WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR APRIL 2019

Hi all! Slept better, but still have horrible sinus ache and feel decidedly under par.
Fed up with this. The sun is shining, it is 78+° and I don't want to do anything.
This morning I had fancied a Parkrun, (how did you get on, Kate?) but knew my time would be awful, so I didn't go. Instead I went out before the heat built up and tottered round a 6.5k curcuit at a very slow speed. I met the last finishers at the Parkrun, who would be with me if I were doing it. It was nice to be out, but I missed my normal exercises, so I'm behind on burn. I will go and do some rowing if I can find a decent programme to watch on stream.
DH watching his sports in his study. I think he is as fed up with me being miserable as I am.
Tonight is baked skate with black butter and capers, with roasted cauliflower.
I love your dignity, Margaret.
Allie - You are definitely doing the right thing. Death comes to all of us and you have done your very best to give him a quality of life. You have been his angel.
Janetr - what fun to be going out on the town! DH and I absolutely loved NYC when we were there. Your daughter and granddaughter look so excited! A great idea to give themselves a treat.
Going to be even hotter tomorrow. I'll wear a light, long sleeved shirt and summer floaty pants. Big hat. Must remember to take water and a protein bar in case we are late back. We are being picked up at 9.50 to get on the steam train at 10.45. It stops at several stations for the kids to have an Easter Egg hunt. As we normally eat lunch early I think I might be getting hungry!
I hate bank holidays. Especially hot ones. I feel like a fish out of water.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx

HEATHER I knocked another 2 mins off my time. Still takes me 42 mins, can't run all the way have to stop and walk part of it. It was hot but I enjoyed it. Probably undo the good work tomorrow drinkwith DH and then usually get the munchies afterwards.

Ginger, (((hugs))) your father's downward turn is a fact that is VERY hard to face. Please don't neglect your self care during this stressful time.
Kate, beautiful sock! Looking forward to a pic of its mate and pair of siblings-in-progress.
Margaret zumba and singing, what healing activities! Your earnest intent for improvement-not-revenge shines through your letter. Two suggestions: 1-as Machka has advised in the past, read it out loud to yourself and 2-as Katla implied, somehow highlight focus on the main points. Likely the Chief of Police is a man. In my experience, anything over 3 bullet points flies right past them, so put your most important points first, in short, clear phrases. You can put the supporting details after, they might sink in on re-reading ;}
Janetr oh no! Please keep the pics of your beautiful near-falling-apples coming!
Rori your trip sounds just right, and your cat's Platinum level made me laugh!
Allie, sounds like you're hearing your calling. Good hunting! Know you've done so much for your DFIL that its extra hard to realize its time to start letting go. ((hugs))
Leonora, so glad to hear from you. Please take it slow when walking or changing positions. We have an invisible stealth dog who reappears magically just under where my foot is coming down. Those falls are NOT FUN
Ginnytex sounds like your life is pretty full too!
Machka that Tasmania climate twin map made me smile, but I'd probably kill myself trying to go down your front yard stairs.
Lisa thank goodness for gluten free caffeine!
Carol Brava for all your hard work. It's not easy to surprise and please PTs, but you (and Lisa) have done so!
Heather "The sun is shining, it is 78+° and I don't want to do anything." yet you got up early and tottered around a 6.5K circuit. Well done!
Welcome Debbie from TX and Brittany!
Alas, poor Totoro tree! The huge, perfectly pyramidical, Port Orford Cedar we love, is dying from the dread root rot. The estimates for taking it down where startlingly different, $1500 from the arborist, $400 from the local guy who took out our tan oaks. SMH!
Not raining so will try to get out into the yard, but if it's too windy, will work on firehouse minutes.
Lighter, lovelies!

Heather thank you!
Barbara yes thank you for reminder about bullet points. He is currently a man. I also plan to send the same letter to head of mental health unit . He too is a man. I did learn I need to send them by certified mail.
I did talk to a woman who is in the mental health unit and I could tell she did not get it within talking to her briefly. She focused on all the things our son was doing wrong and did not believe he was making strides. She was starting to list all the appointments he missed and when I asked about the she suddenly had to go look them up on her computer. When I told her it is hard to make appointments when you were in the hospital 3 times last year and you are in there 3 to 4 weeks at a time. She was adamant he was an adult and should be more proactive in his care. Father forgive them they know not what they say.
Barbara Sorry for the loss of your tree. They just took down all the Ash trees a couple of blocks over. They did this to our block about 5 years ago. It is hard to see.

Kate - that is an amazing time. Much better than anything I can manage and you are in a higher age band than me. What is your percentage for your age? I am 48.5%. Sounds like you are doing brilliantly!
Ate too much Easter Bunny tonight, the one that was crushed in the post! ! ! Delicious! Still coming in under maintenance calories by a squeak.
My son rang to tell me to bring a picnic for DH and me tomorrow. Exactly what I was thinking, so I'm glad he thought to inform me. Feel slightly miffed that they couldn't make enough for us too, but with three kids I'm sure they have enough to do. I should have offered myself, but I wasn't sure what they were planning. I had half a mind for fish and chips when we got back. Anyway, glad it's sorted out.
Sneezed out loads of horrible gunge this pm after steaming (TMI) and I feel a bit better. Can breathe. Still aching a bit.
We will get up early tomorrow to do as much exercising as possible before leaving. Set the alarm.

So--there was a mulberry bush at my back fence line in front of the lilacs that has bothered me for a couple of years. While I was putting up with bad hips, and then recovering from having them both replaced (one in 2016, the other in 2018), I just kept looking at it. This afternoon I went out with my little saw and now the 8 foot bush is gone. Took a little time, arm muscles a little sore. Don't know what it may have burnt in calories, but in sense of accomplishment it was huge! Son is going to work on removing stump tomorrow. Not bad for a 64 year old lady. Credit the 6 lbs lost recently and increased exercise the last 6 weeks with giving me the energy I needed. There are all sorts of benefits to this program, but my main goal is to be in shape so I can handle things around my house.

Lisa ~ Sounds like you need to stay on the high protein low carb diet.
Margaret ~ Hugs for you and your son. Is your husband helping you go through this?
Went to my after surgery PT yesterday. They were surprised and pleased at my progress...two days after total knee replacement. No walker and did well with the bending measurements. The pain block wore off during the night on Thursday and I had to take a pain pill. Slept a lot yesterday and last night. Extra strength Tylenol is a blessing.

I started a comment document to chat with everyone and life intervened in a very good way. DH & I spent our day getting our drip water system back online and functioning after the winter. We have two new Fuchsias hanging in strategic place & my vegetable section is ready for planting. I'm planning to plant purple pod string beans again this year.

Heard from Navy son in Japan, course he called us at 4am! Work brain work! I think I babbled a bit, but I do remember about 99% of the conversation, so that was good! He had an ingrown toenail partially removed, because it was giving him pain. Poor kid! He sounded good, and stated he is up and around now. We chatted for an hour! God I love that kid!
Hugs to you all!

Rori - that sounds like a wonderful trip. I love genealogy, I can trace three lines of mine back to the late 1600 early 1700’s. My Grandmother did a lot of research.
Allie - they can go back and correct that for your pay can’t they? Sorry to hear about your DFIL.
Lisa - that’s pretty good that he noticed, hope these changes in your diet get you feeling better.
Heather - I hope you are feeling much better tomorrow. I can’t wait to hear about the Easter egg hunt from the train. How awesome!
Rebecca - so happy for you that you got a phone call from your son. Those 4am calls are worth taking.
I didn’t get to catch up earlier today. I spend the day crafting getting ready for Easter. I made hoodies for the Grands and worked on a project for myself. I’ll share pics.
I took a tumble today. I was stepping down off a chair from moving an wall decoration and stepped on the base of my office chair instead of the floor. I went crashing down as it felt like the floor literally moved out from under me. I may have a bruised hip and shoulder tomorrow but thankfully nothing more serious. Apparently my Granddaughter is going to have black eyes for Easter. She was on a trampoline with her little cousin today and the cousin hit her in the nose with the top of her head. Poor girls.
Have a Happy Easter in case I am late tomorrow too.

I agree.
Personally, I would set it up as follows:
Short intro explaining who you are in relation to the person in question. Brief intro to your son.
Then something like, "I would like to present the following 3 points".
1. How things should have gone, ideally.
2. What actually happened from your perspective.
3. Differences between the ideal and what actually happened.
Then start with point 1 and, in point form, say how things should have gone.
Then point 2 ... also in point form.
Then point 3 ... also in point form, and this is where you can mention things like the inappropriate time of day (son was sleeping), inappropriate involvement of the police (should have just stood by and let others handle it until things got out of hand), and use of taser and it's affect on a person like your son. If you've got a well-written, fairly scholarly article you've found online about that, you can include a link.
And finally a conclusion that mentions the new directive of the department to approach things less aggressively and your hope that they can use this as an example of where things could have gone better.
That's just a rough sketch of a possible way to approach it.
You don't have to make paragraphs, point form is fine - it is easier to read and easier for you to lay the details out.
You can use your first draft of the letter, and all the "and furthermores" you've written since.
I offer this as a suggestion after having written numerous emails in all sorts of different formats and having discovered that this sort of format is the one that tends to get read and responded to most frequently.

Last night was horrible.
Couldn't breathe. Couldn't stop sneezing. Nose wouldn't stop running. Couldn't sleep. Couldn't lie down. Not happy.
I tried to go to bed about 10:30 but it was 1:30 before I finally dozed off for an hour. Then I was up again till 4:30, and finally, at last, managed 4 hours of sleep, then another 2, then another 4.
I'm up. Sort of. Mainly because I felt a bit hungry. Mild fever, headache, but Niagara Falls has eased to a steady stream.
I'm going to attempt some homework ..... or maybe go lie down again.

Machka - feel better here on the east coast of the US its 2.22 am been awake for an hour or so...I dont like it one bit.. so much stuff running through my head..its not funny
... ugh3 -
Margaret: Machka provided a good outline and you’ve got the details. My comments are as follows:
Intro: short and to the point. “I am X. My son Y was arrested on date, case or arrest file #.
Before presenting your case, tell them why you are writing. “I am unsatisfied because .... and want ....” Make this strong, it is your thesis/issue. Keep this in your mind, front and center, as you write each para. (I post it on my wall to keep me focussed while writing).
Present your case as Machka outlined. Bullets, or succinct paragraphs. Refrain from unnecessary details, each point should be evidence for your thesis.
Conclusion: what you want them to do and how you want them to respond to your complaint.
cc’s: Mental Health Unit, Mayor? Governor? (The chief’s boss.), Police Ombudsman (if you have), any other person or org you think would be interested and could assist in this matter.
When you’re close to finishing your draft, have someone read it that doesn’t know your case. That is your test to make sure your letter is clear.
Finally, I would avoid sending by email. Too easy for them to say they didn’t get it. Courier or registered. You’ll have proof they received.
Good Luck! If we all speak up when injustices occur we can make things better. That’s what being an advocate for your son is all about, you are the voice for someone who can’t speak for himself.3 -

HEATHER My age grade is 54.82, not too sure what that means.
DH has just presented me with an Easter card and a chocolate egg, he says its a healthy one because its got nuts in bless him its got 549 cals per 100g and weighs 385g do the math. I love him to bits but sometimes ggggr The question is how long can I resist temptation to open it, I have no will power when it comes to chocolate.
Another gorgeous day here will wear summery clothes to go out

Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate!
Margaret - lots of good suggestions here. The only thing I'd add (and perhaps someone has already mentioned) is to close with something like, "I look forward to working with you on how to best handle future situations like this to assure both patient and officer safety. I can be reached at 555-XXX-XXXX."
Lenora - wow, girlfriend. Take care!!!
Kay - before I forget, great rug, really pulls the room together!
Allie - sorry to hear about your time off hours. Did anyone at the meeting say that this was less than he first proposed? If not, might be worth mentioning to him. I'm the type that would put him on the spot and ask (nicely) why the change? Glad to hear your DFIL is in hospice. Maybe Tom needs to get his rear back home
Barbie - Heather - Kate and all of you other walkers and runners: Keep it up, you are so inspirational!!
Carol - so very proud of you with that new knee!!! Off to a great start!!!
So I went to get fitted for my orthotics on Thursday and looks like running and jumping is out for me, possibly forever. Fact is, when I injured my foot I kept up with the running in place, jumping jacks, walking/running when I should have stopped, iced it, elevated it and babied it like a person would do with a sprained ankle. Sigh.
He recommends "rocker" shoes like Hoka One and some others which have relatively stiff soles that don't bend at the ball of the foot area. He wasn't keen on my "Keen" shoes even though the podiatrist said OK. I'm not going to toss them.
He recommended "Oofas" for slippers to wear around in the house before putting on shoes. Ordered from Zappos and should arrive Wednesday.
Orthotics will be ready in a couple weeks.
Yesterday was work outside day, and it was nice to get many things accomplished.
That's the quick and dirty, lol. Welcome new ladies!

Hi. I'm brand new and this group really appealed to me.
I'm 50 and working to get much healthier this year -- physically and emotionally.
My goals for April (my first month on this program):
- drink 60 oz water daily
- log what I eat
- walk 5 days a week
- take quiet time for myself each day
- sleep 7 hours/night
My brother passed away last month after a short illness. He was the anchor of our family and this has been very hard for us. I'm working like crazy with exciting projects on the horizon. I love what I do and I'm pretty driven to do it 24/7, but I need to find a better work/life balance.
Progress:
Starting weights: 232
Now: 228
Goal: 1505
