HEATHER got your book on Kindle this morning. It is so very well written and evocative. You have reminded me of so many things from childhood, the games, songs, food, books. I have very scant memories of my very happy childhood, maybe because of your relationship with your father you stored all the good things very carefully. Enjoying it so much but feeling sorry for that little girl.

HEATHER couldn't stop reading until I finished it. I've rated 5 stars on Amazon and Goodreads, I'm not very good at writing reviews but will sit and have a think and come up with one. I love your descriptions of everyday life but the underlying menace is still there.

Heather - Ordered your book onto my Kindle, hope to get time to read it soon, and will post a review after. After reading the quick look, I was totally intrigued. As always, you inspire me.

Rye - had to go back, as my skimming yesterday missed your photos. Your silhouette is how I aspire to look... and I, too, have never been able to wear boots higher than my ankle. They still don't make wide calf cowboy boots--I've always simply cut a triangle out of the leather at the back to keep them from rubbing my calf. I always wear them with jeans anyway.

Which reminds me - we checked out a Savers store here, a sort of charity shop, but massive, aisle after aisle of clothes... and I picked up a couple pairs of jeans the next size down. Haven't even tried them on yet, but one pair was $5 and one was $4, so I figured it was worth the risk! The scale showed me down another pound this morning, 19 pounds lost now since January 24, very pleased with that. Hoping to get past that 20-pound mark before I go a-traveling at the end of next week. Looking forward even more to being in single digits, and feel that it really is a possibility.

Even if it is quite a ways off, very much something to look forward to.

Also picked up a charging station for five bucks, so I can hide some of the wires in a box and charge three items at a time.

Popping up to Fayetteville, AR, this morning to get our son, and bring him back down with to Fort Smith for a couple days. Haven't seen him for a bit over a year, can't wait to hug his neck. We'll be up and back before the furniture gets delivered today, then tomorrow sometime, the washer/dryer, fridge and small chest freezer will be in. Life just gets better and better!

And for those looking for them, Joyce did post on Facebook last night, and DJ also posted on Facebook yesterday morning. Losing Gloria so unexpectedly puts us all on tenterhooks, I think, when one of us doesn't post in a bit. Speaking of which... Dana, if you're checking in on the thread, and you're ever over Fort Smith way, let me know!

HeatherUK- I downloaded on Kindle. Started reading. I love being able to "see" your garden and yard. Just started, but work calling my name. Am anticipating reading more. Thank you for letting us know!

I also downloaded "Younger Next Year for women". Started that one last night. Thank you for the recommendation.

Heels and boots....I love anytime I get to wear them! Of course, I don't get to dress up for work, so love any chance to get prettyfied.

Barefoot is my general footwear at home. Tennis shoes or nurses clogs for work. Heels or boots with dresses most other times. I think people at car shows think it is a religious reason I am in dresses, but it is simply that I wear jeans all week long, and find dresses cooler and pretty.

As for renters just replacing carpet when leaving, most of the time they can barely afford the rent. They are responsible for proffesionally cleaning it prior to leaving. In this case it was time to replace it due to wear, but was also trashed by dog. My concern if they replace carpet is the quality of the carpet and install. Rentals definitely are a learning process. So many around us don't allow pets at all. We know that pets are an important part of people's lives, but found they are more diligent in caring for the home if they pay extra .

I am hotspot at home. Alexa can be a data hog! I can't wait to get actual internet! We live in the rural blackout zone. It has been promised this year. Expensive to run to house as we are 1000 feet from road, but paying for extra data on hotspot box isn't cheap either. My DH obviously doesn't pay the bills, he was shocked when I told him how much we pay for direct TV, cell phones, house phone, and hot spot. I take my laptop to the shop every few months to let it update. Also have to turn off wireless on printer as it too is a data hog.

I really should get ready for work. I enjoyed my massage last night and got to grocery! Hair color tonight. Will pull up Rye's photos at work.

Have a warm day! I will think of ya'll and smile to make my own sunshine. We have had more measurable snow days in April than any other April on record!

Drinking my coffee before I head outside to run the snowblower! Waaaa!! Our "snow shower" turned into a full blown snow dumping ... 5 inches of heavy wet stuff.

Rye ~ You look great! Your father sounds like he has probably lived a wonderful life traveling to all those places to pursue his hobby of climbing.

Beth ~ I can’t imagine all the snow you and NY Karen and many more of our Northern chatters are dealing with. I bragged that Spring had sprung over the weekend as it was in the high 70’s. But, yesterday it went down to the 30’s and was icy cold.

Kylia ~ Sorry if this is too much information.
When our last renters left we had to buy one of those machines that gets rid of cigarette smell and ran it for several days. Very expensive. Then we had to replace broken bedroom doors, make repairs in the baths (they moved all the towel bars and didn’t fix the sheet rock), new carpet, new blinds, new screens, painted the entire house inside, replaced a missing fire alarm, repaired the garage door, and a new roof & A/C system (which was needed). We couldn’t charge them for the damage because they had to be evicted after not paying the rent for 2-1/2 mos. When we got all that done, we hired a real estate company to find a new renter and she seems to be very good and responsible.

Heather ~ I will be ordering your book for my Fire tablet but must admit that it takes me forever to read a book. So, I probably will not be commenting on it for a while. I know it will be very successful.

For the last two nights I have slept fitfully and tossed and turned for hours....left side, back, right side and repeat all over again. When I finally get up, I feel like I have been beaten. Told DH that tonight I will get out of bed and stay up if it happens again. May take some melatonin but notice that I have a head ache the next day if I take it.

I walked 31 km last week, or rather, walked 28.6 km and ran 2.4 km.

So yes, I am exercising ... somewhat ... even if I'm not always logging it on MFP these days.

I’m sorting things out and trying to get my life together again.

My husband is out of sedation and is making small improvements each day. He’s breathing on his own all the time, and swallowing on his own some of the time. He’s also moving all limbs at last, and his head, so he’s not paralysed. But the movements are quite random. It’ll be a long process.

Hello all. Hope it’s not too late to join this group. I’m 51 and a hot mess lately. Let myself go the last few years and keep trying to get on track and fail. I work full time, have two teenagers (16 son home, 18 daughter in college) and deal with a lot of stress with health issues with my mom and husband. These issues definitely put me in a funk and I need to get out of it. I’m hoping this app and group support will help!

Just learned yesterday my grandson is in hospital with partial smAll bowel obstruction. He was a preemie and had several surgeries on his intestines. He is 15 now and runs track. Please say a prayer or good wishes for Connor.

My DFIL out like a light today .. he was cantancorous all day yesterday.. sleeping it off today..
went over to attorneys to drop stuff off for my dads estate lawyer and will see her tomorrow to sign the quick claim deed to the house. sort of bittersweet.. but alas I will have my own place soon, Tom said he will have the house paid off when he is 97

will stop up at my brothers tonight after I get out to pick up the will and drop that off when I go tomorrow..
didnt sleep well last night. my mind was working overtime..
Alfie going to groomer thursday am and I go for a haircut... will have the dgd with me overnight weds night and during the day thursday. and friday is mom and daughter day as we have to get things done for the wedding.

Kylia: We had the chirping smoke detector again today. It is hardwired. There is a battery operated one right next to it. We changed that battery, and the hardwired detector quit chirping. Could it have been letting us know about the low battery? We're planning to call the fire department during regular business hours and ask. :grumble:

Machka: Thanks for checking in! It is encouraging to see that your DH is making progress and is able to move. Yay!!!

Has anyone heard from Wendy lately?

Our fire alarm chirped yesterday and again this morning. We have two alarms, side by side. One is battery operated while the other is hard wired. The hardwired one has been doing the chirping. DH had a thought that the hardwired one might be reporting about the battery one. He changed the battery and the hard-wired one stopped chirping. We'll put a call into the local fire department during business hours this morning to ask if there is more we need to do. Right now it is 6:30 am, so we have a couple of hours to wait.

Yo peeps- today is Kirbys appointment with the neurologist- I told him to ask about the b-12 and to tell him all the exercises he does and it suggests that he either stop doing some or start doing some that he may not be doing now. Told him to call me so he can put his phone on speaker and I can listen.

Good morning! I was scrolling the forum and found this group. Thought I'd jump in if that's okay.
I'm 56 and was just told I need a knee replacement. I'm overweight and the doctor won't touch me unless I get to a BMI of 35 or less. That's at least a 40 lb weight loss. I'm not bitter as he was right and I've known for years I needed to lower my weight, but that doesn't make it any easier. I've had to quit one of my jobs as it was too physically stressful and a likely the cause of my recent escalating knee pain issues.
Soooooo, I'm back at it, trying to better control my pain so I can start exercising more, and trying to ignore those between meal hunger pangs that nag me. UGH!
Hope there's someone out there who can understand the scope of my issues. Thanks for reading!

I turned 56 last month and I feel like these last two years I have become less and less active. It doesn't feel good and I want to change that. I tend to get carried away with goals and perfectionism and then quitting when I'm not "perfect" enough...so I'm starting simple -

April goals

remove two pounds by logging every bite and staying at my calorie goal
lift weights 3 times a week for 20 minutes
log 8 glasses of water everyday

Renters I lived most of my life ( or at least 1/2) as a renter. A few observations from that perspective.

If a ‘replace carpet’ fee or clause was part of the deal we would have walked away. We would have been (and were) overjoyed, however to find a rental with hard wood or vinyl ‘hard floor look’ flooring. Wall to wall carpeting and cats didn’t/ don’t mix well.

I never did not get back 100% deposit, but i scrubbed floors/ vacuumed and cleaned Kitchen but don’t recall cleaning blinds/windows/ceiling lights/fans or mirrors so I bet the owner/rental company had to clean up after me. One time in a rental apartment my husband was angry and punched his fist through a very flimsy closet door. We purchased spackle, fixed and repainted the door. By the time we left a year later you couldn’t tell.

We actually were quite ideal tenants except for the cats. (At one point we had FIVE cats). Just after we got married we rented out the second floor of a large duplex (owners, an elderly couple lived below us). We had lived there five years when they told us they were thinking of selling and moving. At that point we took on some of the household chores (the main reason they wanted to sell) like yard work and snow shoveling. We lived there six more years. When we moved out we hired a cleaning service to make the place spic and span top to bottom (that service probably cost us a months’s rent but after 11 years we thought it was the right thing to do). That apartment did have hard wood floors, so no carpet replacement was necessary.

That was the ideal situation though, we became good friends with the owners, and if there was a problem ( leak or something broke- they were motivated to fix it ASAP because they lived in the property too.

But from a renters perspective I’ve been in nightmare rental situations too. Floods (from poor landscaping) broken fixtures taking weeks to get fixed. Shared rental laundry facilities that were never cleaned and sometimes just didn’t have functioning appliances, Hallways that may have seen a vacuum once every 6 months, strewn garbage on the lawn etc. and the one where the refrigerator died and the landlord wouldn’t replace it! The one that the apartment building had shared heat and my apartment was routinely 85+ degrees all winter. The one where the heat was radiators that clicked and banged louder than you could imagine all night long in cold months. And I don’t think I ever had a rental where every electrical outlet actually worked (oh, my that is worrisome now that I think about it).!

All rentals (apartments and houses) we saw in Chicago had all appliances included (except washer dryer- it was a rare rental that even had wash/dry hookups). But in Texas, all the rentals we saw (houses only) included stove, but not refrigerators. Anyone’s guess if there was washer/dry hookups and/ or appliances. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

I never encountered pet fee monthly. But one or two extra months deposit was often required. (And always returned).
