It's Sunday and Hal scheduled a weird workout. I started with 4x 100m at prace pace, with 100m rest in between. Then a 10k run at 10k race pace, for a total of around 13.5k.
It was great, the second 100m was going up a reasonable hill. But then it was flat for a few km and I settled into a nice easy 5:35min/k pace. It was wonderful. At around 8k I hit another hill that went for about 0.5k, and I managed to keep my pace to around 6:15. It was HARD! I was so relieved to get to the top of that one. I ended with a 1km walk to cool down.
My overall pace was 6:10 min/k but the 10k portion was 5:48min/k. My pace has definitely improved over the last couple of weeks, or perhaps my confidence to go with those paces?? I feel confident atm in keeping that pace over 21k, especially on a flat course.
3 weeks today!
It's amazing how much faster a new watch helps you go!
😂
It keeps telling me I need more anaerobic workouts. That would do it!3 -
Hal told me to rest, but garmin said 10 min run with 5min warmup/cool down at a slow pace. So went out for a slow 5k. Well i thought I was slow, my heart rate thought I was slow - average of 132, mostly zone 2 or zone 3. Definitely an easy recovery run.
I think im enjoying the cooler weather. It really helps haha.5 -
A few more pictures from Pedernales Falls State Park and Enchanted Rock. We hiked 2 days at each of these parks. We covered almost all of the trails in part or completely at Enchanted Rock but barely scratched the surface of Pedernales. It's such a big park! We'll definitely be going back again. In total, we hiked a little over 33 miles this week. And it got easier as the week went. I think we can officially say we are a hiking family!

I read through 100+ posts today to get caught back up. So many races these last couple of days!! Great job everyone.
Welcome/welcome back to those who joined this week.
I'll be back to running tomorrow!6 -
I just saw this picture my husband posted of me and my daughter at Enchanted Rock. She's 12 and juuust about to catch up to me in height. It's crazy to me that she's like small adult sized now!

@Teresa502 bleachers for 2 miles is some serious dedication. Yikes
@scott6255 great under2! That’s my goal. Under 2 before 38.
@WhatMeRunning yeah. It’s funny how our brains work. I keep thinking to yesterday “what if it were a more usual race with fuel stations and bathrooms? What if I hadn’t had to spot to fill a water bottle (or carry water at all!!!) or hop off course to go find a bathroom? My goal is under 2 but I’m happy.5 -
@katharmonic great race report and way to hang in there when things are tough!
Congrats to @pfeiferlindsey and @MissAtomicBomb238 on your races!
I've enjoyed the pictures, @martaindale!
I'm finally catching up here. Yesterday morning I drove to a nearby (35 minutes away) town for a canceled race that had been converted to a trash pickup challenge.
Recap in spoilerI had the route in my watch and when I found the start (right outside a buffalo zoo), there was no one around but a single car with the race organizer, who had garbage bags and gloves on a picnic table under a pavilion. He said I was the first person to show up. So I took a bag and some gloves, he took a picture, and I headed out on the 20k course. There was a covering of snow on the ground, which made it hard to see any trash, but it was kind of melting and at some point I started seeing things to pick up. The course was great, basically cross-country style with wooded trails, a little bit of road, across fields, dirt access roads around a lake, etc. It was scenic and super flat - nothing that I'd consider a "hill" at all. It was muddy in some spots, but not bad - there's definitely potential for a mud fest in multiple places. They apparently do this race 4 times a year, one for each season. This was supposed to be Spring, so they have a while to reschedule. I'm already registered for that but definitely plan to sign up for future races too (and got a 25% discount for the next one for participating today). My only issue was... the trash bag. Ugggh. The further I went, the fuller it got, and heavier, and bulkier and by the end I was so tired of running with it and switching hands, etc, that I was counting down until I could put it down and never pick it up again. It will be interesting to see what I can do time-wise on the course in a real race. Only question is: how long will it be before I bump up to the 30k option?
Pictures
I actually wrote and asked the organizer to send that "finish" photo with the trash bag because I knew he took one... and of course Messenger cut the quality so bad you can't actually see me, oh well. Maybe if you squint and use your imagination.
They said I was the first finisher on the 20k course, so I "won" - early bird gets a head start, I guess! My prize was same as everyone else - alcohol-free beer.
And that's my 40k for the week!

Great job on the 6 + miles @pfeiferlindsey !
@WhatMeRunning Hahaha. She might indeed need some backup.

Just 5k on the railroad access road. Saw some pretty hawks, beautiful day for running.
@katharmonic way to tough it out! I hope you feel great for your hiking trip.
I’m behind on reading, hope to catch up later.4 -
@martaindale Great pictures. So glad you had a great week of hiking with the family! Love the picture of you and your 12 year old. One of my granddaughter's just turned 12 and it is hard to imagine her being "adult-like" already.
@polskagirl01 Great job on your 20K trash pick up, non-race. 1st place is awesome! That looks like a great place for an actual race.

March total: 50.30/62 miles
It was a nice day here: sunny, a little breezy at times, and 63°F when I started out at 3:40pm. I had some things I needed to do after the run, including visiting a neighbor, so I decided I would stop as soon as I could after 30 minutes to get a good round number. I was surprised when at exactly 30 min I was at the 2.5 mile mark. SCORE. I did a little back tracking so that, I hoped, I would get the 0.6 mile done before I got to the huge hill going to my neighbor's. I was sooo close. I'm going to call that a win too. Then I strolled to the neighbor's for a visit and strolled home afterwards.
The run itself was a bit of a struggle. My knees felt weird every time I switched from walking to running. Tight on the sides is the only way I can describe it. They would loosen up fairly quickly, but I felt like I was struggling to run very far before I needed a walk break. I was surprised to see that I had managed 12:00 min/mile. As you can tell from my summary, that is the fastest this month.
Then, when I finished the 0.6 mile cool down walk, Garmin said I had walked a 4.4 mph pace. I thought it must have not had a good satellite connection and got the distance wrong. When I got home, I put the route into MapMyRun and it measured the same! I've never walked that fast before either.8 -

I ran 9.4 miles today. It was a beautiful spring morning. I debated about what to wear. When I was getting ready to go it was 53°F feels like 48°, but I knew it would be 60° or more by the end of the run. So I wore shorts and a sleeveless t-shirt and just put my sleeves in my pockets in case it was too chilly starting out. I never did put them on, but a few weeks ago I was under dressed so I wanted to be prepared. It was really nice. It was a little windier than I like, but other than that it was perfect. And this time of year is just going to be windy. It was an uneventful run, but it was just so nice to be out there on a beautiful spring morning.

Great job to everyone who had races or long runs this weekend!
Saturday, I had my RIPPED class, and then my friends and I participated in another of those live Clue-type murder mystery games. We walked about 3.5 miles around downtown during the game.
Yesterday, I ran 3 miles but spent much of the rest of the day studying for a certification I’m trying to get and helping hubby with a few things.
Hoping to pick up the miles some this week.4 -

Felt like I was wearing my concrete shoes and running through quicksand this morning. Lots of stars in the sky when I started out at 6:00 am but still pretty dark, windy and 37F. I took my parents for their second COVID vaccination yesterday which brings a lot of relief to me. They have been so careful, staying home as much as possible for the last year and it’s taken a toll on them. I’ve also been so worried that I would unknowingly give it to them since I’ve been their shopper for the last year.
Love the hiking pictures @martaindale and you’re daughter is a mini you!
@polskagirl01 – that’s a great idea to have a trash pick-up race. I get so upset when I see all the litter beside our roads. What are people thinking? I picked up a couple of bags last week during my lunch walk and like you by the time I got back home with the loaded bags it was a struggle. Too bad the race director didn’t have a drop point along the route where runners could drop the garbage bag and someone could load them up. Good cross training workout for you and congrats on 1st place!
Maybe the wind helped your fast walk @quilteryoyo! Either way fantastic!
Nice run @kgirlhart. I always forget about my sleeves until I read about you wearing yours!
Sounds like a fun murder mystery game @marisap2010. Good luck with your certification.

Short run this morning because I woke up an hour late. First mile was hell, even worse than normal first miles. But felt better at mile 3. Wore the 'bad' shoes, but feet felt fine. Think I will just wear these for short runs.
I go for my first covid shot tomorrow. I've read where the first dose can cause more side-effects if you had covid. But I tested positive just about a year ago, so hopefully it won't be much of a problem.
@Teresa502 Ugh, I hear you and empathize with you. That describes my run this morning perfectly. Oh and happy birthday. I missed that subtle hint in your previous post!
@martaindale your hiking pictures are so nice! Looks like you and your family had a great time.
@polskagirl01 great job on the trash pick up. I too will never understand why people think just tossing trash on the road makes any sense at all. Drives me crazy!
@marisap2010. Good luck with your certification test!

I see everyone running this morning and yesterday, like @scott6255 and @marisap2010 and @kgirlhart and all I can think is ouchhhhh.
How much time do y’all take off after a race? I feel pretty stagnant but I’m trying to avoid injury as I have a half marathon at the end of May.4 -
Ugh. I truly dislike my internet. It is so spotty. Had a whole post typed up and got some weird timed out error, so had to reload the page and lost my post. I could get so much more done if I had a better internet connection. Anywho, I'll try to recreate.
@kgirlhart Glad you enjoyed your run. It's always hard to know what to wear this time of year and the wind can be a bugger.
@marisap2010 Sounds like you had a great weekend. Good luck with your certifications and runs this week.
@Teresa502 Sorry your run was so hard. Great job hanging in there and getting it done. I'm glad your parents have both vaccinations now. I know that is a relief. It's been a hard year on everyone, but especially the elderly.
@Scott6255 I guess today is one of those days where gravity is stronger than normal, making your and @Teresa502's legs heavier than normal. Glad you felt better by mile 3. I have heard the same thing about the CoVID vaccines. Mom and I had it in Dec and got our first shots last week. All either of us experienced was a sore arm. I'm hoping that means our second one will be a piece of cake. I hope you have the same experience.

Sunny and mid 40s F, with a breeze from the south. Snuck out in shorts and a short sleeved tech shirt. Was fine during the second half of the run.
@polskagirl01 Finishing first is an automatic win!!
@quilteryoyo Now you walk faster than I run.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)3 -

My legs forgot what running felt like. I had a shorter run today with 2 miles of intervals at 5k pace and 0.75 mile of warmup and cool down on either end. Usually by 0.5 mile I’m good to go but it took every bit of my warm-up today and it was still work to get up to speed. But, I ran the intervals a hair faster than I thought I would and ultimately had a good run. After over a week in the arid hill country, the humidity really hit hard today but at least it was cool.
