September 2018 Running Challenge

I have a question.
Dh is marathon training.
1) ithink he should have cut back this week on his long run even though his plan said 12-16 miles, (because hes willy-nilly on the weekly runs) i suggested 10-12.. he ran 16-17, exhausted yet determined to prove his ability, he ran/walked another 8. So 24-25 miles today, in the rain on hills. And the last 2 weekends, hes run further than hes accustomed to, by 10+ miles easlily.
2) he said it was hard, but felt okay.. So I'm checking his stats, unfortunately his Garmin isnt swanky enough to give him a lactate threshold value, so i look at his time in zone. 86% of his run (the 16+ miles) was in zone 5. Training effect is obviously 5.0
3) His pace was slower (9-10, rather than 8-9) than usual dispite the cooler temps. But he did run hills
Why was it hard? Why was his HR so high during this run?
I said (naggingly) you should have cut back and you ran to hard today. And it looks like maybe your not recovered, dispite having 5 days off. So theres a question of de-training too. He is like most men, wont listen when i say run daily, even if it is 1-3 miles, cut back... dont eat ketchup haha! Jk Vincent! Gottcha! Another obvious reason could be dehydration, which i havent broached. I know he planted water.. he did take GU.
Without discounting the fact that he is very probably working too hard if he's exhausted after 16 miles, the Garmin zones are likely incorrect for him. Assuming only that he is no faster than me, 16 miles will take more than 2 hours. He wouldn't be able to keep going at a true HR Zone 5 for 2 hours.
Casting aside the HR zones, which are telling you nothing, if he is unable to keep running after 16 miles it's time to stop. The long run is supposed to be slow, easy, and conversational pace. Running hard enough that he has to run/walk after 16 miles, then actually doing the run/walk for another 8, is doing him more harm than good. Tell him this is coming from someone who runs Boston every year, and maybe he'll listen.
In the words of my coach, less is more at this point. You train slower to race faster.6 -
Congratulations everyone who raced today, and good luck everyone who is racing tomorrow!
No running for me today, but I did get running-related news: I said in my last post that I’d missed the deadline to transfer my 5k registration for the Twin Cities Marathon weekend to the 10k, but this wasn’t entirely accurate. I’d actually remembered the day before the deadline but couldn’t figure out how to get the website to work. I sent an email to the address provided but didn’t hear back and figured that was that. But no! Today I got an email saying that I’ve been transferred to the 10K and they waived the transfer fee and the difference in registration price! Awesome!
Of course, I then realized that the 10k starts an hour and a half earlier than the 5K. My husband will love that one. I also signed up to volunteer the next day for gear check at the Marathon finish line and need to be in St. Paul by 6:45 - fun!
I spent today walking around doing a puzzle event called DASH - my phone is only showing about 9k steps, but there were more stairs than I’m used to and my quads are really yelling at me. Add to that 1) a nap that wasn’t - too cold, got distracted buying glasses, and weird free-floating anxiety, 2) the dog peeing on a box of books my mom saved from when I was a kid (the books were okay, but I'm still mad), 3) the cats being especially destructive this evening for whatever reason, and 4) Popeye’s getting my order wrong (the big cat ate more of my too-spicy chicken than I did), and I am in a pretty foul mood.
I’d wanted to bill another hour tonight but I might just need to stretch and go to bed with some Harry Potter. I’m hoping to get a long run in tomorrow morning (with my new water belt!) and being well rested would be nice.
@RunRachelleRun: I’m definitely still planning on seeing an optometrist regularly, but the recommendation for people my age without relevant medical issues is every 3-5 years and that seems about right. One of my aunts went blind at 18 and my sister’s FIL lost an eye to cancer a few years ago, so I definitely know the importance of regular screening. I don't personally feel the need to do it more often without cause, though.
I got my prescription from the online place last night about two hours after I submitted the test - my husband joked that some optometrist probably got a ping, asked themselves if they were good to do a bit of work after three drinks, and went for it. We live in the future! The prescription was almost identical to the one I got in person but recommended going back to the slightly stronger prescription I was using before my last check. As I’ve been unhappy with my distance vision since that check I’m pretty happy with that outcome. I decided to buy two pairs of glasses off of Zenni and see how I like them. If not, I can always use the other prescription.5 -

Short answer - Tell him to grab a reliable plan and stick with it.
Seriously, he is going to get hurt doing that.
Additional commentary: Marathon runners (at least, those who run multiple marathons) are disciplined. If the plan says to run 15 miles, they run 15. They don't run 16. If the plan says 20, they don't run 22. I observed this in experienced marathon runners before I ever ran a marathon, when I was in the mode of proving how far I could run. Guys who really run marathons don't have to prove it every day, or even every week. They only have to prove it on race day.
Obligatory cliches:
- You can't get to the finish line if you don't make it to the start line.
- There are no medals for training runs.11 -

I am not feeling well tonight. I have been busy most of the day prepping for hubby to come home tomorrow (he has been overseas for work for the last 3 months AND tomorrow is his birthday), and this evening I feel super lethargic with somewhat of a stomachache. I got in 2 miles of my planned 4 tonight. I hope to get in 6-7 in the morning.
@marisap2010
Lots happening for you the moment and coming up. Hugs.
Look after yourself, sweetie. There are some nice ideas in the Self-care challenge thread.
Happy birthday to hubby!2 -
Morning all. I'm looking at wireless headphones. I currently have a cheap pair with the receiver about 2-3 inches below the rt ear. It drives me nuts bouncing as I run. So I'm looking for some sports ones and OMG the variety!
I'm looking for ones that have over ear clips for stability (I like that style) with the cable coming out the back of the clip - i find that eliminates tug on the earpiece itself.
I've seen some with the receivers on the earpiece but they look heavy to me. I've also seen "collared" versions, with a flexible collar that sits around your neck, and short cables leading to the ear pieces.
I'm on a tight budget for these and don't really care about the quality of the audio. Who's tried what and what works for you.
My biggest annoyance when running is bounce causing tugging on the earpieces.
@Avidkeo I bought a pair of refurbished wireless AfterShoks on Amazon for a great price. I love having my ears free so I can hear traffic and environmental sounds for safety. I’ve had this pair for 6 months and put them through all kinds of weather / abuse. They are still going strong. You might find a great brand that has a refurbished deal on Amazon?4 -
Sunday long run today - was a perfect day for running, sunny yet cool. I wanted to head out early (7am) and do 12km before meeting my running group for another 8km at 8:15 before coffee and cake, however, for our wedding anniversary (thanks for all the good wishes!) my darling husband bought me a new piano, however, it won't be delivered until our front room is repainted. So guess what I've been doing all weekend? That's right: painting. Yesterday I got the ceiling finished and today is for walls. Naturally, I want to get it finished asap, which meant a coat of paint first thing today, then a run, and now I'm trying to sum up the energy for the next coat of paint...

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I needed something today so have just been to the shops. I managed to get a set of skullcandy method sports for almost half price! They are the type with a collar. And have a w year warranty! I'll see how they go and may research a bit more
Amazon is tricky for us because only a few things ship internationally at a decent price.

Week 1 of 12 officially completed. There I was this morning pottering along on my nice short (compared to last week) Sunday morning long run thinking about the fact that my pace has got a lot faster all of a sudden and pondering on the possible reasons. Finally getting used to the new shoes and found a good combination of socks and compression sleeves to go with them, felt slightly cooler this morning, knowing the run was going to be 3.5km shorter than last Sunday's one, the fact that I've settled into a run 9 minute walk 1 minute routine now for anything longer than 5km. Probably a combination of all the above and a few more factors I haven't thought of yet. Oh, could also be the two jelly babies I ate as fuel along the way.
Anyway, getting back on to topic, there I was considering all of this and feeling quite pleased with myself because I'm getting faster when an orange thing appears in my peripheral vision, shoots past me on the left and races off ahead. Was it just one of those million other runners that pass me every day? No, it was a guy doing that silly-looking (sorry but it does make me laugh) wiggly speed walk. Way to make a girl feel slow LOL. To make it even worse, he reached the end of the path, turned round and passed me coming back and after seeing him from the front I'd say he was at least 20 years older than me. Oh well!
Well on track for goal this month, and I have a 5.1km race on Friday evening. Organised by the Spanish National Police force to raise funds 'against human trafficking' and the location is on the route of my December half marathon so will be treating it simply as a mini-dress rehearsal/training run.

Considering she lives in Hawaii, a better number is she only needs 600 more miles to run from Hawaii to the coast of California. Easily doable for her I think.6 -
Thanks @MobyCarp I'll pass on the information. He did mention that his HR zones had changed, but i dismissed that as an automatic and accurate adjustment on garmins part.
I did try to stress that he'll get more out the slower, easier runs. I'd like him to run trails with me to slow him down a bit. Maybe i can get him to start his run with me then continue the miles he needs. Hes all about paved roads though.
Its his first go, and he hasnt had this group to learn from. I think he may be inclined to pop in once in a while now. He's a strong enough runner that he can pile on the miles, even sporadically without injury holding him back. I think thats what teaches most of us to reign it in. Not slow gimpy almost running wives that try to convey "right" and "wrong".

Haha, if this guy was doing the full-on hip wiggle race walk (which I think one is totally allowed to say looks goofy) I bet he was booking! The Wikipedia article says that “to achieve competitive speeds racewalkers must attain cadence rates comparable to those achieved by world-class 800 metres runners.” Wow!AlphaHowls wrote: »9/1 26.52 miles

Hugs! I wonder if he might benefit from a session or three running coach who isn’t his spouse? I suspect that even if you were the fastest woman alive he’d push back - it can be hard to listen to people who care about us when they try and tell us something we don’t want to hear. It sucks but if he’s never learned to hold back, it’s possible he won’t until he actually does injure himself or end up with a DNF after bonking.6 -
Hi guys! Just joined this group and am planning to run 10 miles today on my first formal week of marathon trainings. Cheers to surviving.14

@MegaMooseEsq The running coach isnt a bad idea. To my knowledge there is no coaching available in our area. I'll see if i can find anything. Thanks.0

There are online ones. It is not as good as in person of course, but many people use them successfully. Might look one of them up.3 -

The running Gods looked favorably on me this morning. 66F degrees, light mist for the first 9 miles. Took it about 0:30/mi slower than MP for the first 9, then MP or better for the last 3. Felt good at the end, but didn't want to push it. Leg felt good for the last 3. Did some good foam rolling and stretching right after, and feeling better than it has in a long time.
Welcome @brianaalyse92!9 -
Thanks @Scott6255 ran 10 miles this morning and training for Boston! Is there a running group to join after December in the fitness pal community?5

144 of of 160 km done. I'm a little annoyed with my self, I've done nothing to work on my lack of speed. I just start running, zone out, and all of a sudden I'm back home, having no idea of how far or how fast I've run until I check my phone.

YES! So each month a new thread is created and most of us move to the new thread. Each month a few fall away, and a few join. I think I have been in the last 13 or 15 months now... but some have been in way more than that, and some will make next month their first one. It is all good
It is really just one big long party at its heart...6 -
7 km - Friendship Trail and Pipeline Right of Way Exploration.
While doing a slow run on tired legs stumbled across the Right of Way for the Water pipeline had been recently cleared and all the trees were chipped creating a deep mulch bed - like running on 6-8 inchs of soft loose material. A real workout for the tired legs - especially since it went straight uphill - no sissy switchbacks 45 meters of Elevation gain in less than a km. Must reverse the route this week so I can run down it. Will be in the area with a camera later so will grab a couple of pictures.brianaalyse92 wrote: »Thanks @Scott6255 ran 10 miles this morning and training for Boston! @brianaalyse92 As Scott as already mentioned Yes there will be a new link posted at the end of each month - always a race /challenge to be the first to post in the new month. Were a chatty group so hang on tight - 69 pgs in 23 days and then there are the sub forums:
