8/25 6.2 10K Chupacabra Trail Race
42 of 70 miles
Ran the last in the 4 part series of trail races here. Today's "short" race was a 10K, the long was a half. The elevation wasn't nearly what the last one was. This race would have been a complete fun fest to run if I didn't wipe out just past mile 2 and cut up both knees and my hands and arm. All I could think was not my ribs!! They seem fine, my knees are both swollen. I wanted to finish in 1:30 or under and I finished in 1:26 so I was happy with that.
This is the final medal, the holder, you can string all 4 medals through.
I really need to try to catch up on 222 posts.

26hour, 20 minute MFP Virtual Relay For Dennis.
There has been a thread created with a link to a sign up sheet. It is scheduled to run 3pm Central October 13 thru 420pm October 14th.
As a tribute, I'd like to see the first and last hours (or half hours) run as a group. All of us, honoring him simultaneously. Maybe just a mile in the first and last hours celebrating the first marathon he ran, and his last.
Unplanned that that landed an end time of 420. Perhaps its inline with his humor, running is our drug/therapy/escape/way to cope.
I created a column for those that need/want help figuring the time slot. Just include name. time zone and time youd like, others or myself will put you in the correct GMT slot.
There are still many times available.
Run on Dennis
Okay, all those numbers took a lot of googling for me to sort out, but I think I've signed up for all currently-vacant slots that I could conceivably run. That is the weekend before my half-marathon and I have no idea what sort of "taper" I'd want to be doing at that point, but had been planning on running at least a moderately long distance that weekend. The beginning and end hour hours should work too. Thank you for doing all this organizing!2 -

I was in bed for almost 8 hours last night, felt like I slept only a few. Didn't run again this morning because of it.
@skippygirlsmom - Ouch!! How in the world did you manage to keep running, complete the race and get an awesome time after wiping out and getting hurt? Wow - You are a beast!!1 -

@rheddmobile Thanks for the additional info on the shoes. Are those road shoes? I run some down hill, and washouts on trails... so they might not be the best shoe for me yet. I loved the bottom of those shoes. I remember that my marathoning dentist loved the fuller stacks. But that makes sense if you are running long miles on pavement.
I had something weird happen to my knee that felt much like a bakers cyst rupture. I'll see the doc monday and see. I suspect with the ITB surgery, the knee is still adjusting. I have zero drop topo's suggested by @shanaber, they have been terrific.
They're trail shoes, but the review I read said they are decent on roads as well. I haven't really run roads in them yet unless you count half a mile or so on the boardwalk, which felt fine but not fast.
What I noticed first after the immediate stinging of my cyst rupture was the calf pain. If it is a rupture, elevating and lightly compressing it may keep it from leaking fluid down into your muscles, which trust me you don't want.
Thanks. It happened a few weeks ago, on a friday so i rested, iced and elevated. (Un)luckily, I remembered your ordeal and took heed. It's just niggling pain currently. the swelling was minimal and on the lower inside of my knee cap. I had a coworker suggest that it could have been a loose body. Hopefully it won't ever be a thing again.
I like that the shoes can be for trail or road. Another golden selling point.0 -
@skippygirlsmom Hope the knees aren't too sore! Trail running can beat you up!
@sarahthes Love the new DO! and race pics! such an inspiration! I think of you when i want to give up. I think "one day I may have the chance to run with that wild child so i better do better and stay focused".1 -

@skippygirlsmom girl, you are one tough mamma! Those knees look painful! I probably would have DNF'd. I bow down to your bloody feet (and knees, arms, hands, etc.)
Thanks for the link @Elise4270. I signed up for 7-8:30am CST (I think)2 -
@skippygirlsmom well done! Way to push through and not be discouraged by a fall!0

Big mileage day for me today, and I succeeded without tripping over my feet and turning into a puddle of goo. One of my longest mileage runs to date. What a journey this is.
As I finished up my 4th mile, I felt amazing - like, "Pfffffft, this is a cake walk. I can definitely go another 4 miles, possibly more!!" Then about a mile and a half later, my brain was screaming at me like, "Okay. You were super comfortable right? LOL. Just kidding. Going to put you through the ringer for a bit and see how you do!"
I love the mental game. LOL. I have some fun conversations internally with myself while running.
So, okay - Bonus + : Made it into work within the alloted time frame I gave them. I wanted to take a nap afterwards, but there was too much to do. I don't know how I've mustered the energy, but I'm pretty pleased.
All of my miles were pretty consistent. I lagged a bit on mile 5 and 6, but gained back the time lost on miles 7 and 8. So, I really can't ask for much more. The weather was awesome, because I got out a bit late and expected it to be a little warmer - but it turns out; it was overcast outside and the sun was hiding my entire run. That really helped.
Going to finish up here at the office and then head home to catch up on the posts here from the past couple of days. Much love to everyone.12 -

c'mon. you can suck it up and go for some runs...1 -
Yesterday, 7.51 miles.
Today, 20.78 miles. I got passed by Kaci Lickteig while she was out on her last run before heading out for UTMB. I tried to keep up with her, but couldn't even come close... maybe someday I'll be that awesome. For now, I'm super slow. I need to build up some speed and distance and I need to lose some weight. From what I can tell, my marathon in 2 weeks is probably going to be somewhere around 5:30.

Yup, I had this thing on my finger, wrist, and chest to measure different things. I was also fitted for a CPAP machine in case that is the issue. My follow up isn't until October because my doc is out all of Sept and I couldn't make the appt on Tuesday due to work stuff. Mayo usually puts the results online so I might be able to look at them prior to the appt.2 -

Thanks! I actually changed shirts before heading out this morning because I had a sudden suspicion light grey would be a bad idea! Here's the full version - red with blue & purple highlights.
I'm super stubborn - that's why I keep going. I've also found a lot of inspiration lately from the below 2 books. I really enjoyed both of them.

I survived my kid’s orientations - boy 3 hours of information overload, but I’m actually excited about starting a new school year! All 3 of my kids will be in school full-time. Everyone keeps asking what I’m going to do with all my ‘free’ time. Why run of course!
This morning I headed out at 7am. 66 degrees degrees felt wonderful! My workout was 60min easy, then 8x 2min at 10k pace, 2min at HM pace, then 20min easy. I ended up at just over 12 miles. I was pretty pleased. Garmin says I PR’d my 10k distance during the run.
I did have a woman lecture me about announcing myself before passing. Seriously? You couldn’t hear me huffing and puffing and feet pounding the sidewalk?

Thanks everyone. The truth is I wanted that last finishers medal ha ha. The downhills were a little tough. They both hurt right now but the right looks like a baseball is sitting where my kneecap was.
I really loved this series.7 -

@amymoreorless I enjoyed the crap out of my run this morning. It is still unbearably hot, humid, and August but for some reason I didn’t feel it this morning. 10 miles at a 10 minutes mile pace - this is speedy for my long runs. I realize this is an easy run for some of you. I haven’t been able to maintain a pace like that on a long run all summer. Before the heat hit I was running 9:30 - 10 minutes miles on the regular. I was starting to worry about how much I was slowing and struggling this summer. My pace dropped to 11:30 - 12 minutes miles. I needed this morning.
So glad you had a good run! That must have been a great feeling. Congrats.
@RunsOnEspresso Sorry to hear the struggles you're going through! I'm inspired by your running and wishing you well!@MegaMooseEsq I've been spending a lot of time thinking about the next six to twelve months and I think that this winter I want to 1) join a gym where I can get barbell training, and 2) find a running group. The Running Room does a half marathon in February and a lot of the stores have training programs related to their various races, so I think that would be worth looking into. I didn't run much last winter but I feel like I'm in a much stronger place now. That said, I think a little guidance and motivation would be helpful in the icy dark.
That's awesome you have a list you want to accomplish. I'm sure you'll do awesome whichever training program you go with. I wish I could do running groups. I tried once, but unfortunately, I was so preoccupied with everyone else and afraid I'd fall behind that I ended up sabotaging myself. So, I learned that running on my own terms provided me more success.
@rheddmobile Awesome shoes! Glad you are enjoying them so far!
@garygse Nice run. I aspire one day to your running pace. That's awesome.
@workaholic_nurse Great splits! Glad you had a great run!
@marisap2010 Congrats on your race and your PR!! Love the medal!
@sarahthes Congrats on your trail race!
@ContraryMaryMary and @PastorVincent I hope you both recover soon and are able to get back out and run soon. Sorry to hear you are both struggling.
@shanaber Wow! What a session you had! That's killer. Congrats on accomplishing you August goal!
@skippygirlsmom That looks like it hurt, and you still managed to rock the rest of that race. Way to go. Sorry about the fall though, ouchies! You are definitely a tough one to pull through that and still beat the time you set out for yourself.4 -
Tonight was my second ever official race, The Glo Run Night Race 5k, so get ready for a novel! I wasn’t totally sure what to expect, but it was a good time. I had three goals: 1) finish, 2) don’t fall, 3) beat my last race time of 32 minutes. And I did all of those things! I was also interested to see how the organization did since they put on a half marathon I'm considering entering, and I was not disappointed in their performance.
Unlike the 4th of July race there was no advance packet pickup, which made me nervous but unnecessarily as it turned out. There were 368 timed finishers and probably another 200 or so people doing the untimed run/walk. Lots of glowing things and dance music, as to be expected. And mosquitos. Fun! I got my bib and swag and stood around awkwardly for a little while until my husband joined me, but less awkwardly than last time, so that’s a win!
Pictured: slightly less awkward standing around waiting for the sun to set.
I realized shortly before starting that while I’d brought my headphone case (and even plugged it in while I got ready for a little extra juice), I had neglected to put my headphones back in the case after gardening earlier in the afternoon. Womp womp. It turned out fine - what with it being dark and an unknown course and a decent number of people I was probably better off without music. That said, I told my husband that if I forget my headphones at the Overland Park 10k next month I’m DNSing without a *kitten* second thought - no way am I running around a Kansas shopping mall twice without tunes.
Pictured: not a *kitten* shopping mall.
We started with a minute of silence for Molly Tibbetts, then off we went. This was more moving than I’d expected, even with the inevitable folks who didn’t get the message and kept chatting. The MC, who was a genuine professional the whole evening, hit a good balance of somber, a touch of outrage, but not so much of a downer that it detracted from the night or felt forced. The message was “no one should run in fear” and “take care of each other”, which I can get behind. And most importantly, none of the gendered BS that too often accompanies these kinds of tragedies.
On to the race! After doing a lot of passing on the 4th of July I decided to place myself further forward and I’m glad I did. The first quarter mile was still a little awkward, but I suspect this is more or less inevitable. I developed a stitch in my side early on that never really went away, although otherwise I didn’t feel like I’d gone out overly fast. The field thinned out pretty quickly but there were always a good number of people and lights around. All of the timed runners were given headlamps which were decently powerful, which was nice. I had to look down slightly more than I’d prefer to get mine to illuminate the path, but again, plenty of other people around. It was nice knowing I had it.
A funny side effect of the headlamps was how clearly different gaits showed up. My light was pretty steady the whole time, while a lot of the taller men in particular were bobbing up and down a lot more. I spent the last couple of miles trading places with a woman around my height whose light kept swinging from side to side, which was a little distracting but hey, distracting isn’t the worst thing in a race.
The stitch probably made the race feel longer than it was, but my watch says it was almost exactly 5K, so there you are. There were big lit-up signs for each half mile that seemed way too far apart, but again, I think that was just me. I’d hoped to start around a 10-10:30 minute mile and work up to a 9 minute or even sub-9 pace, but with the stitch and the dark and all I never really felt up for a burst of speed. I stayed right around 9’50” the whole time and finished in 00:30:40, 1:40 faster than my time at the last race.
I was a little disappointed not to break 30 minutes, but running three sub-ten miles was a good consolation prize - I'd have to check but I think my past record is two, or maybe even just one. AND I got top ten in my category, which is a little silly when we’re talking 9th out of 39, but dang it, it counts and I’m keeping it! I’ve got a pretty good shot at beating that at the 10k in Kansas since last year there were only four women in my division and 50-ish people overall. 5th out of 5 is still top 5 and you won't convince me otherwise!
Overall I was impressed by the organization. The course was clearly marked and decently lit. There was a single water station half-way that did its job just fine, and volunteers (and a few spectators) nicely spaced out cheering us on. I thanked one set of cheerers and made us all laugh with my hilariously tired-sounding voice. Check-in and medal pickup were quick and smooth - only the timed participants got medals so they weren't handing them out at the finish, but the MC was clear about where to go and the line moved fast. There was water at the finish and popsicles next to the medal pickup. And the MC was everything you want an MC to be: cheerful but not manic, easy to hear and understand, and kept the energy going.
My only complaint was not having more food options at the end, but that wasn’t really a big deal. I’m not sure I’ll enter any more 5Ks for the next couple of months as I’m really enjoying running longer distances, but I’m glad I gave this one a go.
