I feel whole again.
Tonight I ran. I RAN!
And it was good.
I got the bug to run while at work today. Up until today I was so adamant that I wasn't going to run until my 12 weeks were over, but then I thought, really, what difference is 2.5 days going to make? I decided to go for it.
It took a while to dig through my cold weather gear and figure out what to wear for 28F, and of course I overdressed. I planned on two loops around the 'hood with Kody, for about 3 miles total. I was going to walk the first quarter mile but I don't think I walked more than a 100 yards before I started running. It was harder than I expected it to be. I had it in my mind that all this cardio I'd been doing at the gym would make this easy but I had to work for it. That first loop was quite a chore. I stopped off at my house to shed a layer and continued for another loop. The second loop went much better and the last mile felt awesome!, though still a bit tiring.
With Kody I had built in breaks since I had to stop to pick up his poop four times in the first loop, and I had a couple of my own walking breaks. I ran nearly the entire second loop. My average HR was a bit higher than I wanted at 144, but my running pace was great at 10:19. I had a little pain at the site of the tendon rupture (not the repair site, which was fine) and on the inside of my heel bone. I'm not worried about my heel at all, but I'll keep an eye on that rupture site. I have this paranoid feeling that the other three extensor digitorum longus tendons are going to blow up on me too.
I want so badly to run again tomorrow, but I know that's stupid, so I won't.
Ah, it feel SO GOOD to run again! My first in 86 days!

Woohoo @7lenny7. Congrats on getting back out there!3

3 miles hardly seems worth the trouble. Just started feeling relaxed when I had to stop. But taper I must.
A semi-related running question: back in November I reserved a hotel room through the Houston marathon site, and requested late check-out, as I know I will getting back after normal checkout time (usually like 10am). Got a confirmation, but didn't see anything about late check-out. Kept trying to contact them to verify, but never got a response. Finally got through today and they said it had to be requested at check-in, and depends on availability. Uh, Ok.
What am I supposed to do with all my luggage and crap if I have to check out at 5:30am on my way to the marathon? I won't have a car (specifically got the hotel because it is less than a mile from the start line). Anyone had to deal with that before?4 -
@7lenny7 So so happy for you!
@PastorVincent Thanks for the tips - I know I'm a giant whiny baby but I just do not like cold, and we get real cold so rarely here that I'm not experienced in dressing for running in it, warming up, etc. Also it makes my husband's asthma ten times worse, which is annoying.3 -
Today it had been 41 degrees C (105 ish F) and getting hotter and my energy is gone so this mornings planned dreadmill 4K ended up being a walk. I can live with that.
Seriously our state is being boiled. Some towns had 49C/120F it’s crazy 🥵
31/50 km done. Beer o’clock ✅

@7lenny7 Congrats on the run!1

YAY @7lenny7! Great that you are running again!@Scott6255 - as others have said the hotel should have accommodations to hold your luggage beyond the race time. I would be really surprised though as a race hotel, if they did not have a late check out for the race participants. You might try calling the hotel (not the reservation line) and ask about what is available for race participants. At the SF Marathon the race hotels had late checkout, special pre-race breakfast 'on the go' options and a post race room set up with foam rollers, yoga mats, etc...
Thanks @shanaber. Yes, I called the hotel directly, and that is who told me that. Plus, I figured they would have shuttles running to the start for marathoners. I asked that question, and she said yes, they do have shuttles, and they start at 7am. Huh???? The race starts at 7am!! So stupid. I had planned on doing a slow jog from the hotel anyway as a warm up, but with the temp and winds forecasted, I was hoping to get some relief. Oh well, can't change the weather. Just have to dress for it and suck it up.6 -
@rheddmobile I feel you. It's not just the temperature on race day, but the big changes from day to day. Having those here too. Supposed to be 7 degrees Monday morning. It's 32 this morning. Good luck. Hopefully you'll be able to find the right clothing to be comfortable and have a great race!1

At 20 degrees I could not run without supplemental heat. Seriously, I would have to take a DNS. I would not even consider attempting it. The thing is to learn how to equip for it for it. A face mask will help keep your breath warmer, and that often helps with asthma, at least it does for my wife. For a 20 degree race, she would also hit up her inhaler before the race starts. I think 30 mins before.
Do not let me push you out where you are not ready though. If you think you can not adequately prepare for the temperature, stay home. There will be other races.7 -
Definitely a happy dance for @7lenny7 !
I'm up. Its 0220 Hawaii time. I'm so outta whack. Good thing is that I'll be so tired after work I'll probably go to bed asap. Bad thing is that its messed with my appetite and i have none, but i do do have to get up at 1am to poo. Didnt get to "sleep" until after 3. The sleep that you're sure you never slept kinda sleep and demon dreams. Dh takes sleep meds, i think hes unaffected. I'm struggling.
Someone sleep for me.
Need a run today... If i can stay awake.11 -
I feel whole again.
Tonight I ran. I RAN!
And it was good.
Congrats and all that... BUT TAKE IT, SLOW MAN. Seriously. Easy does it. I know how you runner types think and you will be looking to do a 5000000000 mile run by the weekend. Easy does it. Take a couple months to get back into it so that you do not have this injury for life.

Every time I look at the forecast for my upcoming trail race on Sunday the 20th, it's another degree colder. It started out with a race time (2 pm) forecast of 51 F, now it's down to 25 with a feels like of 13! With warm temperatures on either side! It's like the universe is picking on me personally! Cue the tiny violins!
Seriously I don't know if it was ever this cold here last year, it may be the coldest weather I've ever run in.
Sometimes, the universe is like that. April 15, 2018 there was good running weather in Boston. April 17, 2018 there was near-perfect running weather in Boston. April 16, 2018 there was a nor'easter, and the Boston Marathon. These things happen.3 -

@7lenny7 Woohoo, welcome back to running!
@Kimtrooper 41°C? I'd be dead! We had a couple (too many) 35°C days last summer, I'm already not sure how I survived that. I think for a month the temperature in my apartment never dropped below 28°C *shudder* I'm glad winter is here
@taxgirl1 Well done for starting C25K again! If the local running store didn't start a new-years-resolutions program by now, they might not do it at all - I think middle of January the first people already start second-guessing their good intentions.
--
My run on Saturday was short and miserable, my run on Sunday was longer and better. 19.3km, maybe 60% of that in sticky mud and rain
Unfortunately, I might have hurt my knee a bit at the very end, back on pavement on the way home. I was jumping up to slap a street sign (please tell me I'm not the only one here who does that kind of thing? ^^), and I must have landed a bit funny, because there was a sharp pain in my left knee the moment I touched down. I could still finish the run though. Yesterday morning it hurt a but to walk, but fortunately yesterday evening it was fine as long as I stayed away from stairs, so I don't think it's anything serious. I'm still thinking I might make today an extra rest day, just be to on the safe side.
