I clocked out at 1141g today!

    488g lentils, 200g green peppers, 120g carrots, 120g banana, 100g onion, 70g blueberries, & 43g baby spinach.

That was a lot more veg, and a lot more effort than I expected.

Sadly only 80g of beans/lentils (one serving) count towards the 10 a day (there's a link somewhere on page one with what counts and if it has limits) but that's still a stellar effort :)

I believe that's a UK rule (but so is the "10 a day" part).

The US legume rule is even more whacky: As I read it, you count legumes as a protein serving unless/until you have enough protein servings for the day (counting non-legume protein sources first, of course). Any excess legumes that you don't need to meet your protein goal can be used to meet your veggie goal - as many of the legumes as you want. I think maybe peanuts only count as a protein, not a veggie ever, even though they're legumes? Not sure! And don't go counting dairy as a protein food, no matter how much protein it has, 'cause it's in the dairy group, counted separately. Except cream and cream cheese, which are not dairy.

No, I didn't make that up. You can't make this s*** up! (https://choosemyplate.gov/vegetables-beans-and-peas, and you can link from there to the other nonsense.)

The US also doesn't use the 80g simplification. It's in cups, how many cups they say you need varies by age/sex, and while most things count 1C as 1C (including 100% veg or fruit juice), instead lettuce and its ilk are 2C counted as 1C eaten, and dried fruit counts as 1C if you eat 1/2C. There are cup-equivalencies for whole fruits, like a whole apple or pear. Confused yet? ;)

See also: My post up-thread speculating that the national variations have something to do with our national eating patterns. Don't you UK folks eat beans for breakfast a lot, or something, so maybe The Authorities think you already get plenty? We USAians (except veggies like me) mostly only eat beans in Mexican food, or at holidays in baked beans. ;)

Also, our authorities think we're patient with complicated counting rules. They evidently don't know us very well.

It boggles the mind how these people are in charge of running entire countries! The group of us could put together a much clearer, simpler guideline, (which includes mushrooms as a veggie, white potatoes and all the darn beans/lentils you want :D ).

Keep in mind these were promulgated by our nutritionist types (people in general are notoriously bad at simplifying/explaining complicated things they know really a lot about, for an audience of people who not only don't know, but don't really care very much (so require a marketing approach).

Our politicians - those running the country - are a whole 'nother category of improbable. But I didn't really post this reply to critique politicians (too easy). Here's the on-topic reason for replying:

I forgot to mention: The US rules do let one count mushrooms as a vegetable, 1C = 1C. Even though they're a fungus, even though they have a bit of protein.

    I don't know about UK.

US also counts white potatoes as a starchy vegetable, 1C = 1C (which kind of defeats my earlier argument about national authorities adjusting recommendations based on national eating patterns and their deficiencies. Potatoes are probably the one veg USAians do get in some quantity, on average).

US does have separate daily recommendation levels for starchy vegetables and non-starchy vegetables, though - can't resist a chance to complicate things! ;)

This is the New Zealand 5+ a Day site: http://www.5aday.co.nz/facts-and-tips/fruit-vegetable-info/.aspx

No lentils/beans for us (which I concur with but am totally counting for the challenge), but it looks otherwise fairly standard, including mushrooms. And a serving size is a handful cos everyone has hands ;) (the info on each fruit/veg also gives serving size in grams).

    Well, I made it today...barely.
884g of veg, and only counting 80g of the lentils I had today.
I've got to figure out how to space it all out better....I ate over half of it all in one go, and it was just a wee bit much.

It's really interesting to learn about how it's calculated differently...it all seems unnecessarily complicated

In the US here. 1/2 cup of fruit or cooked veggies= a serving. A small can of V8 =a serving. Fresh veggies/like salads 1 cup= a serving. And I think potatoes count too. Anyhoo.....
I had 10 servings not counting the potato.

Heh, I was wondering where this thread was as I think I originally followed a link -- didn't think to look in Challenges, dumb.

Got my 10 yesterday. Going to use it as motivation to actually log consistently, so I hope it's still going!

Stopped reporting here because I usually eat tediously many vegetables, and I got tired. ;)

Had a bit of a train-wreck travel weekend a week ago, so have done a rough count on the last few days to make sure I'm back to normal. Around 15 servings yesterday if I count all the pinto beans (150g total), so I think things are OK.

That was mixed berries in my oatmeal, pintos with onions/sweet peppers and salsa as an entree, a big salad (romaine, spinach, whole cucumber, tomato), plate of raw veggies (celery, carrot, avocado).

I just need an excuse to make myself log. I can't seem to sustain more than a day at a time and then I forget or decide it's a pain because I went out to eat and blow it off. Counting veg seems fun.

Kind of the same here. I'm continuing to eat a lot of vegetables, but because I make them in batches they tend to repeat. Not every day, but usually several times a week.

If you wanna keep coming in here and reporting, I promise to check in periodically and click positive reactions, plus toss in the odd random comment. Y'know, just to keep you motivated. ;)

Has the added plus of keeping the thread bumped. Maybe we could lure in some hungry newbies, and get them over-satiated, too? ;);)

I'm going to jump in a bit late if that is alright. This is a great thread and I hope I'll be welcome :)

I ate 800g yesterday. I usually do a fruit and kale smoothie for breakfast, raw fruit and veggie lunch and then protein and veggie dinner. Last night we had roasted portobello with arugula salad and 15g of rendered bacon (american bacon).

My IBS decided to flare and my veggie consumption has had to fall wayyyyyy down because my favorites tend to not play well with it. I'm getting some pumpkin, butternut squash, potatoes, and zucchini, but I'm BORED.

That really stinks. Due to this challenge, I have figured out that blueberries are the culprit that were making me feel like crap, particularly when I ate 6 servings a day. I've toned it down and with a couple of servings it's nothing a little chamomile tea can't help, so nowhere as bad as IBS. You have my sympathies if everything is wreaking havoc with you. No fun.

It's sort of my fault. I have celiac disease, my guard slipped, and I got glutened. The aftermath of that triggered the IBS. Which triggers transient food intolerances. Right now dairy and soy aren't my friends and neither are cruciferous veggies. Of course, those are my favorites. If history holds true, this will go on for a couple of months. Oh joy.

I forgot about applesauce. I should be able to handle that.

    Checking in from yesterday.

150g Zucchini bake (1 serving of zucchini, onions, and mushrooms)
    400g crudites 400g
    200g tomato braised cauliflower 200g
    20g green chili salsa 40g
80g split pea soup with onions, peppers, and celery
    160g medium pear
    120g large banana
    Total: 1130g

For the zucchini bake, the weight is a conservative estimate. And it surprised me, but I couldn't find a good source for the weight for a banana without the peel. I think 120g is accurate, but don't quote me on that.

Btw, the zucchini bake is very tasty. I'll post a recipe when I can.

Well, it's going to depend entirely on the size of the banana ;). FWIW, a bit of testing (weighing peeled, then unpeeled) suggests a third (from memory) of the total weight is a good amount to subtract if you can't weigh it unpeeled. I absolutely would not go by 'small', 'medium, 'large' for bananas. A 100g (unpeeled) banana is actually pretty small. Given that they're delicious little calorie bombs, that's a fruit I'd be pretty careful about trying to be as accurate as possible with. They're dense, and tend to weigh way more than people think they do.

I had what I thought was a large banana and it weighed in at 155 grams. I have seen larger though.

    Was that peeled or unpeeled?

Fwiw, I'm only wondering about how many grams to count for my total here. I try to overestimate the size for my food diary.

Also fwiw, I see an extra "40g" floating in my list. That's just a typo.
