I find out once and for all today if Samsung will replace my watch. If not, I gave hubby a list of my top 3 Garmin choices in a variety of price points since my birthday is on Tuesday.

I am kind of thinking that we should be hoping for Samsung to NOT repair it here... :)

Part of me is, yes. I would never recommend a Samsung device of any sort after my experience with them, but I also wasn't looking to spend another $300++++ on a new watch. We are due to get new phones soon, also, so I now I don't feel locked in to getting a Samsung for the optimal compatibility of also having the Samsung watch.

It's a shame a company cares so little about customer service. My family as a looooot of Samsung devices.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I have not yet had to deal with Garmin's customer service even though I have had their GPSs in my cars for over a decade. So I guess that speaks for itself.

But yeah, these toys are NOT cheap. :disappointed:

take up running they said. It’s a cheap sport, you can just throw on so shoes and go they said....

Ah yes, I think we've all fallen for that one. My husband is convinced my running gear and accessories are more expensive than his golf gear.

    Just this year I’ve purchased:
-5 pair sneakers (all over $130 each)
-a Nathan waist band for holding phone/keys ($30)
-a Nathan hand held water bottle ($20)
    -a Nathan Hydration vest ($80)
    -a roo pouch ($30)
-6 pair belaga socks ($12 each)
-3 tech tanks, 2 tech running shorts ($40)
-Bluetooth headphones that have since broke ($27)

    Yeah, not cheap!

October running total to date – 127.44

    Nominal challenge goal: 100 miles

Real goals: Get healthy enough to run 5 days a week. Avoid re-injury. Build base.

Today's notes – It's feeling like real running weather now, 50º F (10º C) for this evening's running. That felt cooler than I expected, so I ended up running in a jacket that I thought I'd only wear till I started running. Ran the 2 mile warmup with some other guys, had a nice conversation and kept the pace slower than I would solo.

This evening my increasing capacity intersected with the easing of hard assignments as the club gears up for Sunday's race. The assignment was 1-3 x 10 minutes at T w/2 minutes recovery, plus 6 x 100m strides. The sound track was, only people who aren't racing on Sunday should do the 3 x 10 minutes; the rest of us do 1x or 2x.

So I went out and ran my 2 x 10 minutes at T, starting and ending on the track but doing the bulk of the running around campus with some small ups and downs. Took and extra 15 seconds or so on the second recovery so I could start the strides on the line at the track. Then I lost count of strides, and made sure I ran at least 6; looked at Strava afterward, and there were 8 short peaks on the pace chart. Oh, well. 8 strides won't kill me.

The speed workout proper came in about 4.5 miles. I thought about total miles for the week, and decided to skip the traditional 2 mile cool down run. I walked a couple laps of the track instead, because it's good to move gently after running hard.

I'm feeling really good right now. I still have to pay attention to not overworking the recovering ankle, but I think I'll be able to race properly on Sunday. Now the biggest decision is how far to run on Saturday, since I have no structured long run to pace that day.

Ah yes, I think we've all fallen for that one. My husband is convinced my running gear and accessories are more expensive than his golf gear.

My friend offered to pick up our race packets at Fleet Feet I was like OMG thank you that store costs me at least $200 every time I walk though the door. I have to admit though I'm a bit disappointed that I can't go. :disappointed:

My nearest Fleet Feet is about 90 miles away, which is probably a good thing. I'm picking up a race packet tonight, but luckily for my wallet, it's at the local pizzeria rather than a running store.

I can relate - My nearest Running Store is in GP - 2.25 hrs one way = long day trip
Next store is in Edmonton 4.5 hrs one way + Hotel = expensive even before you get through the front door of a store.

Second Run with the Garmin 935.

Know a bit more about it. I have it set in "GPS" mode instead of "GPS+GLONASS" mode. The docs say that the GPS+GLONASS is faster, and more accurate in "challenging environments" but drains the battery more. I have never had any issues with GPS any of the places I run, it typically is very accurate and I can not outrun it. So left it in GPS mode (which is the default). This time I waited for the little green circle to say I had a lock before starting. It took a good 15, maybe 20 seconds.

I started it and RunKeeper (phone only) within a few seconds of each other. This is pretty interesting...

    Garmin 935:
    Distance: 7.10 mi
    Time: 1:02:41
    Pace: 8:50
    Calories: 843
    Elev Gain: 292 ft

    RunKeeper
    Distance: 7.06
    Time: 1:02:41
    Pace: 8:53
    Calories: 986
    Elev Gain: 510

    Strava
    (via sync of Gramin data)
    Distance: 7.10 mi
    Time: 1:02:41
    Pace: 8:50
    Calories: 1,131
    Elev Gain: 292 ft

So the fact that Gramin and Strava exactly match in most stats is not a surprise (it is sync'd data), but the wild swing in calories is humorous. So many people rely on that data and there is a 25% swing in that data in those three readings along. *sigh* The Garmin is probably closer to reality.

    ANYWAYS

The Time, Distance, and Pace measurements between the what the phone's GPS recorded and the Garmin are close enough to call the same (there was not a lot of precision of my starting and stopping) but the elevation difference is pretty interesting. So Garmin has an option to correct elevation based on the professional surveys. When I do that the Garmin gives 624 feet, which is even more than RunKeeper (which just records what it gets from the phone's GPS). Hmmm.

I have run that route many times with small variations and it always in the 500-700 foot range (there are several large hills that I have to skip when time is tight like I did today)

So I did another check. According to my weather station, my elevation is 1120.1 feet. According to my Garmin watch, my elevation is 1219. That is over 100 feet of difference when you consider I am sitting in a chair and the weather station is on a post at least 15 feet up.

    Hmmmm.

Not sure what to make of that. Need run more I guess

Time, Pace, Distance, and HR all agree with the numbers I saw on my AppleWatch so I am happy with it just not sure about that altimeter yet.

Overall very happy with it so far, and if I have to flip the switch to correct elevation, I am fine with that. At least it is an option.

Oh yea, the silly thermometer in it is as useless as everyone in the reviews says it is. Off by more than 30 degrees F  The common belief is that it is being thrown off by the heat from your skin is probably correct.

@7lenny7 -- good points, thanks for clarifying. As you said, probably not necessary in this area, but still looking like I might go with the mittens.

I wish I were more adventurous in trying some runs on some of the great trails around here. Have fun w/ your daughter... Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Yes, need more data! Sorry, the statistician in my head kept screaming "sample size of at least 30, please", so I had to let her win and make this comment.

My latest purchase for winter running when it gets REALLY cold, golf mittens:

    https://www.amazon.com/ProActive-Sports-Winter-Pull-Up/dp/B0049RPD2U

I'll wear these over my running gloves. I should be able to regulate the temperature of my hands pretty well in these. I love that my thumbs won't have to be all by themselves, getting lonely.

What running gloves are you using under them? I assume you have to get the large to fit them over gloves?

@PastorVincent I have three pair of gloves I use of different weight, but the ones I use most of the time are the cheap, thin, touch-screen compatible gloves that Costco sells. Great gloves for running, and most of the time they are warm enough by themselves but some days I need something warmer.

One thing I don't like about wearing mittens, as @rusgolden mentioned about regular gloves, is that they get sweaty and gross. With these, it looks like I can flip them open from time to time as needed for ventilation.

The reviews indicate that they're sized big. I normally wear XL or even XXL gloves and I'm trying the L golf mitts. These will only be used for running so I'm not too concerned about size since I run with my hand in a loose fist anyway.

The two KEY features about these mitts which appeal to me is first, that there is no separate place for your thumb. You're basically putting bags over your hands. This keeps your thumb warmer.

Second, there's a slit across the finger area to allow you to put your hand through the slit and push the mitts up your arm while you take your shot in golf, as shown in the second photo. In my case it could be using my phone, tying my shoes, or just cooling off my hands. Temperature regulation is key in the winter and this allows that. that slit also allows me to use them to keep my wrists warm. With my long arms that's another area which can get to cold when the temperature plummets.

I face a problem with my gloves is that when I start they are not really warm enough, but as I run and sweat my hands get hot - but I know if I take them off I will never get them back on as they are soaked inside. Wet hands in sub-freezing temps is not fun. With this thingy of yours, I might be able to get away with much lighter gloves. Definitely something to consider.

I have been so massively busy at work and home that I haven't commented and just now got caught up. I didn't listen and pay attention to all of you and should have not done the race on Sat. I did however shave 2 minutes off my last 5k time and got a cool finisher medal. But now, I'm out until I see the dr tomorrow. Hopefully, just a little strength issue and some PT will help. Not sure if it's hamstring or piriformis issue. Either way, it hurts to walk or sit. Running actually doesn't hurt at all. Weird huh? Anyway, here's the medal. Pretty excited about my time.4kh78ow822kc.jpg

That medal is sooo cool. Hope it's nothing serious and you get sorted at the Dr's.

Wow - 161 messages in just 24 hours! I had look thru quickly to see if some big emergency occurred. Nope, just keeping junk and bits warm, Forerunner issues and lots of talk. No time for me this year with my new prep (AP Computer Science Principles).

I teach computer programming - have for 19 years at both a high school and college. Before that I was a programmer. I only teach half the day at the HS and do a bunch of database queries, reports and whatever needs getting done the rest of the day.

I think I will do the Holiday Streak again. Yeah, I know last year I said I wouldn't do it again, but it's kind of fun -- even if my legs feel like bricks after my long bike rides. That being said, if the weather is hot in Orlando in December like it has been the last two years, then no - I'm not doing it. By the time I can run on Sat/Sun after cycling it was already 85 or so.

So did lots of reading on the Garmin 935 altimeter, and the short version, it uses barometric pressure for measuring altitude and is not hugely reliable. So the recommendation is to turn on the corrections and go with that. So that is what I will do.
