JULY 2024 Monthly Running Challenge

My July Goal is 3 days per week, which I am keeping to:
1 July - 1.7mi/2.74km
3 July- 1.8mi/2.89km
5 July - 1.88mi/3.02km
7 July - 1.84mi/2.96km
10 July - 1.79/2.86km
12 July - 1.88mi/3.02km
14 July - 1.93mi/3.1km
17 July - 1.84mi/2.96km
Total so far 14.66mi/23.55km.14 July - 5 minutes walk, 10 minutes ‘easy pace’ plus optional 5, 5 minutes walk, 1.93mi/3.1km. HR av 128, max 158 (Z5 1%, Z4 14%, Z3 28%, Z2 20%) but forgot to wear my chest HR band (just my Garmin watch). Looped twice round an unfamiliar village with few road signs - I had to stop and check my phone map on the first loop as I thought I’d missed a turn, and despite that, achieved my fastest 1mi… huh?
16 July - woke up thinking it was a run day, but it was another rest day… and felt a little disappointed!
17 July - 5 minutes walk, 10 minutes ‘easy pace’ plus optional 5, 5 minutes walk, 1.84mi/2.96km. HR av 134, max 166 (Z5 4%, Z4 26%, Z3 30%, Z2 10%). Early run (fasted) to fit it in before yoga and heading off in the car to a meeting: I am trying to remember to keep it easy instead of pushing the PB’s!
My PR’s:
1k: 7:03
1m: 11:38
5k: 48:04
Longest run - 5.18mi/8.36km
Some interesting data from Garmin on my first 12 sessions - HR and cadence and cadence and pace - in the spoiler below. I think there’s some improvement happening!6 -

I felt a little burnt out and slow, but it was about the same pace as yesterday.
This is so interesting! I have the same problem, as the data doesn’t always seem to match up with how it feels. Weird!

Hey, look at that last run! I thought I might be developing a mild uti. Went to gp, turns out my kidneys were already unhappy. Yeah, it started early last week. Compared to many I don't really get strong symptoms. Anyway, took first antibiotic pill this morning, and I'm already feeling much better.8 -

Hi everyone!
Completed an early morning 9km run and was shocked to see I was finished before 8 . I was feeling sore and not ready to challenge myself again right after my long run, so I did an easy recovery run, instead of speedwork, and am planning on doing speedwork tomorrow. My run was pleasant, and I did exactly what @ContraryMaryMary said- got up, got moving, and woke up eventually .
179.5/200km for July.7 -
@martaindale - I am loving all your pictures in Japan! your family looks great and what an awesome adventure for all of you. I wish cities in the US made more use of green areas large and small and incorporated them into all areas for people to enjoy.
@Scott6255 - I hope your legs are feeling better and that it was just them needing to be rolled out or maybe a bit of dehydration. The worst cramp I ever had was a result of it being hot and humid and me not hydrating well enough. I could barely walk (hobble) home.
@tarun_yadavA - last I saw the train from LA to Vegas was still going through some environmental and other battles but is still being planned for. They want to utilize the median area between the two sides of the freeway for the rails and that requires federal approval in addition to all the local and state requirements. It is expected to open sometime in 2027. Also it won't actually go into LA. The station will be in Apple Valley - about 90 miles away.
There is also supposed to be a bullet train between LA and SF. Parts of it are already under construction and I believe all of it has received the final approvals. Phase 1 will come out to where I live in Anaheim but it may just tie into the current metro trains that run from downtown LA to Anaheim. It is also supposed to go south to San Diego and north to Sacramento in later phases which would be awesome.
Vegas and gambling... I am not a gambler and I do not like Vegas. My DH loves it though he isn't a big gambler either. We have attended conferences there several times. We did see Celine there (for my birthday) and loved it. She put on an amazing show. We also saw Willie Nelson in a very small up close theater and it was fantastic. We were hosted by a friend/software vendor during one of the conferences. Probably one of the best concerts I have attended.
Oh also we stopped in Tahoe on our honeymoon and I played roulette and won enough money to pay for our entire honeymoon. I know the odds aren't good but they were definitely in my favor that night.
Lots of doctor visits and changes to treatments so I haven't gotten out much. We had agility class on Monday after all my appts and I was able to run all the courses with Hobbes. I got a good bit of walking on the walking pad yesterday and did a Peloton strength class. This morning more appts so taking a rest day and will get back to it tomorrow when I have nothing else scheduled.

@tarun_yadavA Maybe something you want to see, but I think boxing may be a little extreme if your lady is not into it...at least with Celine you can look at her if you don't like the music. Can't really escape blood and hitting at a boxing match. So, I say NO.
You are doing great in the heat @kgirlhart . I second the thought that I'm glad there was no internet when I was a teenage either. I don't think I would have fared well.
Congrats on your fastest mile @AmunahSki . You are doing great.
Great running @yirara . Glad you went to the doctor and started the antibiotics before it got worse.
Great early morning run @Laurz9191 .
@shanaber That's cool that you won enough money to pay for your entire honeymoon. You are doing great. I hope you get some good news from all of the tests.3 -

34.25/60.00 goal
Packed up this morning and Tippy and I headed out about 11 for the first leg of our trip. We got to SC about 4:30. It was around 93F (33.9C) when we got here, so I rested a few minutes and then did a treadmill session. I walked 5 min at 3.8 mph, then ran/walked for 3/2 min at 4.5-5.0/4.0 mph, then walked 5:26 min at 3.8 mph.
Tippy really loves road trips. She loves the beds and gets to sleep with me when we're traveling. She doesn't even try when we are at home.

I added another 5 miles to my monthly goal this morning. It was 72F but sprinkled rain every now and then which felt fabulous. We are really dry and in need of rain, so no complaints here! (Please send more @ContraryMaryMary!)
Glad you got the antibiotics and are feeling better @yirara.
Tippy does look pretty happy @quilteryoyo! I hope you make it to FL safe and sound today.
@shanaber – Are you enjoying the Peloton workouts? During the pandemic they provided a free subscription for anyone interested (I believe you told us about it) and I really enjoyed the classes that I did. They had quite a lot of to choose from if I recall correctly.

Neighborhood 1.03 Mile (at 14"55 pace). 79 day streak.
I did the "wake up by running" today. I was out the door :10 mins after my alarm went off.- It was cool, 64 °F
- I loath running around cars and there were far fewer
- I felt 10x heavier
- It ended up being very slow
- Upon finishing I fear I have to do nothing for an hour or so until I'm cool enough to suit up and start my day.

Hi everyone!
I did my interval run this morning. I thought about bailing after my first 400, because I didn’t hit my split and felt slow, but kept going and gave it what I had. Even though most of my splits were a bit over what I had planned, I got it done and was proud that I didn’t give up on myself. It ended up being a really nice run which Garmin rewarded by chancy training status to Productive .
When doing intervals I usually just guess distance and don’t see my elapsed distance and figured I had run between 13 and 14 km. I was shocked when I stopped my watch at the end and saw I had run 18.1km without water or fuel (even though I had brought both with me) and felt great! I don’t think it’s ever happened that I ran that much more more than I thought I had and I don’t anticipate it happening again but it was nice. Maybe I was still asleep for part of the run?
197.6/200km for July.
@quilteryoyo Enjoy your road trip. It does look like Tippy is having fun!7 -

I have that problem. Sometimes even after a shower, I'm still sweating. Luckily, our locker room has this huge industrial type fan that helps. It doesn't do a lot for my hair style but it does cool me off!

Nice run this evening.
On Celine vs boxing, I choose the boxing. I’ve never been to Vegas. It doesn’t have any appeal for me maybe because of all the Mob films I’ve watched and ‘bodies buried in the dessert’. My sister got married there in 2003. Another sister visited a few years ago and loved it.6 -
Started back with strength training on Tuesday. However, yesterday, that delayed onset muscle soreness kicked in big time, which limited me to a little over 2 miles. Ugh! Today, I do strength training again. Hoping the body gets back used to doing strength training. Total Mileage: 23.4/50.7

Nice run @Teresa502 . Thank you. I did make it to FL safe and sound.
Great job trying to get up and wake up running @chris_in_cal . Doesn't sound like it went real well though. Maybe it takes more than once. On the rare occasions that I run early, I too have to wait 30 min to cool before I can take a shower and get on with my day. But, if I wait an hour before running and then an hour after.....
Thanks @Laurz9191 . Great run! It's exciting that you ran so much further than you thought you had!
@steviebee888 I hope your DOMS are better tomorrow. I'm sure once you are consistent with the strength training again it will be better.

We made it to the Bed and Breakfast in FL about 3:30. The drive was pretty uneventful - lots of slow traffic in Jacksonville and a heavy downpour/storm around 2:45, but I've seen worse. All in all, it was a great day for driving.
After it quit raining....well, it was still drizzling... Tippy and I did a fast mile walk. Then I drove up to a local legendary pizza place and got 2 slices to go for dinner. Then, Tippy and I took a stroll on the beach. She really loves the beach and sand, just don't even ask her to go into the water. LOL
Tippy after our fast walk.
Bizzaro's Pizza For you @taran_yadavA .
Love the sea grass

Missed yesterday’s run so headed out for a hour today while my daughter was at ballet. Nice run but was a bit quick so I’ll probably pay for that at Parkrun tomorrow.5
-
Hi everyone!
My DH begged me not to get up early to run but sleep in, as we are driving to France 🇫🇷 later. I woke up as early as I would have to run anyway, but forced myself to finish getting ready first before heading out for a really easy recovery 6km. The drive is like 14 hours, so quite a marathon itself.
203.6/200km for July.5 -
Morning all
Got in 4.72 at 10"30. Hot out there!
@quilteryoyo glad you're having fun in FL! 😊 Nice pizza pic!
@Laurz9191 enjoy France! 😊 ... What's a DH?
@chris_in_cal @Mari33a yes!!! Thank you! Haha.4 -
@quilteryoyo Tippy looks happy frolicking on the beach! Glad you are having a good time.
@chris_in_cal impressive you got out the door 10 minutes after waking up. I'm sure it wasn't pleasant, but kudos for giving it a try.
@Laurz9191 you are really killing it! Hope you and your husband have a good time in France.
I woke up and decided to do a 5 mile TM run this morning and I had no pain Hopefully that can continue when I can get back outside. Busy this weekend, so no long run planned.
6 -
@ContraryMaryMary I hope Park run goes better than expected and you beat the kid again.
@Laurz9191 Enjoy your trip and drive safely.
Thanks @tarun_yadavA . Good job getting out and doing what you could after an indulgent evening.
Thanks @Scott6255 . I'm glad you had no pain on the treadmill. Hopefully taking a break from the long run will help.2 -
Forgot my Japan update yesterday.
After my last run update we had a fun day. We ended up back at the shrine that my run went through. It was a really pretty place and I didn't get to spend a lot of time there so I was happy to go back.
We also made our own bento boxes for lunch. Our last stop was teiko drumming. We got a lesson from a professional teiko drummer who somehow got 40 people who had never done this before to learn a routine and perform it in unison, or at least close enough. It was such a fun experience!
Then we switched hotels the next day. Along the way we visited the Fushima Inari shrineAnd visited a monestary where we had a traditional Buddhist monk meal .
After lunch we visited a sumo training center and learned about sumo wrestling. There were a couple of wrestlers there that did a demonstration of the training they participate in and wrestled a few matches to show us how it's done. We even got to walk up on the douyo, which is the ring.
Now we're in the mountains. I'll pick up the travel log when I update my runs.7 -
July total: 46.6/100 miles

7/14: 6.1 miles
7/17: 3.2 miles
7/19: 4 miles
New hotel, new area to run. We are in Takayama now, which is in the mountains. I had time for a short run before a very busy day. I basically ran the roads around the hotel and into some of the adjacent residential and farming areas. There is a lot of rice farming here. It was challenging because of the hills and the increase in elevation but the weather was a bit cooler. Still in the low 70's but a few degrees along with a drop in humidity makes a big difference.
We did a bike around Takayama later in the morning. Again, so grateful for the cooler temps.
Then we did a tasting tour of some local foods and sake. We also did a craft project, making a doll this area is known for called a sarubobo. I already packed mine up but I'll pull it out at some point as we prepare to go home and I'll take a picture of it.
We had dinner at a local restaurant famous for hida beef, which is from this area. I don't eat beef so can't say much about that but my chicken was delicious. Both the chicken and the beef were cut very thin and you cooked it yourself over these little individual grills.
No run tomorrow as we are switching hotels again tomorrow and heading to Tokyo. We get to take another bullet train!7 -

Happy Friday all! Hope the Crowdstrike/Microsoft debacle didn't affect anyone.
I have a family reunion tomorrow so I did my long run before work this morning. We got some rain yesterday and it really cooled things down. The temperature was great at 64F at the start with low humidity.
For those of you who track your runs on both Garmin and Strava, do you notice a significant difference in the pace Garmin gives you vs the pace that Strava gives you? For example, today Strava said my pace was 11:52/mile while Garmin said it was 11:58/mile. Yesterday, was a bigger difference. Strava was 10:54/mile while Garmin was 11:03/mile.
Love the beach and Tippy photos @quilteryoyo!
@Laurz9191 – What part of France are you visiting?
Glad you didn’t have any pain on your run this morning @Scott6255. Maybe your legs just needed a little rest.
@martaindale – what a cute and scrumptious looking bento box! (Not so sure about the monks meal.) The drumming sounds fun. Takayama is beautiful!
