I was all motivated and ready to go, but last evening I had a pretty rough therapy session, touched on a lot of painful memories, and instead of doing what I should have done, which was go home, hug and my cat and dog and wait for my boyfriend to get home from work to comfort me, I poured myself two mixed drinks with gin. Didn't really help of course. I am worried for this weekend coming up, because my habit is to isolate on Saturday nights and binge on ciders and unhealthy take out.
Sometimes our emotions are so strong and painful to bear that I dont blame you for drinking that gin. We can all relate. Xo
Maybe on Saturday night you can break the pattern/habit of staying home and go to a movie. I remember last January feeling so lost because I was doing dry January and so used to stopping at a bar on Friday night, I sat for hours at a Starbucks. Now that was a lonely evening but I made it through without drinking. LOL5 -
Day 8 today and feeling strong. I feel like I'll be in the clear after day 109

@RubyRed427...Funny you should mention Madness! It is my favorite song they do, and they played it at the concert, so it was great then too! He actually wrote it about his relationship with his then wife Kate Hudson. That song strikes a chord with me (no pun intended) in many ways. Anyhow, music is sometimes great therapy. I often am listening to music while I run. I just kind of wonder between my conscious and subconscious, if that makes any sense at all!1

@NormInv...Congrats on day 8! Day 10 is right around the corner! Stay strong!5

Sorry people's, I have been trying to tell u ppls a few times on here that I made it last night with some hassles at the start, but for some reason it's not posted.
..with envious sister in laws a particular one being rowdy and forceful I managed to slip out of their grip during the course of the first drinks going around.
I didn't have to worry much after that. They were enjoying their own company. I kept myself occupied with food prep and cleaning up.
The travel home was a difficult one bc dense fog had set in so I was glad I had a clear head.
Well done @Norminv ,... your helping me keep strong. Always nice to know your not the only one going through a tough time.
I have lost track when my last drink was ,its on here somewhere. I feel I need to go one day at a time during these tough periods. And the more I think about days and drinking the more I feel vulnerable.
I think keeping myself busy is helping .7 -

Well done, Friends. To those of you staying strong, congrats. To those that may be silently following and have NOT stayed sober, that's OK, we still welcome your insight. We've all had to start over at one time or another. I've got yet another holiday ornament exchange party tonight which I am sure will be full of wine and God knows what else. I will not be tempted as I am getting blood drawn Monday morning and I know that having any booze in my system will just make me feel lethargic and dehydrated and can't risk that. Plus I am driving, in the dark, to an unfamiliar place, and I need my wits about me. Wishing you all a happy Sunday.

Went out last night with family, all were drinking wine and cocktails. I asked for club soda with cherries and the waitress put those beautiful dark cherries in the soda on a decorative stick. I really liked that. Afterwards, my cousin was lamenting that all she does is come home from work, sit on the couch and drink wine each day. I saw myself in her. I’m happy I broke that habit in 2018. The extra time found not drinking has been an eye opener. Besides better health and losing weight, I rediscovered activities like art and painting that I had pushed aside over the years.
I was AF for 7 months total this past year. And this December is polar opposite from last December binges and parties. Last December 1, I had the worst hangover of my life, forgot my credit card at a bar, and stayed in bed for two days. I never ever want to live like that again.9 -
@RubyRed427 I've not only left my cc in a bar, but forgotten if I had even paid and went back to retrieve it and sheepishly inquire if I paid and tipped the bartender. It are these small humiliations over the years that have made me say, "is this actually worth it?"
I've been debating whether to bring wine to this party tonight. I've decided I'll bring an appetizer and a couple bottles of Pelligrino. If I am considered cheap, so be it. I need to be true to myself.5 -

I have brought Pelligrino to parties lately. I get the glass bottles to fancy it up a bit. But I think an app and the sparkling water is a wonderful thing. Xo1 -
In a couple of weeks I will be 18 months AF. In Feb, I will be 2 years opiate free. In Jan, I have shoulder surgery. I will recover using Advil and a stick to bite. It scares me that the reason I have to do this is that I don't want to remember how good it felt. I was having trouble thinking through the decision logically. I had a psychiatrist appointment for a med check the other day and brought it up as one of her specialties is substance abuse. That conversation lasted less than 30 seconds. So, yeah, no pain meds.8

I am pushing day 6 with no alcohol and I’m feeling damned good about it. I just need to make it through the holidays and I’ll be home free!11

For those struggling with sleep, try ZMA supplement, it works great....it does give you very vivid and weird dreams tho3

So I am glad I brought the Perrier to the party tonight as there were NO non alcohol options! Nothing! Not even a jug of water out. Well we all reminisced and caught up (college friends) and when it came time to open the ornaments, the one I chose turned out to be a miniature wine glass. Oh well. I said, "Oh thank you, it's so cute!" but this will never be going on my tree.

Good on you, Jen, for thinking of taking something incase. U would have been REALLY in a spot of bother. U did awesome, and well done putting on a brave face opening your ornament ..x1 -
It's great having a read through this thread. I often think about giving up alcohol, I don't drink it too often but generally do it as the "norm" when we eat out or if we are at friends or something.
At the start of this year I was diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome and have realised that I no longer know how alcohol will affect me. I have had 4-5 drinks in one night and felt fine the next day, however I have also had 2 drinks and felt like I had the worst hangover the next day. I'm seriously thinking it's just not worth it. I've always said to my husband that if I only have 250 calories left for the day I would much rather have a bar of chocolate over a glass of wine. We'd probably save a lot of money too as when we go see family in Manchester if we have a drink we have to stay over in a hotel or if we go out for a meal and have a drink we have to get taxi's. If I drove on those occasions we would easily save a few hundred pounds a year. I'm thinking of just biting the bullet and going totally alcohol free.5 -
Well, next lot of bithdays thats coming up is this Saturday and then 3 consecutive days from 25 -27 , then the 6th, 22 and 26 of Jan. One of them being mine. And of course the new year , and christmas day being a 'double banger' amongst it, I think I'll be ok. I have had this experience of the last one to hopfully be able to reflect and prepare myself. I want to be able to say I've done it for the first time. It would be probably since I was young if I do, do it. .. so ive set this MASSIVE chellenge for myself. *flex*
( I just have to picture myself 'blowing up like a balloon', while sitting on the couch / seat drinking .. that's REALLY really a scary thing for me. I don't like that part AT ALL!! That'll be enough )2 -

Hey, that sound a great decision. Even if u just give it a go. We always have fails but we just start over.
I'm sorry to hear ur not well but even if u lessen it to start off then bit by bit , day by day take it as far as u like. It is by far better without. But there isn't any hard and fast rules.
Some can take it but not all.
Welcome to our chats, I'll be interested in knowing how you go..2 -
Hoping everyone has a great week3

I love Muse, going to see them in Toronto in March. I saw them at a music festival a few years ago-awesome. My favorite song they do is Hysteria-I just close my eyes and listen to those guitar solos....3 -
@NormInv Is it Day 10 yet? Xo3

Why don’t you try a 30 day challenge? Log how you feel each day and at the end of the Challenge, you can decide to continue being AF or not. There are apps that also keep track of how much money you save by not drinking. Best wishes. Sorry you have the syndrome.5 -

That is ironic to get that ornament!!! Good work bringing the Perrier. Better than drinking plain water , for sure.
Tonight, I was out with some teachers. A fellow teacher said her son is turning 21 soon and she’s going to make him a “shot ski” to celebrate. I love this lady but I felt kind of sad that she would want to encourage drinking like that.3 -
