Hi all from the 3rd world country that is Houston. This morning marked 72 hours without power. The only shred of good news is that our area has changed from orange (meaning they are assessing, aka not actually working on us yet) to blue (meaning work has begun) on the outage map. I almost hate to hope that we could have power by tonight. Last night was really hot and I got very little sleep. Our flight is at 5 AM tomorrow morning so we are waking up at around 2 AM. I was really hoping to get a better night sleep last night. If the air conditioning were to come back on at least those few hours tonight would be quality.
Also our cell service and data seems to be back. It’s been very sketchy and that has made things harder to manage.
We cleaned out the fridge and freezer this morning and are working on getting the house back in order. Our cleaning lady will come while we’re gone so we can’t leave things a total wreck. Bonus, we come home to a clean house!9 -
Holy cow! @martaindale that's unreal that your power is STILL out!!!!!! I'm sure that makes living conditions awful, but you have to deal with getting ready to leave the country. I am so sorry you and your family have to go through that. But that being said, it is a great time to get away! Have a GREAT trip!5

01.07 3.0km 25min 8:20/km - 10x very short interval
04.07 5.7km 50min 8:49/km - run/walk
05.07 3.6km 30min 8:21/km - slow
07.07 4.1km 35min 8:29/km - slow
08.07 3.0km 26min 8:32/km - stride repeats
10.07 5.2km 45min 8:43/km - slow
total 24.58km
This went better today. I did 3x15 minutes with a target hr that went up by 10 each successive block. Walked when my hr went too high, and only had to walk briefly this time compared to last week. Things are getting better.
But yeah, it's official: I have a muscle condition. Not sure yet what, but it looks like a substantial part of my muscle fibers responsible for higher intensity things are rubbished. And as such moving around is a lot more difficult, and they hold a lot less glycogen for this. That explains why exercising is so difficult for me and i don't get better.10 -
Lake 3.02Miles (at 13"50 pace). Streak day 72.
It was foggy this morning, so not so hot. It's going on noon, and I'm still not 100% cool and refreshed. Perhaps that comes more easily with better fitness.5 -
Hi everyone!
After a tough workday, I headed to the gym for what I thought was a progression run. I increased my speed by .1km every km and the run was unsurprisingly increasingly harder. Right as I finished, I figured out I did the run “wrong “- just the last 10-15 minutes was supposed to be fast. So maybe next time it will be easier. We’ll see. In any case, I got it done , which felt great.
120.8/200km for July.5 -
@martaindale I’m so sorry to hear about your power outage. That sounds awful, especially right before I big trip! I hope you get a better night’s sleep tonight and have a good flight tomorrow and a great time in Japan!
@yirara I’m sorry to hear about your muscle condition!2 -

7/10: 6.52 miles
7/11: 6.02 miles
49.42/130 miles completed for July
I did not get up good this morning and got a bit of late start, but I did manage to get 6 miles in. It was about the same weather as yesterday. 75°F, 73% humidity and dew point 66°. It's not the greatest weather, but about as good as it gets in Texas in July. So I had another nice run. And since I got out later it was light the whole time too. I almost had negative splits. I was a little slower on mile 5 than on 3 and 4, but other than that they were all negative. And 5 was faster than 1. Overall, I was faster than yesterday, and I felt good about the run.
@martaindale I can't believe you are still without power. That has to be so stressful especially since you are trying to get ready for your trip. I do hope that y'all have a great time in Japan.
@tarun_yadavA Nice shoes!

I got in 5 miles this morning. Ran with a couple of friends for the first 3 and then did 2 more on my own. The weather was fantastic. My car read 63F and Garmin said it was 59F when we started at 5:00 am.
@martindale - I really hope your electricity comes back on this evening. Will your cleaning lady or someone be able to check on the house if you are gone when it comes back on? I always worry about things left "on."
Nice shoes @tarun_yadavA and what a busy bar!
@chris_in_cal - are you a converted morning runner now?
Great running everyone!4 -
Tough break @yirara, but it’s always good to know what’s going on. And well done on making progress!
Perhaps you’ll be able to sleep on the plane @martaindale - you’ll want all the energy you have for Japan. I’m so envious, I’m dying to go back - I’ve only had a three day work trip to Tokyo which was enough of a tease to make me want at least a couple of weeks there - even if it’s just to eat!
Ha @Laurz9191 - nothing quite like cocking up your programme to make you work harder. I’ll admit to doing that more than once!
Stunning frosty morning here - made for running (well, now it is as the sun’s up and the temperature is on the rise). Sadly no run today, but have tomorrow and Sunday booked in. They’re promising to be cold and clear too.

@Teresa502 My in-laws live on the street behind ours. They feed our cats when we’re gone and will probably get power back the same time we do. It’s much easier to leave town knowing they are right there and come to the house 3 times a day. I’m sure things are on. We were in the middle of our morning routine when the lights went out.
@Laurz9191 I’ve done things like that too and during the workout I’m thinking, omg this is soooo much harder than I thought it would be. When I figure out my mistake it makes me feel like I really accomplished something!
@ContraryMaryMary I am typically terrible at sleeping on planes but my husband and I were talking about how we both think we’ll pass out on the plane because it will finally be cool after no AC for 4 days in Houston in July.6 -
We went away for a few days for our anniversary and I was way behind. Forgot my laptop charger so had to really limit my time to have the battery last. I have gone back and read, liked and hugged where appropriate but I am not going to even try to comment on all that I might have wanted to.
I must say you all have been killing it running in the heat and humidity and @ContraryMaryMary going from heat and humidity to freezing cold rain! Also welcome to the new and returning runners just joining in here. Please jump into conversations and ask questions. There are lots of experienced voices here willing to share what they know.
On the early morning running question. When I was working I would get up early (for me - not a morning person) to run. If I didn't it wouldn't happen. I worked remotely so I didn't have to worry about getting into an office unless I was at a client site. I even sometimes listened on conference calls while I was out and prayed no one would ask me anything. Mostly I tried to schedule my early meetings around when I wanted to run and avoided those I didn't actually schedule. I even blocked time on my calendar so others would see me as unavailable. Note I am talking 5-6 or so in the morning as I am on the west coast and the company was mostly in Dallas with clients and staff all over the world.
@steviebee888 - it is strange that they dropped the HM option. Maybe it just wasn't getting the number of runners to make it worthwhile? I am glad I was able to run it while they still had it.
@martaindale - Have a wonderful trip to Japan and leave all the power worries behind you! I too love to have the housekeeper come while we are away and come home to a fresh, clean house.
@yirara - I hope there is something they can do for you to help those muscles perform the way they are meant to or at least improve a bit. it must be very frustrating not to be able to do what you know you should be able to do and not know why.
I had a multipart nuclear medicine test today (I am pretty sure I glow in the dark now 😁) that started early this morning, so no getting outside. I am planning to get back on my strength training routine though and may get a mile or so on the walking pad. I did walk while we were away. Once a slow shorter walk with my DH and another longer one the next day and there were hills steep enough to make my calves sore. We also did quite a bit of walking around town checking out the shops and galleries.

A few pictures from where we were - the foggy/marine layer never really went away which was nice and it was even drizzly one morning. There were lots of crazy people out on the beach though and in the water swimming and surfing even though the surf was rough and the rip currents bad. I did not take pictures of all the hills, just a couple, but I think I managed to hit most all of them both up and down.

@martaindale So sorry that you don't have power back on yet. The timing is horrible since your trip starts tomorrow. I hope you do get it back on before you leave. Good idea to charge devices at work. I'm also sorry that your kid is still not well. I hope the trip doesn't make his ears worse. I'm sure you asked the doctor about flying again and it's okay. I just hope it isn't painful for them. Enjoy your trip! I'm glad your in-laws live so close and can keep an eye on things and make sure everything is "off" that needs to be once the power does come back on,
Great use of your time to get in your run today @ContraryMaryMary .
Great running and love the shoe and food porn @tarun_yadavA . That's a huge sports bar. I don't think we have anything like that in the USA...not that I have ever seen.
@yirara Glad today's run went better. Sorry to hear your diagnosis. I'm sure it does help a little to know that there is something going on and there is reason things are the way they are. Is there anything they can do to make it better?
Sounds like you did great with the harder workout @Laurz9191 .
Nice running @kgirlhart !
The weather was great this morning @Teresa502 . Great running.
@shanaber Happy Anniversary. I'm glad you had a nice get away and was able to get in some walking with great views.

24.00/60.00 goal
I didn't report yesterdays exercise. I went to the gym before work, worked 5.5 hours, came home and walked a mile on the driveway before heading to visit with a friend before church.
Today, I got up early and went out for a driveway run before work. The temperature was actually a little cool at 62F (16.7C). I walked 0.35 miles and then ran/walked 0.3/0.15miles x 4, then walked to make 2.25 miles. I used segments to separate the runs and walks. The 0.3 mile run paces were 11:39, 11:31, 11:47, and 12:01. Avg pace was 11:44 min/mile. I'm happy with that since I was running fairly easily...not trying to run fast.
I worked for 6.5 hours, came home and got my tennis stuff and played doubles tennis . It was fun...a little more social than the normal Thursday night group, but it was okay. It was 86F (30C) to start, but didn't feel that bad.

@AmunahSki pathetic PRs?! Those are amazing. Truly a runner in the making with a disciplined approach. This is awesome stuff. 45 .minute 5K may not be impressive in terms of speed, but you're absolutely killing it with consistency, with the slow and steady discipline. Don't stop--rest obviously, so yes, stop running for a day if you need to or if your program calls for it--but keep up the disciplined work.
@martaindale if I could get on a treadmill or hop in a hamster wheel to generate some electricity for Houston, I'd do it. Hoping you get power back on and Centerpoint stops dilly dallying with their repairs.
I've been out for a bit, but I haven't stopped running--although I wish I did, since Z2 really depresses me each time I do it.
Sunday Long Run 8 miles
It felt okay. I ran consecutively except for the times I had stop at crosswalks. A Toyota almost ran me over as it was making a right turn. Shame it didn't. That felony money could've gone to the rabbits, I wouldn't have to do Zone 2 anymore, and one less reckless driver would be on the street (hopefully). I wanted to have fun at the end so I just booked it and left all my responsibilities behind.
Avg 127 BPM
Max (during Z2): 140 BPM
Max out of the the entire run: 177 BPM
Average 158 SPM
Tuesday 3 Mile Z2
Also felt pretty good. I made an effort to run slower during the times I felt I was going too fast for my HR. Not a bad one, but I got mad at how slow I was going and was mumbling to myself like an old man towards the end of the run.
Avg 121 BPM
Max 140 BPM
Average 156 SPM
Wednesday 6 Mile Z2
Felt the worst. I hated this run. I have never felt so discouraged to run. By the end of it, I was filled with such a hatred for running that I wanted to quit.
Avg 128 BPM
Max 141 BPM
Avg 163 SPM
Thursday Intervals
So much anxiety. I love intervals but today I felt very uneasy about them. Something about my injury history just gives me the hitters with these. I started off just by sprinting a 400m. I fell off hard towards the end and I'm glad I did. It helped get all the running jitters out.
Then I did my intervals (I honestly don't know what that word means in terms of running. I just kinda ran to my heart's content)
Best pace 5min/mile
Max 183 BPM
I have no idea what my heart rate was doing. To me this data looks too weird. I'm either a cardiac freak of nature--not in a good way--or Garmin HRM is all messed up.
Comparing this to the last time I did stride repeats a long time ago with the Garmin plan, I don't look like a cardiac freak of nature and my data actually makes sense.
Too weird for me to comment on. Hopefully, now that I have an HMO insurance, I'm hoping I can use this to get a referral to a bunch of other doctors for the sole purpose of milking my marathon training at the cost of greedy insurance companies.6 -
I got new shoes.
The 3.2km easy run last night was faster. Dunno if it was me or the shoes. Probably the shoes.
@shanaber Happy anniversary!
@Teresa502 I am so envious of your temperatures
@yirara Sorry to hear but a diagnosis is good? Is there anything they can do about it?8
