Hey, look at this! To be honest, these were dummy intervals: run as far as I could, then walk. Basically, I ran about 3/5 of the time. Which is more than half of it. Ehm.. maximum HR: 194 I guess I'm not really fit at the moment
Did physio today as well and got my HR up to 185 when doing mountain climbers, and then a pilates pull up an incline on a rollerboard kind of thing7 -
Happy anniversary @Mari33a 🎉1

Happy Anniversary @Mari33a ... yes the word strangle comes to mind when I think of my spouse too
@Scott6255 ... Hahahahahahahaha
Coming upto 17 years for me this year.

@yirara I think some of us naturally run HOT. My heart rate will go up into the 190s and also be consistently in the 180's if I am trying to run faster. As long as I don't feel like puking or like I am in trouble I don't pay too much worry to it. I wish it was a sign of conditioning but I think after 50 years of running my HR is always going to run high. I actually put an alarm on my watch for 195 which has gone off once or twice in the past few months. Summer is hard. Dew point makes it harder than we know.3 -

I have an outsized chest cavity and generally low BP and HR. Also, I'm old and obese. Yesterday while doing "Goal Pace" intervals on the burning hot track I only got up to a max 147, ave 129.

Oh yes, I know I won't faint with such a high HR. It's just normal for me. Well, when I'm fitter than now (didn't run since early December when I had a big accident) my HR is around 170-175ish at this pace and will get into the high 180s when doing a sprint near the end. Not worried. I'll get fitter again. I'm just super amused by the numbers. I showed my physio my HR when doing mountain climbers during my therapy today and he was like2 -
Got in 7 TM miles after work. I really thought I did 6, but when I looked down it said 7. I guess I was really into the show I was watching 😁

@chris_in_cal - I think I have a normal chest cavity but also have a very low HR, been that way since I was much younger and the reason for my pacemaker. It got to the point that my HR was barely hitting 120 max when I ran so the PM is designed to not allow the HR to go too low but to also help when my HR needs to keep up with my exertion level. I could never get my HR up to 150 on the treadmill stress tests and on the recent chemical stress test, supposedly better than on the treadmill, it only got to 87. I suspect with the chemical test the PM saw no reason to boost my HR.
My blood pressure also tends to be very low as well, except when I go to the doctor's office 😂.
@AlphaHowls - Love Wander Over Wander! He looks like he could be a good running partner if you can borrow him sometimes!4 -

Hi everyone. I am Leigh. I am new to this group. Looking to get 100 miles in August as I build up and train for the Marine Corp Marathon on October 29th.
I am currently a mess of a runner. I've spent far more time away from it than I have wanted and am very slowly 🐌 working my way back.
I was once a consistent 1:50 half marathoner and 4:00 marathoner focused on qualifying for Boston... and then the pandemic happened, and injury (stress fracture) happened, and demanding, high stress job happened...and it all came to a screeching halt. I stopped staining, I stopped moving (I was working 90 hours a week in front of a computer) and then I gained 20 lbs and lost every bit of strength and fitness I had.
The injury has healed and the job has gotten better (still demanding and high stress but half the hours) and I am trying to move more and get back (or at least close to) my former self.
It is frustrating to struggle through things that were once easy at an embarrassingly slow pace and I try to tell myself to be patient with myself and give myself the opportunity to build back....but it is hard not to feel defeated every time I go out the door.
Recovery is also a struggle and I am trying to balance how hard I can push myself with how much rest/recovery I need to keep going. I continually underestimate how much the stress of my job impacts my ability to truly recover and sometimes feel like I am taking one step forward to take 2 steps back.
At this point, my goal is to build my endurance to 26.2 by the end of October. Finishing is my only goal. I am not focused on pace and trying to accept that this will be slow in comparison to what I once could do. I will build the miles now and work on pace after I've gotten the endurance.
In order to do this I know I need to be consistent and disciplined. Disciplined to run the miles but also disciplined to recover properly and disciplined about nutrition. The truth is I have lost my ability to be self disciplined. I've developed bad habits and let myself veer off plan way too easily....
Which leads me to why I am here. I am hoping that by joining this group and publicly proclaiming the mileage I intend to run it will help me stay accountable to my intentions. I hope to get support in my struggles and support others as they struggle to achieve their goals as well. And as a bonus to my co‐workers whose eyes glaze over every time i mention running, I can "talk" to other like-minded people who share a passion for running and can relate to both the pain and joy it brings 😊9 -
Welcome @Leigh_b,
You sound like you'll be a great addition to this thread. I can really relate to some of what you wrote and am looking forward to seeing your consistency.Which leads me to why I am here. I am hoping that by joining this group and publicly proclaiming the mileage I intend to run it will help me stay accountable to my intentions.
I wouldn't look for inspiration on recovery here, some of these crazies do HM cool downs after a big day. We just privately marvel and do our best to make progress.
Welcome.5 -
August 1: Walked 1.00 miles - Ran 1.50 miles
August 2: Wun 3.00 miles - driveway after mowing my lawn - yellow jacket stings
August 3: Walk 1.50 miles - Ran 1.00 mile - treadmill
August 4: Walk 1.00 mile - Ran 6.40 miles - treadmill (birthday run)
15.40/80 mile goal
Yesterday, I did a short run before going into work. I was short on time, so did quarter mile intervals....did 4 x (.25/.1/.15 miles at 3.8/6.0/5.5 mph) Total wun was 23:42 min and 2.50 miles. Splitting out the runs, I ran 1.0 mile in 10:32 min. That's pretty good for me.
I did a treadmill session this morning. I walked a total of 1 mile for warm up and cool down and ran 6.40 miles for my 64th birthday. I ran the first 15 min by doing 5 min each at 4.5, 4.6, 4.7 mph, then I walked a couple of min and started running 5 min, walked 2, then ran 4, walked 2 after 45 min, then did quarter mile intervals of running and walking. All the rest of the runs after 15 min were between 4.2 and 4.5 mph. I was just wanting to get the distance in and not really trying for speed...thankfully. My avg pace was 14:08 min/mile, avg HR was 128 with a max of 140 bpm.
Afterwards, I got ready and went to the doctor for my annual exam. All looks good and he doesn't want to see me again for a year, unless something comes up. (It always does.) He is going to order a lung function test to see if the issue with breathing and tightness in the chest sometimes could be asthma. Blood work was all good. So, I'm happy with that.
Then, I went to Publix, a great grocery store if you aren't familiar with it, to get some things I needed, including my free birthday cake and a free bouquet of flowers for having their app on my phone for a year. Can't beat that.5 -
@AlphaHowls The stings hurt like crazy. Upon closer inspection, I think I had 4 or 5 stings on my ankle and one on my back. My ankle was still a little swollen today, but not bad. I've never used Ban, but have used vinegar before. Love the new pets! I hope your back is feeling better.
Congrats @kgirlhart ! Great running.
Great treadmill run @martaindale . I'm still a sweaty mess, even when I run on the treadmill.
Glad you enjoyed the intervals @chris_in_cal !
Great running @tarun_yadavA !
You're doing great @knotmel ! Love the comparison to when you first started running. Things sure have changed!
@Mari33a Great running and congratulations on your 25th anniversary! Enjoy your vacation!
Great intervals @yirara !
I love it when that happens @Scott6255 ! Well 7 miles accidently has NEVER happened, but an extra half mile has.
Welcome @Leigh_b ! I know it is hard, but try to not compare yourself to what you were 4 years ago. If you must do any comparison, compare today to last week, or last month. It's the improvements now that count and the consistency. You can do it and we are here to help. You have found a wonderfully supportive group, which can move fast sometimes.

Welcome.
I heard my name being called!!!
Back spasms are quiet right now. I had a dental cleaning (no cavities) and had a guard made since it appears the headaches may be from grinding/clenching. I then traveled over to the chiropractor, who exclaimed once he touched my back, "whoa that's tight". Very sore since the tens unit relaxed it down for blood flow to happen.7 -
Today's plan was some warmup then four 400m hill repeats. There's a good spot right in my neighborhood.
August Running Goal: 18 runs, 75 miles- Aug 1 - 3.00 miles
- Aug 2 - 3.85 miles
- Aug 4 - 3.27 miles

Welcome @Leigh_b. You are in the right place. You'll find plenty of support and inspiration her
@quilteryoyo glad your wasp stings are getting better. That is one of my biggest fears. I think I may have been stung by a bee ONCE in my life, but not even sure about that. So I am really scared if I was to get stung now. No telling what would happen 😮
Got in my 6 TM miles today.

Better late than never?!? My goal is simply run every day for at least 30 min for remainder of August... yay!!9
-
Hello everyone! Greetings everyone joining! Today was my hardest California run yet. I left late and ran for the hills . It was an uphill run ending at this cool park I used to go to with my grandparents, where I promptly saw a lady walking her healing cat on a leash. I wasn’t sure if I was delirious from the heat, but you do see some different things near LA .
I ran a total of 10.3km, bringing my monthly total to 27.7/160km so far.
Almost at the hills!
@quilteryoyo My daughter is 6, so any runs she does have to be quite short and fun. She is good at sticking with the pace I set until she gets tired. Hopefully she will like hiking too, because we leave tomorrow for our hiking adventure7 -
Morning all
@quilteryoyo OMG. Love that carrot cake!! 😍
@Leigh_b welcome! This is a great group... A fair few of us here have run marathons... So you're in good company 😊
Good luck with October!
@md_long27 welcome! ... Same! My goal is to run everyday in August (so far, so good!) ... Good luck with the remaining 26 days for this month!
@chris_in_cal good running Sir5 -

Have a nice wknd all8 -
@AlphaHowls Glad your back is better and hope the mouth guard helps your headaches.
Great job on the hill repeats @chris_in_cal !
Nice job on the treadmill run @Scott6255 . I don't know how you have managed to avoid being stung all your life. It would be scary now. You never know if you are allergic until it happens. I hope you don't have to find out.
Welcome @md_long27 . Sounds like a great goal. Have you been running long?
Nice run @Laurz9191 . Funny about the cat. You do see some strange things in LA. Awww. I love that your daughter is learning to be fit at a young age. I hope you all enjoy your hiking adventure.
Nice running @tarun_yadavA . It's surprising how many of my running friends love carrot cake. I am taking the free one to my cousin for his birthday tomorrow. My friend made me one for my birthday or I would be keeping it.3 -
13.3 miles this morning. It just happened to be one of the hottest mornings of the summer (so far) 88F @ 6:30am

Welcome @Leigh_b! This is a good place to find people to cheer you on and help motivate you to your goal. I am very pro-recovery. I take my recovery days seriously! Sleep is a huge factor for me. I get quite a bit of sleep normally but during marathon training I was sleeping 8-9 hrs a night without fail. What do you do to aid in recovery?
@Scott6255 I have never accidentally do extra mileage on the treadmill. You must have really been into that show!
@AlphaHowls Your nephew is cute and I love the name!4 -
Welcome to you too @md_long27! Loving seeing all the new faces mid-year!quilteryoyo wrote: »I don't know how you have managed to avoid being stung all your life. It would be scary now. You never know if you are allergic until it happens. I hope you don't have to find out.
I have never been stung by a flying insect. I have to specify flying because I did get stung by that scorpion a couple of years ago. At this point I am a little afraid to be stung. What if I'm allergic and have a major reaction miles from my house? One of my brothers has been stung by all the insects. Wasps, bees, hornets, scorpions. If it stings it will find him. I guess he took all of mine too!4
