I've had an interesting challenge handed to me! :)

I've been pestering my husband and telling him that I want a Fitbit, because I think it'll motivate me to move around more so I can "win" steps and calories. ;) He thinks it's an unnecessary fitness gadget, and that I should probably just move around more by myself. :p

So, to motivate me a little (since I've been struggling a lot lately, as you all know, and he's been trying to find ways to help me with it) he gave me a challenge: If I can get my weight down to 65 kg by my birthday, he'll buy me a Fitbit. I'm currently at 69.3, and my birthday is on the eighth of October, which means I have 3.5 months to lose 4.3 kilos--very doable.

So, by putting it out here, I'm hoping you guys will help me stay accountable so I can win myself a Fitbit for my birthday! ;) (He'd probably buy it for me anyway, but I really want to win this challenge.)

You can do it! How many lbs is 4.3 kilos?

I could swear that it weighed twenty pounds and not even be exaggerating.

Having handled figure skating dresses with large amounts of stones on them before, I would wager that you are underestimating!

It's sooooooooooo beautiful! I keep going back to look at the picture because of how lovely it is. <3 Can I ask what the patterns on your feet are? Are they henna?

Aww, that is my husband's favourite event ever - he's a big motor racing fan. We miss stuff like that where we are. Hope you had a great time!

Aw I'm now a fan it was a brilliant day. Hadn't seen F1 cars in the flesh before and the V8 and V10 engines were so loud, it was brilliant to witness. My favourites were the American Monster Trucks basically doing wheelies up the hill.

Sooo jealous that you're at Goodwood. I really miss the scream of the old F1 engines - the new type are a lot quieter. So many stars are usually there too.

About 9.5lbs, so extremely doable by October, I think :)

Of course I live in a country that goes by the metric system, so everything is in kg, but there are some times I don't mind seeing weights in lbs (namely, how much I've lost, because the number is higher o:) ). I was almost physically sick the first time I converted my starting weight to lbs though. The thought of the number being over 200 was horrifying.

ok guys I am on the fence about something. I got asked out on a date this weekend. I don't date because in reality I don't have a lot of free time and I am certainly not wanting to take any time away from my son. But in spite of all this I am considering going. What's a girl to do?

Do you like date asker guy? If the answer is yes, then I say GO FOR IT!

I do like said guy lol

Well, then, buy yourself something pretty (sexy, but tasteful) and go and enjoy yourself. If you just get a meal and decent conversation but it doesn't go anywhere, at least you have a pretty new dress to wear later. But if it DOES go somewhere, I think we all expect to be invited to the wedding.

Hmmm sexy sounds like something I haven't done in a long time :) And of course you would all be invited honestly I feel closer to you guys lately than most of the people IRL :)

You HAVE to show us your choices before choosing though. I LOVE helping people pick out clothes and I've NEVER helped anyone get ready for a date before, well, besides myself of course.

    The bold part: me too!

Mo, I just ordered a couple of dresses from Modcloth for a wedding and I'm not sure which I want to wear! It's an afternoon ceremony but evening reception at a mountain lodge, so I went for more "fun" than "formal"...

    This pink one
Or this black embellished one (comes with straps)

When they actually arrive it might turn out that I hate the fit of one or both, but I couldn't decide and had to order both. All my cocktail dresses are either very winter-y (long sleeves, heavy fabrics, etc.) or too big, or make me look like a waitress (because I have an extensive collection of black cocktail dresses that I wore while bartending.)

There's a crazy four-hour gap between the ceremony and cocktail hour, though, so we were going to change, go for a hike, and come back and change back, so maybe I'll wear the pink one for the ceremony and the peacock one for the reception? Is that attention-grabby or weird?

I love love LOVE that peacock dress! But... I'm old school, so no black (or white) at weddings for me. Or is that concept passé now?

Black is very commonly worn at evening weddings here (at least the formal, hotel ballroom or whatever kind.) But I've read it's less common in the American South and in smaller cities/rural areas (where it's more traditional, I guess.) I even see black bridesmaids dresses quite often now.

@peleroja both of those dress are AWESOME!! I'd wear the formal one for the ceremony and the fun one for the reception where you'll be dancing the night away!! That's just my opinion though, both dresses are fabulous, you have excellent taste!!

I thought the polka dots were more "daytime" than evening - I guess maybe I think it's weird to wear a black dress like that for an afternoon thing? Especially for an outdoor ceremony?

This is not my realm of expertise, though, because I normally just go to work events and wear the same couple of navy or black super conservative dresses, all high neck and sleeves and stuff.

I agree with you: I'd wear the pink one for the ceremony and the black one at night. That one would be super fun to dance in and if anyone even implies that you're taking attention away from the bride maybe tell a little white lie and say you spilled something on the pink one.

Or, maybe I'm a terrible person for thinking this way? Personally, I don't care about weddings being ALL about the bride. They eat up an enormous amount of my time on a weekend, so I'm going to look good and enjoy it!

I'm pretty much that person too because I mostly hate weddings so it's hard to have a good time. Even my own was hard to deal with and it was tiny and very nontraditional. But the whole spend a whole weekend, drive (or fly) for hours, get an expensive hotel room, wait around forever between the ceremony and reception, eat a mass-produced hunk of chicken or "prime rib" at a table full of people you barely know with a glass of mediocre Merlot, sit through hard-to-hear speeches and bouquet tossing and dances and "funny stories" while drunk randos get gropey and terrible music plays...is just not my idea of a good time.

I attend happily for people I really care about because I love them, but I'm always kind of shocked when I hear someone say they like weddings. Everything about them (apart from the actual ceremonies, which are usually nice) makes me unhappy.

Could NOT agree with you more! My husband and I are really role reversed in almost every aspect, including this one. He LOVES weddings. He gets way too excited and spends way more time figuring out what he's going to wear than I do. I dread them.

And, I've worn black to the past two weddings we've gone to. It's easier to wear for an all-day thing that involves food and drinks. Much more forgiving if someone bumps into you and causes a spill.

I'm exactly the same way. I hate attention, dressing up, and having people look at me. I don't dance, the vegetarian meals are usually not very good/filling, I don't drink...the list goes on and on.
When we have gone to weddings, I have worn black every time.

Yes ma'am! We are twins. I do drink, but I'm very careful at weddings. Nothing like being unsteady on my high heels to completely ruin a whole look! Plus, if I am the designated driver I have more say over how long we stay.

All of this! Having people look at me and making conversation with people I don't know well, wedding food, etc etc...they're such terrible events for me. I'm also horrified by the expense and the wastefulness. The idea of spending $30,000 on one party makes me die a little inside. I just...you could do so much with that money! I don't care if that's judge-y (as it's not directed towards anyone in this thread...) I just don't get it.

And re: cake...you're all wonderful people and all, but wedding cake is definitely not sufficient compensation for having to attend an entire wedding reception, haha.

Most of the time it's not even good cake, just sickly sweet and covered in stale fondant. Such a sad dessert.

I do like the "dessert table" trend, though...but still. Definitely doesn't soothe my wedding pain.

That, plus a ridiculous amount of money for a dress that will only be worn ONCE... and all the damned fuss leading up to it!

Unfortunately the "dessert table" thing hasn't caught on here yet, that might be some compensation for me, lol.

My SO's daughter is getting married six months from now and I'm already dreading it. Thankfully I'm not involved in any of the preparations -- other than I'm apparently supposed to be nagging the SO to get a new suit, custom made no less, wtf?? -- but every now and then I catch some of the ongoing planning saga and it makes me cringe every time. Naturally, we'll be stuck at the reception to the bitter end... no ducking out early from this one :'(

I am hoping to dodge the photo shoot by insisting that I need to come home and feed the dogs. Since I'm not actually family, I think I can pull this one off successfully.

I hate weddings so much I was dreading my own. Luckily, my husband-to-be couldn't have cared less about the whole thing, so we ended up going to the JP. Only immediate family was invited (maybe 12 total). My dress cost $90. It was prom season and I found a white prom dress that was a perfect fit and looked just like my idea of a wedding dress. My husband borrowed a suit from his brother. His brother wore a suit from his closet, my sister wore a dress from hers (best man and maid-of-honor). Our "reception" was meeting back at my MIL for Stouffers lasagna, garlic bread, salad, and cake made at home in a regular cake pan. My sister worked at a florist and made my bouquet and corsages for my mom and MIL. No dancing, no speeches, no tapping of glasses (I HATE that). Total cost was under $300. I wasn't going out of my way to be cheap, I just don't understand spending loads of money on a ceremony. There are so many other things newlyweds could use that money for. I've never regretted it. We did spend actual real money on the rings, though.

Completely in agreement. I didn't want to waste money on a wedding at all, so I pretty much begrudged every penny that was spent on the thing. My mother wanted it badly, though. My wedding dress was this horribly heavy, traditional Omani wedding dress--It was a nightmare to get on and off. When I tried to take it off after the wedding was over, I pretty much just got stuck in it and my husband and I laughed 'til we nearly cried trying to rip the thing off of me. O.o Also, he laughed even more because my aunt had stuffed an ENTIRE box of tissue down the chest because apparently I didn't have enough to suit her, and when we were trying to pull it off a whole pile of ripped up tissue came floating down. :D

    My dress:

    2aub05l1h0ed.jpg

    hk19m7qf7oca.jpg

... I almost killed myself in those heels, just so you all know.

Editing to add... Also, the make-up was so horrible that my husband actually pointed and laughed and laughed and laughed when he finally saw me. He also pulled out his phone and took a picture so he could laugh some more later. :D This was after he took his first look and said "Oh my God. I didn't sign up for this. I AM OUT OF HERE." and turned on his heel and pretended to run away. :p

It kind of sounds like he was being mean when I write it out, but it was actually pretty hilarious to both of us--we have a weird sense of humor. I mean, guys, seriously: THE MAKE-UP ARTIST DREW AN EXTRA LIP ON ME. She said I didn't have enough lip, whatever that means. O.O

Wow the dress looks intricate but the detail looks amazing. Was the dress in your family for a long time? LOL @ the whole extra lip. Maybe your husband should've drew another eye on the makeup artist?

Still haven't caught up but I probably won't bother with yesterday's posts at this point.

I'm slowly losing my mind over my cat who's been pacing the house meowing every night at 3am for a few days. At least this time I managed to go back to sleep right away, but still. SO ANNOYING.

So maybe this is mean, but do you have a crate for her? Muffin had a bad habit of attacking feet in the middle of the night, which I had no patience for, so if my feet got attacked, she got put in her crate for the rest of the night - in a part of the house I couldn't hear her meowing. I only had to do that for about two weeks and then the nighttime foot attacking stopped.

@pofoster21 I'm sorry that guy took credit for YOUR work! So frustrating. And I see you as "Doctor Patricia". Is that okay?

@Tubbs216 give him enough Valium to knock him out. Seriously though, I hope it goes well and that he's not too much of a baby for you!

I never use the Dr. but yes, feel free! As long as its not Dr. Pat

I "rarely" use the Dr. but I pull it out once in awhile if it serves a purpose, and once in awhile it does. I don't use it with people I know - I prefer my first name. I use Dr. Lastname just in business type situations.

I tell my students to call me my first name, but if that feels weird to them, then it's Dr. or Professor Lastname. Mrs. Lastname, especially since my husband and I do not have the same last name, kills me in professional situations. Outside of work, I don't care what you call me, but on things that force you to pick a title, I pick Dr. I never thought I would be someone who cares except when I taught in Texas, the students had a horrible habit of referring to all male professors as Dr. and all female professors as Miss - i.e. a student would come into my office: "Miss X, Dr. Y said I should talk to you about me analysis" - that got me to start caring.

This would tick me off. Totally sexist.

It is me. 4 in the home now, 2 on the porch, and 2 at the barn. I have to admit 4 in the home is a lot now when I feed. And the politics of who gets fed where...exhausting. But Cobweb is doing great (latest addition, you all went through that with me). He is the sweetest cat.

He likes to jump on the 1/2 wall between the toilet and the vanity when I get out of the shower and while I dry myself off he reaches out to me, to be petted, etc. The other day, I bent over drying my legs and he proceeded to walk onto my back and lay down! So there I am, stark naked, with a purring cat laying on my back and licking my wet hair. I crouched down to try and get him to walk off me, but he resettled himself and kept purring away. I finally had to slowly stand until he slid off, praying all the time he wouldn't grab me with his claws to stay on. If I had had a camera and wasn't such a prude, I would have taken a selfie and posted it (but yes, I was stark naked, so probably that wouldn't be allowed on here!).

    6xohddehd56f.jpg

Ok, sorry that this is giant...I haven't a clue how to shrink it. But, I just wanted to share what our feeding time looks like... :)
They all have their own bowls and go right to them when it's time to eat! Such good little piglets!

Awesome. Kinda makes me cringe though, just imagining all those meowing at 3am every night like mine does...

My sister's nine cats tend to join her and sleep piled all over her and her bed--they don't generally stay up all night. It's a pretty funny sight! There will be one on her head, one or two on her torso, one curled at her legs... If she moved in her sleep she'd probably squash the lot. :D

My 3 cats all sleep with me. The all seems to have assigned themselves spots. I am hoping Cobweb eventually joins us but Emilia and he are still not getting along. Eventually.

I have banged my knees up and scraped my hands, but most of the damage was to the portable players.

Even if it hadn't broken, I wouldn't have been taking it with me. I HATE the portapotty. Ew.

I did too until I started going to horseshows. 14 to 16 hour days and porta potties are the only option. Then add in marathons and triathlons and you learn to use them. They are gross though. No doubt.

I still need to catch up but I wanted to vent on something.

No one probably remembers but I have talked about that guy who is on the phone at work all the time and everyone loves him even though he barely works...he just let me know he won some award so he is getting a plaque/prize at 10 today.

    I'm like seriously...

This just happened to me. The conference I am at they did recognition awards. The guy in my group that won got recognized for 2 projects I led. One was done before he came on board. The other he came in on the tail end and had zero to do with. I totally led them. This is like the 4th time over the years this has happened to me. No one in an operations driven organization ever appreciates marketing communications. But I PROJECT LED these. This guy is connected.

I confess as soon as the awards were over I grabbed my stuff, went to hotel, and am now drowning my sorrows by reading this thread. :( I am feeling very sad.

Ohhh that totally sucks! :/ Sure sounds like some sort of favouritism going on. Mind you, some of those ambitious types just rack up the undeserved awards so they can move up to their next rung... maybe he'll be gone soon?

He will he is trying hard to get VP. He is just too well connected. He literately had nothing to do with either project he got recognized for. The problem is I am not political. At all. And it hurts me. Oh, well, I either need to suck it up or move on to another company. I control the destiny of this...so I have to choose how to deal with it. I have decided to just let it go. Thanks for letting me vent in here. :)

The nice thing about being old is that you get to see karma in action. :)

Something similar happened to me years ago. I was a "shoe-in" for a promotion, the head of the hiring committee even told me on the QT that I was the successful candidate... then the CEO overruled the committee's decision and gave the position to her Golden Boy. Everyone in the organization was so shocked that he'd been selected, when I congratulated him after the official announcement he told me that I was the only person who'd done so. Despite his favoured status, less than a year later Golden Boy left us for a better job at another organization. (And loss of a trained employee is HUGE for us, it takes about a year to bring new staff up to speed.)

Yes,it happens all the time not fair but real. Sorry that happened to you. I think this is partly what has been contributing to my general malaise this week. I'll just keep on counting on karma!

@raelynnsmama52512 yayyyyy for her using the potty!!!! That's a milestone and I know how excited you are! Our 3.5 yr old is finally starting to get potty training with no accidents but it was a LONG battle to get to this point.

@pofoster21 I was contemplating going back for my DBA, but it is completely irrelevant for my occupation unless I want to adjunct. I can do that with my MBA/MS (if they ever officially accept me to the freakin program!!) so a DBA isn't in the cards for me. I'd still love to do it, though.

As for me, I hit normal BMI today, yay! Had a woosh yesterday and today so I'm now considered "normal". I ordered the sunglasses to celebrate. I really needed that because I'm working SO hard on this and when the doubts creep in and "Well maybe I can still be ok being chubby" runs through my brain, I can at least tell myself I'm now in a normal range and to keep going. I darn sure do not want to undo all this work, and I'm now 7.5 pounds under my pre-pregnancy weight with son #2. Another 8 lbs to go and I'll be under my pre-pregnancy weight with son #1.

I'm a goober because I actually shed a tear or two this morning when I saw my weight. DH is working 12 hour days, the baby has a double ear infection, I'm exhausted and have not been feeling like I'm very super great lately. It was nice to see some validation :)

Congratulations on the weight! Sorry you aren't feeling great otherwise. Hopefully it's better now as I am about 4 days behind at this point. Back on page 1067.

If I had had a camera and wasn't such a prude, I would have taken a selfie and posted it (but yes, I was stark naked, so probably that wouldn't be allowed on here!).

Ok, sorry that this is giant...I haven't a clue how to shrink it. But, I just wanted to share what our feeding time looks like... :)
They all have their own bowls and go right to them when it's time to eat! Such good little piglets!

This is what mine is like except I had to move 2 into living room as Portia tends to keep going to everyone else's bowl and then they don't all get to eat. So I split the bowls up. This slows her down a bit and then they can all get some.

Oooh your birthday is the day after mine!

Great challenge, you can really focus on the goal. Can you put notes on the cupboard doors in the kitchen to help?

Do you have stairs to your apartment? Can you aim to walk up and down them 10 extra times a day or something?

I love my Fitbit, I have a flex, it really motivates me to move more.

If anyone wants to be friends on Fitbit, I'm up for that

I sent you a pm with my email address to be friends on Fitbit. I have a flex too.

I think I have my stride length messed up on there - almost 13,000 steps and it only gave me 2.74 miles walked.

Wow!! Thank you for all the birthday wishes!! I am really feeling the love!!! <3 You guys are the best (super great!)!! I'm so excited for dinner/dessert tonight. I've already eaten a red velvet whoopee pie (before lunch!)...so looks like my calorie count is up more than I planned...but guess what? I DON'T CARE TODAY!!
@Susieq_1994, I am so sorry that you are having a tough day! I really have no words...but, hugs to you!
@CountessKitteh, that's really nice of you to make sure that your vegetarian MOH (and other guests) will have something good to eat!! You have to let me (us) know what you end up with for the veggie option! :)
@MoHousdon, sorry about the ongoing stepdaughter/cat drama!!! What a bummer...but set all of that aside because you are going to have the BEST vacation ever with your sweet, loving Mr. Mo! Have a blast...can't wait to hear all about it and see pictures when you're back! We'll miss you!

She happens to eat fish, so that gives me more options! I think we're going with a Chilean Sea Bass with a ginger scallion (I think - didn't care, it was amazing) sauce. Sides will probably be standard roasted veggies (for everyone - buffet!) because it'll be late fall in Pennsylvania.

However, I'm also having a FRENCH FRY BAR so who cares about dinner? Plus most of the things they'll be passing around during cocktail hour happen to be seafood or non-meat (figs with goat cheese and balsamic reduction what?!) because I think it's important to mix it up. I like food way too much to settle.

Nothing's finalized since I'm an insane person and still have 16 months until my wedding, but these are very important decisions so I've started working on them now. ;)

I've never heard of a french fry bar, that sounds amazing! I apologize if you took offense to my comment about buffets but your food sounds incredible! I can't believe you have so much planned and there's still 16 months to go.

Oh, absolutely not offense taken. I agree that weddings are a giant pain and really only go for the cake and the dancing. I'd love to skip out on planning one, but my hubby-to-be is from a huge Italian Catholic family and it would probably break their hearts if we eloped. So, we compromised on a more reasonable number (it probably could have been 300 if I let his mom have any actual say) and I'm making all the details suit my weirdness (replacing the wedding march with something more my style, etc). I'm also THE crankiest person when I don't eat, so it was vital that the food not suck. :)

I'm in grad school (wrap up should be in the spring) and in a friend's wedding 6 months before mine, so I just knew I wouldn't have a lot of time if I left things for later. I'm also a teeeeeeeeeeeeeeeny bit Type A. ;)

My invitation must have gotten lost in the mail.

If I EVER have a wedding/vowel renewal, I'm 100% stealing this idea. French fries are seriously one of my favorite foods and a French fry bar would make me happier than I really care to admit. I may also have a DP fountain. You know, like a chocolate fountain, only with Dr. Pepper.

Dr Pepper fountain, that's funny stuff. :D

Come to think of it, I may steal the french fry bar idea too. We like to have game nights/parties at our house and I'm always trying to think of new food to serve.

    ETA: I can't spell

Drooling over the idea of the French fry bar

    For the curious!

Hello friends!! I haven't been around today at all I've already missed so much so here goes all in one-

@Susieq_1994 you're exactly two days younger than my second youngest brother! He'll be 21 on the 6th and then my youngest brother will be 18 on October 7th! And thanks for the recipe thread I've never been much of a cook but I've really wanted to try lately!! Oh and your wedding dress was stunning!

So many October birthdays in this thread! I hope you enjoy any recipes that you try--I always try to make my instructions very comprehensive so that I remember exactly how I made them, and also so I can give them to my sister to try--she's a beginner at cooking, so every step needs to be outlined for her. :)

@pearso21123 & @annette_15 Yup, my husband has always had the weirdest sense of humor. Luckily, we share the same weird humor, because while I think he's awesome--I think most wives would have slapped him for it by now. ;)

@Lilaclovebird Yup, it was really, really heavy. And I definitely would have prefered a very simple dress--for the actual signing of the wedding contract (this is usually treated as an engagement party in Arab culture), I wore a simple light pink Jordanian-style jilbab with light gray trim and no make up. I got told off by my step-father's family for not "dressing up for the occasion", and they were pretty nasty about it, too. I was really upset. What I want to wear on my wedding day or engagement should be my business, in my opinion.

As for the focus, there are actually two parties, since weddings shouldn't be mixed in Islam. I would say that both sets of parents get equal congratulations, but the fathers get it there and the mothers get it at the actual wedding party. The mother of the bride probably gets a leeetle more focus because she's generally crying her eyes out... ;)
