How much time do y’all take off after a race? I feel pretty stagnant but I’m trying to avoid injury as I have a half marathon at the end of May.
As a rule of thumb, I usually take 1 day for every 2 miles (I think...it's been so long since I have raced). But everybody is different. I remember @PastorVincent always running the very next day with no problem.3 -
My goal for this week is 44 miles. I'd like to make it an even 45 because thats a better number. 30 of the miles will be Saturday. Trying to be excited and not nervous about this Yeti Challenge9

I tried running the day after my half, just a short slow 3km or so. It wasn't pretty but I think it helped. I was back to normal running on the Wednesday (race was Sunday)3 -
Boring day here.
Cross training day and I tried changing things up a bit, bike then yoga this morning. I also included a core workout cause I think my hip issue might be lack of core muscles. So going to concentrate on them for a few weeks. The hip issue is aches in the front and sides of my hips when I run at race pace or over 16k. It's not bad, more annoying.
Then I spend the whole day in angiography. I'm not a fan of angio. In the morning we do Cardiacs - looking at the blood vessels around the heart. I basically sit doing nothing all morning babysitting the machine. Sigh.
Then the afternoon we get more interesting cases like looking at blood vessels in the legs or abdomen etc. And while more interesting to look at, it's standing around all afternoon babysitting the machine.
Sigh5 -

I always try to run or walk within a day or two after. Otherwise I will take way longer than needed.3 -
3/17 - 1.67 mile easy effort
3/18 - .98 mile steady state effort
3/19 - 1.66 mile easy effort
3/22 - 1.67 mile easy effort
Really looking forward to another week!
@MissAtomicBomb238 - Like @Avidkeo and @RunsOnEspresso have experienced, there is some real benefit to active recovery the day after a really tough workout/event. Keep your HR in your recovery zone, and go by feel to make sure you don't overstress anything. You will still need the full recovery time but you'll feel better during that recovery. It's also how a lot of PT for injuries are handled. Instead of resting the injury, it is lightly conditioned back to health.4 -

My coach gives me a day off after a half (however, events are usually Sundays and Mondays are my day off anyway) otherwise a slow recovery run is always a good idea. There's no real need to take huge amounts of rest following a half, unless you've injured yourself/picked up a niggle or are feeling particularly beat up.
I'm always surprised how fast I run the week following an event so I usually enjoy running, although I will admit the first few kilometres can be tough/slow on tired legs.4 -

I only walked one mile today because I needed to get the lawn and equipment ready for the first mowing of the season. I got rid of the limbs that winter had deposited into the lawn. There were a lot. @Tramboman There may have been a Gator spotted today - helping to pull down a couple of limbs that were hanging over the driveway from the Nessie tree that fell last week.I got all the equipment ready and made sure it worked. I had planned to stop there and do the actual mowing tomorrow. But, it was a nice day, I was feeling good, and you never know what tomorrow will bring. So, I wound up doing all the mowing and weed eating today too. All of the yard work, according to Garmin, took me 3:07:30 and I walked 3.8 miles in doing so. I actually forgot to turn the Garmin on while I did the weed eating, so it was a little bit more than that.
The "tree" that is leaning over the driveway is actually a limb from the Nessie tree stuck in the ground. It had to go, as did the one above it.
I still feel good, but am tired tonight and I have a muscle in my back that isn't happy. I'm going to sit on the heating pad for a while before going to bed. I am really glad to have my lawn work behind me for this week.
Esther's, the dog's, family came home last night. Ashely's mom isn't doing very good, but with 2 kids who can't be in the hospital and no one to watch them, she felt she had no choice but to come home. I won't have doggie care responsibilities this week, but may next weekend, if she goes back down there to see her. Mom and I did visit them today, just to see how everyone was doing and get the above information. Two of the puppies were so cute, I couldn't resist taking their picture to share.
Could be the poster puppy for "ROTFL."
Too cute the way she was laying on her back to sleep.6 -
Congrats @pfeiferlindsey on your 5k! Excellent job!
And @MissAtomicBomb238 great job on your HM!!! Including a potty stop that's an amazing time. Fantastic! I usually take a day or two off for a HM and sometimes up to a week. Last year though I ran 365 days and although I didn't race a HM, I did run the distance a couple of times and didn't take any time off after. But I kept it short and very easy for a few days. This time is a bit different because I'm still trying to recover from my back issues so I didn't run yesterday or today. But I did walk every day for 3-5 miles.
@scott6255 congrats on your time, that's so great.
Love all your hiking @martaindale. And I always think that if I take time off - I forgot how to run! I thought that during my HM on Saturday for sure.
@RunsOnEspresso good luck with your Yeti challenge this weekend. You'll do great.
@quilteryoyo you've been busy! Take it easy and enjoy the heating pad and some rest. Those puppies are too cute. I really want to snuggle one.

Thank you all so much for the kudos for my HM. I have been trying to recover as well as possible. My back was a bit sore today from sitting too much I think, but it feels better after doing my exercises and using some heat. I also went to strength training and did some more upper body work. I go back to PT tomorrow morning.
I may run tomorrow, time permitting, because it's supposed to be really nice out. But work is a little busy and I still plan to hike this weekend so need to get stuff done.4 -
I ran a little over 2 miles last night and then did some an work. I am pretty frustrated with myself because I weighed yesterday and have put back on about 12 lbs since the holidays. I need to refocus so that it doesn’t go up any more.5

It really depends. If it's an "A" race that I am running for time, I take several days off and allow myself to run what I want, when I want for the week following. If I'm running it for fun, maybe a day or two? I've ran the day after a half, it's not too bad.2 -

3/2 - 4 early morning miles that felt really awesome
Total for March - 4 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 66 miles
I have to say, even though I don't respond a lot, I do read and you all are such a positive, upbeat bunch and I love it. I love the motivation. I did the challenges 2 years ago, but then "The Year That Will Be Forgotten" happened.
So:
March 3 - 3.11 miles
March 4 - 3.11 miles
March 5 - Today will be some spin and strength
Total for March - 10.22 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 59.78 miles
My huge goal this year is to get my base back that I lost last year. Before 2020, I was averaging 1000+ mile years and last year, I barely got to 600. So, my base is shot.
I ran 5 miles today without walking and felt totally amazing the entire time. Super happy with how it went and I have no doubt that I'll get to my goals this year. March goal is to get up to 6 miles comfortably and I'm sure I can do it.
March 6 - 5 miles
Total for March - 15.22 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 54.78 miles
Donated blood on Saturday morning, so I kind of expected my Sunday run to be a bit rough. Ended up being a beautiful day and I was actually 20 seconds faster per mile than what I normally run. Perhaps the slight weight loss helped .
March 7 - 3.19 miles
March 8 - Spinning after work - No running today
Total for March - 18.41 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 51.59 miles
Well...it caught up to me. Today's run with rough, but I got through it. Was a beautiful morning and considering I almost didn't get out there, I'll take it as a win.
March 9 - 4.5 miles
Total for March - 22.91 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 47.09 miles
Get busy for one day and you miss so much!
I'll have my first in person race in over a year (it will be 444 days to be exact) on March 20 and I'm excited but nervous. Just trying to focus on what I can control. I signed up for the last start time, so hopefully won't be a busy course.
March 10 - 3.12 miles of speed work
March 12 - 3.11 miles - Just a good ol' 5K to start the day
Total for March - 29.14 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 40.86 miles
Quick update for the weekend...
March 13 - 5.57 miles
March 14 - 3.26 miles
Total for March - 37.97 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 32.03 miles
So I am adding a small weekly goal for this week...I'd like to run a total of 20 miles. I think I can do it.
March 15 - Spin and weights
March 16 - 3.11 miles and weights
Total for March - 41.08 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 28.92 miles
Miles for the week (March 15-March 21) - 3.11 miles with 16.89 miles to go
Leg work last night and speed work this morning = sore me....eeek.
March 17 - 4.07 miles
Total for March - 45.15 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 24.85 miles
Miles for the week (March 15-March 21) - 7.18 miles with 12.82 miles to go
First in person race in 444 days is tomorrow. Nervous, but excited to have this tiny bit of normal back in my life.
March 19 - 5.25 miles to start the day.
Total for March - 50.40 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to Go - 19.60 miles
Miles for the week (March 15 - 21) - 12.43 miles with 7.57 miles to go
Today's 5K went so well! So much better than I anticipated.
Fairly small and they started people in 15 minute waves from 7 AM - 9 AM. Everyone was great with distancing and it was nice to get a small piece of normal back in my life.
March 20 - 3.11 miles
Total for March - 53.51 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to Go - 16.49 miles
Miles for the week (March 15 - March 21) - 15.54 miles with 4.46 miles to go.
Easy long run today - Finally over 6 miles for the first time in over a year.
March 21 - 6.51 miles
Total for March - 60.02 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 9.98 miles
Miles for the week (March 15 - March 21) - 22.05 miles - Goal was 20 miles, so goal met!
A really nice run this morning to start the day. I took one of my more challenging routes that just seems to be all uphill after mile 3.
March 23 - 5.26 miles
Total for March - 65.28 miles
Goal for March - 70 miles
Miles to go - 4.72 miles
Mileage goal for the week-(March 22 - March 28) - 25 miles - 19.74 miles to go5 -
@katharmonic Puppy cuddles are the best. It's great that your back is doing so good after the HM! Enjoy your hike this weekend.
@marisap2010 Nice work on the run. I know weight gain is frustrating. Just focus. Stop the gain, and then worry about loosing it, if that is what you want to do.
@pfeiferlindsey Great job on your uphill run! I tend to do a lot of walking when I hit hills.2 -

Sun peeking through high cirrus clouds and mid 40s F today, with a breeze from the east. Saw my first mower on the golf course, so spring must really be here.
@quilteryoyo I wish I had your energy!!!!
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)5 -

3/18 - .98 mile steady state effort
3/19 - 1.66 mile easy effort

3/23 - 1.73 mile easy effort
WooHoo! I went 0.06 miles farther in 30 minutes at the same effort today! Probably the lower air pressure outside.
@quilteryoyo - I learned this morning that today is National Puppy Day. I thought you might find that interesting, or a good excuse to go see the puppies.

I need to stop stalking Saturday's weather. So far it has went from a high of 75 to 81 to 76. I'd really like the high to remain in the 70s. I'm not heat trained yet! STOP SUMMER! LOL8
-
@runs_on_espresso oh no! Hopefully it drops down again by then. Getting so excited for you!
Well damn, last night while flossing one of my back teeth broke. I've just spent over $1000 at the dentist in the last month due to needing 5 fillings, how did this tooth fall through the gap!
So hopefully I'll get an appointment today though I'm not confident. Atm it's not too painful but definitely achy. I think this time I'll just get it pulled.
With that, I went for a 5k run this morning. It was lovely and cool. 7c here (44f), perfect running weather. Just an easy run. My last race pace run is Friday, 8k at my intended pace. Should be good!5 -
@Avidkeo oh no on the tooth. That's frustrating. And I can relate to the lots-of-dental-work-just-to-have-it-pulled frustrations as well, as that happened to me last year. I hope you can get an appointment quickly.
I went for a short bike ride this morning, then running club tonight. None of the other girls showed up, so I did my own thing on the track (which is apparently not closed with the newest restrictions - I wasn't sure if it was in the "sports facility" category [closed] or "soccer field/tennis court" category [open]). Then I jumped into a selfie with the guys from the club and left. My quad is acting up again... gonna get back to the exercises/stretches/rolling/etc... sigh. I'm itching for a nice, long run.6
