Interesting talk about what causes pancreatitis in dogs...
It is the cooked fat that is the problem. Dry dog food is cooked at very high heat and it makes the fat in the dog food bad for the dogs. If fat is raw it is good for the dog. The urge is to put the dog on a low fat diet. They need to be put on a good fat diet. Dogs needs good fats like we do. So omega 3 fats that are found in grass fed hamburger, fish, flax seeds if they are ground, olive oil, and coconut oil are all good sources and need to be continued even if the dog has pancreatitis. The key is to get them off over cooked dog food. The high amount of starch that is in manufactured dog food also can contribute to this problem.
She also said something interesting about frustration can lead to pancreatitis in dogs who are bred to have a job like border collies if they are not given enough exercise and tasks to do it may lead to problems for them.
It makes me think about my own health and what kind of fats I eat good and bad. I also think about my frustration levels and what I can do to lower them. For humans I think we could also add worry. I have a friend who admits she worries too much, and she has gut issues.
So even though I am listening to the program to improve DrewB health I do think it is getting me to address some of my own bad habits. Today instead of having some ice cream I cooked some blueberries then added unsweetened coconut and some cashews on top.
I am also going to throw out our deep fat fryer that we have maybe used three times in the past twenty years and I have no intention of ever using it again.
I am going to look into using our convection oven to make dehydrated snacks for Drew so in the winter I can play find the treats with her when we can't get outside when it is more than 10 below outside.
I eventually want to get her off dental bones too. If you read the label they are made of some kind of starch. Not the best for teeth and/or her health.

I did some yoga and my marching video! Yay! I really slacked off on my exercise for awhile there. I don't really know why. But I am back on the wagon today.

I wish MFP would let us define our own streaks instead of just the login streak. It would be cool if my signature showed how many weeks I had done five hours of exercise, and how many weeks I had eaten a proper amount of calories six days a week. But I don't actually want to pay for these features 😊

Barbara – your trip sounds heavenly. I totally forgot about Canadian thanksgiving. Happy Thanksgiving everyone who celebrates. And you can always send me your leftovers...lol They MIGHT last until our Thanksgiving….lol
Rebecca – I remember reading a book when the kids were teenagers called “Get Out of my Life but First Would You Drive me and Cheryl to the Mall”. Anyway, in the book they said that the more a kid pulls away, the more they come back. I’ve found this to be very true. Maybe you need to give your son some time. I know how much it hurts you, tho
barbie – happy birthday to Jake
Vince has always wanted to go to the night race at Bristol (NASCAR). So I was thinking of giving him an early Father’s Day gift and take him. It’s been on his bucket list for years. Well, I just found out that the race was run Sept. 17. So looks like he’ll be going next year.
Lanette – I don’t think I would be able to drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. However, what I many times do is have a bran muffin or something like that and it causes me to drink.
Anne DE – have fun at the show. This weekend we’re going to the Green Room to see “Midnight and Magnolias”. Never heard of it, but I understand it’s a comedy. They were scheduled to have “All the King’s Men” but evidentally, they couldn’t find enough of the right kinds of actors.
Went off the plan today. They were celebrating the Oct. birthdays at bowling and I had some cake, a few nuts (they weren’t very good), chips and salsa, a cookie, cheese, tomatoes and carrots. Well, I had some good choices in there…..
Ceramics tonight. Hopefully, I can get Jess’ snail done and fired before we go to see her next weekend Not sure that I will but I will certainly try.

I drink water, no tea or coffee or pop or alcohol. Eight ounces is part of my Isagenix shake for breakfast and 16 ounces is flavored with raspberry Emergen-C. It feels like just the right amount. I eat a low sodium diet (right around 1600 mg)
Today was the start of the neighborhood yard waste clean up so we were able to take all our yard waste free to a drop off pile three blocks away
Next jobs (besides the fence) area sweeping the garage (Jake's) and sitting the compost in the older bin (mine) and a nap

Zoom went well, but it completely threw off my no alcohol vow. My difficult friend always triggers me (reminds me of my mum) and I need relief!
All good. DH and I had a good discussion about triggers , which was very enlightening. I hadn't realised I triggered him the other day and I think his DS needs to hear why he couldn't go to the funeral of his aunt. We are such complicated creatures. I love his growing awareness of what sets him off and his desire to rise above it. We both are able to make allowances for our respective wounds. Apart from his adoption and difficult childhood with a mentally ill mother and a distant father, the trauma of his beloved partner's death from cancer is still with him. So grateful that he can talk about it to me. He is very respectful of my childhood wounds and need to be in control, but he sometimes forgets about my stillbirth trauma.

Heather,-There is something about a stillborn death that is difficult for many people to fully appreciate, don't you think? When I lost baby Joy, I realized I was the only one who had known her. It's hard for other people to realize the enormity of the grief - it's such a lonely sort of grief. I was so appreciative of my mother's empathy. Joy's father Billy was as supportive as he could be, but it was my mother who got me through that time of utter despair. I am so fortunate to have had a wonderful mother and I miss her so much.

Dang it Lanette - I hate to poke this particular bubble, but it really is something I've heard for decades and it's a myth. Everyone needs to deal with coffee or tea and/or lack of same in their own way. However, if coffee and tea weren't recognized by my body as liquid due to their recognized diuretic action, I would be long dead. For 15 years straight, they were the only kind of liquid my newly surgerized gut could handle (the gastric bypass was Sept. 2005).
Straight water, which I actually loved drinking pre-surgery, hit my stomach like a fist to the gut. I could and did drink water in a pinch, but it was painful at best and at worst would double me over. For whatever reason, adulterated water is less painful. Someone once told me it had to do with the specific gravity of water, but I could never find research to back that up. I can tell you I've read a ton of research that says your body adjusts to your caffeine intake to the point that coffee and/or tea have only the diuretic action that any liquid has.
All that said, the only reason I am bringing it up is that there is such a thing as too much liquid intake, which they're finally beginning to realize, especially for runners like Pip and Heather's son and daughter-in-law. It's called hyponatremia. Doesn't affect most of us, in all honesty, but ignoring coffee/tea as liquids isn't actually necessary. More and more research also says that you should drink liquids when you're thirsty, and skip the pressure to imbibe a specific amount. Very respected sources are very clear about it.
ETA: The reason that my inability to drink straight water for 15 of the last 17 years instead of all of them is because one of the weirder silver linings of my recent medical issues has been that I can finally drink water again without pain. I am so stinking grateful for that! My daughter made me start sipping water when she was here nursing me through the worst of it a couple years back... I couldn't drink coffee or tea either, and she was afraid I was going to die, so nagged me into drinking water one sip at a time. Worked, too.
Down off my little soapbox...
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
Agreed on the hyponatremia ... as a long distance cyclist, I was nearly hospitalised with it once. I was so sick. Fortunately my nurse mother was able to take care of me and that was the only reason I didn't go to the hospital.
I also realised (too late) what was happening and knew some tricks to recover but was too sick to help myself.

I don't eat them if they aren't in the house. I'm not sure how they get put into my shopping cart from time to time, but I wish they would stop, lol.
Lisa - I think WW finally made their peace with "drink to thirst". I generally don't get thirsty unless I've eaten something salty like pizza. And I probably get 8 cups of water in with coffee and tea alone. I just watched Dr. Matt's presentation on it this morning, and he said something interesting. Do we want to be raisins or grapes, meaning do we want to add more liquid to our diets to help our systems run smoother. I've heard folks who drink a lot of water have good complexions. Mine could use some help in the wrinkle department.
He mentioned drinking a glass of water when a person first gets up. I too can't take water very well on an "empty stomach." I suppose if I was constipated I'd look at that as a possible solution. Isn't that why God made coffee though?
I agree a person can drink too much water and deplete electrolytes and put a burden on their systems. Some folks haul big jugs of water around all day and chug a lug because they are convinced they need to meet some specific goal that might not be best for them.
My goal isn't to chug down an additional 8 glasses of water (my well water tastes great) just like there was no way I could eat 30 gm of protein for breakfast.
But I'll be curious to see if there's any benefit to me even drinking, let's say, 3 or 4 cups of just plain tap water throughout the day in addition to tea and coffee. Maybe cut coffee back a little, I tend to go overboard. I just have to remind myself to do it.
I rarely have darker yellow pee unless I've taken B vitamins, otherwise it appears I'm getting enough.
And regarding eating sugar after supper .... I have noticed when I eat something sugary before bed, like a dish of ice cream, or some cookies, I usually don't have to get up and pee a few times during the night!
If I eat something like cheese and nuts or a food without a lot of added sugar, then it's a night time marathon even though I restrict liquids a couple hours before bed! Maddening.
Head scratcher - does any have clues as to why this might be happening? Maybe that's why I steer back into sugar territory after supper after doing really well during the day.
Lanette

Yes I do have an idea why that's happening but I will leave you in suspense till later when I can actually type.
As for sugar, the only extra sugar I eat is dessert after dinner. We were having 2 desserts, but I have cut back to 1.1 -

I am so happy with what I accomplished today! I made 2 trips to the storage unit, and tomorrow I will clean it out entirely! I am looking forward to being rid of that albatross. I thought I'd never see the day! I just kept thinking about Barbie getting tasks done by doing a little each day, and I plugged along, and now the storage unit is down to mostly empty boxes, a floor lamp, and a container of random poles/canes/table legs. AND the attic in the house is empty! I still have so much to do, but I can see the job shrinking and becoming more manageable with time and persistence. The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning is working for me! Quite frankly, I was skeptical, pessimistic, and cynical when I started out 18 months ago, with 2 houses, a full shed, a full storage unit, and a full attic. Now I'm down to one house with an empty attic, and the only real onus at this point is the garage...my next project! The rest inside the house is just a matter of sorting and tossing and gifting. The gifting is what sparks joy for me. I have made so many new friends through my Buy Nothing group. It's rejuvenating!

Hello to All!
I had my MRI and follow up appointment with my ortho today. It seems I have multiple issues, but he isn't recommending surgery for now. At most, he said if I cannot control inflammation with OTC ibuprofen, consider a steroid shot. The only "can't dos" are squats and lunges and things the rotate the knee with a lot of pressure. I do have a complex meniscus tear that is degenerative. That doesn't sound good, but he didn't seem to think I should worry over it...and I won't.
The inflammation is likely caused by a burst Baker's cyst, which was likely caused by the meniscus tear. So, for now, I will hammer it with ibuprofen for 4 weeks and see what happens.
I'll concentrate on high protein and resistance workouts combined with a lot of walking, binking, and kayaking for now. On the bright side, maybe my arms will look good and maybe I'll see more of my abs.
Water-It has been disproven that one needs 8 glasses of water each day and that coffee and tea are diuretics. The caffeine is what you should be aware of...not scared of. The color of your urine is determined by the amount of salt in your body and your system's balancing act. I think the concern for the medical community is that people drinking too much booze and sugar and are hoping that by encouraging more water drinking, people will replace alcohol and high sugar drinks with water instead. "Listen to your body" is what I've been hearing lately.
Sending good thoughts for those who need support right now. I know there are many of you.

Karen-you should feel contented! That is a tremendous project you have worked through. My house is much closer to what I want it to be. I will admit-I don't think I had nearly as much stuff as you did-but I had way too much useless junk. My goal is completion prior to move next year. I can't do much right now due to surgery-but I can maintain what I have (which will be tremendous progress).
Tina-hope your approach helps you knee. I always prefer trying alternatives prior to jumping to surgery.
I think the water amounts are right up there with when are eggs good or bad for you? It seems like "they" keep changing their minds. I agree-listen to your body and try to moderate in all things.
On the medical front:Doctor's office called today about my paperwork to be off work (I've been off since last Weds!). She asked me if he told me how long he wanted me off. Uhm, not really-he started with the standard 4-6 weeks. I had asked him, since I have a non-physical job, if I could start working from home. He said that might not be a bad idea. Long story short-she is writing paperwork permitting to work from home on a part-time basis as tolerated-and I will see about updated statement/release when I see him on 20th. Biggest problem is not being able to sit upright for 8 hours yet. She told me that would definitely not be a good idea. And this is why I have spent much of my career getting clarifications from doctor's offices!
Asked neighbor if he could take trash out for me tomorrow-he said of course. Believe I have dental appointment on Wednesday that I rescheduled before surgery. Will call them tomorrow to confirm. Driving there should not be a problem. Will make sure not to take any pain medicine prior-but Tylenol should do the job.
Well, I've been sitting for a bit. Going in to lie down and read and watch tv.
Take care all,

Walked the wetlands for 80 min. (12,000) while waiting for Ezie. The weather was perfect. A bit chilly at the start but took my jacket off half way through.
Zumba in a few minutes- another 60 min. there.
Need to figure out dinner when I get home. Only ate 350cal so far today( a huge salad) so will eat a bit bigger than usual. No left overs so not sure what I am going to have. Maybe some soup or make quick nachos with Colby cheese and jalapenos.
My friend that started me on Zumba is going to go with me tonight. She had been going to a gym so hasn't gone with me in a year and a half or so . Will be nice.
Had my Perrier Energy drink so should be able to get me through the class but hopefully burn off it so I can sleep tonight.

Feeling better, empty but better. I have "distanced" myself a bit, and don't cry myself up into a frenzy anymore. Maybe going thru the grief with my sister, I just know he loves us, and the other two are very communicative with us, so that's good. Lee is sad and confused along with me, though he rolls his eyes at my Chaplain outreach situation. He says the Chaplain is for the crew and immediate family, not mommas.

Pretty much what I eat up till about 7 pm just about every day. After 7, it's a bit of a different story.
Oh, and not necessarily the pad thai every day. That can vary a bit. Today's dinner was veggies, as usual, with one veggie burger (no bun).
And often the snacks include fruit.
