When I exercise, I burn more!
If I do some light exercise, I don't usually eat those calories back.
If I do some moderate exercise, I will eat about half those calories back.
If I do some long and strenuous exercise, I will usually eat most of those calories back.
That seems to have worked for me.
Machka in Oz
I chose sedentary and I don't eat any of them back, regardless of how much exercise I get. I think there is sufficient wiggle room in the calorie counts on this site in the various foods that it is fine not to. That's just what works for me when I'm in loss mode. To each her own.

I will get around to the summer photos, but right now, I'm going through the autumn in Canada photos.

They're all beautiful scenes and great photos. Sometimes I really miss the fall colors. Some of our trees change, but it's not the same feeling when it's 75 degrees outside.

Heather-I am driven crazy by the holiday season in the U.S. People had decorations up outside before Thanksgiving. Christmas stuff is in the stores in October!
Kylia-I also hate the "stuff." We stopped buying gifts for each other or anyone else many years ago. We try to take a trip or have an experience (a special dinner, for instance) instead. We have far too much stuff as it is.
Annie-Thinking of you!
Svenja-Welcome to the group!
I did do something for myself yesterday. I went on a 5K run. I am trying to get back to 12+ miles a week. I enjoyed my long runs from years back. I did a 10K nearly every weekend. I don't know if I'll get back to that much distance in one go, but I'm aiming for 4 consistently.
They found the person who hit and killed my friend. Originally, it was reported she didn't realize she'd hit someone, yet she started driving a rental car right after he was hit. She is 76 years old, so unless she has dementia or is covering for someone, I don't believe her. She was arrested yesterday.
This weekend is a big event here in town. We have made a tradition out of going. It's in our big park in the middle of the city all decked out for the holidays. We go to the "international house" section and eat food from all over the world. Then we go to what we call the "international beer jail" and drink international beverages. It's a "jail" because it's fenced in. It's not a day for calorie counting, but it's our only tradition and I hope to walk to the park, which is about 6 miles/~10K. We often bike, but we are hyper-sensitive about getting hit by a car right now and this city is not bike-friendly.

Gina ~ What part of Kentucky are you near. When we were first married, my husband was stationed at Ft Knox and we sometimes went shopping at Louisville.
Tina ~ So sorry about your friend! I'm sorry that the lady who hit him did not stop and take responsibility for the accident. Now that I am going on 76, I worry about alertness and driving.
Silly Cooking Question: I follow the chat on What do Your Foods Look Like ~ Show me the pictures. I keep seeing photos of green beans that don't seem to have the ends trimmed off. I can't imagine eating them but maybe I'm wrong.

Hi, I am trying to become part of the group "Women Ages 50+ For December", but I am not quite sure yet, how and where to post and how to answer a post. At the moment I am experiencing and am happy for any kind of support.
My name ist Svenja, in my younger years I was reasonably fit and not overweight. Unfortunately both changed over the years, partly also due to illness. Now I am a happy grandma and want to get fit enough to play soccer, roll on the floor with the kids and be able to get up from the floor without help :-). Is anyone here in a similar situation? It would be great, if we could share success and failure and support each other. I want to be a "fitte Oma" (German for fit grandma). - Svenja
Welcome. I don’t have kids so therefore no grandkids. I’ve been on here for over 10 years now. I don’t need to be but I am just out of habit. All the ladies here can relate in one form or another. I don’t chit chat on here much so please don’t take offense. Just by posting you are part of the group. Keep coming back.
Yes you need to be here Pip, we are emotionally vested in your life now.💖🤗. You and Kirby are family you see, and that's just the way things are.😁. You are one of the many token inspirational gals that inspire us to be, fit and healthy. You might be retired, but that's your job title.😂

My friend G is coming over next Wednesday for us to go out to lunch. She has her eye on a smart place in town which does a very good value 'working lunch'. I'm OK with that, but I have very little cash. DH authorised me to take money from the joint account for my credit card bill today. I don't like it, but I'm grateful. He will put the money back.
I would be more than happy to entertain her chez moi, but she much prefers to go out. Just a thing with her to prove she's worth it. It will be fine. Unfortunately, one of our rail unions are still striking, although one has settled, so there are no trains. She will have to drive and get here early for us to catch the bus.
Happy to see her after her trip to Singapore.
My friends have grandchildren all over the world. Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Switzerland etc etc. They usually get to see them once a year. My friend B has said she doesn't want to travel again soon, so she is paying for her family of five to fly over from Australia next March! Her husband is 84. She is 75. They travel a lot to their house in Cyprus. It is very hard as we get into our 70s and 80s. Her son's children have a lot of problems with autism. They are having to move to Sydney from Cairns for better specialist schools.
One friend had a son in the Solomon Islands. That was an adventure! He and his family are now in Africa. They have loved their visits, but it is a major effort. Money is not a major consideration for my friends, but age is making choices harder. I admire G for flying out there alone on a regular basis.
I am soooooo grateful for the proximity of my grandchildren. Moving close by was the best thing we ever did.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx

After work went to CVS to get a prescription for Vince. The big-honcho from BK is supposed to be there today. First I was told between 9 and 12. Then I heard 9 and 5. Whatever, I’m not there. I was surprised that the store manager didn’t come at 9, but I guess she’s leaving things to the manager on duty. Personally, I wouldn’t be impressed, this is the manager who had a customer wait while she punched me out. But whatever…..
When I got to work I was surprised to see the front door open. They are supposed to be open at something like 5, but only (it seems) does the store manager have the doors open. I always thought they should be open. If I was a customer and the doors were supposed to be open but were locked, I sure wouldn’t like it. Plus...they are losing out on possible sales. The manager who was there today usually doesn’t have the doors open, but today she did. Probably because she knew that the BK biggie would be there and in case he came early, the doors were open.
Then walked down to Food Lion to get potato chips on sale. Will probably finish decorating the tree then want to start getting gifts in boxes ready to wrap.
Heather – congrats on the winning. Care to share????????
What I don’t like about Christmas – I really don’t like when people get me things they think I’d like. I would much rather get something that I really would like. That’s why I send out a Christmas list to Jess, Colby, Denise, Pete and Vince. Never fails that Denise and now Jess get me things they think I’d like. Many times I wind up donating most of these things after about a year of not using them.
Annie – whooshing big hugs and love to you
Svenja – welcome! What a lovely name! Are you maybe from Germany or German???
Tina – I agree with you about the Christmas decorations in the stores so early. I really wish we could have Thanksgiving more like the Canadians. There is so much between Halloween and Christmas that thanksgiving gets pushed out almost. Glad they found the person who hit and killed your friend. Those foods from all over sounds really interesting. Wish we had something like that
I try not to eat back my exercise calories. If I’m over by a bit, I figure I’m OK because I do have the exercise calories. I do find that if I don’t eat in the evening, I tend to lose. Only it’s not easy for me not to munch on something in the evening.
Rebecca – we have a big family here, don’t we??

When I was doing long bicycle rides (like the 200 km we just sent a group of rider on), I was burning about 4000 calories (100 calories for every 5 km) on top of my sedentary amount. That fit in the "long and strenuous" category. I discovered that if I only ate about half my calories back (an extra 2000 calories on top of my sedentary amount), I was absolutely ravenous, cranky and dizzy the next day. But if I ate, an extra 3000 calories on top of my sedentary amount, I still came in with a decent deficit, I felt all right, and I lost weight.
I found I had to juggle things a bit like that to make sure I was refuelling enough, but still had the deficit to lose the weight.

This is a thread in a forum, so all you need to do is to either:
a. Use the Quote feature to reply to someone (as I have done just now) or
b. Post a new reply at the bottom of the thread.
You'll get the hang of it!

In Tasmania ...
The Christmas decorations appeared in the stores in about mid-September.
We don't have Halloween or Thanksgiving ... well, there's a small attempt to do something on Halloween but it isn't popular. So the Christmas decorations appear early.
The city decorates in about mid-November when the Christmas parade is held. And that's when the trees in the lobby of our building, and several other buildings, appeared.
I decorate on December 1 or as close to it as possible. So our tree is up, but it is not decorated yet because I've been busy. I might do a bit tonight.
I have added a few events to our calendar. We won't go to all of them, but I like to have the option.
I love the Christmas music, so I'll be setting that up very soon.
I don't do cards, although I might send my parents one. If I want to hear how people are doing, I check their pages on Facebook.
I do very few gifts. I've got something ready for the raffle our beekeeping club holds. I've got several things for our granddaughter. I just ordered something for my husband and me last night. And I'll do my brother's gift card just before Christmas. That leaves my sister-in-law and someone, if there is a secret Santa at work.
My husband and I won't get gifts from family or friends ... we're adults and can get what we want.
Things I like about Christmas ...
- decorations
- lights
- music
- events
- some of the food
- the Christmas story
- time off work!

Svenja - You've joined just by posting, welcome to the December thread for Women Over 50+! You'll find lots of "fit grandmas," here along with those who are on their way to being fit, both with and without grandkids... There are women in the US, the UK and in Australia, as well. We're glad you're here, drop into any conversation that interests you, ask questions or add your own contribution.
Regarding checkbooks: I honestly can't remember the last time I balanced a checkbook. I know exactly what's going in and out and am the only one who makes deposits or payments, so I don't have someone else adding possible errors into the mix. I check my bank accounts daily or every other day, as often as I need to, and all payments are automated and paid by credit card except water (small town, not ready for that yet) and the new car payment.
Tina - It makes me so sad that a woman who is 76 years old left the scene of an accident. How old do you have to be to know that you stay, you call for help, and then you still stay. You. Don't. Leave. She not only destroyed your friend's life, she destroyed her own! So incredibly sad for everyone who loved him , and for her, too.
Exhausted, and coming down from getting behind the pain curve again. Pills are just beginning to cut in. Went with Corey to look for the work shirt jackets that are duck outside and soft inside, finally found what he wanted at JCPenney at the mall, and it was the fourth place we went. We had already gone to Home Depot to look at flooring and walls for the summer room and we got groceries at Walmart after we looked for the shirt jackets there. One too many places. It will pass, but I need to be still for an hour or two.
Hope it's a lovely weekend for all...
Love y'all,

Welcome Cyndi
Hop right in!!
Pip- we love you my friend..your not going anywhere..
Lordy we had a blast tonight lol
So Today is my friend Carolyns Birthday,Susans is in a few days and Trudys in on the 11th so I took them out for dinner and drinks
Well we ended up at the Choo Choo lounge which is at a swanky Inn down near the shore.but what we didn't know is it was closed for a private party.. we walked in the side emergency exit not knowing any better..so I go up to the bar to order our drinks ,and come to find out its an open bar.. and then the girls come around with appetizers, bacon wrapped scallops, baby lamb chops, canapes, goat cheese and brie we were chuckling away
Then the waitress adresses us and says we were invited into dinner
We scooted out of there quick and ended up at the Fresh Salt which is the restaurant there
Susan and Carolyn were lit,and it was hysterical.. me I was the designated driver..
We all got clam chowder and each of us split a salad.
And since it was the girls birthday i had them bring out a couple desserts and they put candles in them.
Then we drove home through one of there old hometowns to see the Christmas 🎄 lights..
What a hilarious fun night..7 -

Welcome. I used to use Spark People but found this discussion group a very satisfying place for support and encouragement. I read this thread every day and join in the discussions of subjects that interest me. I log food and exercise every day and seek every opportunity to be active. It works for me and it can work for you.

Allie - That sounds wonderful! Spending time with friends like that is so good for you!
I'm awake in the night and Bea is arriving at 7.30! It will all work out fine. She loves playing with my tablet, so it isn't all full on. I have found a Christmas card painting project on Instagram that she and I might like to do. And I've saved others. She loves to play card and board games with DH.
I'm a bit sad at missing 'The Archers', my usual Sunday morning ritual on the radio, but I'm sure we will gain more from her vibrant presence. Life certainly isn't boring when she is around.
On Monday John is thinking of going to the Paris House in the afternoon for a live music session. It's a quartet, in a pub. I will probably join him. He will walk down and I will get the bus. We learned about the afternoon session from the guy we met in the boutique brewery. In the winter, it's hard to drag ourselves out in the evening, so this might be fun. I find it's good to do things together, especially new things.

Cyndie – welcome. “The one thing I miss about SparkPeople is their recipes. I like the way on the front page it listed the calories. Never was on their forums, liked this one too much
Allie – sounds like a real fun night.
Well, we got the invite for the Newcomer winter social. Boy, have the prices gone up! It went from $30 to $40. You can choose between a meal of ribeye, chicken, salmon, or a vegetarian plate. They’re having a DJ. The cost for a guest has gone from $35 to $60 and this includes a membership. So they’re forcing a guest to become a member. I don’t think we’re going to go since it doesn’t look like anything special. Roaming servers with 3 different appetizers.. Why do I need someone to bring them to me. I’d rather get it myself so I can talk to different people. They’re going to have assigned seating. I want to sit with someone I know, not who they want me to sit with. Years ago it was a buffet. I would be interested in the chicken, salmon and maybe the vegetarian. But now I'm forced to have only one thing, can't try different things
Going to watch some TV while making one more towel topper, then going to work on the scarf for this gal at BK. She asked me how much and I just told her “a donation to a soup kitchen” Will it happen? Who knows? It’s not like it’s that big a deal if she doesn’t
Michele NC3 -
Ok … so interested in your opinions. I was gathering food off of my pantry shelves for a food pantry our church is donating to tomorrow. All of the food was good … none past expiration dates. I know this because I take a sharpie marker when I come home from the store and write the Best Buy date in large numbers that I can read quickly. Helps me use the oldest first and prevents waste. So many of the items I chose had this writing on them. My husband took a flip and refuses to donate these items as it’s “degrading” to the recipients? Huh? I’d be thrilled to know at a glance that the items are good. Am I wrong about this? Is writing on the cans/jars insulting? I was really surprised by my husband’s reaction.

Michelle,be like us and find a swanky restaurant and crash a wedding 😅4

Sue - I do watch Unsellable Houses they do a great job of getting the properties ready.
I think the giving tree is a great idea. I wonder if they have something similar around here.
Barbara - yay for the delivery! I’ll be waiting to see what you bake.
Machka - happy 1st day of summer!
We are being told to expect a brown Christmas this year. 😳
Annie - I’m sorry your sister has to fly back, will she be able to come again soon?
Valerie - I am originally from New Brunswick currently in Alberta. I did live in Scarborough for a couple of years too.
Welcome to the group.
Lisa - I am free for a couple hours this morning and am thinking of a nap. In the meantime, I’m watching Holiday Baking Championship and catching up with all of you.
I don’t bake, really have no interest, but I love watching the baking shows and seeing their creations.
Joy - if you attend yard sales there is quite often village pieces as well. I have gotten most of mine that way. I have the small little houses. Someday I would like the big ones but that would also require a bigger house.
Carol - I find nothing on tv either. Funnily enough though in order to save money on our tv and internet I signed a new two year contract yesterday to save money from what we’re currently paying. I would probably cut that in half if it was just me.
We watch It’s a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve every year. It was a tradition DH grew up with, his Father started it. I don’t know if we’ll watch it this year as DH is working, but also it might be too hard for him.
I just remembered I need to go to the bank to get some change for my float tomorrow, also should stop and grab a couple little things. Like Joy said it’s cold here this morning, our coldest yet, so I really don’t want to go out.
Rebecca - what a pleasant surprise from your sister.
I too eat back most of my calories when I’m actually tracking. I’m not sure what is going on right now but I seem to be losing without really doing anything except moving around the house more.
I started moving more to help with the pain in my back and hips. It’s affected my feet, but I’ve kept going.
Allie - I got Entertainer too! I need to read more but I was a bit shocked by that answer.
I know you enjoy the Hallmark movies too, if you haven’t already you should watch Letters to Santa, it’s not typical and I found it to be a good movie.
Rebecca - I love the jewelry key too. What a great idea.
Annie - the biggest hugs to you. You are walking a difficult path and doing it with grace.
Beth - your decorating sounds beautiful.
Michele - you and I are opposite, I hate making a list and love almost everything I get from my family and friends.
Beth - I think the writing would be fine. It’s not like it’s used.
Kaitlyn and Michaela came to visit and help decorate yesterday. Michaela ended up spending the night and Rodger drove her home this morning.
They are in charge of the village and the tree. I had so much fun listening to them create their scenes by the story they were telling.
These are pictures of the village.
When they were deciding which building would go where they realized they had two churches and Michaela thought they should both be on the same “street”. Kaitlyn was trying to get her to change her mind and asked if she was sure she wanted to do that. Kaitlyn pointed out the the ceramic church I painted was bigger. Michaela taps the smaller church and said “that’s ok, that’s where the poor people go”.
Kaitlyn and I had trouble controlling ourselves. She said it so matter of factly. We composed ourselves and had a serious discussion about how that was rude and not a nice thing to do.
Kaitlyn and I wondered where she got an idea like that in the first place. It certainly wouldn’t have come from anyone in the family. Our side or her Dad’s side.
Kaitlyn went to the craft show with me today, it was better than last weeks, but died off with customers around 1.
I’m very tired, I’m going to head to bed early.
