Wasn’t going to run today because I was in a car wreck (details are in the nutrition support thread if you’re interested) and my knee got banged up, but decided to go out for a short one anyway because I ended up with a free hour. Midday and it was stinking hot, plus we were exploring a new place so we did a bunch of walking. Turns out the “Collierville Greenway” seems to be about a mile and a half behind the grade school alongside a drainage ditch. That doesn’t sound all that grand but it’s actually pretty nice back there, lots of flowering trees. Doing it and doubling back we ended up with 5k and change. My knee is better than expected, it’s the knee with the Baker’s cyst and it’s a little spongy but not painful. Husband’s elbow still swollen but moves in all directions and he doesn’t want to spend the day at the doctor so I guess it’s his call.
Glad both of you are functional.0 -
So super stoked with my run today. I had to do three 2km repeats at tempo (close to race) pace with five minute tests between. Zero pain from my ankle - no niggles, no twinges, nothing! So much more speed, so much more bounce than I’ve had in weeks. Fabulous run.8

@Teresa502 - When it's 60F in TN but mid 80's in IL, something is very wrong. I'm jealous.
@skippygirlsmom - Haven't been following his story. Burrito-gate pretty much filled my Twitter. But if I were his parents I'd be ecstatic. Talent like that guarantees a full-ride at any school in the nation.
You live in AL? I once ACCIDENTIALLY drove to Birmingham from Chicago on my way to Atlanta. Doh!! Talk about distracted driving. (audiobook) My only other time being in AL was attending a Georgia/Auburn game where we got murdered. Alabama... NOT fond memories
@WhatMeRunning - Prob. good call sitting out the bad weather. I received a Tornado Warning alert in the middle of last Sunday's run. Kinda freaked me out. We don't normally get alerts in the city. Oh, and a spur of the moment HM? Crazy but much respect. I say go for it!
@Quilteryoyo - You're able to run hill repeats on your driveway? That's super convenient! I think there's one hill in this entire state. ONE! Ha. And thx for all the advice. I know I need to take things slow and not stress about performance. Just can't wait to get back into HM shape... then, dare I dream?
@kgirlhartkgirl - Ugh! I dread the heat too!! It just sucks energy out of ya. Luckily with my extreme low mileage running, I can deal far easier than runners like you who regularly put in double digits. Fall can't come to soon.
@Avidkeo - I think I watched that video too! Was it a U.K. girl from The Running Channel? Super entertaining vid, and also a pretty great feature advertisement for Garmin's new Forerunner 55... though I believe Training Load & Garmin Coach is avail on several models. I really want a new watch myself. Still rocking an ancient 305 that still works well... well until this morning. Under extremely heavy cloud cover it shorted my run by nearly a mile. Had to manually measure my run via Google to get my actual distance. Would really love to get a FR 745, but I just spent an obscene amt on a NAS.
@Scott6255 - Dear God man, do not tempt me w/ new shoe suggestions!!!!! Every time I hear about a new shoe, I'm like "Gimme, Gimme!!" I have this delusion new shoes will turn me into Kipchoge. Alas, I doubt even a carbon plated, jumbo stack-height, "super" shoe would have much of an impact. But oh boy, the Hoka One One Mach 4 has been calling my name.
@penguinmama87 - BIG CONGRATS on reaching goal! Now 60 miles for July?
@Tramboman - Looking at your training log, dude you've go this no prob. As for getting down to fighting weight, I know the struggle. I'm down 20 lbs since deciding to make an effort. Still have another 30-ish to go.
@rheddmobiler - So happy to hear you weren't injured. I've been in so many close calls, both auto & motorcycle related, I'm genuninely blessed to have never been serioulsy injured except for a broken collar bone (but that was on a track so crashing is expected).4 -
Yep @runsrunsruns it was that video. Given I'm now a month till I start my next HM build up, I'd do something a bit different! thats sad about the watch failing, though its one reason we love garmin, they keep going and going. I now have a fenix 6s and plan on keeping this one much longer than I had my other watchers. They were all about a year old when I upgraded. Never needed to, I just wanted new toys. This one was the battery life that got me, and no regrets1
-
Yeah for such a great, pain free run @ContraryMaryMary !
@runsrunsruns Yep. My driveway is 0.25 miles long with a couple of hills. The one is perfect for a 30 sec sprint. Now, when I do longer hill repeats, I'll have to use one on the main road. I can't imagine no hills. Being in E. TN that's all we got. Unless you are on a track, you aren't going to be running a flat course. You are doing so good, you'll be back to HM shape before you know it.

Low 70s F, a little breeze, and no rain on the radar. Saw on the latest email that participants get a "finisher" medal, so it looks like I'll medal again. Off to the races!!!!!10

Ugh, 5km before my 80km/month goal and I've been home with a cold and throat infection for two days now. Will be traveling from Monday. While I'm starting to feel better I won't be running there as I'll be hiking a lot. At least that's the plan. Sigh. Maybe next month.6

Mostly sunny, low 70s F, humid, and a strong breeze from the south. Set a pace goal for myself of 6:30 per k, and an overall time goal of under 32:00. It was one of those races where you don't feel great but you don't feel bad, either. Happy with my starting pace, but couldn't maintain it. Finished 53rd out of 84; chip time was 31:48; Garmin time was 31:59. Was 13th in the 40 and up males, so I looked at the times for 65 and up and I was second. I'm satisfied.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)

Way to go @Tramboman! 2nd in your age group is GREAT!

Pain free running.... you are living the dream @ContraryMaryMary!!
In the interest of fairness, I should point out that the 65 and up guy who beat me is 79 -- and he ran 29:41. Guess I still have more training to do.8 -
Great race @Tramboman! 2nd in your age group, regardless of who beat you, is awesome!! You also finished under your goal time! Thats a win too! I think as long as we keep moving consistently we've got improvements to make!
My fastest 5K time (29:27) was when I was 59 and had only been running a couple of years. I keep hoping I can get back to under 30 minutes. Have to be healthy and running consistently though to have any chance of it. I also haven't run many 5k (only 4) or 10k (only 2) races since I always concentrated on HMs (27)...5 -

Oh man, I hope I’m still running sub 30 5ks at almost 80, what a hardcore dude!
You did great, glad you had a good race! With real live people and everything! It gives me hope.6 -
Congrats @Tramboman! That is a great 5k time!2

Thanks, everyone!!!
Can't wait to see how tomorrow's recovery run goes.1 -
I can't keep up with this thread, it's fast!!!
Everyone is doing so well too!
5.6 mile run yesterday and 5.5 mile run today. I've now met my running goals for the month.

Woo hoo well done @Tramboman0
-
Way to go @tramboman! You made your time goal and had fantastic placement!0
-
I'm afraid to go back and look at how many 65+ male runners there were. For all I know, second may also have been last...0
-
@yirara Hope you get to feeling better soon.
@Tramboman ! Nice run! Hitting your goal time and 2nd in your age group is fantastic!
@sweetdaisy13 WTG on making your monthly goal already!
Today's HM plan called for an 8 mile, easy pace, run. I actually got up early to run before it got hot and got out the door at 7:20. It was only 63°F, sunny, 83% humidity. I was actually cool in the beginning. That didn't last.
This was a really, really tough run for me. I felt every one of the 18,000 or so steps. My legs just did NOT want to work today - tight calves and right quad. Stretching didn't really help. It was a real struggle to finish, but I'm glad I did. All things considered, my pace wasn't bad for me - overall it was 12:40 min/mile. Best mile was the last one at 12:06 min/mile. It's amazing what you can do when you just want it to be over. LOL9 -
Realized I haven't posted an update since I hurt my arm. Seems like I was just getting the hamstring under control but at least it has gotten some extra rest. I have been getting out and walking with little bits of running and this last week started doing 30/30 run/walk intervals. When my arm hurts I walk or stop and rest it. Surprisingly holding my are still has not really made anything else hurt so I guess it hasn't affected my gait too much. Today my hamstring started talking to me around 5 miles so I stopped and did some of the PT leg swings and that seemed to calm it down with no more complaints for the rest of the run. My legs were definitely tired but no pain per se. I am sure my arm will be aching tonight though. Hoping to hear from the ortho office on Monday. It has been a challenging frustrating couple of weeks trying to get through the medical/insurance process with referrals and unavailability of doctors.
I may make my 80 mile goal but definitely not my reach goal of the 100 mile club.

That's a great run @Tramboman! Second is amazing and it doesn't matter if there were only two of you.
I'm in my early 40s and in my Ultra Marathon a fortnight ago there was one competitor in his 60s and he beat me by 6 minutes with a time of 8 hours 2 minutes for 50k/31 miles!5 -
@shanaber Hope you get some answers soon. The red tape is so frustrating.

Happy to hear everything is in working order @Tramboman
Very nice long run @WhatMeRunning!
Nothing spectacular, but was hoping for a couple more miles. Right toe started getting a blister about mile 8 and it just kept hurting more and more so decided to just cut it after 13.2. It was miserably hot too, so I was fine with stopping. But hit my monthly goal, so I'm fine with that.
