Kim- I hope your mom is feeling better. There is so much cough/cold crap going around.
[b Karen in VA[/b] Lilliana looks so adorable!
Viv UK Prayers being said for your SIL. Have you checked out Clutterbug? Cas is amazing! She really helped me realize my organizing type and gave me skills so that it works for both my husband and I. Decluttering I think, is an on going thing. I like things minimal on the surface. Husband likes to see lots of things. I have our home somewhere in between. Great job on the kitchen! My problem isn't necessarily putting things back, but it has to be easy to put away otherwise it is staying where it is or shoved where it doesn't belong.
Allie I thought working with my family was bad. You deserve sainthood for staying with that boss.
Heather UK You are busy busy too! I am glad you liked the singing.
Welcome to all the new ladies! Check in often, reply when feel the urge, let us know your name and generally where you are so we can keep everyone straight. You won't find a more supportive group of women!
Okay ladies........What has gotten into me? Not only did I make goals and write them out but I made a spreadsheet today for accountability!!! What?!? That is so not me. I hope I can keep it up. I know, goals don't require perfection, but hoping spreadsheet will help keep me on track.
My husband had to be up at 330 this morning to prepare to go on his final hunt this season. I woke up at 3 to visit bathroom. He woke up at 315 and started to turn off the TV which I apparently left on when I fell asleep. I asked what he was doing and he said turning off TV. I let him know that he would just be turning it back on in 15 minutes-LOL! I got up, got our coffee, read for a short time. I then realized that my carpet in hallway and dining room needed cleaned, so you guessed it. I shampooed carpets. Early morning meant they would be dry before "Sharkey" made his run around the house. I took husband to hunting spot, came home and vacuumed the carpets with regular vacuum. Sharkey does a nice job, but not really deep cleaning. Got ready for work then realized I had some extra time. I got in my Daily burn exercise before work. It was slow day in the shop today. I printed and answered emails, called and put away parts orders that came in, cleaned the guys bathroom-YUCK!!!!!!. I don't know why 3 grown adult males can't see that their bathroom needs cleaned!!!!!! I double rubber gloved and threw away the towels I used. Ughh. I organized a closet with parts in it. Swept the back of the shop because once again, the men don't seem to notice the friggin mess. Oh, and I vacuumed the front of the shop. Was sitting down to chat just before we closed when there was a loud boom and a flash of light. I figured transformer blown, but we still had power. We looked but saw nothing. A customer who was out on the street called our shop and let me know that one of the transformers in front of our shop was smoking. Great....I called the power company then shut off all the computers just in case. Heated dinner (leftovers) for us and a guest, cleaned kitchen, need 500 steps to hit 10K-mmmmm. That might not happen! I am exhausted and headed to bed. Oh, first I have to go get Sara from outside.
Sleep well ladies!
Prayers for those in need.
Hugs just because I like them!

Welcome Newbies and Welcome Back to those who have returned!!
I've read to page 12 - trying to catch up...
Heather Excited about reading your books! I sent my address in a private message. 😊
Kate The pictures and descriptions of what happens in the UK for the children (and adults) looks and sounds great! Christmas always goes so quickly here in the US – especially since it is so close to Thanksgiving.
What to eat I wish there was a standard which was totally correct for every body and made it easier to choose what to eat. I am still struggling to learn what to make (I can’t seem to get excited about cooking anymore…I learned with lots of butter, salt, and sugar, so higher protein, veggies, low carb is a whole new life for me and not nearly as fun!) I miss my terrible nutrition!! I eat too many Atkins bars (so easy to grab from the cabinet) and don’t eat enough real food. I notice when I eat healthier meals I lose weight, but it’s often when we go out and I can just choose their healthy options.
Katla I love your resolution to have fun every day!! One of the important ones. I hate the idea of eliminating alcohol entirely (even though it is by far a wise idea for me health-wise). I really enjoy a glass of wine or a beer a couple of times a week. I don’t drink mixed drinks because they have such a high sugar value. My grandpa who lived well into his 90s drank a cocktail every evening. He stayed healthy and sharp right up to the end. I suppose a lot has to do with how you live the rest of your life.
Introverts Although most people wouldn’t classify me as an introvert, I can totally relate to everything on the list. I do talk nervously with people, but I am much happier hidden away or as a fly on the wall. I have social anxiety which causes me to hide away often.
Annie Hope you are okay and that resting up kept you from getting too sick!! So much going around right now!
Michele Confusing on people not having insurance who are low or no income. I guess it’s the deductible that keeps them from being able to have it? I have healthcare.gov at almost no cost due to low income. Must be a no income situation. I have looked at recipes online for the IP and it makes me consider getting one. The foods look so delicious and it’s exciting to think of being able to cook so quickly. I miss the days of the pressure cooker, but of course there were too many accidents being reported with them so eventually I got rid of mine.
Ginny I love having soup on hand – especially on these chillier nights! Homemade is so much healthier and better tasting. My brother was giving me advise on how to make it. I hadn’t cooked the veggies in olive oil before adding the broth before, and he made suggestions for spices. It made so much difference. I looked up some recipes and sure enough, that’s how the recipes were written also.
Meg Hope you enjoyed your belated Christmas!
Janet Hope all went well with the memorial service. So sorry your daughter isn’t moving closer. You do need to be sure to take care of yourself (as you know). It’s a shame you are having such difficulty sleeping!
Yvonne Glad you are able to start exercising again and the plague is better! Whatever keeps going around is putting people down for such a long time!! I’ve also started the new year with connections. It’s the 5th, and I’ve gotten together with 4 of my friends so far this year and have plans to get together with others this week. It has been really satisfying and has helped me feel much less isolated.
Tracey I love your plans for your father’s birthday! I imagine he was looking down on you and your little women!

Did Bob Harper’s Ultimate Cardio Body DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do Denise Austin’s Fat Burner DVD.
Jess leaves to go back to Iowa today. She’s going to stop at a friend’s in TN first. Not sure how long she’ll stay there. I have my care package all ready for her plus some food frozen that I’ll put in an insulated bag. I’m sure her friend or his sister or mother have a freezer she can borrow. Starting to get Christmas things down. Vince wants to start the outside today, which is fine by me. In a way, I’m sick of the holiday. It’s been long enough. I don’t seem to mind it being up earlier, but I’m not a fan at all of leaving it up after the holiday.
Put some of the fish from Christmas in the freezer so I could start to clean out my refrigerator and get back to normal.
NYKaren – yea for you going back to that treadmill
Karen VA – That was so nice of you to go see your mother. I’m sure it makes you feel good to know that you did that. I know that as a mother I don’t really tell the kids when I don’t feel good because I don’t want them to worry and change their plans for me. I guess that’s mothers. Lillian is so adorable
Yesterday I went to one gym to get enrolled in the Silver & Fit. Seems I need a fitness ID # and they couldn’t get it from my ID #. I was on hold for over an hour to finally talk to someone to get it. I suspect what they do is they do something else for a while and then answer the phone. Because it took them only about 3 minutes to answer my question.
Carol GA – oh, I’m more than enjoying the IP. Made yogurt yesterday again. I was thinking there was something wrong with my IP, but nope, it looks like it just needed to be unplugged and then plugged in again. Right now the yogurt is draining in the refrigerator. I do want to use up some of the things I have in the freezer for dinner so I may not use it for a while. That is, except for more applesauce! That stuff was gooooodddd. Update: made hard boiled eggs today
NYKaren – yes, the bone density is the easy one where you just lay on the table. The only thing is that you can’t wear any metal (like a zipper on your pants, you usually have to take your bra off but they give you on of their very fashionable gowns).
SuziQ – great pictures. Are you trying to lose MORE weight or just maintain?
We got most of the outdoor decorations in. Vince wants to stop because his back is beginning to hurt him. It should be nice tomorrow so we’ll probably take down the arches. But first, I have a dentist appt. Really, I wish I’d been able to change it. Newcomers is having their general meeting at the local Community College where they have a simulated hospital and Newcomers is getting a tour of it. I think that would be really interesting. Unfortunately, my dentist appt is for 10:15, right during the meeting
I am so frustrated with Blue Cross Blue Shield. They advertise that with the Silver and Fit you can go to any gym. To me, any gym means any one that accepts Silver and Fit. I even called them in Nov. and explained that I go to three separate gyms, will all three be covered and I was assured that I could go to any gym. Well, the truth of the matter is that I can only go to one gym (say LA Fitness). I can go to any gym as long as it’s an LA Fitness. If I’m away and need to go to a 24 Hour Fitness, sorry…out of luck. What a bummer. You can be sure that come September I’ll be calling to get another provider.
Jess left for TN late this morning. Now I get to clean her room. At least I can do that at my leisure. I gave a box “care package” and a bag of frozen foods. Plus, the bottles of wine that we had. We’re not wine drinkers at all. I did keep one bottle of one type. It’s a super chocolatey wine, more of a dessert wine. Vince calls it “alcoholic yoo hoo”
Taking the decorations down today I couldn’t get over how many holes there were in the ground, deer looking for food! Does anyone know if there is a deer repellant evergreen bush that doesn’t grow beyond 4 to 5 feet (actually, we can probably do one a bit larger). Is there a colorful evergreen bush (not flowers) that is also a deer repellant?

We stayed on for the Classical section afterwards, just to see what it was like, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Old Italian opera and a Madrigal. We will have a listen on YouTube to get familiar with them as it's far more difficult.
Coming back I bought white irises from the flower shop and I have put them in my new vase. Spring has sprung!
Rebecca - would you enjoy something like that? There must be something up your way.
Love liquorice, by the way, especially Scandinavian. Yummo!
Some of you may remember I absolutely love Burns Night, where you eat haggis and drink whisky. Google it if you are not familiar. Last year we had haggis with my AF son and no whisky. Some years we have had a few guests. I love it because the menu is easy! My son is doing Veganuary, so he's out. I asked my brother and his wife, but they are away, so DH asked his cricket friend and his wife. They said yes, and will stay over. :drinker: I am especially pleased as they are people who much prefer a hotel, but last time he came over for a cup of tea I showed him round the house and the guest accommodation. It is quite separate with en suite. (Normally my bathroom) I love all the fun with the themed table, the silly ' wee Jimmy' hats, and the business with the haggis. I always put on bagpipe music. So, hooray!
Also arranged to meet my friend next week for lunch at The Salt Room, which is on the seafront and has a glassed in terrace. Always wanted to try it. It's mainly fish and seafood. Hooray again!
Much love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

@Lilylady3k … what kind of cycling do you like? Learning Spanish is a great goal. If you’ve ever learned Latin or French, Spanish comes relatively naturally. I have taken one Spanish course and didn’t have any trouble with it because it reminded me of French, but easier than French. I see you’re teaching English … I was actually pursuing options to teach English overseas when all of a sudden I was taking my Bachelor of Education. Part of me would still like to teach English somewhere.
I took French in HS many moons ago. I'm picking up Spanish but it would be much better if I could immerse myself or at least practice talking more.
Teaching English has been fun! All the adults I'm teaching are well educated just moved here for family or other reasons. At the church we have foundation + 4 levels. I'm teaching level 2 where they know vocabulary but need practice talking and getting the verbs, grammar, contractions right. I'm in no way an English teacher or ever been in education but the program materials (teacher, student, activity books) are terrific. It gives me an alternative plan ... learning to teach English ... I might be able to travel and teach in one of the programs that my friends have pursued in Europe. I recommend it for a volunteer job or to pay for expenses when wanting to travel abroad since they house you, feed you and pay you!5 -
Regarding the bushfires ... the main fire area is in the SE corner of the mainland. There are a few other spots up the east coast and along the south coast (especially Kangaroo Island near Adelaide), and a couple in Tasmania (where I live).
Meanwhile, there is a cyclone which has made landfall in the NW part of the mainland and is currently dumping a massive amount of rain up there.
I am not in danger of being affected by the fires right now, except for smoke. Some days have been very smokey.
The first image is where the main fire area is located.
The second image shows the rainfall predictions for the next 3 days with pink being the most rain.
The third image shows the rainfall predictions for the next 10 days with pink being the most rain.

Good luck getting back into the swing of things. I just cleaned my house today after getting all the decorations returned to the attic. It feels great. But yes I'm still struggling with menu planning and running to the grocery store way to often or eating out. I too will be taking this weekend to reset and get back into a grove.4 -

I like black licorice! I have a plant in my yard for years called Mexican Marigold. It smells like licorice and the flavor is anise-like.

Lisa - congrats on the new Grandson, what a cutie!
Sharon - you look wonderful and so happy!
Kylia - welcome back! I understand your worry for your daughter. Shortly after my youngest got her licence she took a job (for me) driving up to 6300 miles per month over three provinces in some very remote areas in Winter. I don’t know where my mind was when I offered her that job.
Rebecca - I’m so incredibly happy for you. I understand how your son felt. I have had to make those uncomfortable calls where you had let time go by too long. Mine was with my Grandmother and I was worried about the lecture I would get. I think you handled it brilliantly. Sorry about your pen pal, I agree her loss.
Kim - glad you were able to help your Mom get treatment and that you were able to be there for your nephew. I would not be counted as a friend if it meant I had to like black licorice, glad that’s not how it works. I personally like all the different opinions it means you get a different point of view.
Machka - thanks I hope I can keep up with it. I don’t have any time at work to catch up but am going to try in the evenings to at least say hi. Just won’t be able to comment to everyone most likely.
Karen in NY - love your one day streak.
Allie - I pray you get that new job soon. Your doctor is a terrible employer and you deserve so much better.
SuziQ - you look lovely.
Ginny - so much going around up here too. One of our staff members was sent home today during our meeting because no one wanted to be near her.
I had a root canal yesterday and surprisingly was not in much pain afterward. I go for a filling and the post for a crown on the 21st. I have been petrified of a dentist for years so have a bit to spend to get my teeth on order. They will be done by end of February though I think.
Had 3.5 hours of meetings today, what a long afternoon.
Rodger is down 8lbs since Dec 16, it will be nice to see what his bloodwork is like in March. I’m very proud of him, his commitment is remarkable and is making me get back on track.
We have had a very mild winter so far with temperatures hovering between 0 and -10 Celsius. It is supposed to be -25 by Saturday and I hope it’s not like last year where we were in a polar vertex all February long.
My granddaughter got her ears pierced yesterday for her 4th birthday. It was the only thing she asked for. She had been told it would hurt but she said that was ok. On Sunday she told me she was a “ittle bit, nervous and very ‘cited”. When I asked my daughter how she made out she said she did well and had been given permission to use one bad word if the pain was too much. She used the F word after the first hole and nothing after the second.
Well I should get off here and give my thumbs a break. I am using my phone rather than a computer.

Tracey, what a wise mom to give her daughter permission to use a naughty word of it hurt! I’m amused that the one that she used was the “f-word”. I’d never heard it back in the protected 1950s until I was 12. I asked my boy buddy what it meant, then didn’t understand his explanation - probably because my parents had explained all that using correct scientific language. Lol.
I’m still battling the cold, although my head is almost clear now. I still cough up a bit of crap now and then.
I’m so glad to back with you all! My “peeps”! Did I tell you all that I have my next trip to Oaxaca Mexico booked for May? I’ve just fallen in love with that place and those people. I’m booked into the same hostel in a 4-bed women’s dorm. It’s off to itself in the same area as the private rooms. I also plan to get my dental needs taken care of there. Dental insurance that has decent coverage is terribly expensive here, and the copays are outrageous. I can get new partials made there and have a two week trip and still not be out of pocket more than I would be here for just the dentures - WITH insurance.
I fly to San Jose CA next Tuesday and immediately begin driving north with my DSIL’s car and belongings from his construction job there. He has another day to finish, then will fly north, leaving me to navigate the Siskiyous and head north from there. He has to be back to start another job up near his home if he doesn’t want to be shipped off to the East Coast for another!
Road trip!! Woot-woot!!

Rebecca - Wow how great he responded! and so sad about the penpal friend "dear johning" you - I think that the attitude if we don't agree completely, we can't be in conversation is part of the reason for the divide in America. And for most of us there are tons of things we agree on and just a few that we don't. If we had to agree on everything this forum would not exist. Heck I love black licorice and if we had to have that in common I would have few friends indeed.
Kim

Sharon: Welcome back. You have been missed! I’m sorry that your D3 and DGS4 had a conflict over your car; not a nice experience for you. I’ll bet you’re happy to be back at home. :flowerforyou:
WendyWoodard: Welcome! Stop by often to give and get support.
Luci in WNC: I chose to discontinue alcohol because it was causing fuzzy thinking and one tended to lead to another. I am happy with myself for the choice. I’m feeling better every day and I’ve already lost some of the weight that had sneaked back up on me.
Michele: My insurance pays for a gym membership for me. If I go to an additional gym, the cost is on me. :ohwell:
Machka: I hope the rainfall is robust enough to put out the fires.
SuziQ: I agree with Machka. You look great!
The bone density scan was easy. NYKaren is right, you just lay on the table, no fuss. They only scanned my hips. Parking at the hospital complex was also easy. DH gave me a suggestion that was right on target. He said to go to the main hospital driveway and have the parking attendants take care of my car. They parked it for me and brought it back to me when the bone density scan was done. YAY!!! No stress and no worries.

Kim Well, you can't rid of me that easily. I love black licorice. My mother loved it too. I hope your mom is feeling better in a jiffy. I got a call from my friend in Nebraska one day in 2001 saying she had seen my mom at the grocery store that morning & she seemed out of breath. I was on the plane a couple of days later and she died from breast cancer metastatic to the lung a month after that. She was my best friend ever.
Barbara I can hardly wait for the joys of Medicare. I am delaying as long as possible, after my initial foray into the morass. At least now I know what Medigap & Part D plans I will probably choose when the time comes. I can put it off for another few months because my employer is generous enough to keep me covered, even though I am no longer working full-time.
Machka I love your auburn tresses but I think you'd also be gorgeous as a salt & pepper…
Amber Awwww, JR yelling for Sissy...
Ginny Did both of the itchy face episodes happen when you were warm (exercise, hot shower, etc)? Because some people develop an "allergy" to heat or cold that causes itchiness & even sometimes hives. We had a physician at our workplace who rode his motorcycle to work in the cold one day & his whole face puffed up with a giant hive! He was OK but it scared him.
Evelyn Maybe Vancouver could send some of that rain to Australia.

Katla in Beautiful NW Oregon
The rainfall isn't really going to help the fires at this point unless it is a lot. Right now, what little they are getting is just preventing backburns and making it a bit difficult to work.
It does need to be a couple days of solid, steady rain with accumulations in the double-digits (mm).

Karen VA can Lilliana be any more adorable? Enjoy every cuddle with her.
Sharon I am inspired by your solo trip to Mexico and it is so smart to get the DDS work done when you are there, it is sooo crazy expensive in the US.
Work errands after school yesterday but I didn't sink into the couch afterwards, so 2-day streak! I love marking my calendar when I am building a habit, simple and effective. The other strategy I use for staying on top of chores, I keep post it notes with step by step chores; it feels pretty great to check off and toss notes away when complete. For more complex or ongoing work, I use a steno pad, one side with what I need to do, step by step and the other side with notes/contacts etc. to get to the next step. For some reason having it written down gives me peace.
Do any of you keep an idea notebook? I love it for recommendations, quotes etc.

Machka - Yes! That's why dancing, where you have to remember moves etc is the perfect exercise. When DH complains that he can't remember the sequence I tell him, that's the point.
Our dance term begins, in a nearer venue, on the 22nd, but we won't be able to go that day as there's a clash with our French Circle. We will start the following week. Can't wait!
Tonight is French Circle and it's meant to be a French Antilles party. There is no further info, so I have no idea if there is food, music etc. We will have a light supper before we set off to cover all options. No idea what to wear.
Barbara - The Singing for Pleasure isn't the one we shall be looking for on Utube, it's the complicated early Italian opera and the Madrigal. We only stumbled into that class by accident when people stayed on for it, it wasn't advertised. I don't read music properly and it was hard, but I loved it. Good brain food! Apparently it is on Utube, so we can have a listen and get familiar with it.
The SFP class was mostly show tunes and pop music from our era. Great fun. The guy who runs it is terrific.

Good morning!
Going to be in low 30's F today. Warmly dressing. Calling for 60 degrees F on Friday....crazy winter! I have loved it being warmer, but not good for snowblower sales and service.
Massage tonight. Then need to run a couple of errands. Tomorrow I have to drive to Columbus (about an hour) for a training class. Tomorrow night is hair coloring/cut. Crazy week.
Next week I know we will be home as Barrett Jackson starts. It is our tradition to watch. I love guessing the selling prices of the cars. I am saving to be able to take my husband to Scottsdale most likely for his 60th birthday if not before. Also want to go to Shelby America. It will be car show season soon !
Better get my day started. Have a wise choice day and something that makes you smile!
