@Teresa502 I guess tarps would be a little fun, as long as the wind wasn't blowing and it wasn't storming. I did not hear about the girl being attacked. Was she attacked by a person or an animal?

I worked from 7:30 - 4:30 at daycare today. Came home and went to mom's intending to do the push mowing for her lawn. After about 15 minutes, her mower quit working. Mine died when I mowed last week. Looks like a new push mower is in my future. When I got home, I went for a walk. Did a quick mile in the field.5 -

@polskagirl01 - Somehow I was just reminded about when I was actually PASSED by an old lady SPEED WALKER of all things in the late part of my second full marathon! I was so irked by that! But that little old lady beat my *kitten* fair and square!
I’ve told this story before but in my first 5k I was determined to beat a lady with a stroller. Little did I know she was a running coach who led a class on how to run with a stroller! Plus she was about a decade and a half younger. She became my secret nemesis and I did eventually beat her, two years later, at the same race - when she was running with a stroller with a whopping great toddler, and seven months pregnant as well!
@polskagirl01 Congrats on your half, so happy you got to enjoy it after the previous disappointment!
My husband and I got out for an easy 5k in the boiling heat today. We need to start increasing our mileage but it’s hard to feel motivated in this weather. His heart was perfect today, though!
I woke up two days after my wreck feeling like I’d been hit by a truck, then realized, oh hey, I was hit by a truck! I keep finding new sore places. Right now my whole left shin is turning green, didn’t even realize it took a bump. The impact was so forceful that both our seats snapped off from the floor. It’s a miracle no one was seriously injured! I still think my husband has a fractured elbow but the treatment for a not-displaced fracture in that location is a sling so as long as he has full function I’m letting him get away with not visiting the doctor.7 -
Fartleks today in gale-force southerly winds (feels like 5 degrees celcius apparently). Planned it so most of them were tailwinds, however, the 2nd 60 second interval managed to be both headwind and uphill, which was unpleasant, and my final interval was really speedy until I turned a corner with five seconds to go and nearly came to a complete standstill thanks to a particularly strong gust. Managed to avoid the rain though, which was a bonus.7

7 miles this morning. Started lightly raining after mile 1, then heavy downpour by mile 3. Was about to turn left to head home, but then the rain let up, so turned right and got another 4 miles in. Rain felt soooo good. That concludes June for me, and marks 1 year without any real injury (knock on wood)!!! Since I started running 9 years ago, that has never happened.

I don't remember my goals. I'm at 87 today and have 4 scheduled for tomorrow.
I'll end June with 495 miles for the year. 5 miles short of where I had hoped to be. Oh well.4 -
@rheddmobile Glad you got out for a run and you DH's heart was good. Hope you continue to heal and quit finding new sore spots. So glad no one was hurt any worse. When I was running races several years ago, there was an 80 year old lady who ran a lot of the races. I always tried really hard to beat her...often passing her in the home stretch. LOL She had been a runner all of her life and told me she had to stop running marathons when she turned 70, I believe. She was so sweet.

@rheddmobile - Hope you heal quickly and don't wind up with any major bruising that shows up in the next day or so. My wife was in a wreck where the seat broke off the floor and a couple days later was trying to figure out why a huge portion of her lower left back side turned black only to then vaguely remember hitting her hip against the console.

Today's run was a mix of "this sucks" followed by "this is great"! Basically the running in Z4 part was the more unpleasant part, but as soon as that was over the sky opened up and I was running in a nice refreshing downpour that lasted until I was a block from home. That part was very nice!
My guesstimate of miles I would run in June is going to come up real close, but will be a just fraction of a mile under my 105 goal. I consider that a win since I run based on time and couldn't be sure what to expect of my pace in the warmer June weather. Looking back had I not had to cut my 6/20 long run short I could have actually surpassed my goal by about 4 miles.
Now to try and guess what my July mileage might be...8 -
Finished off June in the rain. Gotta say though the difficulty ramp up between C25k W3 to W4 is pretty dramatic. I can see myself repeating W4 a few times.
PSA: For anyone looking to start C25K, I do recommend the NHS's totally free program (U.K.'s National Health Service). It is avail as either stand-alone, downloadable .MP3's or as an app. Yeah, there are tons of paid & free C25K programs available, but this one by the NHS is well produced and the royalty free music used in the production isn't cringy like most free C25K programs. Highly recommended.
@skippygirlsmom yeah I took a wrong turn at Nashville. By the time I realized my error, it was just faster to take I-20 to ATL than to backtrack. Cool shoes. Who knew Finland had a 105yo athletic shoe company?
@polskagirl01 It's really interesting women only make up one-quarter of the running community in your country (extrapolating from your race). Over here, I'd say it's flipped. Judging from what I see on the street, it's probably a 66%/33% women/men split for recreational runners where I live. In organized races, it's pretty close to 50/50
@quilteryoyoquilteryoyo I do not envy your yard mowing activity. Brings back memories of my youth spent pushing a Snapper mower down the steep bank of 2 backyard ponds then dragging it back up. Rinse & repeat for 2 straight days. Why I never thought to ask my parents to buy a weedwhacker is beyond me.

I wrapped up June with a very humid 5 mile run this morning which included 3 miles of hill repeats. I set my goal at a low 60 miles since I knew I had a big hiking vacation. I ended the month with 84.4 running miles. Tomorrow, I’m heading to Cade’s Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains to bike. The 11-mile loop is closed to automobile traffic on Wednesdays which provides a great opportunity for walkers, runners and bikers to observe the wildlife and beauty.
@skippygirlsmom – Would love for you to be close by and share in my adventures. I’m blessed to have friends as crazy as I am and willing to try different things. Looks like those shoes come in a wide width in one model. Most stores don’t typically carry a large selection of wide width shoes but I will have to check out our local Fleet Feet to see if they have any I can try.
@WhatMeRunning – I’ve also tried the Hokas a couple of different times but always ended up with niggles that I attributed to the shoes. A friend sends running clothes, shoes, water bottles, etc. to a running club in Belize every few months and that’s where mine ended up going in almost new condition.
@polskagirl01 – I’m glad that you are accepted and made to feel welcome. You may not know it, but I bet you are inspiring and influencing other women to step out of their comfort zone and join in the fun.
Sounds like a wonderful visit @katharmonic. I love running in new places! You get to see so many different things that you otherwise would miss.

@polskagirl01 - great job on your HM. I can't imagine running at night here but during the summer it would be so much cooler!
@Teresa502 - I think I would love sleeping out in a hammock. We used to sleep out on the ground, no tent, so we could fall asleep looking at the stars. At least in a hammock you would be away from most crawly bugs.
On the Hoka discussion... I tried them once too. They are way too cushioned for me. Heavily cushioned shoes make me feel like I am running through mud, it just feels so difficult! That said I did get a pair of the more (moderate) cushioned Topos and love them as an alternative to my low cushion ST-3s
@RunsOnEspresso - being 5 miles behind on your yearly goal is doable... I am 150 miles behind and would need to run over 130 miles per month for the rest of the year to catch up. Not gonna happen! I was overly optimistic when I set the goal though. Really hoped to be healthy enough all year to get in at least 100 miles/month and so far the closest I have gotten in any month is 91.
@pfeiferlindsey - I hope your foot injury isn't serious and it gets better quickly!
I saw a short bit about the Coeur D'Alene Ironman this morning. It was run this last weekend in Idaho and is a Kona qualifier. They had 2100 participants! As you probably know the western US is having a terrible heat wave that was at its peak Sunday and Monday. On Sunday the temps were well over 100F and they said the pavement was over 134F! I thought maybe since they were up in elevation (5000ft climb) that it would be cooler. I also heard that they had to suspend the Olympic track and field trials in Eugene OR because of the heat.
I am still trying to get out and run/walk. I don't want to completely lose all my conditioning. Yesterday was not a great run. I took Hobbes the Vizsla out for a walk first because it was already getting so hot so early. Normally I wouldn't have worried about it too much but we had agility class last night and he does much better when he has had at least a little activity during the day and isn't just a bundle of pent up craziness. By the time I got out it didn't feel terrible and there was a breeze but the sun was definitely hot. I got to the trail and immediately had to 'run' to the bathroom with an upset stomach (WTH!). Then I set my interval timer and took off, fully planning to make it a short run. I went out on the trail further than I thought I would but when I turned around I realized the breeze had been making it tolerable and I could no longer feel it. My legs were SO tired. I sat on a bench for a bit and chatted with a guy walking by. He was probably 100lbs overweight but said he had hurt his hip a while ago and 6 mos ago could barely walk with a walker. He said he had seen me out on the trail quite a bit and asked if I had run for a long time. He was surprised when I said I had started around age 55 and had been running about 10 years, he thought I was in my 40's! Made my day and made me realize how fortunate I am to be able to run, albeit very slowly, right now. So I got up and ran to the closer trail entrance and then walked home. the dew point was 67 and it was very humid for us at 70%. Supposed to have a chance of storms the rest of the week - such bizarre weather! Oh and by the time we got to agility at 7pm it had cooled off and actually felt chilly, well at least until we started running. Hobbes was still a complete nut case!

As for me, I was on call last night but no calls! So up at 630am for my Wednesday run. I didn't last long at following my watch. Like others I HATED not knowing what the next day had planned. And when I was playing with garmin connect I realised that one of the trainers allowed me to set my plan for my next HM - 20 weeks away. So I set that up instead. She's got me running at a slightly slower pace atm than I was but I suspect that will change.
Sod today was 3.22km at easy pace (I assume that's 2miles...) I extended it to 30 mins and did 4.39k again.
Weather news, its COLD. literally freezing here. It was 0 degrees when I went out (32f). It's still and cloudless though and absolutely beautiful. I saw a stunning sunrise and was rewarded by a fantastic view of our mountain, covered with snow!

PS I only did 90k in June. I know some of that was tapering but I'm surprised I didn't have any long runs! My longest run in June was 8k. Granted that was at race pace but that's a shock. No wonder I didn't feel prepared, if in the 4 weeks before my HM my longest run was 8k (HM was supposed to be the 27th).
Unsure if I'd follow that plan again.6 -

I had always tried to do some strength training in the past, but didn't stick with it for any length of time. Last year after the pain went away, I concentrated on strength training (mostly body weight exercises and resistance bands) 5 days a week (lower body on run days, upper body/core on rest days), and I have been walking 60 minutes every day. I have been doing that religiously since last May. So unless it's a coincidence, I think I can attribute the injury-free running to consistent strength and conditioning.

Last year after the pain went away, I concentrated on strength training (mostly body weight exercises and resistance bands) 5 days a week (lower body on run days, upper body/core on rest days), and I have been walking 60 minutes every day. I have been doing that religiously since last May. So unless it's a coincidence, I think I can attribute the injury-free running to consistent strength and conditioning.
That's great. I also do strength and conditioning (body weight exercises) in the form of isometric and plank exercises. Can't believe the difference it's made. It's really aided my running and allows me to run at a faster pace and like you, injury-free.
On my non-running days I do Rebounder sessions. It has strengthened my ankles and is perfect for the trail running I do, as it stops me from going over on my ankles and if I do, I can quickly correct my form, without causing injury.4 -

It was hot here today, so I chose to do my run on the treadmill. Today was a fast finish run - zone 1 for 5 min, zone 2 for 25 min, then 10 min at zone 3. I ran 3.1 miles and walked a total of one mile for warm up and cool down. Just as I was finishing the run, mom called to let me know that my brother had taken his push mower down there. I finished up the run, rested a few minutes, and then went to mom's and finished doing the trim work I didn't get done yesterday. According to Garmin, it was 84°F with a feels like of 87°F. However, I checked my thermometer before I left and it read 88°F in the shade. Not sure which is correct, but it was hot. Fortunately, it was cloudy with a breeze and actually sprinkled rain while I was mowing. That really helped and the temp had dropped to 84°F on my thermometer when I got home and hour later.6 -

I had a great girl's night at the lake with my mom and sisters and daughter and nieces. My mom was totally surprised. She said it was the best birthday she ever had. I took stuff to run, but I ended up not running. We stayed up until 3:00 am and I was just too tired. But I don't usually run on Mondays anyway. So today I got out and ran 5.4 miles. It was raining when I got up, but had mostly stopped by the time I got out and it was warm and humid. I thought it might be a miserable run, but it really wasn't. I started out pretty slow but got faster as I went and ended up with negative splits. It was nice to have a good run after feeling so poorly last week. I am planning to run tomorrow, but I will still be a little short of my 116 mile goal. But I have met my usual 100 mile goal so I am ok with it.

Finished the month with a lovely aerobic run - one of those effortless ones that are all too infrequent - on a freezing yet sunny day. Twas sublime. Managed to total 257.83km in a total of 24:23 hours for June, burning 12,776 calories (and the rest as Garmin always short changes me by loads – the standard calorie-burned-while-running calculation has it at 17,311).9
