Nothing worked, she'd find me and run half a pace behind me. I didn't mind being beaten by her, but it felt like she ran my race, not hers. She is younger and a naturally better runner than me. If she'd run her own race she probably would have beaten me by 2-3 minutes and I would have been perfectly happy with that.
Fortunately for me, and unfortunately for her, she is injured and doesn't run anymore.

Did you ever try a well-placed snot rocket?
My husband did suggest I try and trip her.
Funny I had the exact same thought.0 -

My legs were very sore today so I spend some time foam rolling after I finished. Took the pace super slow since I was hurting a bit. Will cut my run short tomorrow from 5M to 3M if I'm still feeling tender.

Great job @mbaker566 and Speed Demon. That looked like a fun, muddy run. Good pictures!
Rare evening run tonight (8 miles). Treated it as a recovery run, but a day late. Still need to work on slowing down and taking it easy.

I was trying to figure out how to add some states to my itinerary, including VA, and found this: https://www.itsyourrace.com/event.aspx?id=6635
Thoughts? It seems like 211 laps around a gym would be super boring. On the other hand, it should be extremely well supported and would not even require carrying water.
The other logistics challenge is that I plan to run in Allen, TX 2 days later. I would drive between the 2, though I know it would take longer than flying... but anyway, that means run this in the afternoon on 12/29 and then drive evening / all day on 12/30 to get to TX and run on 12/31. This is possible, but tiring...2 -

I didn't find anything about changing directions every so often. I'd be concerned about my ankles and hips if you only go in one direction, particularly with a race two days later.
No rain, no wind, no hills, bathroom and aid always within easy reach, and it's not on a treadmill, so this has some things going for it.

What direction would you want to go? Backwards? But yes, that is a good point regarding turning the same way 844-ish times (211 X 4).1 -

That hard floor I think would also be unforgiving just 2 days before a race.1 -
2.35 miles instead of 3 but at least I did something (almost didn't). My new run buddy/coach has an interesting run/walk philosophy. It involves walking and chomping the flowers and chasing bunnies or bikes.
I'm too lazy to look at where I am for the month. I *think* 52 or 53/72-90.6 -

It's almost as if they can't stand someone running past them. I don't think these are people following a run/walk plan. I can usually pick those out. They usually will look, move over and slow down, making sure they aren't in front of someone. When I've gotten into these passing matches with the rude people I just pick up my pace for a while to get myself far enough ahead of them.
Kids doing it don't bother me. They haven't learned pacing yet. I'm pretty sure 90% of kids run races this way.
At my trail race last weekend, I was probably a bit too close to one lady at the start. I didn't want to go out to fast and she had a good pace. I did eventually pass her but not until a point I was ready. Then later I had someone hang behind me. It didn't bother me because it seems to happen more on trails. People use others to pace plus sometimes it's a single track and even though you try to stay to right there isn't always room to pass.
I've not had too much bother with run-walkers, the only time it's an obvious problem is at drinks stops where people run in, grab a drink, then stop dead. Just move out of the way people. Literally three more steps back out from the table.
I have a bigger issue with being used as a pacer/windbreak. I don't mind it for a few kilometres, or even for the whole race as long as you don't do what a 'friend' of my used to do - sit on my shoulder for the entire 10k race and then kick off and pass me with less than 100m to go. That is definitely not what I was doing. She just happened to be running the pace I wanted to. I try not to get to close but obviously, when she slowed down I kinda caught up to her. I passed her maybe at mile 1, if not before. And I never saw her again.0 -

What you were doing is perfectly ok. I often ‘chase a person’, especially if it’s near the end of the race and I feel I’m flagging. And I will pass them if I can at the end, absolutely. But I wouldn’t draft off someone for an entire race then sprint past them at the end and then expect them to give me a ride home.5 -
Hello,
Once again I am optimistically hoping MFP groups can work. Us MFP daily loggers, who run and use a Garmin, this is for us:

This is exactly what @MobyCarp would do during races... picking off people to catch up to and pass. I think it can be very motivating to 'chase' a runner in front of you and be able to catch and pass them.
Also on kids in races. I had an experience in a large race where a track team (14-16 yos) was running. They 'ran' in clumps and by run I mean a bit in groups of 5-6 and then stop and laugh and talk. They never moved out of the way. They definitely could run and had speed to pass others but would get in front of other runners and do this. Apparently their coaches and/or other adult runners never taught them any running etiquette. I finally got so frustrated with them I stopped and told them, trying to be nice, that if they wanted to do this to move over, stay over and let other runners get by them. I also asked one of the groups to point out their adult runner/coach and I told that person, not so nicely, that while it was great that the team was there, they as the adult needed to supervise and ensure the kids weren't interfering with other people who really wanted to run and couldn't get around them.

@Lazy_Bones_85 - like @polskagirl01, I do the copy paste from page to page. There are also some usernames I can remember from using them so often or I can pick them off the list that MFP provides.
@RunsOnEspresso - I am sad about Shalane retiring but not completely surprised.
@girlinahat - hope you aren't out on the injury list for too long!
@mbaker566 - love that you and speed demon had a race together! The pictures are awesome, especially the mid-run mud bath
@rheddmobile - That is so scary! I thought of you when I saw the reports of the tornado in Memphis. So glad you are ok. I hope all our running friends in the Dallas area are all ok too.
I was not able to get my planned long run in over the weekend so had planned to run it today. Unfortunately dh needed me to take him to an eye appointment this morning. So instead I got up and out early enough to get in just under 4 miles of tempo running before we had to leave for the appointment. I also decided to go check out a trail near the doctor's office rather than sit around in the waiting room. I am so glad I did. I got another 1.3 miles on a lovely trail that I will definitely be going back to with Hobbes the Vizsla when he can run again. My plan right now is to try and get a long run in on Wednesday but it will somewhat depend on the weather. It was well over 90F again today with hot, dry winds and is supposed to get worse as the week goes on.
Our daughter is coming down this weekend for a wedding so I have to get my weekend long run in on Saturday before she arrives. If not it will get pushed off again to next Wednesday.

@ContraryMaryMary Sounds like your "friend" had issues. Insecurity or jealousy perhaps? She wasn't able or confident enough to come up with her own race plan, and seemed to have something to prove by beating you every time. Perhaps there are good times to just suddenly stop in the middle of the race!
I once had someone on my heels who was doing this weird throat clearing thing and it was breaking my concentration. Right on my back but she wasn't passing me. Finally I jumped off the path and stopped, and since she had no warning, she had no choice but to pass me, and I jumped right back in behind her (just not too close and not for long, because she really was faster). I'm guessing your friend would've just come back behind you though. You'd probably have been justified for yelling at her, or just flat out telling her that she needs to run her own race, or the riding together stops. Once or twice is one thing, but every race doing the same thing after being told to stop it? Rude.5 -
I should confess @ContraryMaryMary that I do use people as windbreaks. At my weight you need all the help you can get though it also means I don't sprint.2

i do too for a good part of races. no drafting or shadowing but i do pick a person i think i can catch. then i pick a new person. sometimes i do have strangers pace me but i try not to be too close. i like my personal space and assume others do too
i do think @MobyCarp was the one who suggested it.
@shanaber the canicross season is starting. we have another one in dec3 -
Oh goody. The president will be in town tomorrow. That means road closures and protests all right in the first mile or 2 of my run. Yay me.8
-
Over 7 miles for Kody & I last night. 3 miles of that was a set of four hill repeats. 2.2 miles from home to the base of the hill which is 0.4 miles to the top at an average grade of 5%. We ran up and down four times before heading back home. We didn't sprint, just kept up a steady pace, both up and down.
I finally remembered to break out Kody's Noxgear Light Hound LED harness.
We almost got hit in the busy intersection near home. Same story as always. A vehicle coming from the opposite direction turning left in front of me. In spite of having the WALK signal, in spite of Kody all lit up, in spite of me pointing my strong headlamp beam directly into her windshield when it became apparent that she wasn't slowing down, she kept on going, cutting through just a couple of feet in front of me. I may have raised my voice and I may have dropped an effenheimer or two. She's just lucky that in the moment I forgot that I was carrying a full dog poop bag and could have easily hit the side of her fan with it with such force that it split open on the window. Missed opportunity, but next time I'll be ready.
That puts me over 100 miles for the month and still on target for my 150 mile goal.

Oh yeah, I forgot this challenge thread has a group already. Well the Garmin one is specifically to geek out on the functionality of the watch and using it to train for running.
