Barbara, thanks! My recipe? I cheat. Its Bisqick! 1 cup mix, 1/3 c milk, mix and plop into simmering soup. 10 minutes uncovered, 10 minutes covered. Voila!
( With Bisquick you have to say Voila...💖).

bananasandoranges, let me clarify. My pen pals are people I have started writing to since last summer when I joined a snail mail Facebook group. We rent and race about all kinds of things. I have gals my same age for the most part and from all parts of the US, ( some international pals). When you write to a military person you have to be careful and if you do write about a problem, also write how you resolved it. They feel helpless enough, and not being home to fix it can create stress. I figured not harping on my son about not communicating was a stress he didn't need. 👍

Very true Barbie, I did it for both of us I guess. I want him to always know our door is open. I also write for me because I was feeling guilty because it has been a month since I had written him. Its difficult to write a letter when you don't get any feedback back.
My husband is stressed about the situation too. Enough that he declared in November that we were sending him a Christmas card but that was it. When we had sent him his birthday box in September, there was no acknowledgement from him. Husband contacted him to make sure it arrived safely, and he said it had.
His ship is in drydock, and he is presently in the barracks, so no issue of him being out to sea not getting correspondence.

The Mediterranean vegetables and feta was HEAVENLY! We used to make it regularly in our last house, but I haven't done it since we've been here. Just forgotten about it. I did an easy dipping sauce of tahini and lemon juice. It will definitely go on our rota. DH loved it.
So that's one vegan and one vegetarian so far this week. I could eat like that more often, but DH finds pulses a bit 'stodgy'. I think it might be Hairy Bikers chicken tomorrow.
We have a newly delivered mirror sitting in the hallway in a huge square box. We haven't opened it yet because we are too battered by our technology problems. Don't need more stress. I know it will take a bit of fixing to the wall above the mantelpiece. I'm hoping it will hang from the picture rail, but I'm not counting on it. The chimney wall will need a hammer drill if we have to fix it. The wall is just hard rocks. My son says he has one. I looked for a year for a mirror to go in that space, antique shops etc, and then I saw the exact one in a magazine. I read endless house styling magazines on line for free on Prime. I followed it up and ordered it. So, when we finally get around to opening the excessively enormous box we will know what we have got. I'm quite nervous. All these decisions are down to me.
We had the strangest thing happen. A string on the back of a picture in the living room gave up the ghost some time after Christmas and the picture descended to the back of the sofa. It needed putting back together, but was ok. Why the string broke I have no idea. It was old. Very old.
Then yesterday morning we noticed the outdoor washing line had come detached. On further investigation it had broken in the middle. It was there when we moved in so it could be old. Very old.
Two threads breaking in the middle within days? Hope it's not an omen! :noway:

I try to make my fiber and protein minimums but don't worry about the rest. On a 1200 calorie budget, it mostly works out to 50 protein/25 carb/25 fat. I think that's low carb but not keto. It works when I stick to it, but not when I overdo the sweets. No surprise there!
I've been in bed half the day. Might be coming down with something. My legs are achy, so I'm skipping the gym. Hope this passes.

Took the deep water class. The plan for tomorrow is to do the 10MS Blast Off Belly Fat DVD
Tracey – if it’s hard to keep up and work…well..you know what should be done….lol Glad it wasn’t a heart attack for Rodger and that he sees the importance of taking care of himself. That’ll also make it easier for you
Heather – we had this spot at the condo where I wanted an end table next to the bed. Before this we’d been using a chair. Well, I found some at this junkyard. They buy things at estate sales. I got the part that goes next to the bed. Now I’m sorry I didn’t take the hamper that matched. It would have matched the condo colors.
Has anyone else noticed that lately there have been fewer and fewer things on sale and fewer and fewer coupons? Also, that they seem to have shorter expiration dates
Lisa AR – what sorts of things can you make with that small loom? A scarf maybe?
Exercised, stopped at the Salvation Army to see what they had (didn’t get anything) then stopped at one of the gyms that I go to so they can get me on the Silver & Fit, then bought gas, then to Target to get more litter, bought honey (I like it because it’s VERY local), then the soup kitchen, then Food Lion to get meat for dinner tonight, now home.
They had a ham & cheese sandwich with broccoli soup and chocolate cake at the soup kitchen. I think Miss Sourpuss just wants to stay away from me (which is fine by me). She asked me where I was working. I could have been snarky and said "look on the board”, but I was nice and just said “#3”. Perhaps she feels that wherever I am, that’s where she shouldn’t be.
Regarding traveling: Vince did a lot of traveling when he worked – I stayed home with the kids. Now that he’s retired, he doesn’t like to travel, he’s more of a homebody. I do wish we traveled more, but I really don’t want to travel by myself. So I’ve just accepted this
Lucy NC – I’m sure that not wanting to throw something out is from my childhood. We were always told to clean our plate. But one of the good things about eating as a child, we very seldom had pies/cakes/cookies, etc for dessert. Dessert was almost always a piece of fruit. Not that I never had sweets, just that that wasn’t a regular thing in my family, fruit was the regular thing. It really surprised me when I started dating Vince and their desserts were always cake/pie/ice cream, etc.
Pip – how maddening!
I felt really bad. There was this one lady at the soup kitchen who I served, she left, but then she came back. Seems she couldn’t breathe. When I asked her if she had an inhaler she said “I can’t afford it”. When I got my inhaler it was only $10 but that might have been because I had insurance. Maybe she doesn’t. She seems like a really nice lady, I just felt bad that she couldn’t afford an inhaler.
I’m on hold right now with CVS Caremark. They are going to fill a prescription of mine but not the one I need filled. Why is it so difficult to talk to a person??? Update: I was told that they're waiting for a payment from me, if I don't pay they won't send out the prescription, which suits me just fine since I don't need it. I did call the doctor's office and explained how I won't be getting anything from them but to please call in a prescription to my local pharmacy and I will pick it up. This home delivery is such a PITA that I don't even want to be bothered any more.
Katla – you should see how Vince has the decorations! Remember, he’s somewhat OCD. I can’t even begin to tell you how many totes we have. Each tote has a label on it telling you what’s inside the tote. Plus, he built these “shelves” to put them on out of PVC pipe.
I wouldn’t even try keto. Like you, Tina, I love my fruits and veggies too much

Go with whatever "diet" works for you ... If I had to name what I do, it's somewhere between Mediterranean and vegetarian.

I thought I remembered you being limited in travel. might they make a definitive ruling at some point that he's unlikely to work again and thus freeing him from (I assume) being around in cases some theoretically appropriate job arises. it seems weird that the worker's comp is not nation-wide, as Tasmania is part of Aussie but I guess it must be like the states where different states are really dividing lines and not like France where everything is very national. Have you seen some nice places in Tasmania?
They've had an neurosurgeon from New Zealand come over to do an assessment. He has stated the my husband has next to no chance of working again. So they know ... but they keep him on the compensation and keep reducing the payments anyway (that's supposed to be an incentive to get back to work) according to the worker's comp law.
The law is written for people who have tweaked their backs, sprained an ankle or have carpel tunnel syndrome ... not for people with long-term/life long injuries.
Worker's comp is state not federal.
And yes ... we've seen much of Tasmania.

Hello ladies I got roped into assisting today.. Zina the other assistant her dad is in hospital not well at all. So she left 1/2 day6

Michele-We don’t have insurance and my inhaler cost 80.00,but I went on goodrx (years ago) and got a coupon for 20 at Walmart. The lady at the pharmacy counter said she Doubted it would honor the coupon, but it did.

Tracey-sorry your husband has had health issues. I went through many of those with my husband. He would go through short spells of taking care of himself, but had trouble sustaining. Also, it seemed like anything he got (even a cold), he was always convinced was worse than anyone else had. I hope it continues to focus on getting things in line. You also keep mentioning your hip pain-have you had it checked out? My hip pain progressed to bone-on-bone arthritis and I now have two hip replacements (which I do not regret). Perhaps some physical therapy may help?
Machka-you are such a free spirit. You are thinking of retiring to a foreign country and I am have difficulty deciding if I want to move from Ohio to Arizona to be close to kids/grandkids! Is there any chance that they will move your husband from Worker’s Comp to a true disability?
Rebecca-my mother, who was most excellent cook, used bisquick for any number of things. It’s really a pretty versatile product. Never been enough of a letter writer to do pen pals like you are, but it does sound interesting.Hope your son responds to letter.
Julie-I love my shredder. I realized quite a bit of what I was keeping around was papers I didn’t want to put in trash. I have reduced my home files greatly, but have more work to do. And those at work are a completely different story . . . .
Pip-stealing a headlight does seem strange. I once had someone steal a back wheel from my bike. I just chalk such things up to I don’t understand people sometimes.
Kylia-it is indeed raining again in Ohio. And lucky me-it was raining in Arizona when I was there!
Michelle NC-many people can’t afford things like inhalers without insurance. And even with insurance, the co-pays can be excessive. Makes me very grateful for the insurance I have.
Had good day at work. Need to finish drafting some documents over weekend for union negotiations on Monday but know what I need to put in. Went to grocery after work today. I am helping set up and serve a funeral lunch at church tomorrow so will be there for 5 hours or so. I really don't mind because I remember how meaningful and helpful the funeral luncheon was after my husband's funeral, so it feels like paying it back.
Trying a new cabbage soup recipe this weekend. Just decided having homemade soup on had was a good idea. My husband used to make a basic one with some regularity but I am making myself try new things. Will also make some balsamic chicken breasts in crock pot. Son and girlfriend are coming over Sunday to visit, so I may just make up both right after church (early service only this week) and let them choose if they want one of those for late lunch or if we want to go out and get something.
Didn't sleep overly well last night (stupid time zone changes). Finishing cup of tea then heading in to read and hopefully sleep well.
Take care all,

The saga continues, late last night oldest daughter messaged me and said she wouldn't be coming right now after all. She had several "reasons" listed, nothing she wouldn't have been aware of for weeks. I think I just have to step back and let her figure it out, she is after all 45 years old. I truly have to get off her roller coaster ride for my own sanity. I only slept 3 1/2 hours last night.
Tomorrow is the memorial service for my older daughter's ex husband. My younger daughter is married to his brother so she and her family will be here late tonight. I'll have six overnight guests this weekend. Good thing we have a guest house, also serves as our motor home. Lol
Much love my friends

Today is National Chocolate Covered Cherry Day!
I think I've done that one before, but it's special to me. My dad put a box of chocolate covered cherries in my mom's Christmas stocking every year for 48 years. I'm not a big fan myself, but I always think of Mom and Dad when I see those boxes!
Luci - I had to look it up! "The stand of oak trees outside PEC's headquarters building is also illuminated for the first time that weekend, glowing with more than 1 million LED lights." Wow!
Viv - I'm taking down our Christmas decorations earlier than usual too. We didn't put up that many since we weren't home on the day, but we have a lot of stuff coming up in the next month so I'm going to pack them all back up into the attic this weekend.
Janet - Your transformation is so stunning. I'm guessing there was at least as much transformation on the inside as the photos show on the outside. I hope you are very proud of yourself!
I'm back to my workout regimen after missing nearly three weeks due to the plague. My workouts aren't quite 100% and I still feel a little fluttery afterwards, but I am doing them. Philip continues to go to the gym with me twice a week. I'm so happy he's doing something for his health, even though I know he only does it for me.
We have a lot of health stuff to take care of in the next couple of months - dental appointments, mammogram, eye exam and new glasses, etc. Two people I know have come down with shingles recently, so I'm reminded that it's time to suck it up and plan on shingles vaccines too! We both had chicken pox and I really really don't want to get shingles.
I've never picked a new year's theme before but I think I'll try it this year. My word is "connect." I've always struggled for a sense of belonging but around the time we had to move to New Mexico is when I stopped feeling connected to anyone but Philip. I used to be a better friend but it's almost like the years of isolation made me forget how to do it. So this year I'll make a conscious effort to do better and to reconnect with my friends. I also made a 20 for 2020 list.
Onward into the 20s!

Yvonne - the plague???
I'm having fun with my IP. You would think I was a kid with a new toy. Tried making short ribs tonight. I had always heard that you can sear meat and then cook it. Well, I seared the short ribs and when I went to cook them, I got a "food burn" message. So I opened the pot. Nope, there was liquid, none of the ribs were burning. So I tried it again. Same message. I wondered if perhaps when you sear meat little bits of the meat stick to the bottom of the pan and perhaps that is what the pot thought was burning and so it wouldn't continue cooking. I took the meat and juice out, cleaned the pot, and had no problem at all cooking the meat.
I'm thinking that tomorrow night I want to try yogurt again. My IP comes with a different inner ring (is that what it's called?). They say that you should use a different ring when you make yogurt so that the flavor of something else doesn't get into the yogurt. Now I'll see just how much of the flavor will get into the yogurt.

Ginny - Do you have other family near you? I would be inclined to be near my grandchildren for sure, but they do grow up and get their own lives. It sure would be a tough decision.
My husband has been losing weight for a while but I guess neither of us really noticed. He was wearing a size 42 jean and is now wearing 38 and they are a bit loose, but not loose enough to go to a 36. I hope he continues this healthy approach to life. It is encouraging me to get back at it too. I told him tonight he needs to allow for some treats or he would give up eventually.
I am a believer of “everything happens for a reason” sometimes those reasons are very difficult to see at the time especially when it comes to deaths or illnesses. However, I believe I got this job because I would need the excellent benefits and the knowledge of a RN for a boss that could help me understand some of the medical things.
Rebecca - I pray that your son writes back to you. My grandmother and I had a long history of letter writing. I always signed all of my letters Love, your #1 Granddaughter and she signed hers Love, your #1 Grandmother. I was her only granddaughter but she wasn’t my only Grandmother. I now have all of the letters in both directions. She had them all in chronological order tied with a ribbon.
Those along with her diaries are one of my prized treasures.
I know there was more I wanted to comment on, but was trusting my memory more than I should have.
I have a 3 day weekend this weekend. I have some lieu time that needs to be used up so am taking Monday off. Tomorrow would have been my Dad’s 78th birthday, my daughters and I are going to go to see Little Women tomorrow night. I think he would like that we are spending the evening together on his special day.
Today was my granddaughter’s 4th birthday, I didn’t see her but FaceTimed with her she is getting her ears pierced for her present this year from her parents. We have an Elsa doll for her. Her party is on the 18th and I think I will make her a tickle trunk. This comes from an old Canadian children’s show called Mr. Dressup. It was a trunk full of dressup clothes and accessories. My girls had a very special lady in their lives that made one for them and it was truly treasured.
Well I guess I’ve written a novel so should sign off.

I'm almost afraid to put this out there, but my scale shows me down to pre-diagnosis weight (which is still high, but I'd lost 29 pounds before the lethargy kicked some months before diagnosis). I'd gained 8 of those back (could have been more but with the blood loss, who knows). When I did my two week post-op I had lost 2 of the pounds. My home scale is telling me I've lost the other 6. Scared to claim it before I see the doctor's scales in three weeks! Now to keep it off and start the losing again. That frightens me I won't be able to lose after I get better.
My most surprising accomplishment? Probably living! When the doctor admitted me on the 10th for blood loss he said I was critical. Records show that while I was in the hospital that I was losing more than a pint a day and that wasn't at my worst. The surprise was I didn't know that I was dying (along with the cancer of course). The accomplishment was that I lived! Woo hoo!
My word for 2020? Maybe restoration. I'm exactly 3 weeks past the emergency hysterectomy due to excessive bleeding as well as cancer. I'm still trying to figure out all of this but I'm getting there. I keep getting hit by realities like writing things like "I was dying," or "I have cancer." It's emotional, but I'm regrouping and I'm going to get there!13 -

Machka-you are such a free spirit. You are thinking of retiring to a foreign country and I am have difficulty deciding if I want to move from Ohio to Arizona to be close to kids/grandkids! Is there any chance that they will move your husband from Worker’s Comp to a true disability?
Ginny in Ohio
Nope ... that won't happen. Either we stay on Worker's Comp till who knows when or there might be a slim chance of a settlement of some sort. It's not our choice. But we do have a lawyer ...
One other detail is that his pension contributions stopped the day of the accident too, so we've lost nearly 2 years of pension contributions so far.
I've been thinking about moving to different parts of Asia for quite a few years, then we spent about 3 weeks travelling to a very small portion of Asia (Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan), and I liked it. I felt quite comfortable. But as with Australia and Canada, I found I preferred the smaller towns/cities. If I were going to go that route, I'd like to check out more of Taiwan and Japan (although it may be more expensive) and also South Korea.
Remember, I've moved all over western Canada, and then to Australia.
Regarding inhalers (ventolin, not longer lasting ones) ... the last time I picked one up it was about $6, although it may have gone up slightly since then. No insurance required.
Michele ... are you allowed to go and get one to give to her?
And I needed mine this morning!! Tasmania was blanketed with Victoria's smoke and the air quality was actually in the hazardous range.
We didn't know that, so we went for a 13 km bicycle ride which left me coughing for a while.
And now we're home again from our little trip round Tasmania. It is nice to be home, and in some ways hardly feels like we left!
Tomorrow is Sunday and Monday I'm back to work.

But life happens and I found myself unable to exercise like I use too...and you know the rest, i gained. I need motivation and figured this is one of the best places online to find it. Please feel free to message me if you have any great motivation ideas. Thanks6

Yvonne I need to be a better friend, too. I don't deserve my amazing friends. They insistently persist to stay connected despite my fickleness, and for that I am incredibly fortunate. Your post is a kick in the butt for me. (((Hugs)))
Karen in Virginia5 -
When we moved to Brighton and Hove to be near the grandchildren we were both clear in our minds that we were doing it for ourselves as much as for them. We had already made one move out of Central London, where I had lived for 40 years. We investigated Brighton by renting an apartment for a holiday and visited my son often. I had lived 20 miles away as a teenager, so it felt very familiar. The biggest thing we had to decide on was which area we wanted to live in. It took quite a few visits and traipsing round with estate agents to make that decision.
The question is, would you like to live there even if your grandchildren weren't there? Do you feel comfortable there? Are there things for you to do there?
For me it was a no brainer, I knew I would love it. For DH it was a bigger decision, but he also loves it.
You have to do it for YOU.
