    I can do about half a donut, but it turns out I don't like donuts enough to waste my carbs on them. French fries, on the other hand...

    It does get easier. (Assuming you are newly diagnosed type 2.) You learn more about how to satisfy your cravings within your safe limits, and as you lose weight and become more active your insulin resistance improves. If I run 10k first I can eat half a large fry plus dessert.
