more rain, chair yoga, a short walk in drizzle, scale back up, carpal tunnel slightly better, tried to eat less, finished a book by Rick Steves about his hippie days trip to India (lots of long hair and sideburns).

Overcast today with a chance of a thunderstorm this afternoon. Still bringing my tomato plant in and out of the house. Time to get it out into the garden as I can see it is starting to struggle. Quite a big plant so I'm sure it is lacking nutrients in it's small container.
Been thinking about my upcoming trip next month. Will have to be careful with my meals. Going to try to get at least a morning walk in each day which is very doable when I look at the itinerary. Doesn't look like any early morning departures so a 20 minute daily walk will be part of my routine. As for meals I think most are menu choices from local restaurants along with buffet breakfast at our hotel stays. The trip is nine days of eating out. Will not be taking my usual plane snack on my trip (cheezies)!

I wrote a post yesterday but I must not have hit "submit"!
The book mentioned is highly talked about in my daughter's circle of friends. I have read one of her books but not this one. It sounds like you will enjoy it. Rick Steve's book sounds very interesting as well. I love to read and am hooked on Nordic mysteries.
I read back to earlier posts and it is interesting how we are going through the same things. I'm so happy for you that your mammograms have been cleared - it is stressful. I got called back for next Friday for the second time and the dialogue was the same as what I'm hearing you ladies received. It does concern me that they made an appointment immediately yet I thank heaven for meditation and mindful breathing which is keeping me level headed.
My weight went back down one pound and although I'm happy about that, I really am working on not letting weight determine if I have a good or bad day.
I'm seriously thinking about the van life and that will take about a year to make it happen, my biggest obstacle is clearing out my house. I don't want to share the idea with my family because it seems such a lofty goal and I feel safe saying it here. My kids are real teasers and I just don't want to hear it if I end up not making it happen! There is no downside to it though because in the end, my house will have less clutter!
I'm going to grandson's soccer game, a movie, and further packing as I will head out to CO next weekend. Do you ladies get any type of break from the long weekend?

@Joy1580vb Where are you going on your trip?
0 -
363days I'm taking an escorted bus tour of Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton. Went on a Newfoundland Labrador tour last year with the same tour company and it was wonderful. Good job on your weight loss!
What does van life consist of? Are you planning on travelling the country in a van?
I enjoy reading Rick Steves travel comments also. He is so knowledgeable.
0 -
Joy1580vb - Oh, that trip sounds just wonderful! I have looked at these areas online and they are just beautiful! I have always wanted to go there. I love to travel and that is one reason I'm looking at Van life. I bought a travel trailer 3 years ago and used it 4 times but then Jen got sick and it has been parked since then. I really like it but parks have gotten expensive and hard to get spots. With a van I can just pull up and park in a regular parking space. There are so many places I've not seen in the US and I'm eager to do so without spending a lot.
A second reason to do this is because I haven't saved hardly anything for retirement and I want to build on that savings. I will either sell my house or rent it. I currently work remotely as a recruiter so I can go anywhere with my hotspot and still do my job.
Rick Steve's puts the travel bug in me!

I love to travel too and have been on quite a few trips. Most have been escorted bus tours with the exception of a river cruise (The Rhine) and a couple of caribbean ocean cruises. Have been to Europe a few times. Hubby used to travel with me but with a hip issue finds it too difficult so I go myself and find the escorted tours a safe way to travel and always enjoy meeting with fellow travellers.
We used to have a motor home quite a few years ago and loved travelling around Canada with the kids and usually a dog in tow. It was so convenient to just be able to pull off somewhere so I know what you mean by the travel trailers.
Just waiting for the grass to dry up a bit before going for my walk with the dogs. Had a little shower this morning.

I love to travel too. Not as adventurous as Mr. Steves in this book, though. But no spoilers.
Cape Breton has the most beautiful beaches. I loved it there.
It would be quite daunting for me to move to a van even though we have been decluttering. But it sounds like you would be happy so go for it. There is a lot to see!
i still have to wait five weeks for my followup but both doctors say if it seemed urgent they would have pushed the time up. Still stressful to wait.I am beginning to think it is monsoon season here. Messing with my step count.

Melody, I'm sure it is a routine exam for you as I doubt they would have you wait for so long if they suspected anything amiss. My mammogram is a routine once a year event and is a follow up due to breast cancer treatment that I went through ten years ago. Good to get checked out once a year and sounds like your doctor is on top of things.
Doing some yard work today. I find my weed trimmer quite heavy so just doing a bit at a time. I like using the battery operated one as it is easier to get around the trees further from the house. The electric one is lighter but a pain to deal with a long cord.
Enjoy your day.

yes better to be safe than sorry with our bodies.
We went to a garden store today that has the most amazing show garden. Meticulous, verdant and healthy plants all over. It is uplifting to go there.
That was between the drops—we then had more rain that finally stopped after dinner. I managed to plant some tomatoes and one hydrangea. Tomorrow should be better.
I am not one for lugging power tools around either!

It sounds like we are all getting a lot of rain! It poured and poured until about noon here, and then the sun came out and it was a lovely day. Will Rogers had a famous saying "If you don't like the rain in Oklahoma, wait a minute, it will change". That is so true!
I rode my electric bike down a trail that I had ridden years before but I was concerned about the homeless along the trail so I've avoided it. A friend told me it wasn't bad now so I decided to give it a try. The air felt so fresh and good. I felt the trail was a little too secluded for me and and although I had no trouble, I probably won't do it by myself again.
I took my 15year old dog for a walk and she always livens up at the prospect of a walk. She's my travel buddy.
Yesterday I took 4 kitchen trash bags of pots, pans and lids to Goodwill. Wow, I had no idea I had that much stuff that was needless! I still have things to donate and I feel so good releasing these things.
Yes, I really like the outdoors and like the idea of taking a year to check out parks, etc. I'd love to go to Canada when I feel better about Border Crossings.
I agree, Melody, that if it looked dangerous they wouldn't be letting you wait that long. I would be a little nervous about doing mine so soon except they have had me do this before with a quick turn-around and so this seems routine. They have also just built a new center and it is very easy to get an appointment quickly.
Tomorrow I'm walking with a friend and then coffee. It looks like heavy rains again after 1 so we will be getting it in early.

Morning, ladies. Hope you are doing well.
Mowed the lawn this morning. Took about an hour and a half. Is quite a large area (I would guess about 1 1/2 acres) and it was so dusty. Took a shower as soon as I finished. We have had a couple of days with scattered showers but it really hasn't amounted to much so still very dry here. I checked my garden and nothing is up yet. Going to get my tomato plant into the garden and will probably do that this afternoon. Need to protect it a bit as it is quite windy again.
Was down just a fraction of a pound this morning but happy with that. Have changed MFP settings to 40% protein, 30% carbs and 30% fat. Kept my calorie count at 1280. Trying to eat less carbs and more protein but struggling with that. My typical supper is a piece of meat or fish, potato, veggie and salad. Have changed that and now just have the meat or fish along with a mixed green salad. Usually the salad has veggies in it like cauliflower, broccoli, carrots. Think that is plenty.

such weird weather! Cold and drizzle, threatening clouds, then sun. Finally got a walk in along the canal. Bought pepper plants.
scale does not like me, trying to be mindful of food.I would rather bicycle on a trail than the road but trails are not easy to get to.
Joy, you are doing so well with food!

Good you were able to get your walk in. Haven't done mine yet but will after lunch. Got my tomato planted out in the garden. Made a mistake buying such a big plant as I know the smaller ones transplant much better. Still have to go out and put a couple of stakes in. Looks like 3 separate stems that will need to be supported. Went to town and got my covid shot so will be good now until the fall. Asked the pharmacist what is recommended for my age bracket and she said twice a year.
Stopped for a few groceries and got items for salad along with cottage cheese and some greek yoghurt. So much sugar in yoghurt but this one isn't too bad…..4 grams per serving. Will add some frozen raspberries in it for a bit more flavour. Should be good for my evening snack. I added it into my food log for the day and it gives my protein level a nice boost. Still going over on carbs and under on protein….it is definitely a learning curve in all of this.

it is hard to go low on carbs! Requires a lot of planning. I am not good at it.
Took a break today and hiked out in the woods near a lake. It was so beautiful we did the whole out and back—8 miles. Just perfect weather for once. Glued to the couch now, though. Had not walked that much in quite a while.
I think here they say once a year on the shot. Hoping they get that combined flu/covid shot going soon. But who knows with the current situation?
1 -
That is a very long walk! Good for you. Didn't do my walk today as got really tired in the afternoon. Didn't nap but just took it easy. Think it was a reaction to the shot.
Decided to go back to my balanced eating plan and just try to be mindful of the type of carbs I am eating. I'm going with what Diabetics Canada suggest which is on average 45 grams of carbs for your 3 meals (each) with no more than 15 carbs for each of your 2 snacks. I am well within that range. I know protein is harder on the kidneys and don't want to have issues in that regard.
Have been hearing an owl in the evenings which sounded close by. This morning it was in the bush next to our house and hit the living room window. Surprised it didn't break the glass. Hubby went out and it was laying on the grass but a few minutes later took off flying. Looks like it's ok.
0 -
poor owl! We had a grosbeak hit a window years ago. Put it in a shoebox for a few minutes and it was fine.
0 -
I saw the owl later in the day. Still close to the house and it flew off into the trees but heard it hooting last night. Have bird stickers on the windows but occasionally we still get bird strikes. Have lowered the shades on the living room windows to about half way as I was reading that can help.
Going to be hot today (+29C) so getting my outside walking in this morning and going out to the garden area to tackle a patch of thistle that appeared along one side. Hopefully get that under control. Nothing up in my garden yet.
Enjoy your day.

It was good to catch up with what you guys have been doing. Joy, I hope to have your discipline in the future. For now, I'm just trying to stay communicating because it seems when I'm not losing weight I pull out of being connected. I gained 3 pounds from holiday eating and then lost it in 2 days so it was just salt and excess, but it got me down. Reading the chats have helped me lower my expections and if I lose 10-12 pounds in a year - that's fantastic!!!
An owl - how lovely! I read about the spiritual meaning of animals and owl has several. One of the ones I really like is "protection and guidance during times of testing". Surprisingly, there is an owl in my neighborhood, in the city of 400k, that I hear from time to time. One day I looked out of my back window and I had a hawk perched on my fence. I am close to a river and I think that is why I get so lucky.
Melody, what a fantastic walk! I could almost envision it. I hope you guys will attach pictures, I'd love to see them.
I'm a little stressed as I will start a new project on Monday. I've been unemployed for 3 years and coming back at 71 makes me feel a little intimidated. I'm working as a contractor for a company I really expect and I have to remind myself I've been a recruiter for 20+ years - I know this stuff. Where I feel somewhat inadequate is the computer stuff and I'm my worst enemy.
Headed to Colorado on Friday to get my son's house ready for sale. I can't wait - it is already hot in OK!!! Our plants almost burn to death and you have to be here to put up shade, water more, etc., to have a garden. I admire you both for this!

Not the best pic but this is a teeny Finger Lake and things are really this green here.
Raining again this afternoon but I got a lot of yard work in this morning and managed an hour walk.
I think any weight loss is a plus. Unfortunately that is not happening for me right now.
Sometimes I wonder about going back to work part time but I dunno. I do miss some of my old co-workers.

It looks like you have a good camera - it really captured the clouds. It's very pretty. We have many lakes in OK, I am within a 45 minute drive of 3, and an hour and 15 minutes from a fourth and 5th. We also have a nice river walk.
I have enjoyed working again and I would really like it if it was part-time. This company tends to only do FT. It has given me structure and I seem to be getting just as much done!
On my way to get my 3D Mammogram…fingers crossed for good results.
1 -
Good luck with your mammogram.
I retired 10 years ago at 65 and had 47 years working as administrative support. Started with the oil industry (secretary to a director) and then moved to our farm and got employment with our provincial government so ended up with good benefits including pensions when I retired. I do remember the old machines that we worked with at that time…telex machine, typewriters, gestetner and then on to the first computers that came out using floppy disks. So many memories and so many changes in technology over the years.
Windy and hot again today. The owl that I mentioned earlier is a Barred Owl and I think it may be nesting in our yard. The biggest owl I saw in our yard was a couple of years ago in the wintertime. It was a big, beautiful snowy owl also known as the arctic owl. I'm sorry I didn't take a picture of it. It was perched in a tree close to our garage…sat for about 5 minutes and then flew off.
Beautiful pic, Melody. Nice to see the areas you are walking in.
Just popped back in as I was reading about the Snowy Owls and they are now listed as vulnerable to global extinction. Hopefully they won't disappear. Such a stunning bird.

yes good luck with your test today.
I think a bit more structure sounds appealing. I do a lot but I have to structure it myself.
Birds are fascinating and beautiful. There is a place around here called Owl Woods that has barred owls nesting in early spring. We went once and only saw them because others pointed them out. Very small and well camouflaged.
We have a hold placed on a dogwood to replace our lost crabapple.0 -
The barred owls we have here are about 24 inches in length with a 40 inch wingspan and weigh about 2 pounds. The one that hit the window was on the larger size. Left an imprint so I see I need to give the window a wash down.
Smokey here due to wildfires further north in Alberta plus ones burning in Saskatchewan. Finally cooled down last night.
I have a dogwood. Very hardy here and withstands our harsh winters. The one I have has white flowers but I think there are other varieties. Good choice.

I have heard that some of that smoke has made it to Illinois.
They delivered the tree earlier than expected so we spent quite a while getting it situated and protected. Thus, no walk. Lots of yardwork was also done this morning.
0 -
Nice you have your tree in place.
Went to the local dump this morning with our garbage. Fire ban is in place so can't burn anything. We wouldn't burn anyway as it is too dry. Not too much on the agenda for today as another hot smokey one. May transplant a cherry tomato I have in a pot by the house. Doesn't look like it is doing well so thinking about putting it out into the garden.
Got my travel documents for my upcoming trip. Leaving here by bus to the airport on June 20th and flying out the next day. Did a trial run on my new Travelpro carry on bag and looks like it can hold quite a bit. I'm a minimal packer so will probably be ok with just that bag and a smaller foldable backpack as my personal item. Airlines are getting stricter with carry on luggage.

I am sure you will have a lot of fun on your trip! What are some of the places you will stop?
More rain today. Did stuff around the house and only a teeny walk.

Reading about the owls that you both have seen sounds so lovely. It always seems a little magical to me, I've never seen a snowy owl-what a treat.
I used to work in the oil and gas industry and I thoroughly enjoyed it; I was a revenue accountant.
Good news about my mammogram - there is nothing concerning although it took many pictures and two people, one pushing me into the machine, to get the results. It turns out, there are some lesions on the outside of my skin and due to their thorough pictures, they could tell it wasn't on the inside.
I made it to CO and am a little overwhelmed with getting the 990 sq ft house ready for sale within a week, while working full time. I'm literally going to make a schedule today to break it down iin bite size pieces. My son had a great interview by zoom for Cleveland, Ohio and it looks like he will be moving there, which is a good thing. It will still be a couple of months before he is able to take the dogs with him so when he leaves I will be going back to Tulsa and we will turn the house over to a realtor if it hasn't sold. And then….it will be up to me to decide the direction I go with my future. You both sound so settled and I still feel like I'm 16, deciding who I want to be when I grow up - haha.
I'm really focusing on daily walks and eating well with a goal to lose 10 pounds in a month. I know this is aggressive and I'll be kind to myself whatever happens.
0 -
363days Happy to hear that your mammogram was clear. Sounds like you have a very busy schedule. Good luck with the house sale and all that entails. Nice to hear that things are falling into place for your son.
Melody my trip includes 2 nights each in Halifax, Charlottetown and Cape Breton and 1 more night in Halifax. I booked a pre-night in Halifax as I wanted to explore the area a bit on my own. Have booked a deep sea fishing trip (2 hours) the day after I arrive as I have the day free until a meet/greet at 8:00 pm. Also taking a harbour cruise on a tall sailing vessel later that day. It is billed as a sailing vessel but I think it is just a touristy vessel. It has sails but also motorised so not truly a sail boat. It's a 2 hour cruise also and goes outside the harbour area so should be some interesting views. They both leave from the Halifax boardwalk area which is walking distance from the hotel. Halifax also has a 16 acre public garden that is within walking distance of my hotel too. I'm hoping to be able to see that on the day I arrive. Will probably get to the hotel at around 6:00 pm so it may be doable in the evening after I have supper. Will depend on weather and how tired I am.
I don't have very much free time when on the tour as the days seemed to be packed with site seeing and events which is good.
0 -
the trip sounds lovely! Halifax is such a nice town. I remember a good fort and a great maritime museum. It is nice to just walk around the town.
363, happy about your mammogram! I have a month to go.
Beautiful day here. I walked around the neighborhood and spent the afternoon at the eye doctor.
