Hi, I'm new to the thread. 8 weeks ago I started my journey to health and will be down 80lbs when I reach my goal. I have list 25lbs so far, and get a little bummed when the scale sticks for a week.9

Welcome to the newcomers!

@lolitahuggins ; @mitchandsamsmom ; @Tracergirl , welcome! Please let us know what you'd like us to call you, and about where you are, so we can get to know you. We're glad you're here. Drop into any conversation you like, whenever you like, but don't feel you have to respond to them all... this thread moves very fast, so don't be surprised if it takes a bit for someone to respond to your question or comment. We are a chatty bunch! You may also get a dozen responses to a question because many of us post at the same time... We're glad you're here!
Woke up about three a.m. to thunderboomers walking across the River Valley of Arkansas. Between the thunder and the lightshow, couldn't get back to sleep. The second band is coming in now, accompanying more rain, and an intermittent bit of rain all morning, it looks like. Good thing I got the outside work done yesterday.
Hematologist nurse may call at 9:30 to discuss tests from early in the week. It's possible that the call is next Tuesday--I've got it on my calendar for both days, but the VA system says it's today. Took a look at the blood test results, and a few things are low or high, but just by very small amounts. Will wait and see what they have to say about it all. Need to remember to ask them to renew the iron I'm taking if they want me to stay on it (just reminding myself. If I write stuff down, I tend to remember better).
My husband has jury duty on Monday at 9 a.m., and the courthouse is only ten minutes away, so he will get to sleep in for three days in a row, if not more. He's usually up at 4:45 for work, and out the door at 5:15. He's got ten days' vacation left for the year and will take those as necessary, so it won't be too bad a hit to his pay. He may need those days - he's part of the jury pool until December, so this may not be the only time he's called in.
Egg is not too happy about the rain, but she will be able to go outside soon. She's napping on my end table until Corey gets up, and he'll let her out. She is a cat with very specific routines.
Later, y'all, hope it's a good day for all...
Love,
Lisa

You've seen me post the wellness wheel before.
Most of things on there relate to mental health: spiritual, social, intellectual, emotional, environmental, and even financial and occupational.
One item relates to physical health.
Physical health includes:- Physical Activity and Body Movement - body composition, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and cardiorespiratory endurance. Stand, walk around, stretch, park at the other end of the parking lot or use public transportation so you've got to walk, take the stairs, be less efficient so that you take multiple trips to put away the laundry, move the groceries, and do housework.
This is my favourite one ... I love being active. - Eat a Healthy Balanced Diet - Mediterranean, Blue Zone ... whatever's best for your heart, kidneys, diabetic tendencies, etc.
I like a diet full of fruit and veg. - Stay Hydrated - good for the brain, joints, digestion, kidney health, temperature regulation, etc.
I know I feel better when I have 2-3 tall glasses of water during my workday. - Get Adequate Sleep
I struggle with this one for a couple reasons ... I like my alone time and there's a lot to do. - Good Hygiene - washing hands, brushing teeth, cleaning and disinfecting objects we use often such as mobile phones, keys, wallets and work passes, and generally reducing the spread of illness
Speaking of which, I do need to clean my workpass and lanyard!! - Limit Alcohol and Avoid Smoking
I've never smoked and rarely drink. - Regular Health Check-ups - routine preventative care, catching problems early.

Machka: I’m well ahead on self care today 😝
After I got up and made my bed:- I wrote in my journal, composed a poem and reviewed a poem I wrote in 2008
- had a short walk, and did a dance workout video
- made/ate a good healthy breakfast, had a shower and dressed, did my hair
- folded laundry from yesterday and put it away
- went through my craft tool box to make sure I have what I need for the card making group I just joined. It’s this afternoon.
- I’m sitting now with a cup of coffee catching up with our lovely ladies.
- DH went out to a committee meeting after breakfast, and I told him how smart he looked.
- Now I’m just about to do a few games on my iPad

Exercised, listening to Dr Rangan Chatterjee while I did my mat work. About how our brain is wired to our ancient needs for food and exercise. Conserving energy was our main need. So it's not your fault if you lie on the couch all day, eating candy, and scrolling on your phone.
Then did about 400 words of writing, about how I got into painting. We are going to have a session this afternoon. I'm nervous about it, as I'm completing a picture of our dining room. I'm not optimistic.
Then chatted to G about her sister's trip. She is exhausted and relieved it is over, but could see some positive elements.
Just had lunch. Now to get the art stuff out.
Welcome new people!

Ah... that last band of lightning took out our electricity for almost an hour, and at 5:30 in the morning, it is DARK, both inside and out. Always reminds me how much we take our daily and moment-to-moment lives for granted, losing electricity for more than a few minutes. It's lighter now, and I'm able to keep writing this on my laptop, even though the power flickered off again just now long enough to take out the internet until the modem resets.
All of this reminds me, I need to get Corey to pull the generator out, make sure the gasoline hasn't soured (as well as pick up some gas conditioner for the other gas-powered equipment for the winter), and make sure it's running well. I have to have him pull it out because, in all honesty, I cannot even move the heavy thing. I think I'll ask him to set it up on casters, so I can pull it out of the shop if he's not available. I'll go pick up a moving dolly today. It's one of those things that we want working if the electricity is off for too long so that we can run power to the fridge and freezer, and to keep cellphones recharged since we don't have a landline here. Might be overkill... but still better safe than sorry.
Internet's back up... time to get moving again.
Later, y'all,
Love, Lisa in AR

Just keeping busy working and stuff, nothing real exciting. Took Loki to the vet Wed. for blood work. Bought a new grill. The one we have right now works, but it needed a new regulator. Vince found one online and installed it and now it makes a humming noise for about the first 10 minutes you put it on. It’s a Kenmore about 13 years old. Parts will be harder and harder to find. Drove to a city about 45 minutes away to save $300 so it was worth the trip.
Barbie – I’m so sorry Jake hurt his ankle AND his knee. You’ll get thru this, I know. Glad to hear Bodhi is settling in
Rosemary – sorry you have Covid
Carol – sorry to hear this but glad everything got cleared up
I understand Jerry didn’t come in to work Wednesday and today he said to me “they don’t want me to work”. Probably because he had been drinking.
Rebecca – lovely letter “from Santa”
pip – congrats on being debt free
Walked to Food Lion the other day because the gal who wrote a rain check put the full price, not the sale price on it. When I explained this to the gal, she kept insisting that it was right since the sale was still on. Huh? Finally a manager came over and after I explained it to him he said to her “she’s (meaning me) right”. You should have seen the gal take off in a huff. As if to say “the customer can’t be right, I have to be”. The manager said he’d talk to her. Honestly!
When the kids were small, every year the bathroom downstairs (where I hid the presents while I was wrapping them) mysteriously had to be locked for one reason or another – the toilet was leaking, the sink leaked, etc. Then every year miraculously Christmas day the bathroom got “fixed”. Do you know the kids never figured it out until we moved out of that house?
I miss the Y only because of their pool. They are the only ones I know around here who have an olympic size pool. Oh, I forgot, the college has one, but it doesn’t have deep water aerobics classes.
Heather – lovely home they’re building
Rebecca – big congrats on the birth
pip – why is the ride still virtual? I remember they went that way when Covid hit, but it’s not a big thing any more so why are they continuing to have it virtually? Congrats on the new bike rack. Looks real nice
Joy – so sorry about your cat. Our fur babies are such a big part of our lives. Our cat is 15 and has a seizure disorder, an anxiety disorder, and cancer. He’s getting oral chemo, but he seems happy and that’s the important thing
Finished pulling all the weeds around the pool. Next I want to put down this “ground clear” stuff. It kills EVERYTHING and I sure don’t want those weeds growing back until we put down the stones around the pool
Not sure why the pool is still getting algae in it. We cleaned the filters (were they ever dirty!). I’m wondering if we need to change the filters. Vince thinks we need to shock it. Maybe we should do both? Not a bad idea to me.
Walked to Food Lion since they; have cabbage on sale (49 cents/pound). I’ll make coleslaw in case Jess comes here this weekend. Otherwise, we will eat it. On the way home it started to rain. I swear, if we need rain, just have me walk to Food Lion. So many times it starts to rain on my way home.
Soup kitchen tomorrow. You know, I'm very surprised they haven't gotten a lot of donations of zucchini. They just got a big donation of potatoes recently. I can't get over some of the good food those people get. We get WalMart brand bread. They get Wonder bread. Only once in the (about) 13 years that I've been volunteering did I ever see something and say to myself "there's no way I'd put that in my stomach". We get Aldi brand frozen pizza, they get DiGiorno.
Michele NC
The ride being virtual has nothing to do with Covid. The virtual ride has been going on for a lot of years. All it is for is for people that are not going to the actual ride in mount vernon WA but still want to be part of the ride like me, it’s going to happen over there, I’m just not traveling there.
And another thing about being a virtual rider, we are not required to raise the minimum of $250 so we can ride. When u r at the ride, no $250? U can’t ride.
Speaking of the ride, I won’t be doing any biking spin or outside today, saving the legs for tomorrow. I’ve been mentally thinking about the route I will be taking to make 50 or even the whole 60 while I’m out on the road. I made my goal of 1000 dollars by 2 dollars so I will get my jersey mailed to me. 3 family members said they would donate but haven’t, oh well.

Good morning, ladies. Thank you for the kind words regarding my cat. She was very much loved and we miss her.
Dealing with my apples now as garden is winding down. Just have carrots and potatoes out there for a few more weeks. Made my first apple pie yesterday and it was so good. Have 5 more shells waiting to be filled and frozen. Will tackle that this afternoon.
Nice and sunny today. Enjoy!

If you are new here, please keep coming back. Don't be put off by how busy the thread is or that it seems that we all know each other. We all jumped on once and joined the conversation. Some stuff will interest you and some won't. You don't have to respond to everyone. I hope you'll find the support and encouragement that will help you on your journey.
Many of you know how much I treasure my routines. Our new puppy, Bodhi, has made huge dents in my comfortable routine and I've had to be more flexible than I have for decades. Gradually we're finding out how to do things and I am gaining flexibility. My dream of a dog wanting to go for long walks with me is still far in the future. Today we walked out the gate, to the street, around the house, and back to the gate. Baby steps are the way to success.

Heather - I really like it. I think it's got a lot of thought in it, and it's a lovely scene, all in all. Well done!
Just got off the phone with the hematology nurse, and they're pleased with my tests. They want me to add vitamin C when I take my iron to improve the absorption and get the borderline low readings back up into the normal. They will test again in four months. So things are going well regarding getting a handle on the anemia. That's one down!
Next week is the echocardiogram to see if there's been any damage from three years of AFib, and to make sure there are no clots. Will talk to the cardiologist in early October to decide whether they can do what's necessary to get my heart back to a normal rhythm.
Apparently, Crohn's is very associated with AFib. I did the research, of course, but can't find any research on the connection to surgery success rates with Crohn's as a complicating factor. Too specialized, I guess. One more question to ask the cardio when I see him in October.
Only if you're a research junkie:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6580358/#:~:text=The primary findings of our, corticosteroids, and/or biological agents : The positive relationship between the severity of IBD [including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis] and the incidence of AF [atrial fibrillation] accounts for the association between the two diseases.
In a Danish nationwide study, IBD was classified as flare-up, persistent disease, and remission based on disease activity, and the association between disease activity of IBD and the development of AF were evaluated[18]. Incidence of AF increased during IBD flare-ups and periods of persistent disease, but not during periods of remission[18] ... patients with moderate-to-severe IBD have a higher risk of AF than those with mild IBD.
My two issues were found separately, which is apparently quite common. For mine, the AFib was found by my primary care doc, and the gastroenterologists found what they thought was ulcerative colitis and have now decided is Crohn's. According to that study, the Crohn's may well have caused the AFib.

Hello ladies!
Heather that is another lovely painting. It looks like such a pretty, cozy space.
Lisa you do a great job keeping up with all the medical stuff! Glad you are doing better these days.
I just took my dad out to get him new Hoka sneakers for his walking. The podiatrist said his forefoot pad is getting thinner, and he had slight pain, so hope this will help. They were pricey, but should last him a year. I still do a lot of my exercise barefoot, or with very light cycling shoes. My feet are hard to fit, and a poorly fit shoe is worse than none, I find.
I'm waiting for Amazon to deliver my next batch of books. Anticipation - remember the song? It's making me wait.

Lisa--When I and DH were called for jury duty we were paid our regular wages and then the court sent like $75 a day. So we were never out of wages.
Heather--I think your painting is very well done.
Well am glad it is Friday and I have the weekend off, no plans other than church on Sunday. It has cooled down to the high 80's so not so bad being outside.

Welcome! My family grew up in the outskirts of Portland, Oregon and my mom was a canner, and pickler queen. We would put a pies worth of whatever berries and freeze those in bags so it was really easy for mom to toss with flour, spices and toss in a pie crust. I would say 35% of our food came from the freezer, 20% came from the canned jars, and during the summer it was freezer/garden. Good memories. Enjoy your pie day!

Joy - sorry your fur baby ran out of lives. You have other kitties? Crossing fingers the weather cooperates and your DH can get the harvest done. It's always a relief when the equipment is put away for the season. Frost already.... I wonder if we'll have any by the end of September, seems like the apples and other berries were real early this year. I saw 2 praying mantis on the house last week, they are normally later too as I recall.
Machka - you are doing a great job keeping active.
Heather - love that painting - I recognized that scene from photos you have shared. I bet you amaze yourself sometimes. That's the beauty of art, isn't it?
Lisa - I like your mom's recipe I wonder if peppermint schnapps would do the same thing?
I scanned through the link you posted re Afib and IBS. I noticed some good news : Advancing age is a well-known risk factor for AF[31]. Surprisingly, however, in our study, the association between IBD to the development of AF gradually weakened with increasing age. Amazing how our systems can be interconnected. Good luck with the Echo next week.
My next project will be elderberry syrup. I have berries ripening but I'm going to take the easy way out right now and buy some organic dried berries. There are lots of recipes online. When I had the Crud last September, my doc said take elderberry. Luckily I had some tablets on hand. Might throw some berries in a ziploc and put them in the freezer to thaw and cook down later. Hate to miss an opportunity here.
A beautiful day here. Sunny, but chilly enough to need a sweater. My favorite time of year. Keeping the girls in for another hour to see if Fairy is going to give me a brown egg. Would hate to have her deposit it out in the back yard somewhere while she's on her walkabout.

Lanette,
My BFF has loads of elderberry, but climates are different and hers are ready to be picked in the heat of August, so she always cleans and freezes the berries and then we drag the bags out before the holidays (so she has freezer room) and make elderberry syrup, jam and sometimes cordial. I love the sweet/tart/berry flavor.

Yes, Lisa, I was surprised he had to take holiday for jury duty.
I'm in two minds about my painting. It's not what I had in my mind when I started, so I might try another one in a freeer style. I love inside/outside paintings. So cozy and homely and somehow hopeful. I would like to try it without drawing first and attempt something more post-impressionist.
It is growing on me though!
Had a quick chat with L. She is going on a driving tour of Ireland next week with her sister and hasn't thought about insurance and rescue for her car. She was trying to find information and someone to talk to.
We had the rest of the Goulash tonight. Better than ever! Fresh peas. DH had macaroni. Crême Fraiche.
A tiny bit cooler today, thank goodness. Should be over by Monday.

Heather - Your friend might talk to her credit card company if that's what she's using for the rental car. Here, most CC's support the insurance and some provide roadside assistance.
Unfortunately, by federal law, if you miss work due to jury duty, companies are not required to provide your regular pay. The small, family-owned company he works for does not. Also here, the county pays $50 per day that you're required to be available for a jury, so he opted to receive that at the end of the term, which is December. It will be a nice addition to the budget at that point.
