WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR SEPTEMBER 2019

Rita - I really want to stop the allergy shots. I think they helped but are so painful anymore, pain lasting for days and days. I think I'd rather have my nose run, lol. The hives/rash I'm experiencing right now is due to the adhesives in the drape (I swear they used duct tape and ripped it off!) and then a secondary blow over the rest of the tummy which was where they used the iodine.

My allergy shots (for dust mites) went on for 3 years ...
Once a week for the first 6 months
Every other week for the next 6 months
Once a month for the next year
And then extending out 6 weeks, 2 months, 3 months ... until she decided I was done.
My allergist says that I should be good for 10 years from the time we finished which was in 2017. However, I do notice that when the Christmas decorations all come out I have a mild reaction and I also have a mild reaction in bedding stores or fabric stores where the stock doesn't turn over very often.
Are your shots coming to an end soon?

When we got home I sat in our recliner just being quiet. My soreness isn't painful, so I will not worry about it. I have gone thru menopause, so done with all that.

I was allergic to horses when I was a kid. But, I was a typical young girl and wouldn't stay away from the neighbor's horses. After a time, my allergies were gone. I'd never been on meds for it. The theory was that my continued overexposure to the horses cured my allergy.4

Lisa: Can you hear me cheering? Hope the grants you review provide valuable insights.
Michele: Any new grandbaby pix from your visit?
Allie: You have the chops to be an entrepreneur. I think you could really make any senior service, especially transport, a winner.
DH has been coming to the pool with me about every other day. On the days he comes, I do water walking or treading. When not, I swim vigorous freestyle and breaststroke laps. Next week the property manager will be on vacation and he has asked if I would assume a few simple maintenance tasks in the pool area while he's gone. Gladly! I can put DH to work, too. It's my happy place, so glad I can be involved in keeping it looking neat.
DB still job searching. Most prospects in his field are in NorCal, but he is really trying to secure something here in Denver. Today makes a month that he has been with us, and it has gone by so fast. He is sleeping better, only occasionally having to resort to taking a pill to ease the itching caused by alcoholic neuroma. The itching gets really bad at night. Does anyone have experience with this? Ideas welcome!
I'm in awe of the women tennis players in the U.S.Open. Speed, strength, grace and coordination. I wish I could still play, but it's not worth battering my ankles any more.
Meanwhile, the recumbent bike is calling me to come an help myself to some bonus calories burn. 🔥🔥🔥 Stay well friends, we can do this.

AGGH! My surgery on my second eye went well, but turned backward when I had a rough afternoon with pain that I had not expected. The first one did not hurt and this one has hurt a lot, so I ate over 500 calories in ice cream trying to comfort myself in the pain. Tonight it is a little better than it was, but the damage is done. I hate being so weak and falling back into the comfort eating...sigh...still way behind on reading, but since my vision is double, I will have to catch up later...
Hope you are all safe from the storms and the fires! Luci in WNC (far away from Hurricane Dorian)6 -
So far it’s been a pretty good week. My sister is behaving herself. My mom is doing Ok. They are not antagonizing one another. My sister is short cash, but that’s nothing new.
Prayers Allie for Chester. It’s never easy.
Stay safe if you are in Dorian’s path. My aunt weathered it fine in Florida.2 -

pip I sent you a private message.
Michele in NC You asked: what makes me a "semi-vegetarian". Simple answer: I rarely eat meat. It doesn't much appeal to me and its hard on my digestion. I'm also "semi-FODMAP". I'll eat a small amount of lean meat if my BF prepares something and I'm too lazy/busy to fix something myself, and I'll eat anything a host/ess offer because I don't want them to go out of their way for me or feel uncomfortable by my refusal to eat something they served :-)
Lanette I sure hope you're can get a handle the allergies and itchiness without having to endure further pain. {{hugs}}
Yep, I had a job interview yesterday. I was laid off last fall after working 13+ years with an US based international corp. I knew it was coming. All jobs in my dept were shipped off-shore. Since the lay-off, I painted and re-decorated my home (hadn't changed a thing in 10 years), looked into a few health matters and did a bunch of research in order to get my head around and pump myself up for losing weight. My #1 focus now is on my health and only want a part-time job (or something that will bring in a few extra bucks each month). I just began looking into options the last week in August.
Barbara in S OR I just noticed under your signature that you're inspiring word for September is "grit" . . . Grrhh-rrrttt!!! ! I like it
Day 5 "Reinventing Rhonda" . . .
Walked 1 mile. Not fast and not very far, but I did it and it was in 88' outside.
Was under the limit for calories again but slightly over limit for carbs and fat. I think remembering to eat at regular intervals would help, so I made a meal check off list and taped it to the fridge. Several reminder notes are now posted around my home. I think the BF is embarrassed to invite anyone over
On a side note, this is the first time I've ever joined an online "social" support group and I'm a bit intimidated over how well everyone's connected and keeps up with what's been going on with others and all the pictures, etc. But give me time and I'll catch up - You are all my fat losing/fat free family now!

Heather I know you have worked hard to get to the healthy person you are now. Thanks for showing us your "before" photo.
Can I ask how you started please? I'm really struggling. You said you had pain in your knees etc. I have started with knee pain and foot pain, I don't want to end up like my poor mum who can hardly walk now and is in such pain most of the time. I need to get a handle on this sooner rather than later.
Also love the quotes from Barbie and Karen, I need to concentrate more on what I can control - one of them being what I eat!
Still catching up, but need to get moving - a few phone calls I need to do first. a) sort the kitchen delivery/payment/fitting and b) contact the funeral directors to arrange dad's remains to be buried in the nearby cemetery.
Love to all

Rhonda – what makes you a semi-vegetarian???

I also "identify" as a semi vegetarian ... most of the time. I eat very small quantities of meat and can happily go several days without meat.

Viv Just to be clear, the quotes are from Barbie's post. I just repeated them because they caused a paradigm shift in my thinking. Like a puzzle piece clicking into place.
Here is a corollary piece of wisdom from my mom. I have shared this before, so it isn't new to many of you. She would say, "Do everything you can to get the outcome you want, and then let go of the outcome." It fits in with what Barbie said about what is in one's control.
These ideas are especially important to me because my disordered eating started at a very young age (21 months) as a result of a near-fatal intestinal illness caused by severe food poisoning. Several toddlers my age were sickened by bad potato salad at an end-of-year school/teachers' picnic in our community. I was hospitalized & in isolation on IV's for 2 weeks without parents, bottles, blankies, food, or anything familiar. I survived, but I was damaged goods. I remember none of it, but the changes were apparent to my parents. It took 2-3 years before some of the weird behaviors around food & the drive to please others began to normalize. I was left, though, with a distorted relationship with food that I have struggled with my entire life. It is frustrating, embarrassing, humiliating, pathological. Thank God I had the parents I did. In any case, accepting that I cannot control my weight, but can control factors that affect my weight, is a #Gamechanger for me. When I was little & sick, I had control over nothing, and all of my comfort/security was removed, and that was, by all accounts, traumatizing. Figuring out what is actually within my control is a lifelong project. One thing that I realize is that I can change my thinking by challenging the disordered thoughts as they arise and recognizing them for what they are.
Throughout my lifetime, I have been 100 lbs overweight, and I have had a normal BMI, and everything in-between. It's hard to say whether being overweight vs disordered thinking about food is the more disturbing. Despite both of these, I can choose to make good choices about food & activity, and I can continue to work on my issues.
Rhonda I was intimidated, too. It's hard to join a group of women who seem to have known each other forever. That's an illusion, though. There are always new people, and people come & go; even long-timers drop out sometimes. Women use & contribute to this group as it suits their needs, and you should too! Some women respond to just a few; some women respond to the whole crew. Feel free to post what you feel comfortable with. And if you have questions about how to post photos, etc., just ask! I did, & DJ showed me how to post cute animated emojis. I hope she is safe in Myrtle Beach. She left the group some time ago, & I miss her.
Wow, this was a tome!
Happy Friday!

Morning, afternoon and evening, all...
Rhonda - good words from Karen - I tried to respond to everyone on this thread in the beginning, couldn't do it, got discouraged, stayed around and found I was still accepted and warmly made welcome, just interacting with folks at my comfort level. There's no pressure to say lots to lots of people, just say a little when you feel you wish to.
Rori - I could hear you in my head the minute I found out we'd moved on to the second stage! It's honestly as far as I think it will go. I'm detail-oriented enough at grant writing to have been confident we'd get past admin review. After looking at all five of the grants I'm to review, one of the five is so good that if I had $100 million dollars to spare, I'd hand it over to them. The other four are on a sliding scale from really good to just not good at all. Only the top 500 move to the next stage. Since I don't know how many moved to THIS stage out of the umpty-thousand applicants, I don't know how hefty the competition actually is... but doubt we'll make it past peer review. Could be wrong!
Enjoying my vacation Friday (three more to go to burn my vacation days for the fiscal year. )
Love y'all,
Later,

Did Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred DVD today. The plan for tomorrow is to do the Fit Body Yoga DVD.
Have a dermatologist (routine) appointment in a few.
Rebecca – happy anniversary!
Debby VA – what part of VA are you in? Jess lived in Reston and her bf is there, wonder if he’s being impacted?
Luci NC – when you said “the damage is done” what exactly did you mean? Will the pain go away? When it does, will there be anything different? Sending good thoughts your way
Rhonda – I wonder if I would be considered semi-vegetarian. I do eat meat almost every day, but not a whole lot. I usually will give Vince (for example) a whole chicken breast and then have just ½ for myself. But my plate is loaded with veggies and dessert is almost always fruit. Love the phrase “reinventing Rhonda”. I, too, wouldn’t care if I went several days without meat. I know Vince likes it so I’ll just have a little bit
Need to get to the dermatologist. Will check in latter

Happy Friday from warm & humid SW WA State
Machka - after over a year of weekly and twice weekly allergy shots, I'd gotten down to every other week for the past couple months. Yesterday the runny nose and sneezing really started up, it had been 2 weeks since the last shots. I am hoping I don't have to start over with them. I know our house and neighborhood is loaded with allergens - dust mites, mold, grass and tree pollen, dogs (though they aren't shedders which helps). So I'm taking the next month to reflect on this.
Rori - glad your DB is doing well and yes, seems like time has really gone fast! Itching....GGGAACCKK!! Mine started back up last night despite oral and topical medication. Someone mentioned Celexa and there might be something to that. Don't want to start up on SSRI's. "What we think about expands" so I need to get my mind off it and think about other things. Might try to find a hypnotherapist as well. I'm a good subject and have a lot of experience with it.
Rhonda - crossing fingers you can find a part-time job and have more time to spend on your health and doing the things you enjoy. Makes all the difference. Glad you've had time to work on your home and make it a comfortable place for you. And yes, welcome to the group again.
Luci - so sorry to hear the second eye surgery was painful. Hope it gets better soon so you can enjoy seeing your world with "new eyes".
Allie - so sorry to hear about Chester - so hard to let them go. Kudos to Tom for being a caring parent. His little buddy (can't think of the name) will probably miss him as well. Is that one elderly too? Amazing that your DFIL is now out of hospice. He's the energizer bunny, due to your great care of him I'm sure.
Michele - I am curious, how did you and Vince end up retiring in the foothills of NC? Sounds like a beautiful place a la "Mitford" (Jan Karon series).
Finally, Lisa and Heather and others who are excellent writers (many of you are on here) - some day when you have time... since you are both published authors, how did you get started in perfecting your craft? Classes? Writing groups? Just curious.
OK ladies, that's the quick and dirty this morning. Tai chi in the park at 10 - I need to pick apples to share with people there.

Lisa, I am impressed that you got to the next stage on your grant proposal. I'm thinking good thoughts for you to move on.
Rhonda, I tried being a total vegetarian but found it difficult to create meals without some meat so I started eating chicken again. One thing that has helped me is that I rarely (maybe never) eat food prepared by someone else. My food preferences are so weird that I can't expect anyone else to fix me something that I'll eat. I like to get together with people to do something other than eat.
Kelly, I used to respond more to people in the morning until I realized that I could get out of my chair and exercise instead.

Chester today I picked him up and got him outside.. and bless his heart. I got some tiny pieces of chicken in him, a small slice of deli ham, and a carrot all chopped up. so thats a good thing, hand feeding him , and my DFIL today was having none of it, out like a light, but miraculously I got his breakfast in him while he slept he opens his mouth like a bird, ha ha , got his meds in ice cream, mandarin oranges and wheaties with milk.
one of our assistants is leaving for a better job, so she thinks I will get stuck assisting, but legally I am not allowed to. so we shall see. ugh cant get out of there fast enough

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semi-vegetarianism
"A semi-vegetarian diet (SVD), also called a flexitarian diet, is one that is plant-based or with the occasional inclusion of meat."
"All semi-vegetarians could accurately be described as people who eat a plant-based diet, but there is no firm consensus how infrequently someone would have to eat meat and fish for their diet to be considered a semi-vegetarian diet rather than a regular plant-based diet. The average American consumed an estimated 222 pounds (101 kg) of meat in 2018, so comparatively a semi-vegetarian would have to eat much less. Once someone is able to consistently forgo meat for 5+ days a week, they can be considered a flexitarian.
Recurring conditions of a semi-vegetarian include consuming red meat or poultry only once a week. One study defined semi-vegetarians as consuming meat or fish three days a week. Semi-vegetarianism may be the default diet for much of the world, where meals based on plant materials provide the bulk of people's regular energy intake. One estimate is that 14% of the global population is flexitarian."
These days I am eating a 85 grams of chicken 5 days a week at lunch simply because I need the protein so I don't get sore from exercise. Plus I eat a tiny bit more of chicken or mince (as much a 85 grams, but often less) at dinner several nights each week. So I'm probably not entirely semi-vegetarian ... but when I am on my own, I usually am.

I've been advised to do the following ...
-- vacuum frequently ... which I don't do.
-- wash sheets frequently and in HOT water and eucalyptus ... then hang dry them outside in the sunshine. We try to do that.
-- if we store clothes, wash them all is as hot water as possible and eucalyptus before wear. So in other words, if we store winter clothes during summer and summer clothes during winter, when we do the switch, wash everything ... and hang dry them outside in the sunshine if possible. I do that.
-- store bedding in plastic bags, and if it is stored for a while, wash before using.
-- try not to have soft furnishing, plush animals, carpeting and that sort of thing. I do have those things around.
It is also suggest to spray the house down with eucalyptus as suggested here:

I especially do that in the bedrooms and with the Christmas stuff when it comes out of storage and before it goes back in.

Lovely afternoon & evening with wild weather out the window.
Relaxing.
Movies: Rear Window & Robin Hood Men In Tights.
Dinner: Soup & Lava cake.
Cozy fireplace.
I've made it several times but it still amazes me how easy Lava cake is to make. Probably too easy!! It's so good too.
