Today's run was in 2 parts. This morning I met a friend for a 30 minute run and then coffee (the coffee was the main event). Late afternoon I did a warm-up on the treadmill before circuit training. 2.8 miles in the am and 2.5 in the pm.dreamer12151 wrote: »So, I ran yesterday morning, and ever since then, my left ankle has been rather sore & painful. Its more on the inside, where the ankle meets the foot, but radiates up the ankle a bit & when I walk, the foot feels tight, for lack of a better phrase.
I have a wrap on it, doing some gentle stretching, plan on icing it later (when I have a chance to actually sit down!). Have a 6 mile run planned tomorrow....but when I look at my anatomy materials, I'm wondering if I might have a bit of tendonitis? I'm hoping just a strain though.
What do I need to look for or should I just make a call to my podiatrist?
@dreamer12151 I have tendonitis currently on the outside part of the foot/ankle (peroneal tendonitis) but have also had it on the inside ankle previously (I think posterior tibial tendonitis). I am not qualified to give medical advice but mine is achey after running and especially when I wake up in the morning but usually okay during running. I have been given stretching exercises, recommended to strengthen other big muscles in legs and hips, and need to find good shoes (I'm about to go to a shoe fitter recommended by my podiatrist because I'm struggling with this). Podiatrist recommended the stretching exercises several times a day and said I could apply heat first, do stretches, and then ice. Again, not a medical professional, just reporting what I've experienced. I was told it was okay to run throughout as long as it did not get more painful during running (which it doesn't for me).3 -
@7lenny7 , @MNLittleFinn , @JessicaMcB A new race - a differant concept .
Sounds like one you would like. A bit of travel involved to get to the start line for lenny & LittleFinn1 -

I somehow managed to gain 9 lbs over the course of a week and that cake of yours gave me a realization. I had stopped logging, but kept eating my usual foods at home (though portion sizes surely were increased) and kept up my usual exercise routine (25-30 miles/day biking, PPL weight lifting 6 days/wk, mixed with a smidgeon of running). BUT then I thought about the new vegan restaurant we tried twice. There must've been some serious calorie bombs in that food. No online nutritional information available and now I probably know why.
I had the same problem. A vegan place around me, that I loved eating at (although I am not vegan or vegetarian, i just was looking for healthier optioned foods and trying somethig new) has recorded their food as being 800+ calories. Most vegan establishments will not post calories because they want people to focus on living healthier lifestyles and eating healthy foods (which i later realized it was about hiding the hidden calories, overkilling curtain high caloric items to have the meals taste better) and have it not be about calorie counting, but when you load a salad up with beans and oil...for the sake of calorie counting.. it can be a bomb to the system like any other establishment. Even just adding one too many avocados can be an overkill. Sodium tends to be another overkill in vegetarian items, especially if it contains soy bean.
One good thing to come out of this experience is I got to try some new dishes and have tailored them for home (minus the tons of calories!).
One recipe was a Bolognese sauce but you use chickpeas, lentils and black beans rather then meat but the quantity of beans was ridiculious...great for splitting up into small chili bowls, but crazy on carbs and sodium..so I did the same thing you did. It gave me amazing ideas for what to make at home and I can modify it just a tad lol1 -
@katharmonic, I see you mentioned a spreadsheet for tracking your statistics. What do you track. I have a spreadsheet as well and I track time, distance, and average pace. I am just curious if there is something else I should consider tracking.
@msarobix I track steps, run minutes and miles, and other exercise minutes (and miles if walking/hiking) mainly. I have a running total by day/week/month/year. I rank and graph miles run per month. For the current month I have a tab with my cumulative miles for my posts here and I project how many miles I think I'll get each day and use that to set my goal for the month and then compare what I actually do to that. I also have a tab on the spreadsheet for races with all the stats for each (time, splits, place etc.).
I don't track pace for each run but I've been thinking about it. All that info is available in Garmin and Strava of course so I'm not sure I need to re-enter it for my own spreadsheet. The point of the whole spreadsheet for me was to track activity and motivate myself, but I do have a goal of improving my pace so I'm thinking about how best to look at that.

I can already see it is going to be VERY difficult to keep up with everyone here, not only in running mileage, but also messages. WOW! I know the first messages said there would be a lot, but OMG! It wasn’t so bad when I was on vacation over the holidays, and was able to check the board several times a day. But now that I am back to work, more than likely I will only be able to check it in the evening, and I will be lucky if I can get through all the messages.
Anyway, I started my January Running challenge yesterday. Next run is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
It sure can be! I tend to rely on the restroom visit to scroll throughout looking to see if I’d been tagged. Then when/if I have time I try to go back for conversations. Least in the restroom, you can’t get caught on the phone thus forgoing any scrutinizing scowls. Haha!5 -
on treadmill today 1.1 miles, starting slow compare to you racers on here.10

1/1/19: 4.55 Miles: 4.55 Miles
I think I committed to running 30 miles this month, or maybe it was 40. I will have to go find my original post, but no matter I will probably try to surpass whatever I committed too because I know it was conservative to begin with.

@medmuso, congratulations on your recent engagement.
We ALL miss posts. I rely on other peoples responses to know what I missed. For example, I now know I need to go back and find out what happened with @medmuso!
No worries! Just carry on best you can, the thread slows down a bit as the month rolls on usually.5 -
It was rainy and cold all day, so went to the gym. Luckily I got there early enough to miss most of the resolution rush. By the time I left, people we're waiting for treadmills and the parking lot was slammed! Did a speed session and I was really surprised at how much faster I had to set the speed now!! I've been running outside for several months and I knew I was getting faster, but I was really shocked! Made me feel really good to see so much progress!!

I luv the fact this marathon is advertising for only 2 volunteers!
And bring stuff to share at the aid table
And use your own gps to prove you did the distance
Kinda awesome and efficient! Lol9 -

One neat thing about this is you never know where you are in the pack. I mean for the first 2 hours, you would have the lead runners in sight the whole time but not have any clue who is ahead of you or behind you.3 -

So, I have that long flight Friday and I have no idea how to spend my time.
Dh suggested a book. I don’t read.
Then suggested an audio book. Of what? And sit for hours listening to the same voice drone on? Ugh.
I can’t listen to music, because there’s no service. I can’t surf the mfp group. Or watch a movie.
I have an anatomy coloring book which will keep me interested all of 5 minutes until I get disoriented, yes I packed Dramamine. What if I drop a pencil like a little kid? Jeez.
I have my running plans made out through the end of April. What the heck am I gonna do?

@juliet3455 that looks very cool! I've never seen a format like that before. I had to look hard to figure out where this was. I finally figured it out. We have an office in Calgary, which is only 2.5 hours away. I've never had reason to go there, though, so trying to time a trip to coincide with work would be near impossible. It would be fun though.

@Elise4270 Many apps now let you download content to your phone so you can watch/listen to them without service. Netflix and Youtube both do. I'm sure there are many others. Bring a backup battery, if you can get one on the plane, to keep your ipad charged.

I don’t know. Getting “lost” might be a huge problem for some participants (depending on their race hydration and fueling strategy). The Facebook page says there is an aid station every loop - 384.55 potential stops. The aid station will be serving beer, margaritas, Fireball and Bloody Marys ........

Usually $5 buys you internet on long planes. Depending on length of flight, might be worth the money. Bring earphones, the plug in kind, not Bluetooth- I recently learned Bluetooth doesn’t work in airplane mode. Then you can do anything on your iPad. Depending on the airline, they offer tv for free. Another reason to have plug in headphones. I usually download podcasts and have a book. And switch back and forth.
ETA...
While I’m posting. I am still here, still have no good goal... currently moving... again... which makes running in the near future unlikely. And my sidewalk adverse town, also has gotten like 30 inches of snow in the last 3 weeks, 12 ish in the last week, plus wind...and only had 2 days above freezing.... which not only complicates running, but making moving a terrible activity. But, I plan to run... eventually.10 -

@7lenny7 If you (or any of the folks @juliet3455 tagged) came out to do that race I'd sign up for a leg! A very, very slooooow leg... (or maybe I'd volunteer instead).3 -

Oh dang. I was keen on my Bluetooth noise canceling head phones. I have home work to do! I think they have a plug in... maybe. Yes. Whew! The ones that go in your ear make my ears sore. 5 bucks ain’t bad.
What’s a podcast? Is it like YouTube, but no video? Where are podcasts? Can I get them on anything? I don’t like fiction stuff.
Maybe. Idk. I think I’m horribly picky. I have half a plan now. Thanks!2 -

Can't help With the flight, but I WANT an anatomy colouring book! Pics please!3 -
Trying to catch up but am wayyyy to far behind.
I feel like I've started this year well, 3 runs in 3 days. Not anything of any great length but am building up. Today I had thought I'd only do 3k,and I did 5.that feels great.
I got a new running tank yesterday. I got the large on advice but thought the medium fit better. It was more "snug", especially arround the middle. I prefer snug, anything flapping annoys me. Also the large was looser around the arm holes.
Big mistake. Should have gone with the medium. I have chaffey under my arm. From rubbing. Annoying because it's a great tank other than that! I see why people buy branded. It's so light weight, and minimal coverage in the back so I wasn't so hot. My usual tank has a lot more coverage. So lesson learned, go with your gut and ignore people who comment about things being too snug.
I did get one bargain in the sales. My sports bras are usuly around $60 (can't be bothered converting, just halve them it's approximate, also I'm a 10E so a really awkward size - I think that's 32...).Yesterday there was an outlet shop that had them for $15 each. Bargain. Then I found out they were 40% off again. So basically $9 each. I got 3.
Rest day tomorrow, mostly to let the chaffe heal. I may take the kids for a mile walk. Will see. Tempted to try a streak for January...8 -
January Goal: Do more than last month
1/1 1.25
1/2 2.20
Total: 3.45
@Elise4270 If you're flying Hawaiian, there are movies and music available on headphone (you can use your own set). There is also a USB plug at each seat to stay charged. I always have my tablet preloaded with lots of my stupid games....and you can usually download Kindle books (lots of nonfiction titles available).
Upcoming races:
January 4, 2019 Hilo to Volcano Ultra 50k Relay. In memory of @keeprunningfatboy
Ticker is my goal for 2018 and (obviously deficient) progress to date:

I usually download a bunch of stuff to my phone or tablet for long flights, music, TV shows, movies and whatnot. Spotify and Youtube both do offline, as does Netflix.
Alternatively, perhaps you could take a notebook and try to write something?
Most of the time I do a lot of preparation and end up sleeping half the way lol.4 -
01 - 4
02 - 1.25
January Total: 5.25 miles
January Goal: 60 miles
Upcoming Races:
Rhody Run 12k (5/19)
Tomorrow I am doing an evening run, not looking forward to running in the dark, but glad I'll have a friend keeping me company. Happy running!5 -
@Elise4270 - You can also download movies or episodes of shows from Netflix. I typically do enough for both flights and then see if the flight has any offerings that I want to watch. I also bring magazines I have been wanting to catch up on (Runner's World, Women's Running, etc...). When I had Internet access I would also watch YouTube videos mostly about running (binge watching Kelly Roberts BQ or Bust series!).
@medmuso - Congratulations! That is very exciting!!
@msarobix - Lots of us keep spreadsheets. There was a discussion last month about what we track and @7lenny7 had a good one that he shared. You can search on spreadsheet in the December thread to take a look. I track miles, duration, pace, Min, Max, Avg HR, shoes (for miles per shoes), steps, etc... Even though some of that info is in Strava I want to be able to do my own trend comparisons YoY
@somethingsoright - there are several shoe brands now that have wider toe boxes and are 0 drop but have 'some' cushioning so not totally minimal. Altra is probably the best known (REI mentioned previously carries a few of their styles), Topo Athletic is another as is Carson Footwear (primarily trail running). Definitely a visit to a good running store that has many brands to try and compare would be a good idea.
I would also take that sports podiatrist up on that analysis offer and then look for shoes based on the recommendations from it.
Welcome back @skippygirlsmom - missed you! Hope all is going well!
@ddmom0811 - Congratulations on finishing your streak! Awesome job!
Still no run for me yet in 2019. Hopefully on Friday. I am still babying my foot and Hobbes the Vizsla has been traumatized and isn't much interested in going out with me6 -
newbie here

New Member to this, hi everyone!!
My running (& walking) goals for the month of January, 10 (& 20) miles!
[January 1] Ran 1.00 mile in 14:14 and Walked 0.86 mile in 17:55. (1/10 and 0.86/20)
[January 2] Walked 2.29 mile in 1:10:28. (1/10 and 3.15/20)9 -
@medmuso Congratulations! My training last week was equally set back a few days for that same reason, but if there were ever a good excuse to miss a run I reckon that’s it!
@Elise4270 I have never flown for longer than 3hrs, so I can’t help, but I am very jealous of your anatomy colouring book. More details, please3
