Hi Gals,
Terry - My bookclub read the Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane – and we really liked it.
Janet – wow guess you didn’t need an alarm clock
Gpurvis63 - 10 lbs a month is a lot, are you doing it with logging, are you eating back your exercise calories?
Joyce – Just ask her how she feels about it and listen, don’t judge, don’t interrupt, just listen and ask questions to get information – open ended gentle questions…. And let her know you love her and would always be available….
Machka – surrounding you and DH in good thoughts and peace
Heather – Edie is so cute!
Barbara – no silver bullet, but for me good arch support (even in slippers) was critical – No bare feet, no socks, only arch support, this was before I found this group, and sense then Heather has shared the arch support that comes with a band to hold it in place so that might work under socks, I think she found it on Amazon.
Financial Planning/investing – I have done some with my 401K money, and after doing some research decided on a planner that charges an annual fee, not a commission on trades, I feel I have done much better that way as he looks for the best deal for me, not the best deal for him!
Yesterday was my garden club’s plant sale, it’s a huge fund raiser we all raise plants from seeds and cuttings in our yards, and the first or second Saturday of April we take over a high school parking lot and sell, sell, sell ! Set up starts at 6am –“doors” open at 9 am and we close at 11am, we make about $7,000, there are 4 possible shifts, but I just work it all, set up, then help with edibles the whole time we are open and then clean up. I was EXHAUSTED! But it was a well earned tired. There are snacks but they are usually very sweet, I did ok, not great, but ok. It poured rain all night and all most all of set up but at 8:45am the clouds broke and we had a sunny sale! We’ll hear Thursday night at our meeting how we did financially.

Thank you Mary. The party was at my husband's ex wife and her husband's house. It's always a bit uncomfortable for me but was well worth to be there for Olivia. The ex told my husband "not to die because he was her retirement". Just a little insight to this woman's nature. Oh my.
Janetr OKC2 -
Hello ladies: Had a good day today but forgot my fitbit this morning so no idea how many steps I really got today. The Snohomish men's choir sang at our church today, they were really good. Later DD, DH and I went to see A Wrinkle in Time. It was quite good but now I need to read the book again. I invested with W&R when I was working at the hospital. My adviser makes a small percentage on what I make so he is motivated to make money for me. I lost some in 2008-9 but have recouped that plus more. He worked for SS for a while so I feel he is quite knowledgeable about retirement. We are doing well on retirement for both DH and I plus both our Social Security.
Beth - Hope DOS is doing better.
Machka - I think you need all the information to make the best decisions for your DH not just what they choose to tell you. Sending healing angels your way.
Love all the pictures.
Everyone take care, Sue in WA5 -
Wendy in the Lady pic it looks as though she's leaning into you just like a Rottweiler. Is she? Cuts on her face, from the fall into the trailer? "trust is ... undermined when they withhold information" well said! :noway: Misguided kind intent at best. Hope Machka will channel you when she reminds them she is her DH's voice and asks for those records. Belated Happy Birthday!
Barbara, the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD.
Yes Barbara you're right. Lady pressed her forehead into me seeking reassurance when that strange new thing happened and a human got on her back. I told her how wonderful she was and what a good girl and then it was all okay. Her pretty face was cut up when the ex-neighbour spent three hours trying to force her into a trailer. I will have to fix that traumatic experience in a little while and replace it with making the trailer her Happy Place. Meanwhile I am treating her cuts with zinc/emu oil. One is very close to her eye and she is lucky she wasn't blinded. I wish people would teach their horses how to load instead of trying to force them on when they are in a hurry to go somewhere. I wish people would get educated first before trying to work with horses. It would be far less traumatic for all parties and the world would be a better place. Okay, hopping off my bandwagon.
Oh I feel such sorrow for the loss of so many young lives in the Canadian Hockey tragedy. Sometimes you just have to ask Why Lord?

Janetr Oh gosh your husband's ex sounds like a piece of work.
That little Olivia is a beauty!. Oh my goodness, she is going to be a heartbreaker, isn't she? Is that what you looked like at 4?
Sue in WA Is W & R Waddell & Reed? I think there is a branch here in Virginia & they have a good reputation. I am interested in finding someone like Kim mentioned, that charges an annual fee rather than a commission on sales. Brokers, it seems to me, have a conflict of interests.
Lanette Yes, you accurately described basic Crocs. They have a lot of styles, but those garden clog style shoes are the originals and the least expensive. Like Beth, they were the cure for my plantar fasciitis, far better than Mephistopheles which cost 10 times as much and didn't feel nearly as cushy. You really can't wear orthotics with Crocs. I threw my orthotics away once I started wearing Crocs. I am NOT SUGGESTING that other people throw away their orthotics, LOL!!! Keep us posted about your CBD/THC experiment. I wonder if you put CBD oil on the bottoms of your feet if it would cure plantar fasciitis. "Walking On Clouds" LOL!
I think it was Mary who mentioned something about capital gains rules on your primary residence. It wasn't me.

Hi,
I'm in Melbourne, Australia.
I went backwards in my weigh loss journey in March and plan on turning it around in April.
Cooking for athletes who were eating high carb foods was my biggest challenge but I'm back to normal cooking now and off to a good start.
Goal for April, to loose what I gained in March (too scared to look at the scales but my pants are tight )
Keep swimming every day and walk a couple of times a week.
Eat more vegetables. I like them, so that's half the battle.
Looking forward to getting to know you all.
Michelle
(achieved 39 pd loss over 18 months. Can do it again)

welcome Michelle
Hello Monday I'm signing up for the new gym today, DH will as well, but the gym closer to his work he thinks. He likes my strategy of heading straight there from work, no diversions. He is realizing that he's got to move more every day, as opposed to just playing soccer 2x per week. I am pushing him to keep moving and he's pushing me to keep moving! A good thing.
Didn't grocery shop this weekend so I'm short on fruit and veg, so we'll see how I do with meal planning today, off I go to pack meals, gym clothes and clean up the trunk of my car which has all my work papers strewn about willy-nilly Have a great one everybody.

For those who might have missed it, this was my first post about my husband. On March 22, he was working on the net over one of the orchards, and the cherry picker he was in toppled. It is hard to tell exactly what happened because he got out of the bucket, and then laid down. That's how he was found ...My husband is in an induced coma in Intensive Care and has been for the past 48 hours or so. They're going to keep him in the induced coma for at least another 60 hours ... they keep pushing it out.
He had a fall at work, hit his head, and there was bleeding on the brain. His coworkers possibly saved his life by acting quickly with first aid. He was airlifted into town, and rushed into surgery. They had trouble getting ahold of me, and I got there just before they took him into surgery. They let me walk up with them, then told me to tell him I love him and good bye.
That was about 48 hours ago.
Fortunately the surgery went well. Basically they installed a monitor to keep an eye on the pressure in the brain. If the pressure had been a lot, they would have had to remove half his skull, but it fell within the normal range (although high normal), and so they've opted to install this monitor and put him into an induced coma for some time.
Yesterday they had him lightly sedated, and he was showing good movement on his left side, but less so on his right. Today they decided to put him into deep sedation. I just need to trust that the neurologists are doing the best they can for the best outcome.
They've warned me that there's a good chance his speech will be affected, and possibly also behaviour. I'm hoping that maybe because the pressure isn't too high the effects won't be too bad.
I've been spending long periods of time in the hospital, not eating (I've lost 2 kg in 3 days) and sleeping fitfully. I do come home each night, but it's just so sad here without him. I miss him so much.
The next month ... or more maybe? ... are going to be very uncertain.
He was kept in an induced coma for about 2 weeks, and then they started reducing his sedation. However, he wasn't progressing as well as they had hoped so they decided to do the tracheotomy. In the last few days, I've found out that my husband has fractured cheekbones and a fractured bone at the base of his skull. I also think his nose might be broken or something too. They knew about those fractures but opted not to tell me. Evidently they've been a minor concern so they weren't worrying about them before, but now they need to start doing something because he may start feeling pain.
Therefore they are planning a tracheotomy today, hopefully, to insert his breathing tube there. That will ease the pressure on his face and should help him start to wean off the ventilator.
His progress is very, very slow ... but yesterday he did have his eyes open most of the time I was there. Whether or not he can see/focus, who knows.
They've warned me that when he has this next surgery, he will take a big step back in the progress for a few days. But I hope the surgery goes well, and that he will start making some good progress over the next week. Hope.
And continued thank you to you all.
He has had the tracheotomy and it went well. Now, of course, he's back to coming out of sedation again.
And just to clear up a few things ...
My husband is not being treated by an MD. He is in Intensive Care, and is being treated by 3 teams of specialists ... the ICU specialists, the neurosurgical team, and now a team of ear, nose and throat specialists. There are roughly 15 specialist doctors checking on him once or twice every day. Plus, since he is in Intensive Care, he has his own nurse 24-hours a day.
Also, the doctors were not keeping anything from me or trying to protect/spare me. When my husband arrived in Emergency, they had to prioritise his situation. First thing was saving his life. Next they needed to ensure that there was no secondary damage to his brain ... hence the induced coma and brain monitor ... and they needed to keep him alive while that was going on.
Fractured bones were so far down the list, they didn't matter at all during the first couple weeks. In fact, him being still because of the sedation meant that they could just start healing themselves. So they've had 2.5 weeks of healing already. However, now that he is starting to wake and move a bit, he may be in a bit of pain. So there were 2 reasons for the tracheotomy, one was to improve his breathing and prevent damage from the breathing tubes, and the other was to get all the stuff that holds the tubes in place off his face. They explained all this to me and I'm not upset about it ... I'm glad they prioritised the things the way they did.
The thing is, I'm into data, I'm not a doctor ... I'd rather have 15 specialists make the decisions!Machka ((hugs)) do you think he can hear you? What do you do when you run out of things to say?
It's really hard to tell ... sometimes he seems to focus, other times not. I read parts of books to him, tell him about my day, talk about things I watched on TV, read news articles to him ... today I discussed my course and what I was thinking of doing for my homework projects.
One of the doctors explained this current situation to me this way ... one day to the next, I may not see any changes or any significant changes, but as we go along, if I look back a week or two, I'll see the differences. A week ago, he wasn't opening his eyes ... now he is.
Meanwhile, I'm progressing with university and taking care of all sorts of paperwork and errands in between time at the hospital. The last three days I've also got in decent walks each day which was nice.

Good morning all! Happy Monday! Busy weekend. The usual; grocery shopping, errand running, food prep, meal making and taking to the inlaws, house cleaned, paperwork started...and suddenly, here I am and it's Monday. Kind of an "ugh" feeling this morning. I woke up to a period! Can you believe it?! I haven't had one in well over a year and here it is again! Luckily, I had some supplies in my cupboard for when DD visits. But, just, Ugh! Not sure if it is because of that or because I am tired, or maybe because it is Monday; but I really wish I was small enough to just jump in my coffee cup and soak in the caffeine, warmth, and snooze a little longer in the java pool. On the upside, I weighed in and lost another two pounds! YIppee! So I am down to 228!
Welcome Michelle- We have a few ladies from down under who post regularly here and have found their own special spot in our hearts. Sounds like you are in a place you have been before and as you said; you CAN do this!
Janet- Olivia is adorable! I love that little side-glance she is giving the camera! She looks like she is up to something!
BArbara- The peanut sauce is pretty simple: 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1/2 cup mayonnaise, 1/2 cup soy sauce (reduced sodium), 1/4 cup brown sugar, five cloves of minced garlic and 1/4 cup lemon juice. I subbed yogurt for the mayo and it turned out fine. Whisk it all together until creamy and refrigerate for two hours to thicken. This makes a LOT of thai sauce (about two cups), but it keeps really well in the fridge and is tasty on raw veggies, too. My DH is not a veggie fan, but he will eat SOME veg if he has a dip.
Plantar fasciitis- I suffer from it now and again. Since I have gained more weight it has been a daily issue. I wear shoes in the house because of it. It does go away after I have dropped some weight, but in the meantime; YES! Roll a frozen bottle of water under your arches, roll a tennis ball under your arches, do foot, ankle, and calf strengthening exercises. Swimming helps. I used to go out and buy new shoes, but have instead bought arch supports like the ones Heather mentioned. Getting out of bed is the worst, though! I tend to hobble for the first few minutes of the day until my muscles stretch out and warm up and until I get my shoes on. The more active I am during the day, the less it bothers me.
Warm thoughts and prayers for strength for all who need them! Special hugs to Machka! ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)3 -
Machka - I am glad to hear how you are doing in addition to how your hub is doing. It is strange, I was just explaining to my husband yesterday what the latest is with your hub. After your last update, I took things differently than others have. I took it as you just explained it, not that they were withholding vital information, but that they were working on the most serious injuries first and the others would come later. I am glad to hear that you are coping as well as can be expected, or even better it sounds like, with your present situation. Know that all of us are thinking of you both constantly.
My prayers continue to be with you, your hub and his team of specialists

Good morning Ladies -
Well, I did it! I have made it to my goal!! I am MFP officially in maintenance. I have set myself a 5 lb range to stay in, because let's face it, I can swing 5 lbs of water if I travel, have my period, eat high sodium, etc. I don't want to drive myself nuts with being "over" my goal, hence, my 5 lb comfort zone. Now to do it, that will be the hard part.
Hubs was gone over the weekend so I didn't eat out any. Actually, I haven't left my house since Friday when I got the car serviced and went to the grocery store. While I was at the store, I bought some watermelon and cantaloupe thinking I would have all weekend and week (and maybe part of next weekend) to eat it. Wrong. Hubs isn't coming home again this coming weekend. I got the bright idea to fly out to see him. It doesn't hurt that my BF lives there so I can see her too . I am going to fly out Thursday morning and she will pick me up. I will stay with her Thursday night while hub is still at his hotel. We will meet him for dinner most likely. Then on Friday, if he only has to work a few hours on Sat he will join us at her house for the weekend. If he has to work all day Sat he will probably just meet us for dinner again and stay at the hotel (which is 2 min from work, vs 40 min from her house) and then join us Sat night at her house. Her hub (who is my hubs BF) will be out of town, so she is thrilled to have us there to keep her company. Back to the fruit, so, all this wonderful fruit I bought, has to be eaten before I leave. I have been having a fruit plate with greek yogurt (gotta get my protein) every night for dinner and will be until I leave .
I have been in a bit of a funk that has made my TMJ have a very small flare up. I noticed I was gritting my teeth so I have been wearing my bite guard all day. It took me several days to realize the reason was it was the anniversary of my Dad's death. Of course, I knew it was coming, I just didn't put together that my teeth gritting had to do with that. I wouldn't really call it stress, more tension I think, but that makes me grit my teeth apparently. At least I have figured out that these events are trigger points and I can try to be proactive about them.
Plantar fasciitis-It's weird that so many of you have found success with Crocs. My hub wears Crocs around the house all the time. When he had PF, that's the number one thing his Dr told him to do, throw away the Crocs. He told him not to ever wear them again. He did the things that have been mentioned, rolled the frozen water bottle, the tennis ball, wore the L shaped foot brace (for part of the night) and took Aleve. He never goes barefoot anyway, so that wasn't a problem. The boy will barely walk from the shower to his sink barefoot . He also wore the elastic bands under his socks. One he got it "healed", he went back to his Crocs and wears them around the house again all the time. When I had it, it wasn't near as bad as his. It only took me about a month to feel normal again. I was better about wearing the brace than him though. I do struggle with going sock footed though. I spend 99% of my time at home in socks with grippers on them. Heck, half the time I walk to the shop in my socks. Drove my Mom nuts when I was a kid. Now I buy my own socks so no one cares!
OK, didn't mean to write a book. Sorry Ladies! Have a great day!

Machka Glad your husband's tracheotomy went well, and that you are taking walks and progressing with university. Once your husband is awake again, he may surprise you by remarking on something you have read to him, or told him about! Brain healing is remarkable, but agonizingly slow, and somewhat unpredictable. So sorry for what you and your husband are going through. It sounds as if he has a lot of highly competent experts making the crucial decisions. (((Hugs)))

Machka - Thanks for the update. I think about you a lot.
This morning I contacted a couple of publicity outlets. I don't have great hopes because I haven't had much success publicising stuff in the past, but at least I've tried. Then I did some editing until I went boss eyed! There are always more mistakes! Then I have to remember to back it up. I'm neurotic about it.
Hope to run this pm. The lanes are wet, wet, wet. The wettest spring in ages. So grey and gloomy.

Machka - thank you for those updates! I am so glad your DH is in a hospital that is close enough that you can visit him regularly and still keep up with your work and school. Sounds as though he's in the best place he could possibly be with the best experts and care team. That has to be a relief.

We live in a small city, so lots of things are fairly close. The hospital is a couple blocks from where I work and a bit further from the uni. Although I am keeping up with uni, I have been off work since the accident and I'm not sure when I'll return but I might start working half days soon.
And yes, although part of me would like to take charge of the situation, I have had to let go and trust the experts. The first couple weeks, in particular, were a long and complicated process getting everything just right, minute by minute, for the best possible outcome they could manage.

Finished my run. I played Leonard Cohen on my phone as I ran. It reminded me of my university days when I used to sit in my girlfriend's room listening to her love woes as she played his record over and over. I'm still in touch with her. Then I played a couple of Irish bodhran tunes.

Machka- (((hugs))) and prayers for you and your husband. It sounds like he is getting exceptional care. You sound like you are doing amazing under these circumstances. Let us know if you need anything from us.
Heather - you are quite the inspiration! Congratulations on your book! I hope everything goes well with the publishers!
Okie - Congratulations on hitting your goal! There are many of us on maintenance here that can help you with advice if needed.
I myself have a little different type of maintenance since I am in the process of recomposition. I have been doing what is called a bulk where you eat slightly above maintenance so that you can build muscle and strength. I have a 10 pound gain window that I stay within. Today is the start of my cut cycle. Now I will lose that 10 pounds and will probably go down in fat content and up in muscle content. One important note is that I have not gone up in size at all. Although I do have some visible fat which they call fluff around my stomach that I did not have prior to starting. Which was to be expected. You can also see larger muscles and greater muscle definition as well. Today I start my three week Keto challenge which I know will lose that 10 pounds probably within the first two weeks. When I eat a keto diet fat melts off my body very quickly. Now to get up and do my exercises and prep for the day!
Have a great day everyone!
