Holy crap on a stick. That's absolutely ridiculous!
What is UP with all the WOO and fearmongering in this thread? Holy crap.
1. Carbs are not bad.
2. Carbs do not cause fat gain unless you go over your maintenance calories several times.
3. Fat doesn't cause fat gain unless you go over your maintenance calories several times.
4. Sugar is NOT evil, the devil, or the devils spawn. Sugar is sugar and your body does not tell the difference between the types of sugar. One type of sugar isn't necessarily better than another.
5. Sugar does not cause fat storage unless you consume more calories than your maintenance.
6. Sugar is not high calorie.
7. Taubes, Dr Oz, Mercola, Adams, Fung, et al....All Quacks. And authority nutrition is not an authority on nutrition.
Seems like quite a few would benefit from reading up on scientific studies and even basic physiology.
It's January! Happy New Year, MFP!!!!
Honestly, I feel sorry for the OP, but I suspect she is long gone.
Low carbing can be fine for some people, but the information her doctor gave her wasn't enough to go on, was overly restrictive (what the heck with no diet soda or artificial sweetener?), and didn't give her a real understanding of how it all was supposed to work.
I hope she's still reading or at least went to the low carb group and will find out enough to stick to a calorie deficit, learn that she can eat vegetables and have artificial sweeteners, and that there are other options and different carb levels if low carbing isn't working for her.
+1 the above.
I would have a small problem if your doctor needlessly presented a ketogenic diet as the "only" way to lose weight. The relative merits of diets can be debated and there are pluses and minuses to consider.
I have a much bigger problem with obvious factual errors in the information you say you were provided with. Artificial sweeteners negatively affecting weight loss? "natural sugar" in bacon which is permissible, while (un)natural sugar in fruits or vegetables is not? Specific combinations of foods that target belly fat?
I am not a doctor. Your doctor is a doctor. Then again I've personally met doctors who I would classify as idiots.
I do not follow advice I receive from doctors I believe are idiots;not unless I get the advice confirmed through a second opinion I receive from a doctor whom I do not consider to be an idiot.6 -

Pigs do not contain sugar.
But the babies are so sweet!
I'm never eating bacon again!
Grown up pigs aren't nearly as cute, and that's where we get the bacon!

Nothing wrong with your Drs program! It works for me and actually saved my life! We do not NEED sugar or starch to be healthy!! Starting wt: 513, Current 360!!! The Low Carb Support group on Facebook is great....and you can find plenty of recipes just by looking for Keto or Low-carb....I don't know how to add friends on here, but you're welcome to contact me.2

you do need some carbs to be healthy(no carbs means no fruit or veggies also).4 -
These threads are such a bummer for me. They give LCHF a bad reputation. It makes me really sad.
I eat lower carb because...diabetes. It's a total WOE for me. I eat potatoes (had an 8.1 ounce russet baked and topped with some kosher salt and 63 g of full fat sour cream as part of dinner tonight). I eat LOTS of vegetables (even the occasional ear of corn *gasp*). I eat rice, pasta, bread, cake, brownies, cheesecake, etc. I just eat it with my macros in mind and I do need to spread that throughout the day somewhat to keep my blood sugar stable.
I've lost 14% of my body weight since July (I know because I went to see the doctor today and when she tried to update my electronic chart it gave her an alert to double-check my weight). Sadly it has not all come from my stomach and thighs. I've lost a little everywhere. I notice the most in my face and stomach though.
OP, please be careful. I have some serious reservations about this plan. It doesn't seem sustainable, and a sustainable way of eating is essential to this journey. If it isn't a way you can envision yourself eating 5 years from today then I suggest you get a second medical opinion from a dietitian. The way I eat now was actually designed specifically FOR ME when I was pregnant and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
Please be sure to take care of yourself. I'm afraid your energy level will wane terribly and negatively impact any fitness goals you might have. Also remember that very low carb diets tend to require an increase in sodium intake.11 -

If I had to choose between giving up bacon forever and killing that poor sweet little adorable piggy myself.......hand me the knife, I'm hungry.3 -

Well yeah, obviously! Overeating sugar Bash fat all you want, but I can tell you that I have never sat with a tub of butter, unable to put the utensil down because I just HAD to have another bite. Substitute butter with ice cream however, and you'll see where my weight problems come from.
If you re-read my post, I had nothing bad to say about restricting all calories and keeping sugar in your diet. It is (not-so-simple) physics of energy in, energy out (not-so-simple due to the variables that can change the rate (metabolism) of the individual's energy expenditure, but simple due to the easy to understand concept of what goes in, must come out) This was just my viewpoint on a type of diet that a lot of people seem misinformed about. I don't think many people just jump on the ketogenic diet without doing some research first. And the research predominantly states that it's hella good for my purposes.
Check the nutrition info on the ice cream and you'll see it likely has as much fat as sugar.
The ice cream I eat has 17g sugar and 6g Fat for 200g. Calorie for calorie it has a tad more fat than carbs/sugar, or am i mathing wrong?
Since you asked ... you're mathing wrong.
17 X 4 = 68 calories of sugar in 200 g serving (and probably more calories of total carbs, but you didn't give us the carbs grams)
6 X 9 = 54 calories of fat in 200 g serving0 -

Dammit, i knew something looked off! Numbers and early mornings do not a good mix make!
Carbs are also 17g, 12g Fibre.0 -
Holy cow, this thread, the woo.
OP, some people have great success doing keto or low carb, so if you want to give it a shot, go for it.
But your doctor has no clue what he's talking about. Please find the Low Carb group here on MFP and get more solid info on how to eat that way correctly. Best of luck11 -

exactly one doctor told me to go down to 1200 calories if I stopped losing weight, my BMR is more than that and I wouldnt have safely been able to eat 1200 with my activity level,I would have done harm to myself.3 -
I saw someone say I was probably long gone but I'm not. I'm still here reading the good and the bad. I'm choosing to read but I have kept my thoughts to myself. I'm taking in ideas and sites to look at and gaining some new friends along the way. I've been busy at work today so I've been getting pieces through the day. I logged my food for the first time today and I will have to go from there. Thank you for the help. I will continue to read as more posts pop up.15

Hi @microwoman999,
What a flurry of advice!
If you are interested in eating a lower carb diet, and that does seem to be what your doctor was recommending, - although, as the others have said, he got a great deal incorrect -:
Come on and join the people at the Low Carb group on MFP. There are low carbers, ketoers, slow carbers. pre-diabetics, diabetics and many successful, supportive and informed people there.

There is nothing wrong with low carb done properly, but there is SO MUCH wrong with her doctor's advice, it isn't even funny.12 -
My dietician has put me on something similar. I'm only allowed a total of 105g of carbs a day. And they have to be consumed in small 15g increments except lunch which is 30g.
It is because I am insulin resistant, and have hypothyroidism. Making it very difficult to lose weight, even on a calorie deficit2 -

the low carb and loving it facebook page will help u!! i did this and lost 100lbs in 5 months.2 -
tinaisstillwell wrote: »This is basically a Ketogenic, or high fat/low carb diet (HFLC). I've eaten this way for over a year and have lost over 30 lbs.
This type of diet is good for those who have a lot of weight to lose. The fat consumed helps increase the feeling of satiety; allowing for decreased cravings and hunger.
Mainstream nutrition generally doesn't agree with this type of diet, but it works.
i too had great results from this over a short period of time. i definitely recommend it.. but not forever since it can be hard on the heart0 -
Personally this is the only type of 'diet' that works for me. However, I struggle as I am lactose intolerant too, so cannot have cream or cheese, so is very limiting. It does improve all of my health conditions though, so something in it must work for me.
This kind of diet certainly helps if you are 'always hungry' as it eradicates cravings and hunger fabulously. Good luck0 -

I'm so glad you're still here. And I hope you joined the low carb group. If that way of eating suits you, they can be much more helpful to you than your doctor's advice was! It's the general idea he gave you, but they can help you fine tune things.
If you find that it's not working well for you, you can always add more carbohydrates (starches and other fruits than berries) back in. As long as you stick to a calorie deficit, you will lose weight.
I low carbed for ten years but didn't know that I needed to maintain a calorie deficit at the time and found it wasn't a sustainable lifestyle choice for me. I've dieted differently (and successfully) this time.
Best of luck to you.7
