took down the lights from the tree outside and the window lights today. That's OK. Australia isn't big on Christmas lights and I think we were the only people around here with them, so it's probably time for them to come down. But the inside decorations are still here.
And I've stuck to my calorie limit for 4 days in a row! Woo-Hoo!!
Machka in Oz5 -
I love black licorice. Just not the salted variety.
Lisa Dang it about the anemia. If you end up having to take iron supplements, which I seem to recall you do not care for, there are a couple of OTC versions that aren't too bad. If you take Vit C with them it enhances absorption. SloFe (slow release) or FeoSol (if constipation is an issue but I think I remember it isn't). I hope your gut heals soon.
Kelly Do you have any grand baby photos? I'm going through withdrawal.

Oh dear, you've all got me going on the split pea soup! I bought a ham hock from the butcher when I went out to buy my haggis. Then I bought a packet of split green peas. I've got onion, carrot and celery. Watch this space!
I will have to be rigorous about freezing sensible portions.

My first fall in 2020, going to the gym, black ice. I turned my head to hear what kirby was saying, big mistake. Hit my head hard. Gonna get a nice war wound on my hip too. Rookie mistake14

Did Patrick Godeau’s Lean Hot Body DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to take the water class
Okie – yes, that’s what I understand that Silver Sneakers allows you to do, but thanks so much for confirming it for me. Really, if the premium is even $100 for another insurance, I’m still breaking even. I checked out that link and, yep, each of the gyms are listed. But interestingly there was one listed that I didn’t even know took Silver Sneakers. That’s a real bonus. Not sure if I’d ever use that gym, tho.
If you can, check out Dear Abby today. Interesting letter about responses to people who comment on the food you eat
Green Room and then we think we’ll probably finish taking down the outside decorations. I predict that it’ll start to get cold because the Girl Scouts are starting to sell their cookies. It never fails, it seems that when they sell cookies, it gets cold.
Ginny OH – I’m glad you feel better. What is the respiratory tea?
Would you believe that one of the things I’ve never had is split pea soup??? I think I’d like to try it before I made it. Maybe I never had it since it’s not low in calories. Plus, it’s usually made with ham hocks and I’m not crazy about them.
Karen VA – I’m so sorry for your gs. That must be really scary for him and for you. Good news about Josephina!!!
If chocolates are individually wrapped, I donate them to the soup kitchen
SuziQ - what could your goal possibly be. To have a smaller pinkey????
M – sure hope you and/or your husband don’t have a reaction to either doses of the shingles shot
Pip – oh no! Hope you aren’t in bad shape.

Pip- ouch Vaseline heals bruises faster after you ice it.
Same weight as yesterday. Found out JR thinks Grover from Seasame Street is a bad kitty cat. Meow 😸. Rather him think that than fear monsters lol.
Thinking a few of JRs pants are getting tiny again. Not sure tho I still have the bigger sz 5’s mixed in with the 6’s he may be outgrowing some of them.
Still looking for a paper showing milestones for 3yr olds that’s accurate (I may be looking for 20yrs ago’s not bows in my mind I have no clue what they consider it to be now). JRs computer skills are getting better so new device for him to learn. Their era is technology like Daughters (nothing like ours where phones were strapped to walls). Cousin bought him wood blocks so we can catch up on those skills the LEGO blocks he was limited. Learning 1-20 now so hopefully he catches on fast so we can tackle more.
He still recognizes letters by name so doing good. Got no clue what toys are his age group so sticking with basics for his birthday to come. Cars to a map 🗺 you push buttons tells you facts. Too hard finding stuff his size range so sticking to things any size can play with.Had enough headache for Christmas. Doctor office measured him wrong so according to them he shrunk since they measured him last lol 😂...his feet were spread apart nurse was in a hurry . I like accurate only for JR but oh well they just don’t do it like they used to at all. I remember chest to back measurements even now guesstimate head, height, weight only y go. Of course the old way took more time but caught things faster. Reading kid articles just confusing me anymore it’s all about neutral toys y clothes to unisex all. I just want to know if sons on the mark with other boys his age group not what neutral colors Hollywood likes today.

Any musically minded folks on here might like to know that the music we tried to sing on Tuesday was
PER LA GLORIA D'ADORAVI
and
AMARILLI MIA BELLA
Bear it in mind that I have never sung in a choir, don't functionally read music and didn't know we were going to sing classical music until after the first class. We stayed anyway, out of curiosity, and I'm so glad we did!
It really helps to keep playing the various renditions on Utube so that it really sticks in my brain. There is even one with a vocal warm up, so I was singing away preparing my veggies for the soup and washing the kale for tonight.

Hi Michele.
No, my pinkie is fine and is at a great BMI and definitely has muscle definition - LOL!
I am very good at using clothes as camouflage. So my stomach area and back fat is very well under cover. I am not yet sure but I am leaning towards becoming a picture child of what women are actually capable of after we hit 50.
There were many at the event that could not believe how much progress I made. Of course some of my closer work pals did ask my age and almost dropped to the floor when I told them. I have motivated two so far.
And, then there is beach season. I absolutely admire women who keep their bodies in tip top shape after a certain age and are able to wear two pieces that do not include a lot of material. So there are many planks, sit ups, and push ups in my future. My goal really isn't to have six-pack abs - just be super firm.
Believe me - I can stand to lose a few more pounds. I just hit a healthy BMI (I am just under 5'9" and am 163 pounds). 150-155 looked good in my forties so I will evaluate once I hit that mark.
Hope you have a great day!6 -

LilyLady - Thank you for the resources! Those should be really helpful.
I took 6ish years of French in high school and university. However, being from smack in the middle of the country, there weren’t people to converse with regularly and I didn’t travel internationally until I was in my 30s. I have a French friend now and I can pick things up, but being fluent is just not gonna happen now.
I took about a year or more worth of German classes at a community college when I started dating the Mister. He is German and we were visiting Germany about every other year. When his mother passed, I spent a month in Germany and immersion helped a lot. However, we don’t speak German at home (he’s fully integrated into the US now) and I don’t go back to Germany as often as I used to. Plus, all his friends want to speak English when we visit. They make it too easy for me.
Now, I live in Southern California where I can walk out the door right now and converse in Spanish with the charity pickup guys, if I want to. We also started going to Spanish speaking countries more these days, since the mister isn’t feeling it necessary to visit his family so often in Europe. Hence my desire to speak Spanish, at least conversationally.
So far, I'm meeting my goal of running at least 10 miles per week. That said, it's only week 2 of the year. LOL. The mister is sick, so I am hoping he doesn't gift it to me and screw up my streak.

Machka: I went to flower arranging. I did the demo last month, so helped members with their interpretations.
Languages: I have studied French, and was fairly fluent; German, which I used while chaperoning exchange students in Austria; a smattering of Italian. Currently belong to a Latin study group. French and German are a little rusty, but come back after a few days if I go on holiday.
Rori: (((Hugs))) and 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I quite like split pea soup. DMiL made a lovely big pot every Saturday, and taught me how to make it. She said it was DH’s favourite, so when we got our own place, he got it every every Sat, until he plucked up the courage to tell me he hated it, but had never had the nerve to tell his mum!!! 😂 We rarely had it after that. His mum still made it especially for him when we would visit.

My youngest son was a freshman in high school when he finally figured out he loved bacon. So my fried rice had everything he loved, eggs, bacon, and chicken! I remember him eating 3 bowls of it, then he'd have it for breakfast the next day!

My grocery story has bags of pre-diced carrots, onions and celery in the frozen vegetable section, usually for $1.00. I keep these on hand at all times in my freezer for soup starters.

I am loving this split pea soup discussion. I made it for lunch in my IP with the stock from the Thanksgiving turkey carcass & the Christmas ham bone. Still licking my chops. Yummo!6

Good morning, all. It's been awhile. We went to Puerto Vallarta for Christmas this year -- took the 13 year old and left the two older boys to hang out with my mom for the week. I absolutely loved it. My mother and sons (all three) said that I will not be doing that again -- not over Christmas. But it was so relaxing, low-key, no-pressure. I would do that every year, if I could get away with it.
Two older boys are back in school. Middle son did not pull his grades up, so he is on some kind of warning/probation and was dropped from many of his semester classes, but he has an advising appointment today, so I am hopeful that he can get back up to 12 credits. If he doesn't do well this semester, he will be suspended. I had already removed the OSU sticker from my car, and on Monday, I took down his degree plan from the refrigerator. I am empty of all expectations. Older son is all EMT certified and moving on with classes to get the two year para medicine degree. But this term he is in more traditional college classes, which he has had very little patience for in the past. So, we will see.
I don't know if anyone remembers me venting about my mil, but she is in assisted living, chronic falling, has never taken care of herself, one fall resulted in a broken neck, refused to do physical therapy ("too hard!"), was put on hospice because basically, why not? It has been incredibly frustrating. She is the poster child for why we all should follow the "Stronger Next Year" plan. Anyway, her hospice nurse called my husband to say that he estimates that she has weeks to live. I am frustrated because I don't know why she is dying. She just is. My husband calls it "failure to thrive," but it is almost all lifestyle choices. She's not that old either, early 80s.
A few things:
Salted black licorice. A big YES!! I had it for the first time a few weeks ago when my husband brought back a small bag from Denmark/Sweden. Love it. But the thing I love the best is that it is impossible to binge on. One small piece is good enough for a couple days.
Split Pea Soup. Another big YES!! My recipe is much like what others have shared. It is my comfort food, as long as the onions aren't too sharp and it has a lot of ham (or bacon).
Rebecca -- so happy you heard from your son. What a kind and articulate writer he is. I loved the text you shared.
Karen -- so frightening about your grandson.
Allie -- could your boss have been joking? I can't believe anyone would say such a thing about docking your pay in seriousness. You do need to get out of there.
I know there is so much more to comment on, but I have lost most of what I've read over the last week.
I am trying to remain positive in a world of complete chaos. Hubby is finally starting to get serious about his own health -- his lifestyle has been very similar to his mother's lately -- very sedentary and no control over snacking -- so I am hoping that this terminal time with her will wake him up. He is the heaviest I have ever seen him. I have plateaued at the weight my body seems to like, but I am serious about getting back to where I was before my sister died.
Did anyone see the hair news about Ricki Lake? One of the things I worry about most is hair loss. I think I am okay, but I have a good friend at church who is balding quite a bit, and every time we are together, I feel panicked. If anyone wants to talk about that, I would love to, if you are comfortable. Do you have any plans for addressing it when it happens to you, if it hasn't already? I think about it way too much. I'll start another post about that.
Much love.

Female Hair Loss/Baldness:
So, like I said, I worry about this more now than I used to worry about my teeth falling out!
Here's what I'm doing and my plan:
Once a week, I use my husband's baldness shampoo. To be clear, I think it's mostly medicine show stuff, but I figure, why not? And it is good to change up your shampoo every few days anyway.
I no longer color my hair. Avoid blow drying. Rarely use a curling iron.
I comb my hair with a wide tooth, sturdy comb, and at that, usually only once or twice a day.
I will consider a high quality wig.
I have toyed with the idea of getting a buzz cut during the summer anyway, so maybe I could do that.
Slow, slow weight loss without drastically cutting out any one food group. (Ricki Lake attributes her hair loss, partially, to drastic yo-yo dieting.) Well, of course, with the exception of gluten. I am Celiac, so wheat, rye, and barley are off the menu.
Even though I am not a hat person, I will consider wearing hats or head scarves full time. (When I see the old believers or Muslim women with their head gear, I am wistful -- "They don't have to worry about this because no one will ever know when they are losing their hair.")
Louise Erdrich has a descriptive line of an older indigenous woman in her book Tracks that says basically that the woman's braids are "slowly melting off her head." I think about that a lot when I check my part, multiple times a day!
Please tell me I'm not alone here.
Here's the link to an article about Ricki Lake:
