In my big checkbook register from Amazon that stays on a shelf in my office, I write down every checking account transaction, most are debit purchases, but automatic deposits and bill payments as well, and keep it meticulously balanced to the penny. Meanwhile, I use YNAB to keep electronic running totals of all my accounts, including my two credit cards, with each transaction labeled by budget category. It’s overkill, but it works for me and I love it.
I need to be like you. I haven’t tried YNAB but did download it. I need to do that again and actually pay for it to use it.

On another note…. The new meds my doc put me on for depression/pain after one day use, seems to be helping! YAY I hope it continues. Pain less= better mood and less depression.

Debbie - So good to see Destiny smiling. Your parents live in a beautiful area near the ocean. When we first moved here to WA State in 1977, island and ocean front property wasn't desirable. We could have picked up a nice lot for very little, if we'd have had the money to spare and the desire to take a ferry every time we wanted to go there. This was before Microsoft and other tech companies made overnight millionaires.
It's going to be a warm sunny day, so mowing the front yard is on the agenda - hopefully after lunch. I have Nellybelle gassed up and ready for action as soon as the dew dries the grass. And dandelions.
Have a great week!

My grandparents bought that property way back when my mom was young. She will be 80 in two weeks. They built the first house. It burned down when I was in about 2nd grade. We went up every weekend to rebuild it. I love being there-sure hated the drive up and back-car sick every time.
As kids, my grandmother would take one of us girls up with us for a weekend. One at a time so great one on one time. No one lived there full time back then until grandpa retired and moved up there. He loved it and loved being alone. Grandma loved it but needed to be around people. We would go to the Navarro beach which was just a mile away or Little River which was further away but a safer beach to play on-no undertow. We would shop in Fort Bragg and Mendocino. We would go to church at the old one in Mendocino.
After both my grandparents died, the property went to my mom and her sister and brother's kids(my uncle passed away a month before my grandma did). Mom sold her share to one of my cousins. She was worried about liability if someone got hurt up there(other cousins doing stupid stuff). But, we can still go up when we want. We just talk to the care taker that lives there full time in the basement apartment that he fixed up really nice(wasn't anything but storage way back when we built it)
So many great memories there, including wedding night for first hubby and I. We had booked a hotel in Fort Bragg but by the time we got there it was closed and no one answered the door bell/night bell so we drove back to the cabin and "broke in". No one was there. Cold and damp but we got the fire going and great memories. Went to the hotel for the next night. Two days later, on the road, cross country in our little Toyota and uhaul trailer, moving me back to Mobile, AL.

Allie - I'm so glad they've found daycare for Miles and that there's an end in sight for you to get to be a grandma again instead of a daycare provider. Hope all the recent tests have come out good.
Heather - If I had to pack for all weathers, my closet would be empty! Glad the cruise company picks you up and doesn't have a weight allowance. Handy, that.
Rita - On the finances, I've learned that much like exercise, whatever you will keep up with and work with is the right one for you. Everyone's quite different in their comfort level. I hope the pain meds continue helping, and glad you've found something that does. It matters so much.
Thank you all for the hugs and thoughts and prayers. It is the age that staggers me, but I'm reminded that my first husband had a (non-fatal) heart attack at 47, with jaw pain as the only symptom. Bless him, my friend did not exactly treat his body like a temple. He loved life SO much and lived it at full speed, flat out. He was a force of nature, and will be missed by a lot of people. My sis and I had one of those laughing/crying phone calls this morning remembering him.
The weather can't make up its mind today, so I'm using the clothes dryer instead of putting towels on the line. It might rain in the next few minutes, or about 4 pm or 7 pm. The li'l weather weasels are all over the place today.
After the laundry, time to get the meds prepped for the week, and that will be the chores done.
Later,
Love,

Lisa,
I hope when I die some of my friends will have laughing/crying conversations about me. That’s the greatest honor I can imagine.

Lanette,
Marcella was actually pretty subdued, just getting over bronchitis. The months I spent in the ME’s office (1986-7) happened to coincide with the months that Patricia Cornwell was there, just before she wrote her first crime novel and became rich & famous. Who knew?

So far I have had one application and she wants $2 more an hour than the staff I have now that have been here several years. Also her track record is not that good, so will see who comes next. My main concern is I need someone who is going to stay. It is a lot of trainning and I need someone who plans to be here acouple years.
I have never been to the ocean, it is on my bucket list.
Evelyn -- Seeing Niagara Falls is also on my bucket list. Along with going to Canada.
Katla--Sounds like a very nice walk for you and DH. Glad you could do that togther.
Rita--Prayers and hugs.
Allie--Great news about the daycare.
Rita--I use the check registers to keep track. Works best for me as DH used ATM all the time. I also have a book I write down the bills each month and when they are due. That helps keep us both on track. About the only checks I write are for church. If we would give on line there is a charge and so the church wouldn't get the full amount.
Lisa--Sorry about your friend. So young.
Blessings, Vicki GRAND ISLAND, NE5 -
Don't do any budget balancing. I just keep an eye on the balances online so we don't go overdrawn. It's all automatic. No cheques for years. The only bills I pay are the cleaner and the window washer, and that is digital.. I know the dates when the pensions are coming in and more or less when big bills are going out. D H pays for the car, the TV licence, and all insurance. This month, the joint account is a squeak, but we will make it.
The great thing about going on a cruise is that everything is prepaid. Always come back to find some credit in the bank. No spending on Amazon, and food, meals out etc.
DH went to have his hair cut today. I asked him to look in the local big pharmacy for our favourite moisturiser. No luck. He called in at random in some cheap chain and found it! Two bottles. Hooray! More expensive than in the past, but we are happy. Why do they discontinue popular items? The last time it came up on Amazon there were 50 people looking. No good for us as it was a July delivery! We clearly aren't alone.
I just like the things I like. Why change? Grrrrr!
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx4 -

Quiet day here! I am about to do step aerobics... 5000 steps I hope! Walked with a friend this morning. We have a park near the river that is very nice. Tomorrow eve I go to a meditation group. I also clean the cat house tomorrow. This is a lot of work but is satisfying once it is clean. Thursday my son will come and hopefully we will sell the disability van. That would be a great relief!

It’s evening here. Our last Monday Painters meeting went well. Last week I found out that the girl who organises the teas for the group had just lost her husband. They weren’t long back from a holiday abroad. He had heart problems last year. She woke up one morning and found him dead in bed. The funeral was on Saturday and there was a service of remembrance today. I had the other group members sign a sympathy card for her today, and took it round to hers after the meeting. I was planning to put it through the door, but she and the family were just returning from the service when I got there, so I was able to deliver it in person. Very sad.
I’m planning to go to craft tomorrow morning.
I always keep a check on my finances. Don’t write many cheques these days, but always write payee/date/amount on the counterfoil. All our bills are paid automatically, and I mostly use my credit card for purchases. I’m not particularly spendy 😝 and we have a comfortable cushion for unexpected expenses. DH and I operate separate accounts, but all are joint, so that we don’t have a problem getting access. DH checks his frequently online, but I prefer not to do that for now. I check bank statements carefully, and often print out a running total if I’m near the bank, or at an ATM.
🤗 🤗 🤗 and 🙏 🙏 🙏 to all.

Worked, now making hard boiled eggs, will probably go in the pool in a bit. Update: it started to rain
Barbara – I did call the dentist’s office to ask if there was a reason they couldn’t take the crown off, move the pin, and put a new crown on. There might be a reason, I don’t know. Admitted, a root canal would be a permanent fix, but I wonder if this might save me from having a root canal. It’s not as painful today and it was Friday. I just want to know all my options. Right now I’m tending to lean towards a root canal if something is needed.
Rebecca – I’m glad your cat bite isn’t bad. When Loki accidentally bit Vince last year, he had to go to the ER for antibiotics.
Allie – I think of Penny quite often and wonder how she’s doing
Lanette – as weird as this may sound, I like mowing the grass. One thing is that the loudness of the lawn mower drowns out any other sounds so I’m left with just my thoughts
Shrinking drkatie – YEAAAAAA
Took a walk. The sun came out (finally!) but I don’t think I’ll have time to go in the pool today before ceramics.

Afternoon ladies
Busy afternoon, Tracy ,Miles and I went to Costco again got him a size up in diapers and a few other odds and ends he was a good boy in the car and in the store.
Kyle's dad and step mom live in N.C.in South port he is on Hospice and his older brother flew down today and Jesse and Kyle need to get down there pronto.
Beth - reason the Strawberries are so expensive at least our local ones is because we had a freeze in May that did them in.. so alot of them died off.
Heard back from the Dr ..have to wait a week for the auto immune bloodwork to come back.. hopefully there are answers there..7 -
Allie,
Miles is already turning from a toddler into a little lad!

Lisa ... very sorry to hear about the loss of a friend. 51 is too young.
Machka ... I prefer emails, but there is something special about receiving a letter.
Rita ... I think your point about the checkbook register was not so much about using checks, but keeping detailed records of what you're spending. My excel spreadsheet is set up to note everything we do and I color code lines and items. I do some convoluted machinations with the spreadsheet that aren't worth explaining ... but even purchases on the credit card are marked as individual debits on my spreadsheet so that when I go to pay the credit bill, the money is there to pay in full. It helps me to be very detailed now that we're on a fixed budget. I want to know where every penny goes and how many pennies are available.
My weed trimmer broke this weekend and the replacement part is not available. Did some searching online and found a youtube video that showed how you could swap out another brand's head with a few modifications. $20 is a lot less than a new trimmer! My husband plans to take care of it for me, but I think I could do it if I had to.
Slow and steady rain here today near Buffalo. We so need this rain. Can almost see things green up as it's coming down.
Husband and I went to find local strawberries and there were none! All of the u-pick sites we were familiar with no longer exist and the one market that carries local produce only had shipped in berries. What's up with that? I did see local rhubarb though and bought some to make a pie. Sticker shock at the register. A little over 2 pounds was over $11.00... 4.99 a pound! The pie was delicious and I froze enough for another. Next week we'll head over to one of the local farmer's markets.
Beth near Buffalo
Keeping track ...
I download the details from my bank now and then, and drop it into Excel.
There I can do groupings on expense categories like groceries, fuel, etc.
I go that route because I don't have the time or inclination to duplicate work. In other words, why write it down when it is all recorded for me! 😀

Going back to work today (on bus now) from a lovely 4-day weekend.
Lost a little bit more weight ... running and cycling might have helped.

Terri: My sympathy to your friend who just lost her husband.
Rebecca: I am sorry you have a cat bite. I am healing from a dog bite that did get infected. Keflex seems to be working to clear the infection.
Allie: My thoughts are with Kyle as he prepares to see his Dad in NC.
Pipcd: Congrats on raising the funds!
I heard today that if you pay your credit card off fully each month your credit score goes up. I had thought keeping a small balance and paying regularly on the balance would be better for your credit. I log each check I write but I don't keep a running tab. I write so few checks. I can pretty much keep track of the balance in my head.
Best,
Rosemarie from GA

Beth Strawberries just starting to come in at son's. The ones I pick I eat right when I pick them. Wonderful! I am having to water them because we are so dry here so worth it. Blueberry bushes survived winter. I won't get much this year. Next year will be the third year and that's when you start getting more. I am pleased a hydrangea I got at Target last year is blooming right now. I will share a picture soon.
So sorry to hear about the tour boat accident!4 -
It was SO crowded at ceramics tonight. I had Tigger on the table and dropped him. Broke. I’m sick over it, but I’ll just get another one. I had waited months for Jess to draw on him, and she finally did. Hope I don’t have to wait months for her to get to it again.
The plan for tomorrow is to do a body pump DVD after work.
We mainly write checks for our donation to the church. Oh, occasionally we need to write a check for something else (like paying the gal to take care of Loki while we go away)
Michele
who is going to see what ceramic she’s going to do next
4 -
Michele: So sorry about Tigger breaking. I hope you do get another one and go from there!
Margaret Turk: We went strawberry picking at a farm one year here in GA. We filled up our buckets rather quickly as I recall. Blueberries would probably take more time to fill a bucket. I have 2 hydrangeas I need to plant. One of them is named after Vince Dooley, a very famous football coach here in GA. Apparently he was really involved with the hydrangeas at the school where he coached football.
Machka: I am glad you enjoyed your 4 day weekend!
Dr. KatieBug: Congrats on the weight loss!
I have decided to stop being so lethargic around the house. From now on every hour on the hour until 8pm I am going to walk in the house or do a video for 15 minutes!
Best,

Rosemarie - keeping active is a good plan. They say all the walking does add up, even if it's only 10 minutes at a time.
Today I join you as a member of the "dog bite" club. Went over to my neighbor's to thank him for mowing under some of my trees, he'd left the gate open and their little Alaskan Eskimo made a beeline for my calf. Tore my sweats, tooth raked the skin and I'll have a bruise. Came right home and iced it for a little bit and smeared some antiobiotic ointment on it.
Luckily I had an appointment with Dr. Lisa set up for this coming Thursday for my achy knee, if it doesn't seem to be healing she can get me fixed up.
This is the second bite this dog has inflicted in the neighborhood. He bit my walking partner last year, and he was even out in the yard with the neighbor "under supervision." I doubt it weighs 30 lbs and he's a beautiful little guy but he needs to be watched 24/7.
The wife called me afterwards and profusely apologized. I would hate to be at their house tonight. We had to have a biter put down many years ago for attacking a neighbor. It was my DH's dog, a dobie, and I didn't hesitate calling animal control to come get him and euthanize him. We ended up paying some medical bills. We grow so attached to these animals but when they cross the line, hard decisions have to be made sometimes.

Good evening ladies!
Today I ate 1333 calories. A little extra chocolate. And I did twenty minutes on the bike, and an hour of yoga, and thirty minutes of aerobic walking. Yay! So my deficit was 245. Yay!
Sorry about all the dog and cat bites. Hope they heal quickly!
