Hi Gals,
Lisa – the back patio looks great!!!!
Great memories of the service of our family members….
WWII had both my dad, my uncle (his brother) and his dad serving. All Navy. While none of the men talked about it my Grandma did, she told about the Navy Brass coming to the house, my Grandpa thinking it was the worst as Dad was in Europe, and Uncle was near Japan, but my grandpa had volunteered and the Brass wanted to make sure that it was ok with my Grandma to have all of her family in the Navy at the same time – scared them both to have the brass show up. Grandpa did something with finances and was stationed in Chicago, so not as dangerous as the boys. Cousin Doris also was a WAVE and she could swear like a sailor!
My mom’s side had one uncle; also navy; serving in Korea. Her dad owned a tool and die company and was exempt as everything his company made was for the military effort; I think he had mixed emotions about not being able to serve in the regular way. He did participate in the patrolling of the Connecticut Coast by civilians.
I have 2 cousins that have served, one now retired was an anesthesiologist at Walter Reed. The other has passed away and I don’t remember what he did.

after a few good weeks, this past week I have been off track and yesterday was no better.
650 over.no binging. I had 1750 net, which doesn't work for my slow metabolism and small stature. 1100 net still seems really low to me, but that is really a good net for me to lose weight slowly. I know I'm not alone to be around that. Well 3 more days to see if I finish the month 1k down. I was a solid 1k down but now it's more around a very precarious 0.5.
I finally set up new phone - switching from iPhone to android- it took a while- all good exceptionalities this minor issue- my contacts are imported but somehow access to them is disabled, I think by some manipulation I did that I'm unable to fix. I spent an hour yesterday then fell asleep.
I took an 1st antihistamine of the season (hay fever) they are great for sleeping.0 -
Barbara that sounds like a beautiful walk down to the cistern. I didn't know that quote, but that is surely surely true. Thank you.0

Too lazy to brave the damp, foggy, chilly day and either walk Tumble or play in the dirt. Those to-dos postponed 'til tomorrow morning. Friend and I played voicemail tag then finally connected for a nice long chat. The shock has worn off and she is feeling the heartbreak. Was happy to share some tears and laughter with her. Did draft firehouse budget hearing and board meeting minutes, two more loads of laundry, a little sweeping and a little food prep as bonus/substitute activities.
Had fewer than 1000 steps, so walked while watching Apollo 13 (from library) to get to my daily goal.
It worked, but now I'm too sleepy to do more than skim.
Lanette, many thanks, I'll look at the 1099 tomorrow. (at Tara... ;> )
Katla Papa was a SeaBee too, also stationed in the Solomon Islands, and rarely spoke of his experiences. While there he got malaria. Thanks to the malaria he and Mama resettled in the SF Bay Area as the St.Louis heat and humidity were too hard on him. Lucky for me since that's where my birth mom delivered me.
Lighter, lovelies!

Janetr OKC, don’t blame you not wanting to drive through potential severe storms or a tornado watch zone. I got caught in my car cozied up tight to a friend’s house during a near passage of a small one. I’d prefer not to experience that again. It’s been too long since it was a regular hazard in my life. Your granddaughter looks charming. You and she must be very proud of her honors status.
Rita! Oh, the joy of the first “getting wet” of summer! Whether it was a wading pool, a swimming pool, or playing in the great warm rains of an Ohio summer, it was always grand. I’m so glad you can facilitate that a bit for the folks where you are!
I had my own wonderful “getting wet” days yesterday and today. The pool was a near perfect 82° both days with lots of afternoon sun. Back to cooler weather tomorrow, but not rainy.
Machka, your post reminded my of the American TV comedy, “Get Smart”, which was a spoof of the American CIA. You may have seen it when you were in Canada. They had this thing called “The Cone of Silence”, which was a large plastic-seeming cone that cloaked to talk from outsiders. I can picture you in your “Cocoon of Silence”, lol! Lovely pictures, by the way.
Lisa in AR, enjoy your “family trait”. I picture you, somehow, inna Girl Scout Leaders’ uniform, rump up in the garden. Our trait is to develope osteoarthritis in every conceivable joint, making bending over, straightening up, turning or sitting all interesting. It also includes “fat joints” in our hands and toes, although the weight loss from my surgery has made movement much easier and less painful.
Karen and Julie, I always have heard it as “We compare our ‘inside’ to other folks’s ‘outside’!”
Rebecca! Those roasts look delicious. I’ll bet they’re nice and tender.
My naughty little orange tabby girl has gotten past me two of the last four days and spent some “glorious” (for her!) hours outside traipsing through the thickest parts of my “garden”. Whatever comes up is my garden! Fortunately it happened early enough both days that she got hungry before late afternoon and came in to the sleeping porch. I shut the door after her, opened the access to the rest of the house, Andromeda, my Siamese, was perturbed that she couldn’t spend the afternoon in the sleeping porch enjoying the 90°+ that it gets in there on sunny days.
Almost but not quite caught up. All it takes is a day or two and I’m struggling!

It's interesting to hear all the stories re the sacrifices people made during wartimes. We owe a great debt of gratitude to those who leave hearth and home to defend us. In the past, many soldiers were so traumatised by what they went through that they never talked about it. Many suffered extreme PTSD, but were labelled as cowards, vilified, and some were even shot. I am thankful that nowadays, PTSD is recognised and treated.Just about to go and see if the Repair Shop is on today. One of the drawbacks of Bank Holiday Mondays is that they change the schedule.
☘️Terri
@cityjaneLondon Did you ever hear back from Repair Shop about your old doll?
Today I plan to go to my Craft Group for a few hours. I haven't been since before we went away. Some of my groups have already broken up for the summer. Most of our members are Seniors, and attendance tends to drop dramatically in late spring as members take advantage of low season holidays in the sun. Also as the weather improves a lot of them (including me) prefer to spend their time outdoors or working in their gardens.
If the good weather holds up today I will do some more planters after lunch.

Watching news this morning-tornados came through last night. They hit in surrounding counties. Hit last night around 11. My area just got heavy rain. Lots of damage it looks like, extensive power outages. Haven't heard of any deaths as of yet, but definitely injuries. Homes destroyed. Feel very sad for those in the path.
Very strange weather this spring. Hope the round of storms today don't bring anything similar.3 -
Feeling so cold today ... I've been out and about walking 6.6 km in wind, drizzle and decidedly chilly temps. And I haven't dug out my winter coat yet.

Dancing tonight. Other than that I hope to have a quiet day with some writing.
Trying to work out how I'm going to get to the funeral, which is scheduled for 10.30. That is not a good time for me. I have emailed an old London friend to see if she can put me up the night before, but haven't heard anything yet. She may well be on the other side of the world visiting her son who works for an NGO. Otherwise I will just have to pay the exorbitant price the trains charge for travelling at peak time.
Some of Ros's friends are having a 'Jamaican' ceremony on Thursday, but I'm not going to that. If I still lived in London I would.
The funeral invitation was from her sons, but there is nothing in there of the things I discussed with her, like the colours she wanted us to wear, or the fact that she did want flowers, not just donations to the charity. Of course a funeral is for the living who grieve and I am really only going to support her boys. I do not want a funeral for myself, just a celebration of my life with lots of good food. Ros has paid for hers in advance as her boys have no money. I don't suppose they are in any fit state to be creative.
I must say I hate those crematoriums. Soulless places. Plus hard to get to if you don't have transport. Oh well.

I was actually thinking of that when I wrote "cocoon of silence" but I didn't think "cone" quite described what I was going for.

Just heard back from my friend, Chris. She can put me up, which is great as I haven't seen her for ages. All my trips to London revolved around seeing Ros. It will make life much easier as her house is very near a direct tube line to the area of the crematorium. I will still have to get a bus from there though.
Chris and I used to get on very well, but I wouldn't say we shared intimacies. They have moved into a new, smaller house since I saw them last. They used to live in a house they bought in the early 70s, for very little money, and which they must have sold for over a couple of million pounds. Our generation, who bought in London, when it was very run down, did very well out of property as areas gentrified.
I am very happy to be seeing her and her husband. Unusually, I do also like her husband. With a lot of my friends I do not like their choice of partner.

Heather. So glad for you the plans to get to Ros's funeral are working out. Oddly, I always enjoy funerals. I think it's because most of the funerals I go to end up being family reunions.

Morning, afternoon and evening, all,
The flood news isn't good, but Corey's and my choice of living well out of Fort Smith, up in the foothills, has turned out to be prescient on our part. We're about 300 feet higher elevation than the river - and all the bridges into town but one have been closed, and that one's likely to close before the day is out. Corey's been told to stay home for now, which, while I love him, is annoying. I work at home because I LIKE working alone, and he will try not to bug me, but he's a guy. It's in the nature of the beast.
Ah well, minor annoyance, compared to those who are dealing with flooded homes and businesses and living down in the middle of the mess - Fort Smith literally exists in a large horseshoe bend in the river. It won't crest until tomorrow, and it's more than six feet higher than any recorded flood levels, so no fun for those concerned. Schools are all closed through Thursday, and I imagine quite a few businesses will be, as well.
Heather, I hope they give Ros a fitting send off, and you are able to say goodbye to your friend in a way that brings you comfort. I get you on the "friend's husband" thing... Of my nine brothers' and sisters' marriages and various girlfriends/boyfriends over the years, there has been one, out of all of those connections, that I thought a lot of--and of course, that's the one that my six-times married brother DIDN'T marry.
Hope all are well as we start our post-holiday week. Glad for a four-day week, and my one day in the office would have been tomorrow, as it's an all-staff meeting, but will probably stay home and call in. Corey may well be home tomorrow and Thursday, as well, if not all week. The one remaining bridge may well close, and the nearest bridge after that is around a hundred miles away... weird after living in the desert for so many years for excess water to be the problem. Oh, and the rain is supposed to hit us again this evening!
Love y'all,
Lisa in waterlogged Western Arkansas

After a second wind, my husband decided we could try to do more of the yard work ... sigh. We have now removed 2/3rds of an old arborvitae tree line that has been damaged by the deer and several years of heavy snowfall. He chainsaws them down and cuts them up. I drag what I can manage to the roadside where our town will eventually pick it up. I got the grass cut as well which was a good thing as it is raining and supposed to continue until Friday.
Just as we were heading to bed last night, my husband dropped a glass on the kitchen ceramic tile floor. The glass exploded into a million pieces and took a path through the kitchen area that is nothing short of amazing. I am still finding glass this morning ... even on top of the counters!
Have a good day!

Did 1 segment of AM yoga DVD then did the Shape Ultimate Bikini Body DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do the Biggest Loser Cardio Max DVD.
Karen in VA – I’m so sorry you’re going thru this work cr**. That must make going to work so very hard
Most everything I watch on TV is recorded. I just find that I really get impatient with all the commercials. You have no idea how many times when I was at Denise’s that I wished for a fast-forward button!
Happy Memorial Day to those who celebrate it. I’ll probably spend it in the pool.
Went to WalMart. Denise got me this float for mother’s day. Honestly, I really don’t know that I wanted it. It’s all vinyl. I wouldn’t want to lay on vinyl during the day….I’ll melt from the heat. It did work OK in the evening when the sun went down and it was cooler. But it was also a bit of a pain. So I took it back. Should she come here in the summer (which I doubt), I’ll just tell her that it had a slow leak
Speaking of cooking shows: Vince (Mr. pickey) was saying last night that he learned something from the Pioneer Woman. He learned that you put the plate in front of the plastic wrap then pull the plastic wrap and you know your dish is covered.
Went in the pool then Vince and I trimmed trees. Boy, did we trim. And I dragged all the branches to the back of the property. What I’m thinking is that when it’s cooler and I have my work pants on, I’ll try to pull some of those branches further into the woods so that the next time we trim trees, at least I’ll have room to put the branches. I did get a cut on my leg and had to put a band-aid on it. Blood got on my socks, but at least they were my work socks. Actually, I’m thinking that I’ll look at the Salvation Army for another pair
Mahjongg tonight. The gal whose house we go to made these chicken wire ornaments you hang. Well I asked her if she had any chicken wire left over, which she does. I spoke to the guy who does the props for the Green Room explaining how I’d like to have “dirt/dust” around PigPen. He suggested chicken wire, put tulle on top of it and sew it to the chicken wire creating the idea of “dirt”. Guess I’ll give that a try
Karen in VA – happy birthday to your gs. I find it very interesting how the previous generation felt it their duty to serve their country, our generation was trying to dodge the draft and now there’s no more draft. My father really never talked about the war.
Tracey – adorable shirt
Tuesday here: Did the Biggest Loser Cardio Max DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to take the water class.
Beth – I hate it when I break a glass in the kitchen. I find pieces of glass for days afterwards regardless of how well I clean it up

I was so cold when I got home I could not warm up for the longest time. Finally, I wrapped myself in a bathrobe and blanket and filled a hot water bottle. I feel OK now ... but I was seriously chilled there. That usually only happens when I cycle on a cool day and under dress a bit. But I walked and jogged to the university and got all sweaty, then my class was over before I had time to dry so I headed out again into the cold. Recipe for disaster!
Meanwhile, I'm editing a 53 page, 11,373 word document. The Main Assignment.
It's a group effort and I'm happy everyone contributed and contributed on time ... that's nice. It's rare, so I'm certainly appreciative! But English is not the first language of most of the 500 students in my class and of course not the first language of the 4 other people in my group. I feel for them trying to learn IT subjects in a foreign language, but I find all the editing a bit frustrating.
EDIT: And just as I posted this, one of my team members has come into the document and started editing her sections!

Lanette: We didn’t get our flag out and hang it. Life was full of houseguests and I forgot. We didn’t get out to the cemetery and leave flowers for my parents, either. :flowerforyou:We usually take flowers for Memorial Day and thank our active duty Military on Veteran’s Day. I don’t think there is a right or wrong to in this situation. We simply follow our instincts.
Margaret: I’m glad you heard from someone in the police department who wants things to change and may be in a position to get that change started. Your speaking out helps them realize a need for change. I hope they continue to follow through with better officer training and improved internal policies.
Barbara: I imagine our dads had experiences similar to one another in the Soloman Islands. My dad was aboard a ship that was attacked by Kamakazi fighters and had occasional nightmares about ship board fire throughout the balance of his life. :ohwell:
Sharon: My MIL had osteoarthritis similar to what you have described. Her hands & feet were swollen and seemed painful most of the time I knew her. Later her knees and hips seemed the same way.
Machka: It looks like fall has arrived in full force. Stay warm and dry.
Heather: I hope you are able to get to Ros’s funeral. It is a good way to celebrate her strength and courage and give you a chance for your final good bye. You can meet with your friends at a convenient time and share memories. :flowerforyou:
Lisa in AR: I’m glad you will be high enough to avoid flooding at your house. Stay safe. :flowerforyou:
Beth: I hope you get all the glass shards up and don’t find any in your bare feet. :noway:
The dog and I were the first ones up this morning, and now I’m hearing noises from upstairs. I suspect I’ll be having company down here soon. Coffee is ready and waiting. We’re looking at clouds right now and will supposedly be having sun peeks as the days goes alone. I hope we find some way to put fun into our day.

Hi, I am Red. I’m from Minnesota where the weather is finally warming up for outdoor activity. I have been on the weight loss train for about 20 years and am overall 72 pounds lighter than my heaviest. I have been working on losing since January this time and am down 42 pounds. I’d like to lose 6 more and then stay for the summer at 190. I’m 5’8” and 71 years old. My doctor has encouraged me to just work at maintenance after hitting 190. I’ll see how it goes. I want to keep the saggy skin to a minimum so working on exercise is also a goal. Happy to find a supportive group.10

Good morning ladies! This is the last Week of being up at the farm. Five weeks is a long time!! I’m glad that it is almost over and we can get back to normal!! I enjoy a much more leisurely lifestyle! We will have seven weeks of vacation… Not really we have a lot to do at our rental house. The ice dams really did damage this year! We are going to replace our shingled roof with a metal roof.
Kettle bell Workout
I finished four weeks of using the 40 pound Kettlebell again, I am feeling stronger but do not feel that I am ready to move up to the 45 pound kettle bell this next five week program. Instead, I am going to add a set of the 45 pound kettle bell into my program.
Goblet squat- 2x5X40 1X5X45
Russian kettle bell swing-6X7X40 1X7X45
I love this exercise! It takes very little time and the results are phenomenal!! Today I only have a 10 minute workout!! I have probably less than 20% fat on my body because of this exercise. I have the stomach of a 20-year-old!! Actually very few 20-year-olds!
I still am 1.4 pounds over maintenance! Thanks for all of the advice. I think that the extra weight is actually turning into muscle. My clothes are falling off me! My husband doesn’t mind LOL.
Have a great day everyone!

Have read and caught up, but don't really have time to post and comment. I am just waiting for Kaitlyn to arrive, we are on a mission for some wedding things today, we have 8 stops to make not including her getting her nails done. It will be a long day, but I'm looking forward to it as I rarely get alone time with her.

Machka9 - I used to feel this way about the cold when I lived in Columbus, OH. It seemed to stay gray and dreary from November through March. It was cold, windy and most of the time, snow-covered. Once you got cold and damp, you just couldn't warm up. Back in KY, hot and humid - I'd almost take the cold because my hot flashes are so bad. I know that's TMI. We have already been 90F (32C) and it's not even June yet!!
