Are there any protein bars that don't taste like a stick of chalk?

Cross-posted from another thread:Here's the best I've found so far (these are all as available in the UK):
PhD Pharma Whey HT+ ("delicious high-protein bar") - Chocolate/Peanut: 30g protein, 253kCal, just under 0.12g/kCal
PhD Pharma Whey HT+ ("delicious high-protein bar") - Double Chocolate: 30g protein, 248kCal, 0.12g/kCal
Taste is pretty good, texture is a bit gloopy, but overall happy with these.
Nutramino Protein Bar - Chocolate Brownie: 20g protein, 264kCal, just under 0.08g/KCal
Nutramino Protein Bar - Peanut & Caramel: 21g protein, 246kCal, 0.08g/kCal
Nowhere near as protein dense as the PharmaWhey ones, but these are delicious - I'd happily eat these as treats rather than protein supplements
Those Nutramino bars are quite hard to get hold of - last place I found them was http://hpnutrition.ie, and prior to that at https://postedprotein.co.uk/, but that are fabulous - I actually prefer them to most chocolate bars, they're that good.0 -
Finally tried the pure protein and agree they are good. Quest bars are good too. I also like the mission bars. Power bars aren't bad either.0

My son likes the Aldi's Fit & Active line of protein bars.0

I thought they were great too (used to get them online from Cardiff Sports Nutrition or at my old Nuffield gym) until I tried Grenade Carb Killas. I can't believe I'm the only one who's mentioned them so far. They will blow you AWAY.
Better than Quest, better than Nutramino Lean, better than Reflex R-bars, better than MyProtein My Bar Zero, bigger and better than PhD Diet Whey Bars. Yep, tried all of those too!
The Snickers and Mars are on my desk now, but I'm half way through a chicken salad at the mo, so I'll get to them a bit later this afternoon!0 -
Well THAT was disappointing!
Mars...
Negligible amount of caramel, nougat of that protein-y consistency that we're all trying to avoid, chocolate that tastes more American than British (i.e. NOT LIKE CHOCOLATE!).
So basically they've taken a lovely, delicious Mars bar and reduced it to a fairly bog standard protein bar. Better than some, but no better than a PhD Diet Whey bar, and worse than a Quest in my opinion.
Snickers...
Had about 4 peanuts on it, clearly visible through the wildly inferior chocolate-substitute that they've covered the thing in. Again, negligible caramel layer, and protein-y nougat. Fractionally better than the Mars (because: peanuts) but barely so. The Grenade Carb Killa Peanut Nutter is WAY better than this abomination in the name of Snickers, and has a ton less sugar to boot.
So team, save your money. They were £3 a go, bought singly, and entirely not worth it.
If you want to throw that sort of money at a protein bar, buy a Carb Killa. (No, I'm not sponsored!)
Get thee to http://www.grenade.com/ and sign up for the mailing list. They do a special of 2 boxes (24 bars) for £35 relatively regularly which makes them about half the price of anything you'll buy singly off the shelf. Or buy a couple to try from Holland & Barrett if you're in the UK.
Or if you live near one, go to Protein Haus and buy their carrot cake or "healthy cake". Or a coffee pump shake. All make me very happy indeed. (As does a little serving of squid from somewhere like Pho or Yo Sushi.)
But give the Mars and Snickers a miss. Really.1 -

Yikes! I'll be saving my money in this case! I was really really hoping on them as I can't stands the consistency of most protein bars and I really do like snickers0 -
Oh my, I am making lists of all the different bars you can get in the UK. I will be there 7 weeks so plenty of time to test a load of them.
@cs2thecox any chance of you getting hold of a bounty bar and testing it?
I was so disappointed with the chocolate being USA style rather than UK. I never acquired the taste for USA chocolate.
Cheers, h.0 -
I like the quest cookies and cream and vanilla almond flavors the best... These aren't the most popular, but I like them way better than the others. The cookie and almond bits seem to help with the texture.
But really? Like, actually delicious? Actually a healthy candy bar? No. Lies. All lies.
I do the quest bars as well. I actually like to heat them up in the microwave and then eat them. They tast like a treat!0 -
You should make your own! They can be soooo good! Here is an example

I made the carrot cake protein bar and it was amazing!0 -

Oh my goodness... those look amazing!
How long do the home made ones keep fresh (when stored properly)? And can you freeze them?0 -

I can try on Tuesday! (Off work moving house at the moment, national holiday on Monday, and the good shop is near the office...)
I know Protein Haus make their own Bounty-type bars though, so may not stock the "official" ones. I'll have a look.0 -

The apple pie one is pretty good too0 -
I love luna bars but they don't pack nearly as much protein as quest.0
-
Pure protein. Especially the peanut chocolate caramel. I consider it a treat it’s so good.2

Grenade Carb Killa Caramel Chaos is my new fav protein bar. Oh Yeah One Bar (Peanut butter) and Fitjoy Grandma's Lemon Square are also my favs. Cliff Bar is the worst bar I've ever tasted along with Quest0

Yep! Chocolate brownie and cookie dough.0 -
Quest cookie dough and Oreo flavors.
Not sure it’s high enough on protein, but NuGo is absolutely delicious0 -

Have you actually tried them?
WHAT
Where does one buy these?!

My three favorite:
Pottentia Peanut Butter Cacao Dark
Garden of Life Organic Peanut Butter Sport
Oh Yeah Almond, Fudge Brownie (when I have a sweet-tooth).0 -
I think the Quest Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough tastes like poison2

I like the Aldi Millville Peanut Butter Chocolate and Elevation chocolate chip (also from Aldi). The Pure bars are so thick and make me need a gallon of water. I don’t want to eat for like 15 hours! I guess that can be a plus.0
-
I go with Pure Protein.0

i agree i get these all the time and don't taste like chalk0 -
I love Oatmega protein bars. They only have 14 grams of protein, but they have tons of fiber and are very LOW sugar. Most protein bars either taste like crap, or might as well be candy bars. The Oatmega bars are really good. They taste good IMO, but are a little dry, but that's easily solved by eating them with a beverage - I love them with hot tea. But they are also good with plain old water.0

All the Quest bars I've tried taste like chemical funk and they are super, sickeningly sweet. No me gusta.3 -
Try going to blackberrybucket.com . There is a write-up on several different brands and their varieties, including reviews.0
-
Luna Bar tastes pretty good - especially the lemon one. No chalky taste0
-
I like the Premier Protein bars. Costco has a variety pack with Peanut Butter Crunch, Dark Chocolate Mint Crisp and Salted Caramel. I am not a big fan of the Caramel ones, but really like the Peanut Butter and Chocolate Mint. 30g protein each.0

I like them too and unfortunately we don't have the new flavours in Canada as of yet.
However I shared a Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough with a non protein bar eater cause she was really hungry and I felt guilty eating one without sharing... and she literally spat it out and pulled into a gas station for a chocolate bar!0
