So, do you all do the added calories due to exercise? I use a fitbit and when I get a certain number of steps, my calorie allowance goes up. I know it’s supposed to figured according to weight loss goals, but I’m wondering if that’s defeating the purpose for exercise (calorie deficit=weight loss). It sure is nice to feel rewarded for putting forth extra effort for exercise.

Just a quick check in-ladies group in a few. Got home from gym and ate quick dinner and checked in here.
Julie—I may be missing something-are you currently teaching or just working on thesis?
Dr. Katie-sorry to hear about your dad. Agree with others-take care of yourself. We are usually bad at giving ourselves grace.
Annie-parents are almost impossible to train. Good job sticking with your exercise plan.
Allie-hoping everything goes well tomorrow. Exciting times!
Rebecca-I am sure you are proud of your son. Very cool way to reenlist!
Heather-I find the idea of cinnamon buns for revenge appealing.
Regarding added calories due to exercise-for me it depends. I will eat many of them but only when I feel confident I have been logging correctly. When you have things set to lose weight, if logging is correct, you should be ok-you can check it out by seeing if you continue with weight loss while eating them back.
Off to see my group.
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio

I aim to eat back about half my exercise calories. Different people have different approaches, but you have to experiment to see what gives you the rate of weight loss you are happy with.

We are okay. We stocked up at the grocery store today and can stay comfortable at home. Thanks to heaven for the phone company and the internet, we can stay connected with family and friends. Stay as safe as you can.

I usually eat a portion of my exercise calories.
When I was on my big weight loss mission in 2015, I usually did this:
If I did light exercise like walking for an hour, I would eat about half my exercise calories.
If I did moderate exercise like cycling for 2 or 3 hours or running for an hour, I would eat about 3/4 of my exercise calories.
If I did a lot of exercise like cycling for 5 or 6 hours or running for a couple hours, I would eat pretty close to all my exercise calories.

We are home again from our holiday!Last Wednesday, we drove up north to a small town where we stayed 4 nights. It was lovely up there … so nice and hot (unlike Hobart) and such a great area for cycling, walking and running. And we did quite a bit of that. We would have done more cycling except for the heat (I didn’t want my husband cycling in hot conditions as overheating can be an epilepsy trigger) and the wind. It was quite windy during the day when I would go out to walk or run, and then would calm down about 5 or 6 pm and that’s when we’d go cycling.
Rhody seemed fairly comfortable there. He went around and sniffed the spots where he had rubbed before, like a corner of the wall he has rubbed against each time we’ve been there. I’m pretty sure he picks up a bit of his scent and of course adds to it. He was happy to be outside too and waited patiently for his possum friend to appear … and it did!
Then on Sunday we moved to cabin on a historic farm for 3 nights. I really like it there. No traffic, very few people, farm life.
We did our long ride on the Monday. I wasn’t sure we would be able to go that far, but we had no time limits or any pressure. It was a lovely day and we just rode. I did have that flat tyre right toward the end, but other than that, it was really good. I felt great after the ride … I think we were both a little tired, but we felt better than we had expected. However, in the night I seem to have strained something in my upper left back.
The next day we went for a short walk around the historic part of the farm rather than any sort of cycling. It's a World Heritage site and is set up a little bit like a museum depicting life in the 1800s. We also drove into the nearby town to do a little shopping at a Collective where Tasmanian artists and creators send their things to be sold. There is a nursery joined to the Collective area where we bought a pear tree last time we were there. This time, I bought a plant I had seen in the previous town. We also got some bee-related metal work.
Rhody isn’t keen on other people (besides us) although there are a few he will tolerate. He’s usually skittish around people and will either run away or growl. But animals seem to be different. He’s curious about them.
On the first night, a steer climbed over the fence into the back yard area of the cabins. Rhody was in the back yard on his leash and we were sitting on the back deck looking out over the fields. The steer walked along into our backyard area, eating grass as it went and not paying attention to Rhody or us. But Rhody saw it!! First he looked at this animal many times bigger than he is (but the same colour – black with a bit of brown) as though he had never seen anything like it before! And then he got into stalking position and started creeping up to it like he was a panther about to take down a wildebeest or something! Little tiny Rhody sneaking up on a large steer!
I hopped off the deck and stood beside Rhody. I thought maybe he would sit up and just watch the steer once I got there, but nope, he paid no attention to me and kept creeping up on the steer with not even the slightest movement of his tail. He was heading right for the steers flank and I got an image in my head of him pouncing on the steer, and the steer giving a kick and Rhody flying through the air … so I quickly grabbed him and we took him inside.
I was surprised! No growling, no skittishness like he displays around people … he was ready to have some beef for dinner!
The next night he touched noses with a little horse (like a Shetland). First he tried to stalk it, but my husband picked him up. He was interested in it and not quite sure. We also visited some sheep which he looked at with great amazement. Then when we walked back to the cabin, we saw a pademelon. My husband was carrying him on those occasions. Then he watched the pademelon for some time through the window.
Now we’re home and I think we’re all glad to be back even though it was a very nice time away. I don't go back to work till Monday so we've got some time to relax before then.
Oh ... and I lost a little weight over the holiday.

Hugs to all especially Heather, Ginny, and Kay.
I had eye appointment today. One year ago I was told I had cataracts beginning. Well, apparently they got bad quickly. When my night vision was tested I totally failed the left eye and was only about 30% good in right. Now the conundrum...I can get surgery on both in Feburary and it is scheduled, but I am going to the Charlotte speedway March 8th to drive the track in a gt500. Almost 3 weeks after second eye....oldest daughter and my DH think if they got this bad this fast I need to follow through with surgery. I would rather wait til Fall. I guess I will talk with eye dr more tomorrow. Experiences with cataract sugery?
Exercise calories... mfp already figures in a deficit, so they recommend eating the calories. I am more like Machka and eat more if the physical exertion is there. I rarely eat all of the extras though to allow for so so measuring and calorie counts. Logging is important as well as reaching yourself to listen to hunger cues.
I am exhausted and heading to sleep .
Machka Your getaway sounds wonderful!

Kylia - my mom went from mild cataracts to almost complete blindness in 6 weeks. She had the first one done, 2 weeks later the 2nd one, and had 20 20 vision in 2 days. she has not worn glasses since (6 months or so) and she had been wearing glasses since she was 7 years old.

Machka: I love reading about Rhody's adventures with you. It's wonderful that you have him leash trained and comfortable travelling. Do people stop and gawk at you walking a cat on a leash? When I walk Mars, total strangers stop their cars and talk to us. We have been walking him for 11 years now and the number one question I get is "How did you teach him?", and my answer is always "He trained me."
It's snowing and bitterly cold outside. A few hours ago the power went out for about 10 minutes. It elicited a ton of gratitude for electricity and heat. My personal energy level has been low, and I am sleeping in much, much later than normal for me. I take short walks outside, and use the recumbent bike inside, but just not with my usual verve. I find myself sitting alot more. I'm behind on housework, which is extremely unusual. Hope this is just a phase of winter blahs which will pass soon.
My trip to San Diego next Thursday hinges on my sister's Covid test. She visited her son for Christmas, he got C19, she quarantined at home, and tomorrow she will get results. 🙏🏽 Stay tuned.
Stay well, ladies. We can do this.

One of the places I like to walk/jog near home. Today is cool and wet, so I won't likely be going out there ...

Usually, he's on a leash staked in the yard so that he has a circle which he can explore. People have expressed a little bit of surprise at that because dogs are often in that situation, but rarely cats. He seems all right with it. He finds out what his limits are all the way around and then sets about exploring what's in his limits ... sniffing grass or bushes, pouncing on ants, flies, moths or whatever comes by, rolling in a dirt patch or whatever. In a new place, at least one of us will sit outside the first time or two so that he feels more comfortable. He'll come over and mrp at us and then go off and explore something else.
Somewhat less frequently, we'll hook up the walking leash and take him for a walk. We usually do it in quieter areas so he doesn't get alarmed. He's not keen on traffic or noisy people.
So for example, because I couldn't load the van when we headed home (weird upper back/shoulder issue), I took Rhody for a walk around our part of the farm while my husband loaded. Mostly I just let him walk wherever he wants to go so he started down one path and sniffed this and that along the side. Then he had enough of that, and went back, then started down another path but there were people at the end of the path so he didn't venture too far that way, so we went down a third path toward the sheep a little way. He didn't get too close to the sheep, but watched them from a distance for a while.
There are lots of stops and then sudden jogs forward and then slow walks and then stops and then another jog. If I don't want him to go somewhere (like if he wants to walk under a hedge or something where I can't go), I'll give him a little tug on his leash and tell him that I can't go there, and he'll trot off a different direction.
He seems quite comfortable with it.

I had cataract surgery about 5-6 yrs ago- mine, like yours, progressed very quickly. I had both done and have had no problems with them. The worst part was the iv(I HATE them). Both healed quickly
