Right after the toilet paper run I read an article explaining that Australia is apparenty dependent on imported toilet paper from China, and back then it was a relevant concern that Australia might run out of toilet paper for real if borders were closed or the factories in China were shut down. Then Australians took their grief about it to the internet, internet followed suit and madness ensued globally.
Don’t know if that’s exactly what happened, but the newspaper I read it from tends to be reputable.

Yep, factories in Sydney, Brisbane and Perth for Quilton. If it wasn't for that rumour I doubt there'd have been a problem.

Premier Daniel Andrews has announced Victoria’s state of emergency will be extended for 12 months beyond the scheduled September 13 finish date.
Mr Andrews said a decision was yet to be made as to when the Victorian Parliament would sit to pass the bill but it would be made “available at the appropriate time”.
He said they had to assume a vaccine would not be available before next year and had to correspondingly extend the lockdown measures beyond the normal six-month legal limit.
“Those sorts of rules are all a product of the state of emergency and the provisions within the public health and well-being act need to be changed to reflect the fact that while we would all love this to be over by the 13 September, which is when the act says the state of emergency must end, that is just not going to be the case,” he said.
“We are going to have this with us for a considerably longer period than that.”3 -

They aren’t actually Clorox brand, but Menards has bleach wipes and hand sanitizer, and a good supply of both. I haven’t seen the Clorox brand since this started.
I only said Clorox because that was the brand mentioned in the post I was x responding to. To be clear, in my area (suburbs of major metro area) I haven't seen any brand of disinfectant disposable wipes since early March. We don't have Menards here, but I do shop at several different grocery chains and a couple of drug store chains.
Lynn, I don't know if this will be true in your area (there seem to be a lot of odd localized differences), but hereabouts I noticed that the big-box home improvement places (for me, Lowe's is an example) did seem to start getting a supply of this sort of thing before the same items started showing up on my routine grocery rounds.
(I wouldn't have been in the home improvement places - not one of those out ramming around looking for home improvement supplies because of stay-at-home orders! - but a 17-year-old 100% flattened my rural mailbox with a car 🙄, so I kinda had to deal with that, and not all needful things are easily ordered sight unseen, especially for a homeowner who doesn't know what the blip she's doing 😐.)

I'm taking a week of staycation, and I thought I might make some forays to stores during weekday hours that might be less crowded, so I'll put that on my list of places to try.2 -

I was across the street from a Kroger yesterday (went to Dollar Tree for Halloween stuff lol) so I picked up some of the "cream of..." soups I can eat. They were a decent price too so I was happy. Got 3 of each, so 6 totals. Next weekend I will add some broths to my list and maybe one more bag of Jasmine rice. I don't have space for the super big bags from like Costco, but Aldi has good sized bags for a decent price. I eat a LOT of rice as I eat a lot of Asian based recipes.
As for Clorox style products... I have a couple things of wipes and 2 bottles of spray. I also have hand sanitizer, though I may pick up another bottle. Oh, and Costco had all of those things in spades Friday so if you have a membership, you may want to try there. Got some disposable masks to just have on hand. Going to put some in a baggie to keep a few in the car just in case I forget my reusable ones.
On the upside, being stuck at home so much has gotten me off my butt and cleaning/organizing. I'm working at home so I normally only go our 1-2 times a week. Thus my home environment is a lot more important to me. So I have gotten some projects done that I have been putting off. It's been awesome.
this raises an issue I've begun thinking about: Halloween.
For those of you who typically hand out treats, what are you planning to do this year? I don't have much hope that we'll be back to normal, covid-wise by then, and I have a sad cynicism that the folks most likely to let their kids knock on strangers' doors in this situation are the people most likely to have a much looser social-distancing standard than I have adopted.
I'm not feeling super comfortable about opening my door to 50 people shouting Trick or Treat and expelling droplets 2 feet from my face (well, to be fair, in recent years about a quarter of the kids just stick their bags or plastic jack o'lanterns out and don't say anything, which seems less fun to me -- I always enjoyed the hollow pretense as a child that there would.be reprisals if no treat was forthcoming).
We live in the country, so we don’t get many trick or treaters anyway. I would like to think common sense will prevail, and people won’t risk it. Maybe virtual get togethers with friends and family will take place instead.

I never understood why there was such a run on TP either, but the hoarding resulted in an outage for about 7 weeks in my area. I almost ran out... if I had run out, I was planning to use paper towels (until those ran out because I couldn't get more of that either) and throw them in the trash so they wouldn't clog the toilet. People who have traveled internationally knows that this is what they do with toilet paper in some places anyway.
And if you ran out of paper towels, use newspaper. But that's not going to work when everyone stops reading the printed ones and go totally online for news.1 -

I will still be celebrating because it is Samhain (the pagan new year). That said, there will be no large get togethers this year as the community is taking it all very seriously around here. Luckily.
I also will not be handing out any candy. We don't get many trick or treaters, but it's not worth the risk to me. Honestly, anyone who lets their kids go door to door during a pandemic, especially with the numbers we are still seeing here, is insane. Then again, so many people are anti mask and believe BS cures that I also wouldn't be shocked.12 -

We currently have no active cases where we are- I have a feeling Halloween will proceed in our town with masking as long as things don't go poorly with back to school. I will probably leave a bowl on my steps with pre-packed small bags and a take 1 sign while I take the kids and make sure they are able to do it safely.2 -

We used to get a lot of kids, then the churches and schools started having parties and Trunk and Treat events on Halloween so only a few of the nearby kids would stop in. I assume the church and school parties will not be held this year so we may actually get more kids.2 -

So now my poor father not only doesn't leave the house, he doesn't have pop to drink.
We assumed this was why my OH's caffeine-free Coke had disappeared - thanks for confirming

I bought bulk Biokleen concentrate probably 10+ years ago and it would be my luck to finally run out this winter the spray bottle conversation triggered the thought because my daughter actually dropped and cracked the one bottle we have (also 10+ years old!) sooooo $80 just spent on Amazon! But it will last us a LONG time.
Is it BioKleen you use around the toilet? I have 4 boys 10 & under, and even w replacing all the toilet seats and cleaning under all the hardware everything still smells. Ugh. I have some BioKleen spray and the stuff I throw in the laundry w sweaty soccer stuff (used to use it w cloth diaper wash), so maybe there’s hope.4 -
It’s what I bought to try! Replacing the toilet seat made a big difference already, thankfully! My oldest (13) has seriously corrosive urine... during his toddler/prek years we had a toilet that was just a couple years old completely break free from the floor because the bolts were so corroded (it was a new build so I know how old they were). The toilet seat was only 3 years old and all the exposed metal pieces (screws and mounts) were rusted and crumbling. Re: Halloween. Most local parents stopped going door to door years ago. Instead they go to the zoo, mall and nursing homes. I hope the latter will be off limits now.
About shortages, has anyone seen lite versions of margarine or is it a local shortage for my area?1 -

I didn't think I'd miss Fresca this much. None to be found in any form factor. Sprite Zero in bottles can be found from time to time. Not the same. But something.3

This gives me an idea. Many years back, one Halloween I dressed drab, dark clothes, combed my hair a little wild (teased a bit, over my face), and sat on the front stoop hunched over, rattling a heavy chain, and moaning. It was very effective. I had to dial it WAY back for younger kids so they would come up to me to get the candy. I could combine something like that with a bowl of candy six feet away from me, so I could have a socially distant interaction with the trick or treaters.7 -

If you have an Aldi in your market try their house brand diet soda "Summit". I think it tastes like Coke Zero. Honestly, I can't really tell the difference between Zero and Diet, so grains of salt might be in order.1 -

I read an article that said shortages of all kinds of groceries were more than twice as likely as this time last year. We haven’t been able to get unsalted butter or diet rite soda for my mom, and perplexingly they have been out of the exact cereal which is the only one my husband likes for months now. And klaussen’s kosher pickles.
At least now I understand what is up with the diet rite. She also drinks gold peak tea, which comes and goes.
re: Fresca. I hate Fresca worse than anything because my mom used to make me drink it when I was sick as a child. I have no idea what her reasoning was... I guess I didn’t drink enough water for her concerns, and she didn’t want me having stuff with caffeine? But even the sight of the label makes me feel sick today.3 -
Re: Halloween. I’m thinking we will set our Jack-o-lantern out at the end of the driveway with a tray of individual candy bags and a take one sign, and sit on the front porch and watch kids come and go. It’s more or less what we do anyway since our neighborhood is a little rough and parents won’t let their kids come up unless it’s very obvious the house is welcoming. (We live two doors down from a drug house.)7

It's Limited Edition when it does appear here but I did pick up a few cases whenever I spotted them.1 -
They just announced a testing center in my state was sending in the positive results but not the negative results. They didn't give the details.
I heard about something like that in FL, but I wasn't sure it was accurate. But I heard this from the Governor in the covid daily update and the head of the Dept of Health. Why do testing centers do this? What could possibly be their motivation? Or is it really just incompetence to be able to miss that many test results?1 -

They weren't missing test results is my understanding, just not reporting the number of negative tests to the state of Florida. It could quite possibly be they don't trust the government there.
Many docs and hospitals are reporting their numbers to the woman that managed the state dashboard that got fired when she was told to suppress the data. That same woman is now creating a dashboard for colleges and high schools, some of which are also trying to suppress Covid-19 spread.
Either way, Florida has been corrected. It's important to know how many people testing are negative as well to know prevalence in the community. There are also some scientists that have been saying that what you need to do is test the water treatment facilities. You can actually know, ahead of a widespread outbreak, where it is based on sewage testing, as gross as that sounds.7 -

Thanks to this thread just had the thought to restock on the one all-purpose cleaner we use on a daily basis. I bought bulk Biokleen concentrate probably 10+ years ago and it would be my luck to finally run out this winter the spray bottle conversation triggered the thought because my daughter actually dropped and cracked the one bottle we have (also 10+ years old!) sooooo $80 just spent on Amazon! But it will last us a LONG time.
Is it BioKleen you use around the toilet? I have 4 boys 10 & under, and even w replacing all the toilet seats and cleaning under all the hardware everything still smells. Ugh. I have some BioKleen spray and the stuff I throw in the laundry w sweaty soccer stuff (used to use it w cloth diaper wash), so maybe there’s hope.
Wow!! I've never see them deteriorate like that, but I know we don't all have good aim. 😗 So maybe there's need for early training that whatever spills or misses MUST be wiped up, before it gets to smell or corrode.4 -

During college I trained myself how sit vs stand. I was the only one in the apartment and soon found out the source of the stink so for over 40 years I have not stood to go to the restroom at home. Now that I live on a small non farming farm I have a lot of places to stand but I do have to watch which way the wind is blowing and the slope where I am standing.13 -

Evidently Europe is doing this. They also save water samples periodically, so they have the ability to go back in time for historical tests. Seems really smart.7 -

When I read the intiail post, i had a thought about whether a building cheaping out on less suitable bolts might be part of that. Dunno, but for sure, certain alloys have more/less resistance to particular forms of corrosion. Bolts are cheap, but builders use a lot of them.1 -

No doubt in my mind they likely cheaped out on materials! That house has been a big frustration from the beginning, and that was with us living next door, looking in on things every step of the way (caught several things before they were permanent... one big one being the back door was framed 6” over, which took up the wall space where the fridge was going. Not sure how that would have ended up had we not said something). I have trust issues with contractors now... so many things were skimped on.
We have renters in the house right now, found out recently when the 10 year old HVAC unit went out that it was, in fact, a 15 year old unit! They put a 5 year old unit in a new build! Hated that thing from Day 1, too. Loud and obnoxious.10
