I still don't get why we call it a poverty bench.
I don't see that term being used with squats or deadlift really. Can someone explain that to me? My understanding is it's just a low number compared to your bigger pushes- but why did we start using it? and why do we mostly use it for bench?
I need someone to 'splain it to me.0 -

You have it right, and it really got started, from what I can tell, on bodybuilding.com which is the same reason that there isn't any logical behind it. They also use poverty for squats and deadlifts, not quite as often, but enough.0 -
Why is it used more for bench? Likely Ego. Bench is inordinately used as a judge of strength, and to some people a stick to judge others. It wouldn’t surprise me if it came from bodybuilding.com their forums aren’t the worst on lifting but a lot of Bro’s hang out there. I hear people ask how much you bench but never how much you squat or deadlift. As an aspiring power lifter I find it stupid. It’s the total that count and deadlift and squats mean far more to that total.
Vinny, *kitten* man your numbers are fricken awesome. I also have low bench numbers but it just keeps me motivated. Keep up the great work!

I just find it odd.
Meh- oh well.
What I find more annoying that getting asked the bench question is..."how much can you lift"
like- you want to know the one question that shows me you know literally nothing? that. That question.0 -
its your poorest"poverty" lift. My bench is a true poverty lift. Its improving but at a pace slow enough to drive me insane.0

After a summer of cutting cheese weight, I'm back down to my previous weight class. I lift at 57 but am sitting a bit under in this video; 55.6.
I'm in the mid of a peaking cycle for a mid mid November. This is 242.5 for 5x5. I can't remember which set this was.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJR62yGrIhM

Handling a slightly higher tonnage for bench over squat as I typically program a near same intensity but use a variant such as tempo squats to drive adaptation but with a lighter load to help with recovery. Thanks for support everyone, I truly appreciate it!5

So about two months ago, I decided to return to the skunkworks and retool the squat (again x4) for reasons I won’t go over again here. This time really commit to the low bar pattern and pick a method to do it. (Olympic style vs. Starting Strength method.)
I started with the bar and slowly added weight to build the back and develop cueing — just like a novice. Here is my first session below.https://youtu.be/w7SHQdB-r0o
Yesterday afternoon: 390/177 for a double with more in the tank. This the most weight squatted in over two months.
My squat still is not competition ready (knees not fully extended etc) nor am I near my old high bar 1RM, but this is progress I can finally be happy about.
Also another aspect of my squat I’m pleased about is depth — no longer as ATG and more just breaking parallel. Both reps pictured below.
Now onto fixing my deadlift.5 -

I missed placing at Raw Nationals by 2.5 kg :-( But I was very happy with all my lifts. I got meet PR's in squats and bench and got a PB in deadlifts and total. Here's my 231.5lb/105kg squat. This was an 11 lb. meet PR7 -
