I thought of all of you yesterday when I did the first "Sweatin' to the Oldies" workout. It was so much fun. It would have been even more fun if we had all been doing it together.  It could have been called "Sweatin' with the doggies" Brandy and Sasha wanted to dance with me.

B.G. go ahead and rant away about your grandson. We have a bunch of grandchildren who are like that, too. I'm so glad you updated your ticker to show how much weight you've lost. We all need to know about that. Even if you didn't lose this week, your doctor will know how far you've come.

Jeffrey, I'm so glad to hear about Joe's arrival at your house and about the "free cat"----about 25 years ago I got a kitten from the humane society and they asked me to fill out a questionnaire and one of the questions was about how much I thought it would cost to feed and care for a cat for a year. Fortunately I'd brought a friend with me and she reminded me about immunizations and other vet expenses or all I would have calculated was the cost of food.

Beth--congrats on your moderation with holiday treats
glad there were treats for you.

Sandy, your exercise plan sound exhausting, too. Brandy and Sasha send licks and snuggles to Freeway.

Elli--your family dinner at the Italian buffet sounds great---you're right that it's not just about the food---someone said that a successful dinner party is less about what's on the table and more about what's in the chairs. The little red car is a 1999 Mazda Miata---we bought third hand in January after 15 months of the "one car experiment" I'm so glad to hear that the cow is gone. Have fun on your dog walks.

Marie, our cats are indoor/outdoor but they are like small children, they play outside for hours, then ask to be let in to use the litter box then want to go back out.

Phoebe, we travel with our two cats in the motorhome. When we park, they love to sleep on the dash where they can enjoy the sun and wake up and look out the window. When we drive, one hides under the bedspread and the other hides under the couch. We'll be in Yakima for a week this summer.

Gayla, glad Neil is better. Best wishes for healthier times.

Time for more water :drinker: :drinker: :drinker: :drinker:
Big hugs to all

    Hi all,

I was going to you that we'd be in Yakima this summer but my bride beat me to it, Oh well it's hard to get respect when you've become a skinny old man. About 18 years ago or so I quit smoking, I was great for about six months, of course I gained about fifty pounds because I replaced ice cream for nicotine, then a brilliant idea struck me. I'm a good source for brilliant ideas you know, I just instinctively knew that if I only smoked cigars and not cigarettes then I'd be all right and would get back down a more rational weight. All went well until the second night when someone offered me some French Vanilla, well I was raised a gentleman - call people sir and ma'am - so turning him down seemed rude. I knew Barbie didn't like the smoke, but after all when met I smoked so going back to it shouldn't be a big thing. Well, there I am enjoying my ice cream along with the mandatory hot fudge and whipped cream thinking about the cigar that I was going to enjoy in a bit; "oh what a good boy am I." Of course I didn't become a skinny cigar smoker I became a fat cigar smoker and rationalized it by claiming that no one ever got arrested for fat driving.

I haven't smoked in a while now, thank G-d, and am finally achieving my goal of being a skinny old man. I don't know why I told you that little gem of useless information, I guess I just wanted to and I am really getting to know and like you guys.

Jake- Hang in there. I have quit too. I loved my smokes and cigars. Nothing was any better. But I can tell the difference without them. And the money saved is nice too! Good to hear from you. By the way, quitting the smoking was the (and still is) the toughest thing I have ever done. I am rooting for you!

Sandy, I looked at your profile and what lovely pictures. Is that Freeway he looks like such a darling. Also is this your back yard you were telling us about? That is so pretty.

You all sound so happy today. What a cool bunch.

Jake I am an X smoker too. for 20 years and Jerry and I quit about 20 years ago. I tried so many times to quit and when Jerry quit he quit buying my cigeretts and I refuse to buy my own. So there was nothing to do but quit. We also gave up drinking beer too. We were regular honkey tonkers .

Thanks for giving me something to read. you guys.

Good afternoon to you all. We have had a lovely sunshiny day with the temperature at 61F. Just a few sketchy little bits of snow in my yard but the grass is beginning to green up. I have a library book that is due back so I will have to get some reading done today. I noticed that Dave's book is by the door ready to be returned so it reminded me. I have enjoyed the talk of pets. We not longer have pets because of allergies. We are, however, more cat people than dogs. Not sure if that means anything, I am sure it is supposed to mean something. We have had several cats and after the last one had to be put down due to illness and old age we decided we couldn't go through that again. If I didn't have to deal with the allergies I likely would have caved. We always had a cat door and the cats would usually go outside when they needed to although we did always have a litter box as well. The cat door was fine except when they brought home friends which usually resulted in a fight and the stranger would leave minus some fur. We did have one cat who taught himself to use the toilet if the seat was left up. It was quite a sight.
Proud of you people who have quit smoking. I have heard that it is more difficult to quit smoking than dieting and I do know how hard that is!! Your lungs will thank you! I grew up in a home with two smokers and then married a smoker (quit about 30 years ago) so I am familiar with the side effects.
My clothes need to go into the dryer so I should get at that. Take care and keep smiling. Gayla

Whew, I did it. 45 minutes of eliptical, 30 minutes of arobics and 30 minutes of yoga. I gained 317 calories which is the highest I ever got. I did take breaks in between each bit of exercise and my back is sore now, so I might have overdone it. :ohwell: My husband thinks I am nuts, which I am, but I feel better about myself. :blushing:

BGamma, I so agree with you about the youth of today. If I ever back talked my mother she would have slapped my face. :embarassed: I know things are different now and you are not supposed to touch your kid but kids today have no respect for anyone. There is no fear of God in them, and what they learn and see on TV is shocking. I love my 14 year grand daughter to death, but she does hurt my feelings sometimes with her attitude and the way she talks to me. I in fact told her that yesterday and hope it sinks in. I know most of what we do, is spoiling these kids, they have no idea what tough times are. Even the adult children don't have the respect that I had with my elders. What comes out of their mouths amazes me, and they think they are either being funny or they feel justified.
Ok I am done, you hit a sore subject with me and I am glad others agree with me. :grumble:

Jake and Jeff, I too am an ex smoker. I started when I was 13 years old and quit when I was 50. My two year granddaughter at the time came to me and said grandma please quit smoking, I want you to live to see my grown up. My daughter taught her well didn't she? My father in law also died from lung cancer even though he had quit smoking years before and watching him die was the last straw for me.
I quit right after his funeral. :brokenheart:

Gayla, I hope you took some pictures of your cant who would use the toilet, it has to be hilarious. Don't think there is much difference in cat or dog people, we all love those animals the same.

Marie, the latest picture is from Easter and was taken in front of the Country Club where we had brunch. My yard is not that big, but once the flowers bloom it is beautiful. I don't plant until after May 31 because I don't trust our weather. :explode:

My son lives in Portland, Oregon and once visiting him we took a ride to Mt. St. Helens. It was the most terrifying ride going up the mountain, but once there it was amazing to see a volcano that had erupted and still was smoking all these years later. :noway:

Time to make our dinner, glad we are all back together with all of our stories. You are the best.

I am also an ex smoker.....I smoked for over 40 years....part of that time as much as 3 packs a day.....It seems like I was sick every winter...lung problems...but I still kept smoking...I use to say that my cigerettes helped my cough when I had a coughing fit.......In fact when I was a little kid and my asthma acted up...the doctor had her blow smoke in my mouth...does something to the bronical tubes...Really I am telling the truth......

But one day...over 10 years ago...I was smoking and coughing outside of my workplace...I said...this is really stupid....and I threw my pack of cigerettes in the trash and never smoked again...and believe it or not I have not had broncittis in over 8 years.....and I use to get it all the time....

Was it hard..not as hard as I thought it would be...I guess because I was finally ready....

So if this hard core smoker can quit anyone can....I am proud of anyone who does....

My daughter in Oregon e-mailed me this morning...and told me her and my son-in-law are quiting smoking again...I hope they make it this time......She is trying to lose weight and asked me a couple of weeks ago how I did it....I told her portion control and logging my meals...I am proud to say she listened to me...and lost 4 pounds the first week and 3 pounds the second....She started at 132...her doctor wants her at about 110....she is only 5 feet tall.....I hope some of this rubs off on my granddaughter because she is a tad overweight...she just turned 13....

Hope you all had a wonderful Monday...:flowerforyou:

Hey is this confession day. It used to be the thing smoking. But we did not know the danger we were doing.
Neither one of my girls smoke. My son and his wife did. My dil still does but my son did quit, but put on some weight. So he is having to deal with that. One of his girl smoke.. I did not put on weight when I quit but Thats when I found out I was a diabetic. It made me so thirsty I do believe if the only water around was the toliet I would have drinjk some. Thats how thristy I was. And I lost a lot of weight without even trying. I guess the water what did it. I would get up at night and drink whatever I could find in the fridge. Just gogle it down.

    See what you started Jake!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lafla, I too would like to see that picture of your cat if you or Dave took some, that's hillarious..

OMG Gayla! that cat REALLY used the toilet???????? That is amazing!!!!!!!!! I agree with everyone who hopes you have a picture of that!

Well, i started smoking when i was 14, but quit for good when i was 26. For me it was SOOOOO hard and even to this day sometimes i miss it! But it's kinda gross and SO bad for us and i'm really glad i don't anymore. Congrats to everyone who has quit! Good luck with it Jake! :flowerforyou:

Good Grief Sandy - you worked out likeCRAZY! I hope your back is all right....I'm glad you had that talk with your Granddaughter. I would throttle either one of my boys if they were ever rude to their Grandpa. I can't imagine them being that way tho.........When Dillon first went in the Army he had a myspace page and one of the question is who is your hero and his answer was his Grandpa and his Ma (me):smooched: made me pretty proud of him. Now we'll just have to wait and see what kind of kids THEY raise. Oh - i love your Easter picture!

Jeff - sorry you're going to miss that dead cow:sick: ! I, for one, am pretty happy it's gone! I took the dogs for a walk down there this evening! Hopefully there won't be anymore dead things to report!!!!! Although, i haven't seen the turkeys in a few days.............:ohwell:

So Marie - sounds like you and Jerry were quite the party aminals! I still have a beer every now and then - usually when i'm with my kids. Last night my dil spent the night and i made us hot toddys before bed. I think if you overindulge in ANYTHING it can be bad for you. I like the anything in moderation rule!

OK! bedtime for me and Hercky! Talk to you all tomorrow! hugs and  elli

Sorry folks -- no picture of Nicky (our cat) using the toilet. Dave always says I scared him away from it. How I happened to catch him was I was having a bath -- without my glasses (duh) and he hopped up on the toilet. At first I thought he was going to have a drink and then I realized what he was doing. I got my glasses on to get a good look at what he was doing and then yelled for Dave to come see him. Of course, he jumped off the toilet and I never caught him again. Cats are sneaky and he likely did not do it only once. He seemed to have it down to a science. He put 3 paws on the back part of the seat and one on the front so he was positioned perfectly. I really wish I had a picture. My friends cat used to turn on the water but then he would leave it running. Gotta love them. Oh, by the way, Nicky was an SPCA cat. He was well loved for many years.

The talk about children and grandchildren is sad. They need to know that they shouldn't take people for granted, parents, grands, friends. I guess sometimes you just have to sit them down and tell them how their behavior makes you feel. We all deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. I wish Neil was cognitvely capable of getting it when I talk to him about behavior!!

I am so proud of all of you ex-smokers!!

Marie--Thirst is a terrible thing. I once had a patient who had electrolyte imbalance and was so thirsty but couldn't have much to drink. We caught her drinking her flower water!! Now that is a thirst!! I really felt bad for her. So you are Jerry were party animals. We don't drink much here, the occasional glass of wine but we do usually have some beer in the cooler at the lake. If it is a really hot day we might get crazy and share a beer. Hopefully we will get the boat into the water this year and who knows, may even have a few sips of beer. :drinker:

Back atcha all tomorrow. Gayla

Happy Tuesday! (AKA "one day closer to Friday")

Gayla- Nice to hear from you! Glad to hear that spring is starting to make an appearance for you.

Elli- How is the wiring going?

Marie- Anything new with you today?

BG- Today is another day. Smile and go forth!

Sandy- You have been busy! Good for you! Keep right on going! What do you think of the yoga by now?

I had a very large negative calorie day yesterday, -1400, from the extra workout. I am hoping to put together another today. Eating 50% carbs, 40% protein. I am needing the carbs to get me through the extra exercise. I am due for another body fat percentage check in 2 weeks. I hope to be at 11-12% range.

Today's mission is to do something "extra" for someone close to you. Just because you want to do it. I assure you it will make you happier than than the recipient.

Wow... Miss one day with Y'all and you are some typing maniacs!

Ok just because I have to and I have refrained from replying all day.... BG your grandson needs to be told where the door is and not to let it hit him on the butt on his way out if he can not be courteous I dont gave a rats rumpus how old he is that is just plain rude... My son is 17 and if he did that I would be the first to knock him off his little high horse (obviously he cant stay out all night) My children are taught to be thoughtful of other people and how they feel.... (this is my nice version....I had to erase my military version)

so on with responding to everyone... if I left someone out I apologize....I forgot to bring home paper STILL!!!!

Barbie... its easy to have moderation when you dont like the food and ice cream isnt my favorite treat I love Jamba juice and that is definately not here or on most of the East coast where I moved.

BG... well hon I am 11 years older then your son but I think he deserves to be taken out back and shown some manners.

Jeff... Joe sounds like he will be a handful but so much fun. My daughter has a rabbit who is house trained and she tells me its no fair that she cant have a cat but at this point a cat and her asthma wouldnt go well together.

Sandy... I am good with support... to be honest its been rather boring here and my job as superintendent is kind of a pain...I would rather be out working and busting my butt then behind a computer so support is wonderful

Elli...I actaully enjoy when they have tacos...hard to mess that up,not as good as cake but I put sour cream on there so that is my cake ;)

Marie... a honkey tonk angel huh? nice... you so totally changed my picture of you :)

Gayla... I would love to see a toilet trained cat...even one who supposedly wasnt :) wonder how many times he did that little trick and you didnt know it? Hope every one is well at home.

Phobe...guess I will just say Hi because... well... I think my CRS has set in and I can not remember stuff... SO Hi...and I will go back and look again.

I ran 2 miles today...it was in the rain so not so hot... but I found out that there is one so called puddle on the route that was a little bit on the deep over my tennis shoe kind of thing... I am boycotting the chowhall prepared food for a while...at least the dinner and lunch ones and I think I will stick with roll ups....or wraps I guess is the term I should use... I actually like them and on fridays I can just add a grilled cheese in there with no problems. If I figured it out correctly I am eating 1400 calories a day I am having a hard time getting in my excercise calories since lately they have been through the roof I may have to cut back on the elliptical at this rate I can not stuff that much food in me...some days reaching 1200 is a killer. (read as not really digging the food)

Hope y'all have a great day I am heading to bed soon me and my 3 blankets... we have no heat in the B-hut tonight so this might be a bit chilly :) but I have a hut and a bed so I am one of the lucky people...the guys on convoys sleep in their trucks so I am good with the blankets.

This was my grandson I was talking about...not his dad....His dad knows better..He was raised better....and he is also a former Marine with good training...

Not much going on here today...the weight is up 2 pounds..guess I have not washed all of the sodium from Easter dinner out of my system yet......

I am leaving in a while to have some blood drawn before my doctors appointment next Wednesday....

I hope everyone is having a good day...:flowerforyou:

    Hey Beth!

Good to hear from you! I wondered about you at Easter. Glad to hear you are doing well. Keep me posted on the hula hoop. How long does it take to get things delivered? It is another cold and rainy day here in Indiana too. It is 46 F but that is 10 degrees better than yesterday! It is supposed to warm up after tomorrow. I am getting ready to start my garden soon and get my flowers going. My wife has finally started doing a little yoga with me but she backs off the weight training. I will get her step by step! LOL I have to fix our eliptical again. The belt keeps tracking off the pully and I cannot figure out the adjustment. Oh well! You hang in there with your blankets and have a great evening. Take care of yourself!

    Hi Everyone,

It is cold and miserable here, but they say it will reach 70 by the weekend. :flowerforyou:

Freeway had a bad night last night  We are trying to make the right decision but it is so hard to let go. :brokenheart:

Jeff, the yoga is going good, I think I am getting into it better because I do end up tired and sore.

Beth, if I ran two miles I would collapse. I do have bad knees though so I couldn't even if I tried.

I think I speak for BG and myself when I say we were venting about our grandchildren, we love them dearly and hope they learn from their mistakes. :smooched:

I like Jeff's mission for today to do something "extra" for someone close to you is great. I am going to keep that in the back of my mind all day and hope I can do a little extra. Thanks Jeff.

Ugg, time to exercise, got a late start again today. :grumble:

I just kept think of what I would do to my son (who wants to move to my parents for college) I am positive you love them to death :) I just think people can be so mean to the ones they love the most and never even realize it.
Have a great night / day all...I am going to bed this time :)

I am also very sorry to hear about freeway having a bad night... I know you will make the right decision no matter how hard...I will hope for the best for you all

Hi everyone! We are leaving for the city in a few minutes but thought I would drop in while Neil watches the end of his movie. It is time to pay our house insurance and sadly I think they haven't increased it with inflation so it means it will be even more!! However, I wouldn't want to be caught short if something were to happen. After experiencing the sewer back-up last year I guess I am more focused on the what-ifs!!

Jeffrey -- Something nice for someone. It seems like I am always trying to make someone happy but today I will go for something extra!

Barbie-- I used to love Sweatin' to the Oldies even though Richard can be a bit much at times. I also liked the end where each person talked about themself. I found that very inspiring. However, our family room now has a hospital bed in it so not much extra room and aside from that our VCR doesn't work anymore. I will look for it on DVD though. Does Jake sweat to oldies with you?

Beth -- Stay warm with your blankets. How cold does it get at night? The military really should be providing better food!!

Marie-- You are so right, I will be hanging my clothes out very soon. Likely later this week. How is the diet going? I did see that in Woman's World and thought of you. Maybe we will see your story there one day! I am interested in the pumpkin hummus, never heard of the combination and can't wait to hear how it turns out.

BigGramma -- Glad the blood work went well. Have a great inside day.

Sandy -- So sad for Freeway and for you. I hope he has a good day. I know you will know when it is time, until then just enjoy him and give him love.

Elli -- What's up today? Hope it is a good one.

Phoebe -- It must be nice driving now than it was a few weeks ago. As always, drive safe.

    Keep smiling. Gayla

It's almost bedtime and I'm checking in quickly.

Jake hurt his back most likely waxing the little red car. He went to the chiropractor before supper and is still in pain so he'll be going back again in the morning. So I don't have to look very far for someone to help today.

I didn't think I did much exercise but my pedometer says I've walked more than 17,000 steps today.

We bought yoga mats today. Now we have to find time to use them.

I had to add a pound to my ticker, that darn over eating. :grumble:

Gayla, we are enjoying Freeway and he is much calmer now. We talked to the vet last night and he said you will know when it is time, so in the meantime we are just loving him.

Barb tell Jake I am sorry about his back and hope he mends quickly. First the flu now his back, he needs some special loving from his bride.

Marie, I love summer, would like it 85 degrees all year round, that would be great. Not too hot, not too cold, great swimming and sunning weather. :flowerforyou:

good morning everyone - i've been trying to get here to post - just running around busy! Yesterday my friend Jenn and i met with the guy who is going to help us with the rewiring of the old part of the house. We'll be buying all the materials Sunday and then starting Saturday, the 25th. THIS Saturday i'm doing the fundraising thing with the hs girls that got cancelled last time because of weather. NOW we're in a winter storm WATCH (not as sure as a warning) starting tomorrow through Saturday. Sheesh!!!!!!:noway: It's not going to happen - we're going to get this thing DONE!!!!!!

Barb - sorry about Jake's back! I hope he's feeling better. Hopefully the chiro helped. Only you can do no excercise in a day and STILL walk 17,000 steps! AWESOME!!!!!!!

Jeff - i loved your do something nice for someone else! AND - my son immed me yesterday and asked me to gather some stuff for an Iraqi family with 6 kids that "provides us with good intel on bad people" so i went to dollar general and picked up stuff for the first box. Also got all 3 of our local schools involved so i'm excited about that!

I made it to the gym both Monday and tues - going to try for yoga tonight. Plus I'll walk the dogs today.

Sandy - i'm glad Freeway is still with you. I agree with your vet - you'll know.......and in the meantime just love him. Don't stress over the pound - it'll go away again.

Marie - i'm so curious about the pumpkin hummus! I had garlic and herb laughing cow with apples and a bagel alternative for breakfast. something different!

Hi Gayla! Darn expensive running a house isn't it? My insurance company loves us 'cause i have all our vehicles (mine and my boys), my house, Dillon's house, the business, umbrella policy, camper...............i feel like i'm always paying SOME insurance! But like you said - you sure don't want to be caught without it.....

OK - i'll try and talk to you guys again tonight. Everyone have a healthy happy day!

Hi everyone! We have cloud in Saskatchewan and the promise of rain tonight. I will like that, it would really freshen things up. I am planning to put my sheets on the line tomorrow so am hoping the rain will be gone by then. I am also planning to take my sister out to lunch for her birthday which has come and gone. I have go myself caught up in my library book which kept me up very late last night. I sat in the chair where we have the massage unit and completely vegged. I think I was nice to myself yesterday and will be again today!
We did a stop at Costco yesterday and what a crazy zoo it was. I guess the few dollars we saved made it worthwhile. After all, what is time when you are on holidays!
Neil woke up in a foul mood today which we mostly ignored. Sure enough, he had a big seizure and then all was well. Darn I hate the seizures. Just yesterday Dave and I were saying that Neil was having fewer seizures!! I guess we should keep our opinions to ourselves. :ohwell: As soon as recovery is complete from the orthopedic surgery we will be back to the epileptologist (neurologist who specializes in epilepsy) to decide about the seizure surgery. I think I should set up a spread sheet to monitor the number of seizures over the next few weeks. I don't want to go the surgery route if the seizures really are decreasing in number. The big plus would be it may get him off some drugs. Anyway. . . he is happy as a clam right now so Mama is happy too.

Take care and keep smiling. Gayla
